CfP: DATA, SECURITY, VALUES: VOCATIONS AND VISIONS OF DATA ANALYSIS - Deadline 21. September - 1 hotel night will be funded
by Mareile Kaufmann 12 Sep '18

12 Sep '18

DATA, SECURITY, VALUES: VOCATIONS AND VISIONS OF DATA ANALYSIS 10.-11. December 2018 Peace Research Institute Oslo Call for Papers Data analysis can have many vocations and visions. Coding, programming and algorithmically interpreting data is informed by the concepts, ideas, values and affordances of the technologies and people that engage with data. Even if the word data means "given", information becomes socially and politically imbued as soon as it is selected and categorized to make it available for analysis. Such insights are no longer only subject of academic critique, but the normativity of data analysis has by now become integrated into public discourses. In fact, the value of data has created a new market for moral entrepreneurs, who re-frame data analysis as a tool for moral engineering and security politics. At this conference we explore how values, ideas and concepts are not only necessarily embedded in data analysis, but also in what way they are productive and co-create society. Please join our discussion on the many vocations and visions of data analysis in the security domain: These can include overt media manipulation and disinformation, the active sensoring or removal of online contents, the workings of editing algorithms or retweet-robots, the promotion of state-sponsored narratives online, but also the normativity of approaches that seek to "uncover fake news", "fight attacks on the freedom of speech online" or "make the world a more secure place with online data". Together, we discuss the relationship between data analysis, ideas and values by looking at the workings of digital security technologies, data security policies or the security politics of data. The three confirmed keynote speakers are: Miguel Sicart, Associate Professor at the Center for Computer Game Research at IT University Copenhagen, "Playing Data: Understanding the Ludic in the Information Age" Katja de Vries, postdoctoral researcher in Law Science Technology & Society at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, "The coexistence of humans and algorithmic profiling machines" Susanne Krasmann, Professor at the Faculty of Economy and Social Sciences, (Criminology) Hamburg University, "The desire for truth - and the secret of algorithms" The conference will further include a roundtable discussion with representatives from relevant Norwegian Authorities on "Data & the everyday of security authorities" The conference is organized by Mareile Kaufmann (PRIO) and Kristoffer Lidén (PRIO). Please send your abstracts of 250w. until the 21st of September to Mareile Kaufmann: markau(a)prio.no All paper presenters will get 1 hotel night covered. Other travel costs need to be self-funded. The theme is interpreted widely and can also include methodological papers.

Book Announcement: The Qualified Self (MIT Press, 2018)
by Lee H. Humphreys 11 Sep '18

11 Sep '18

Hi all, Forgive the cross-postings, but I just wanted to announce the publication of my book, The Qualified Self. It’s actually been out a couple of months now, but MIT Press just made the introduction chapter publicly available (https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/qualified-self) I also put together some teaching materials (e.g. slides and discussion prompts) to accompany the book. Here’s a link: http://blogs.cornell.edu/humphreys/the-qualified-self/ The back cover summary: "Social critiques argue that social media have made us narcissistic, that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube are all vehicles for me-promotion. In The Qualified Self, Lee Humphreys offers a different view. She shows that sharing the mundane details of our lives—what we ate for lunch, where we went on vacation, who dropped in for a visit—didn’t begin with mobile devices and social media. People have used media to catalog and share their lives for several centuries. Pocket diaries, photo albums, and baby books are the predigital precursors of today’s digital and mobile platforms for posting text and images. The ability to take selfies has not turned us into needy narcissists; it’s part of a longer story about how people account for everyday life. Humphreys refers to diaries in which eighteenth-century daily life is documented with the brevity and precision of a tweet, and cites a nineteenth-century travel diary in which a young woman complains that her breakfast didn’t agree with her. Diaries, Humphreys explains, were often written to be shared with family and friends. Pocket diaries were as mobile as smartphones, allowing the diarist to record life in real time. Humphreys calls this chronicling, in both digital and nondigital forms, media accounting. The sense of self that emerges from media accounting is not the purely statistics-driven “quantified self,” but the more well-rounded qualified self. We come to understand ourselves in a new way through the representations of ourselves that we create to be consumed.” All the best, Lee *************************** Lee Humphreys, PhD Associate Professor Director of Undergraduate Studies Dept of Communication Cornell University lmh13(a)cornell.edu<mailto:lmh13@cornell.edu> Author: The Qualified Self: Social Media & the Accounting of Everyday Life ((MIT Press<https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/qualified-self> Amazon<https://www.amazon.com/Qualified-Self-Social-Accounting-Everyday/dp/0262037…>)

tenure track associate professorship (W2) in Digital Geography; University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany)
by Glasze, Georg 11 Sep '18

11 Sep '18

Dear all, we are currently advertising a tenure track associate professorship (W2) in Digital Geography within an interdisciplinary cluster on digital transformation (see official website of the university: https://www.fau.eu/university/careers-at-fau/professorships/#collapse_1 ; closing date: 22nd of October!). The Institute of Geography in Erlangen is one of the biggest Institutes of Geography in the German speaking academia. In rankings of research and teaching performances the Institute frequently reaches top positions (see: https://www.geography.nat.fau.eu/research/) Our main research areas in cultural/human geography are embedded in a conceptual framework, which is captioned by "Contested Geographies". From this perspective, "we conceive and analyse geographies as 'cultural', that is to say as socially constituted, negotiated and thus often controversial". The Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of the leading research universities in Germany and the second largest full-university in Bavaria with an extraordinary broad range of disciplines (see: https://www.fau.eu/) Digital Transformation has been defined as one of the "key research areas" of the FAU bringing together researchers from the social sciences, law, economy, ethics, computer sciences, digital humanities, engineering etc. Our location in Erlangen is an attractive, quite international, lively and bike-oriented southern German university town with a little more than 100,000 inhabitants and roughly 30.000 students. A short 20-min rail- or bus-trip away, Nürnberg (or "Nuremberg") with more than half a million inhabitants is the centre of one of the largest metropolitan areas in southern Germany and offers diverse cultural activities. At Erlangen's and Nürnberg's doorsteps, the Franconian Switzerland as well as the Franconian lakes provide for many leisure opportunities of mid-range mountains (climbing, walking, biking/mountain biking, canoeing, cross country skiing etc.). Erlangen and Nürnberg are very well connected with Intercity Express trains to Munich (approx. 1,5 h to the south) and Berlin (approx. 3h to the north). Nürnberg has an international airport with connections to many major European cities. We seek to appoint an expert who will develop an internationally visible research and teaching profile in cultural/human geography. Applications are welcome from qualified scientists researching the role of digital data in processes of socio-spatial transformation and investigating the causes and effects of advanced datafication. The professor is expected to focus on and expand methods of gathering, processing and analysing geodata. In addition to strengthening research into digitalisation in the field of cultural/human geography, it is desirable that the professor can create connections towards other major research focus areas in cultural/human geography at FAU, in particular urban studies. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. Also, please feel encouraged to distribute widely! Best wishes, Georg Prof. Dr. Georg Glasze Lehrstuhl für Kulturgeographie Institut für Geographie FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg Wetterkreuz 15 D-91058 Erlangen-Tennenlohe Germany Tel.
