CFP Deadline Extended - Global Media and China - Special Issue: Citizen Journalism in Asian Countries
by Xiao Han 04 Apr '18

04 Apr '18

Dear All, We pronounce that the abstract submission deadline has been extended to April 15 2018! Call for Papers for a Special Issue of Global Media and China (A Sage journal) Theme: “Citizen Journalism in Asian Countries” Guest Editors: Xin Zeng, Stuart Allan, Savyasaachi Jain and An Nguyen Target issue: Winter 2018 (December) Deadlines: Submission of Extended Abstracts: April 15, 2018 (500 words) EXTENDED! OVERVIEW In the aftermath of the South Asian tsunami of 26 December 2004, the term ‘citizen journalism’ quickly gained currency with news organisations finding themselves in the difficult position of being largely dependent on ‘amateur content’ to tell the story of what was transpiring on the ground in the most severely affected areas. Despite its ambiguities, the term was widely perceived to capture the countervailing ethos of the ordinary person’s capacity to contribute to professional news coverage, thereby providing commentators with a useful label to characterise an ostensibly new genre of reportage. Over the years since, it has become increasingly apparent that for varied reasons, priorities and motivations, so- called ‘accidental journalists’ – be they survivors, bystanders, first-responders, law enforcement, combatants, activists or the like – feel compelled to bear witness, often at considerable personal risk. The implications for news organisations have been profound. This special issue focuses on citizen journalism in Asian countries in order to identify and explore a range of important questions regarding its significance for the changing nature of journalism and society. Possible topics to be examined may include:  the perceived impact of citizen journalism on established Asian news organisations  how Asian journalists re-evaluate their professional identities, duties and ethics in response to citizen journalism  the role of citizen journalism in crisis situations  Asian values serving as facilitators or barriers (or both) to the emergence and development of citizen journalism  “fake news” masquerading as citizen journalism spreading through social media  Asian citizen journalists’ use of global online social networks – such as Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat – and the creation of sustainable alternatives (such as Weibo and WeChat in China)  citizen journalism as a form of empowerment, such as in the advancement of human rights  viewers, listeners or readers perceptions of citizen journalism in Asian countries  innovation and experimentation in citizen journalism Other topics are welcome, of course; the above list is suggestive of possibilities. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND REVIEW PROCESS: The deadline for submitting abstracts is March 30, 2018. Abstracts should be 500 words in length, detailing the purpose, methods, and main points of research. The abstracts should be submitted to Dr Xin Zeng by email at zxbarbara36(a)hotmail.com <mailto:zxbarbara36@hotmail.com>. Following peer-review, a selection of authors will be invited to submit a full paper in accordance with the journal’s ‘Instructions for authors.’ Please note acceptance of the abstract does not guarantee publication, given that all papers will be put through the journal’s peer review process. Please refer to the full submission guidelines available at: https://uk.sagepub.com/en- <https://uk.sagepub.com/en-> gb/asi/global-media-and-china/journal202494#submission-guidelines GUEST EDITORS Stuart Allan is Professor and Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC) at Cardiff University, UK. London based EVENT INVITATION: Multi-Sided Trust for Multi-Sided Platforms - on Thursday 12 April 2018
by Ansgar Koene 03 Apr '18

03 Apr '18

Dear all, the following may be of interest to those of you who are based within easy distance to London. Best wishes, Ansgar Next week we have an excellent event taking place in London, entitled "Multi-Sided Trust for Multi-Sided Platforms". This is a particularly hot topic at present. In recent weeks, we have seen data analytics and mining being denounced - with the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica now being touted by the Press as "the data scandal". Some are now calling for stronger regulation of what data mining a company can or cannot do. Prior to these latest news, DotEveryone published this report<http://attitudes.doteveryone.org.uk/> last month which called for the UK Government to establish an independent regulator that understands how the underlying systems behind technology work. The intent is for a body which can scrutinise business models, metrics and algorithms in real time, and which is independent from government (so that health, immigration and taxation data can be subjected to the same level of scrutiny). The UK Chapter of the Internet Society and the Horizon Digital Economy Research Program at Nottingham University have teamed up to organise an exclusive free event at the British Computer Society in London, that will bring panellists and participants to discuss the issue, starting with Catherine Miller - Director of Policy at DotEveryone, the organisation that has published the report. Other expert panellists are listed below and this exciting discussion will be moderated by Professor Ansgar Koene, Senior Research Fellow at Horizon Digital Economy Research, University of Nottingham. The discussion, likely to last approximately 90 minutes, will be followed by refreshments. Thursday 12 April 2018. Doors will open at 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start. Reserve your place now, as this event is likely to prove very popular! Last CFP: ACM RecSys'18: ACM Conference on Recommender Systems 2018
by Yong Zheng 03 Apr '18

