The seminar seeks to make an intervention in the field of media and migration studies.
The bi-literal seminar seeks to move beyond the Euro-American focus in the study of media and migration studies.
The predominant scholarly focus in studies on migration and nationalism focus on experiences and perspectives in the North- American and European Context. How can we re-conceptualize our understanding of the role of media in migration and nationalism drawing from situated contexts in Japan, and countries like China, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and the Philippines in the context of East and South-East Asia?
2). The seminar seeks to explore what the Netherlands and Europe can learn from the partly overlapping and partly diverging context of migration and the rise of nationalism in Japan and Asia, and vice versa. The focus is on the contradictory role technologies play in migration management, control, integration and community formation, transnational communication but also conflict and extremism. The seminar is highly interdisciplinary, invited speakers come from disciplines including media, communication, gender, migration, geography, sociology and anthropology. The organizers seek to disseminate findings by publishing an open access journal special issue, by offering policy recommendations as well as by distributing artistic impressions of main debates and findings.
3). The seminar is designed to exchange scholarship but a strong training component is central to our aims. For this purpose, one day of masterclasses is dedicated to training a selection of 6 talented students (MA/PhD level) from the Netherlands and Japan. Furthermore, alongside inviting a core group of established senior scholars, we are balancing the programme to ensure the participation of young emerging scholars. --

C. Edwin Baker Award - call for nominations
by Mirca Madianou 13 Sep '18

13 Sep '18

The Philosophy, Theory and Critique and Communication Law and Policy Divisions of the International Communication Association seek nominees for the annual C. Edwin Baker Award for the Advancement of Scholarship on Media, Markets and Democracy. The Baker Award recognizes work that has made significant contributions to the development, reach and influence of such scholarship. While the award committee favors research that consists of multiple projects and publications that have made a clear, coherent and sustained contribution to the advancement of such scholarship over time, single works and/or activities that have been highly influential in the field may also qualify someone for nomination. More specifically, nominees for this award will have accomplished one or more of the following: (1) opened up new theoretical and/or methodological territory in research on any aspect of the interrelations between media, markets and democracy; (2) made other important contributions to the advancement of scholarship on these inter-relations; (3) engaged in activism that advanced scholarship on these inter-relations. The award is open to ICA members and to anyone else whose research can be shown to have a connection with the work of the ICA and its various divisions. Members of the Award Committee may nominate, but no ICA member who makes a nomination or who is nominated for an award can serve on the committee judging the nomination. We encourage self-nominations, as well as the nomination of others. The award committee encourages nominations that reflect the diversity of media and communications scholarship in terms of gender, ethnicity, race and sexuality. We welcome nominations from any part of the world. All nominators must: (1) Submit letter(s) of nomination, not to exceed two pages each. These letter must: (a) specify the relevant body of work and/or other contributions made; (b) address the work’s and/or activity’s contributions to scholarship of media, markets and democracy (in the case of research, this will involve theoretical and methodological assessments of that work); and (c) make a case for its influence and impact on the advancement of such scholarship. (2) Submit representative examples of the work cited, along with a CV, to the chair of the awards committee. (3) Have all materials electronically submitted by September 30, 2018. The Baker Award was established in 2010 through an endowed fund created from the estate of Professor C Edwin Baker (1947-2009), who was the Nicholas F. Gallichio Professor of Law and Communication at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and is intended to honor the enormous contribution made by Professor Baker to communications scholarship. The Divisions gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Professor Baker’s sister Dr Nancy Baker. Nominations should be sent to: Mirca Madianou m.madianou(a)gold.ac.uk<mailto:m.madianou@gold.ac.uk> Please indicate clearly on the subject like BAKER AWARD. A sample 2018 digital campaign plan
by Colin Delany 12 Sep '18

12 Sep '18

Hey gang! I have more goodies this week: a sample 2018 digital campaign plan. It's written with political campaigns in mind, but many of the steps could apply to advocacy campaigns as well. http://www.epolitics.com/2018/09/12/a-sample-2018-digital-campaign-plan/ It's another excerpt from my latest digital strategy ebook, and if you missed the earlier Big Trends article (also from the book), here's the link: http://www.epolitics.com/2018/08/22/ten-big-trends-in-digital-politics-advo… Please let me know if you have suggestions for improvements, too -- this thing gets better every time b/c of lessons from the community. Also, the ebook is now being used in several university classes around the world, so take a look if you think it may be a good fit for your courses. I'm happy to send a review copy if that helps. --cpd "How to Use the Internet to Change the World and Win Elections: A Comprehensive Guide to Online Politics for Campaigns & Advocates" [Ebook] http://www.epolitics.com/winning Colin Delany Epolitics.com -- digital strategy for politics and advocacy http://www.epolitics.com 202-422-4682 cpd(a)epolitics.com @epolitics @dronewarjournal

Join us at CSCW in November!
by Casey Lynn Fiesler 12 Sep '18

12 Sep '18

Hello all! I'm sure that many of you may be familiar with CSCW, but if not, there is a wonderful amount of overlap with this community. This is also the first year where conference publications have moved to a journal model (Proceedings of the ACM) which we hope will help open up the community to other disciplines. The conference is coming up in November, and the early registration deadline is next Monday. There are also still opportunities to participate formally via workshops. More information below! Computer Supported Cooperative Work & Social Computing (CSCW) is the premiere venue for discussing how people, groups, and communities engage with new technology. This year, CSCW is happening on New York City’s Hudson River on November 5-7, which is why we are reaching out to you, fellow technologists, data scientists, user experience designers, and others similarly curious about the way computing affects our lives. We are excited to have CSCW back in the New York area, as the city is rapidly becoming a global center for tech innovation. To register for the conference, to find a workshop where you can submit to participate, or make travel arrangements, please see the following links: Register for CSCW: http://cscw.acm.org/2018/attend/registration.html Reserve a hotel room: http://cscw.acm.org/2018/attend/hotel.html Find workshops: http://cscw.acm.org/2018/program/workshops.html The early registration deadline has been extended to Monday, September 17! There will also be daycare options available at the conference, more information forthcoming. CSCW will be especially exciting this year! This will be the largest CSCW conference to date, with almost 300 papers from the two submission rounds, provocative panels<https://cscw.acm.org/2018/program/panels.html>, inspiring keynotes (to be announced) and other exciting sessions. You can find the tentative overview schedule for the conference on the website<https://cscw.acm.org/2018/>. The final presentation schedule will be posted soon, but authors (and others) can check out the preliminary session schedule<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lSI3Nb3XyWGGzscJlF_eBKVx7X-KgQA4dP6…> to better plan ahead. If you have questions, feel free to email me! You can also sign up for the mailing list on the website, to receive further information. See you on the Hudson. :) Casey Fiesler CSCW 2018 Communications Co-Chair --- Casey Fiesler Assistant Professor, Department of Information Science University of Colorado Boulder www.caseyfiesler.com<http://www.caseyfiesler.com> @cfiesler<http://www.twitter.com/cfiesler>
