Streamlining AoIR lists?
by Gillian Bolsover 17 Sep '18

17 Sep '18

Hi all, I'm wondering whether others would support separated AoIR lists for (1) job adverts, (2) calls for submissions (papers, conferences, special issues etc.) and (3) all other business. Much of what goes out on this list is job adverts, which was great when I was on the job market, but personally, given how active this list is, I'd love to be able to opt in or out of these categories of materials more selectively. I'd be interested to hear how much support there was from other members for this idea. -- Gillian Bolsover Lecturer in Politics and Media School of Politics and International Studies University of Leeds Support the technologies of the future you want; end-to-end encrypt your emails. by Yao, Mike 17 Sep '18

17 Sep '18

Apologies for cross-posting The Charles H. Sandage Department of Advertising at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in advertising and technology to further strengthen our scholarship in digital media and help shape our newly launched computer science + advertising major. The position is expected to begin in August 2019. We are conducting a broad search for scholars whose research lies at the intersection of computing and advertising. Areas of interest, include: * digital advertising, digital public relations, online branding, or digital communication * programmatic advertising and behavioral targeting * Internet of Things (IoT), mobile and location-based advertising * online consumer and audience behavior * privacy and ethics * User experience (UX), Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and advertising * innovative research methods and measurement tools * Artificial Intelligence and advertising We encourage applicants whose research lies within our broad search area ("intersection of computing and advertising") to apply, even if their specific research question may be absent from this list. Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D. (or ABD status) in a relevant field (advertising, communication, marketing, psychology, and information or computer sciences, etc.). We expect successful candidates to be fluent in interdisciplinary discourse and methods relevant to the intersection of technology and advertising. We expect successful candidates to shape the dialogue around technology and advertising with their scholarship. The Charles H. Sandage Department of Advertising is housed under the College of Media at the University of Illinois. Named after the "Father of Advertising Education", it is the earliest university department focusing on advertising education in the country and a global leader in advertising research. Consistent with Sandage's vision of advertising being a "fundamental economic and social institution," the Department strives to shape the future of advertising by placing more emphasis on the "why" than on the "how" of advertising activities in broader social contexts. The faculty members in the Charles H. Sandage Department of Advertising are highly interdisciplinary. They conduct theory-driven research not only on advertising but also on its social and behavioral impacts and publish in flagship journals in a variety of fields such as advertising, public relations, communication, psychology, marketing, and information and computer sciences. Candidates should create a candidate profile at http://jobs.illinois.edu and upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement (2 pg. max), research statement (3 pg. max), and three letters of reference. All requested information must be submitted for an application to be considered complete. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The University of Illinois conducts criminal background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer. Full consideration will be given to applications received by October 15th, 2018. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The review will continue until the positions have been filled. Deadline Extended! CFP Global Media and China_Special Issue: Data on demand: Ranking the nation, predicting the future
by Xiao Han 17 Sep '18

