Workshop Digitalization and Religious Contact

Dear Colleagues, Here a CFP for people (especially early career) working on religion and digital media. Hope it may be of interest to some. Are you doing research on digitalization and religious contact? Or do you have a general interest in learning more about methods and theories in media and religious studies to address the ethical and social consequences of digitalization? Then you might like to actively join the round table at our workshop and share information about your project. This is an opportunity for early career researchers to receive funding to come to Bochum (Germany) for a two-day workshop. The workshop “*Digitalization and Religious Contact*” ( http://bit.ly/DigitalizationWS*)* will take place on *14-15 November 2019* at Ruhr University, in Bochum. It will be organized by two research centers: the Center for Religious Studies (CERES), which is an interdisciplinary and international center studying the dynamics of religious change and religious encounters in Europe and Asia ( www.ceres.rub.de) and the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS), a research center where scholars can study the opportunities and challenges of the digital transformation (http://bit.ly/CAISEvent) During our workshop we want to address the following practical questions: How can scholars collect data about digital religion and analyze them? Which framework can better capture the role of the Internet in relation to religious contact? What kind of impact does digitalization have on religion, and how can it be analyzed? The workshop will include presentations from leading scholars in the field, including Mona Abdel-Fadil (University of Oslo), Oren Golan (University of Haifa), Tim Hutchings (University of Nottingham), Mehmet Karacuka (Ege University), Stephen Philaja (Newman University), Susanne Stadlbauer (University of Colorado), Johanna Sumiala (University of Helsinki). The second day will host the round table that will bring together senior researchers and early career scholars. We are willing to have early career scholars (including PhD students) who are interested in taking part in the round table. We have an interesting two year post doc opportunity open. The position is working at Stockholm University as part of the "Securing things: Human Centred Internet of Things Security" VR funded research project. The project’s goal is to develop the cultural, political and empirical understandings that will be needed to regulate, manage, and design for secure technology. The focus for this position is on conducting ethnographic research on those who hack computers, and in particular, embedded systems. We are looking for an experienced ethnographer, who might not necessary have particular technical skills, but who has experience investigating and understanding technical communities. The goal of this research will be to inform the design of computer security, in collaboration with our project partners at RISE. Sweden is one of the best places in the world to do a postdoc - an open, friendly, environment, with a good salary and conditions. Our research group currently has eight researchers working on a range of topics across the computing & social sciences. We publish at a high level with a supportive international environment. All the best. ***** *Organizers* Sahana Udupa (LMU Munich) Elisabetta Costa (University of Groningen) Philipp Budka (University of Vienna)* * *Date & Venue* 11 October 2019 Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) Munich, Germany *Abstract* By building on the Media Anthropology Network panel at the EASA 2018 conference in Stockholm and the follow-up e-seminar from 16 Oct. - 9 Nov. 2018 (http://www.media-anthropology.net/index.php/e-seminars) this workshop critically explores “the digital turn” in the anthropological study of media, and aims to push further ethnographic knowledge into the role that digital media technologies play in people's everyday life and broader sociopolitical transformations. In so doing, this workshop contributes to the reassessment of media anthropology in digital times, and raises critical questions on how digital media have posed new epistemological challenges, inspired methodological innovations, and offered opportunities for political activism for media anthropologists. A key question that drives this discussion is whether the digital turn has reconfigured the classic distinction between “home” and “field” through temporally intensified “horizontal” networks on a global scale. Have these connections – culturally translated across different societies – collapsed the distinction between “home” and “field”? As users and researchers of digital media, how do we rework anthropology’s classic conundrum of home-field, distance-nearness and us-other in radically progressive ways? What does the “digital turn” entail in terms of how we engage research participants, and how do we use these new pathways to critique the multidirectional “colonial matrix of power” (Mignalo & Walsh, 2007) that is riding on the very infrastructure of contemporary digital media? We invite scholars to engage with these questions through various topic fields they are researching, and consider this reflexive move as an important step towards challenging “the global fact” of racial, gender, ethnic and religion-based exclusions. We also invite scholars to bring cases of innovative use of digital research to overcome prevailing hierarchies in anthropological knowledge production – between researchers and research participants, as well as within the academic community. Drawing from their own research, and from their engagement with relevant literatures, workshop participants will ask the following questions: What is the present state of anthropological study on digital media technologies and their impact on culture and society? What are the main questions in need of urgent research (especially in connection to decolonizing media/digital anthropology, gender, visuality, extreme movements and speech)? How have digital technologies transformed (media) anthropology and how does the future look for media anthropologists? What is the role of digital technology in transforming knowledge production and dissemination in media anthropology? How can anthropologists contribute to the interdisciplinary effort of theorizing digital media practices and digital technologies? Who will be the main beneficiaries of this research, both in academia and beyond? We invite ethnographic and/or theoretical papers that focus on the above questions. Research position in Cyprus on social aspects of algorithms

Dear Colleagues, [Apologies for cross-postings] The Open University of Cyprus accepts positions for the fulfillment of one (1) Research Associate position with full-time employment over two years, in the context of the H2020 project “CyCAT: Cyprus Center for Algorithmic Transparency.” The project is funded by the program H2020 – Widespread – Twinning. The project aims at developing interventions that support the needs of users, raising their awareness of algorithmic biases (i.e., social biases that are observed in algorithmic systems and tools used regularly by the public for information access, such as search engines and social media platforms). The interventions to be developed include both digital tools and educational materials for digital literacy, with an emphasis on those that shall support the specific needs of Cypriot educators, information specialists and the public more generally. CyCAT researchers based at OUC collaborate closely with our advanced partners, located at leading universities across Europe and Israel ((University of Edinburgh, University of Trento, University of Sheffield, and University of Haifa).
