Hi Nicola, Seems like some good programs have already been provided but to answer your other questions: 1) Is [it] possible to collect tweets in bulk related to specific key words or hashtags? Absolutely. 2) Is there a specific programme that can assist me with this? Some great resources mentioned, thank you, all! Dr. Greenhalgh’s and Dr. Hamilton’s methods seem perfect. If you do not find an option that works for you, email me and I can walk you through Twarc which is listed on the blog post Dr. Shulman sent. It’s as “simple” as typing sentences and pressing return, but it does use the terminal which is a little program-y. It also requires a Mac (or Linux). 3) Is this permissible with Twitter's Ts & Cs? Yes! Collection of bulk tweets for as long as you want using any of the Twitter API’s available are permitted. The area which does have rules is the sharing of tweets post collection. You can share all of the full tweets with collaborators (including members of your lab). When sharing them with others, although you can share the all of the tweets, you can't share each tweet in its entirety. That is, you could share a file with all of the tweets you collected but only contains the tweet id, date, screen name and text fields. 4) Keyhole - has anybody used this before? I have not but if you have the funding for a paid service, then go with that. There are days I yearn to have something do the heavy lifting myself.

Sharing here just in case it applies to any member of the listserv: Title of Study: Social Media: An Analysis of Syllabuses Description: The purpose of this syllabus analysis is to explore and describe the structure of courses on “social media as a collaborative learning tool” within instructional design (educational technology, instructional technology, or learning design) programs. The analysis of this structure provides information about the core curriculum taught to graduate students in these courses. This syllabus analysis also serves to extract and recognize the tasks and learning opportunities, used in these courses, in a more systematic and direct manner. Overall, this research serves to understand how learning with social media is seen through syllabuses in instructional design graduate programs. In order to conduct the syllabus analysis, I am inviting instructors who have taught (during the 2017–2018 academic year) or will be teaching (in the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year) courses related to “social media as a collaborative learning tool” in instructional design (educational technology, instructional technology, or learning design) graduate programs (master or doctoral) to consider sharing their syllabus with me. Deadline for paper submission is OCTOBER 1. Social media data collection

Dear all, I am a post-doc researcher based at the University of Plymouth. I am investigating the media framing of renewable energy and would like to capture the conversations occurring about this through social media, particularly Twitter. My previous experience with this has been limited to qualitative analysis via a manual retrieval of tweets via Twitter's advanced search (obviously small in number compared to large-scale mining) and coding this in NVivo. I have heard of many third-party sites that previously collected tweets in bulk via Twitter's API, (I think!) (for example Twapperkeeper and I have previously used the free element of Topsy) but many of these seem to no longer be in existence which has led me to query whether this is compliant with Twitter's user policies. I know there have been many conversations around this before but can anybody clarify whether it is possible to collect Tweets in bulk related to specific key words or hashtags? And if so, is there a specific programme that can assist me with this? For example, can I set something up to capture the tweets occurring using specific key words/hashtags over a few months? And is this permissible with Twitter's Ts & Cs? I am currently exploring the possibility of using Keyhole - has anybody used this before? I know there have been numerous similar enquiries so please forgive me for asking again. I do not know very much about computer programming and have never used R or Python so I would appreciate if somebody can explain this to me without too much technical terminology if possible!