17 Sep '18

Dear Colleagues: Call for Papers for a Special Issue of Global Media and China (A Sage journal) - Deadline Extended to 15th October 2018 Theme: “Data on demand: Ranking the nation, predicting the future” Guest Editors: Michael Keane (Curtin University, Australia) Gary Rawnsley (soon to return to University of Nottingham Ningbo China ) Target issue: June Issue, 2019 Deadlines: Submission of Extended Abstracts: 15 October, 2018 (500 words) Notification of Abstracts Acceptance: 20 November, 2018 Submission of Full Papers: February 28 2019 OVERVIEW Many organisations, including governments, are now investing considerable resources into trying to measure both quantitatively and qualitatively the success and impact of their activities. This has given rise to a whole new industry that conducts longitudinal studies and feeds a new interest in global rankings. Governments are using their country’s position in these rankings as an indication of attraction, and a rise in global rankings is good news unless this represents a negative indicator, such as pollution or press freedom. Today one of the most pervasive indicators of national reputation is soft power, with organisations such as Portland developing rankings for institutions such as the Annenberg School of Communication, the British Council and the government of Wales; while Monocle magazine publishes its own soft power rankings at the end of each year. Other rankings measure a range of issues, including social progress, innovation, happiness, food security, Internet access and connection speeds, and pop culture exports. In addition, regions and cities are also analysed in an effort to understand the growing influence of sub-national actors. Rankings compare cities according to their liveability, global connectivity, friendliness, cultural diversity and creativity. A further development is the use of metrics to rank people within prescribed social demographics. The methodology behind such metrics has attracted less attention than the rankings themselves, though understanding this is crucial for our interpretation of the data. For instance some have argued that China’s soft power and social progress rankings would be far higher if they were measured according to values endorsed by the Chinese government rather than by the more liberal norms of OECD institutions. Moreover, measurement itself reveals little about the emotional response of audiences to cultural products or their engagement with political institutions. Clearly, we need to pay more attention to qualitative rather than quantitative research if we wish to know how and why audiences engage with a particular country or government. This special issue examines critically the current fascination with indexing, mapping, ranking and metrics as they apply to nations, regions, municipalities, publications and even citizens. Papers might address the topic of indexing from a range of disciplinary perspectives including media industry metrics, cultural policy studies, soft power and public/cultural diplomacy, international communications, and audience research. The editors are interested in scholarly papers that address any of the following topics: The value of surveys and rankings in international relations and communications The global business of producing comparative metrics Use of such metrics in international and national media reports Use of such metrics in evaluating academic reputations and institutions Policy implications of metric driven comparisons The methodology and management of indexing, mapping and ranking The use and abuse of big data, and the transparency of data Cultural trade data collections and cultural statistics The reliability and functionality of user recommendation sites and search engine rankings The use of algorithms and social credit scores to manage individuals within populations SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND REVIEW PROCESS: The deadline for submitting abstracts is September 30, 2018. Abstracts should be 500 words in length, detailing the purpose, methods, and main points of research. The abstracts should be submitted to Professor Michael Keane by email at m.keane(a)curtin.edu.au <mailto:m.keane@curtin.edu.au>. Following peer-review, a selection of authors will be invited to submit a full paper in accordance with the journal’s ‘Instructions for authors.’ Please note acceptance of the abstract does not guarantee publication, given that all papers will be put through the journal’s peer review process. Professionalization Website
by Jonathan Sterne, Dr. 14 Sep '18

14 Sep '18

Dear Colleagues, (I just got a note that this was rejected from the listserv—apologies if it wasn’t and you’re seeing it again). Apologies for crossposting. Since 1999, I have maintained a collection of web pages that provides links to useful resources for people on the academic job market in communication studies, though others in critical humanities fields and interpretive social sciences may find the materials useful as well. Over the year years, I have added material on other aspects of professional life and will continue to do so. You can find it at: http://sterneworks.org/Academe New for 2018: cybersecurity for academics, writing groups for tenured profs (ok, it’s for summer but it could work for fall, too), and more. I am always looking for good suggestions for material to add to the site, and as you'll see, I have used it to archive some material that has been circulated in other fora. If you have a suggestion for a link or a document worth archiving, or a correction to a typo or missing or expired link, please email me at jonathan.sterne(a)mcgill.ca<mailto:jonathan.sterne@mcgill.ca>. Please note that I do not post or keep track of job ads, nor am I interested in promoting commercial services or people's professional websites. This is purely for material that’s free and that I judge to be truly helpful for my intended audience. I intend to continue building the site, so suggestions for other areas to cover would be appreciated. Thanks for reading and feel free to share the link. Dear all, I am doing a literature review on the effects of dehoaxing /debunking misinformation online. I am aware of a few meta-analyses on this topic, but the studies included are not terribly recent. Any pointers to fresh studies, or the researchers who specialize, on the effects of debunking online misinformation is highly appreciated, especially on misinformation in multimedia format (images and videos in addition to text).
