Apologies for cross-posting: THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY OF JERUSALEM Department of Communication and Journalism Tenure-Track Research and Teaching Position The Noah Mozes Department of Communication and Journalism at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites outstanding candidates to apply for a tenure-track position starting Fall, 2011. Applicants should hold a Ph.D., or expect to be awarded a doctoral degree by September 2011. Post-doctoral experience is desirable. The successful applicant will join a dynamic research-oriented faculty offering innovative undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. We particularly encourage applicants with strong research records in the fields of journalism, new media, and film studies. The language of instruction is Hebrew, although English is acceptable for an initial period. 233 Million Chinese Use Mobile Phones To Access The Internet

I. Endeavors to Spur the Development and Application of the Internet [snip] The construction and improvement of the Internet infrastructure has beefed up the spread and application of the Internet. By the end of 2009 the number of Chinese netizens had reached 384 million, 618 times that of 1997 and an annual increase of 31.95 million users. In addition, the Internet had reached 28.9% of the total population, higher than the world average. At the same time, there were 3.23 million websites running in China, which was 2,152 times that of 1997. The number of IPv4 addresses approached 230 million, making China the second-largest owner in the world. Of all the netizens, 346 million used broadband and 233 million used mobile phones to access the Internet. They had moved on from dialing the access numbers to broadband and mobile phones. Sorry for cross-posting. *Third CopySouth Workshop* *International Conference on Copyright Issues* http://copysouth.org/portal/rio ● copysouth.rio2010(a)gmail.com The CopySouth Research Group (CSRG) invites you to attend and join in the debates at its three day international conference on copyright to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the end of June. It is an important moment to discuss these issues. Around the world, the antiquated assumptions of copyright law and ideology are again being questioned and new conflicts are breaking out. In Brazil, for example, more than 500 musicians, writers, academics and others signed an open letter in late May calling on their government to reform its copyright laws so that users can have more access to music and books. Meanwhile, the well-financed campaign against so-called copyright “piracy” has become even more vocal and threatens us all, except large corporations. Although three of the most important countries in the global South – China, India and Brazil – were not even invited to the talks, a new anti-piracy treaty called ACTA is about to be signed by rich nations in North America and Europe, as well as Japan and a few smaller countries. As we meet, a list of long-standing and complex questions is demanding new answers. Do most musicians benefit from the copyright system and the current way that the music industry is organised? How can we promote far more access to educational materials in the countries of South America, Africa and Asia than already exists? And, speaking of access and sharing, why do so many ideas and so many cultural products flow from the North to the South and so few flows the other way? Can we justify the current economic logic of the global copyright system? And what are viable alternatives to the current system? To address these questions and many more that you may want to raise, the CSRG has assembled a group of leading critical researchers, musicians and activists from around the world to come to Rio and to speak on seven panels. The speakers are from Brazil (7), Chile (1), Bolivia (1), Cuba (2), the United States (3), South Africa (2), Ghana (1), the Philippines (2), Switzerland (1), and the United Kingdom (2). We expect some strong opinions to be voiced and some good open debates to occur. So we extend an open invitation to all people interested in these issues, such as students, librarians, teachers, researchers, musicians and information activists, to attend. There will be simultaneous interpretation in Portuguese, Spanish and English. There you’ll see a simple interface ... that allows you to search across our database of almost 25 million chemical entities based on chemical name (systematic, trivial or trade, registry number etc) and retrieve a list of intrinsic properties, a list of predicted properties, a list of associated identifiers, with links to Wikipedia if available, and a Google based search for the chemical based, for now, on the associated InChIKey. "We almost have to be entertainers," a New Jersey social studies teacher tells FRONTLINE. "They consume so much media. We have to cut through that cloud of information around them, cut through that media, and capture their attention." In this hour report Dretzin also offers a corrective to widespread fears about online predators, finding strong evidence to question its prevalence. And she examines the dangerous new threat of "cyberbullying," which helped precipitate the suicide of a young boy in upstate New York. "You've got a generation faced with a society with fundamentally different properties, thanks to the Internet," says Danah Boyd, a fellow at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society. "It's a question of how we teach ourselves and our children to live in a society where these properties are fundamentally a way of life. This is public life today."