03 Apr '18

*** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers: ACM RecSys 2018 to be held in Vancouver, Canada, 2nd-7th October 2018 https://recsys.acm.org/recsys18/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers: We are pleased to invite you to contribute to the Twelfth ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys 2018), the premier venue for research and applications of recommendation technologies. The upcoming RecSys conference will be held in Vancouver, Canada on October 3rd 2018. The conference will continue RecSys’ practice of connecting the research and practitioner communities to exchange ideas, frame problems, and share solutions. All accepted papers will be published by ACM. We construe recommender systems broadly, including applications ranging from e-commerce to social networking, and a wide variety of technologies ranging from collaborative filtering to knowledge-based reasoning or deep learning. We welcome new research on recommendation technologies coming from very diverse communities ranging from psychology to mathematics. In particular, we care as much about the underlying algorithms and systems as we care about the human and economic impact of these systems. Topics of interest for RecSys 2018 include (but are not limited to): - Conversational recommender systems - Novel machine learning approaches to recommendation algorithms - Evaluation metrics and studies - Explanations and evidence - Algorithm scalability, performance, and implementations - Innovative/New applications - Voice, VR, and other novel interaction paradigms - Case studies of real-world implementations - Preference elicitation - Privacy and Security - Economic models and consequences of recommender systems - Personalisation - Social recommenders - User modelling Authors will be asked to assign a selection of predefined custom tags to describe their paper in the submission system. Tags can be assigned to indicate algorithms, interfaces, automated or user-centric evaluations, for example. Reviewers will also report their expertise over these tags, and the information will be used in review assignments. PAPER SUBMISSION CATEGORIES LONG PAPERS should report on substantial contributions of lasting value. The maximum length is 8 pages (plus up to 1 page references). Each accepted long paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented in a plenary session as part of the main conference program. Each accepted long paper will also be allocated a presentation slot in a poster session to encourage discussion and follow up between authors and attendees. We expect the review process to be highly selective: the acceptance rates for full papers in the past three years was slightly over 20%. SHORT PAPERS typically discuss exciting new work that is not yet mature enough for a long paper. In particular, novel but significant proposals will be considered for acceptance to this category despite not having gone through sufficient experimental validation or lacking strong theoretical foundation. Applications of recommender systems to novel areas are especially welcome. The maximum length is 4 pages (plus up to 1 page references). Each accepted short paper will be included in the conference proceedings and presented in a poster session. The poster presentation may include a system demonstration. Selected short papers will be invited as oral presentations. Note that rejected long paper submissions will not be considered as short papers. SIGCHI SUBMITTER AGREEMENT RecSys 2018 is a SIGCHI conference and making a submission to a SIGCHI conference is a serious matter. Submissions require time and effort by SIGCHI volunteers to organise and manage the reviewing process, and, if the submission is accepted, the publication and presentation process. Thus, anyone who submits to RecSys 2018 implicitly confirms the following statements: 1. I confirm that this submission is the work of myself and my co-authors. 2. I confirm that I or my co-authors hold copyright to the content, and have obtained appropriate permissions for any portions of the content that are copyrighted by others. 3. I confirm that any research reported in this submission involving human subjects has gone through the appropriate approval process at my institution. 4. I confirm that if this paper is accepted, I or one of my co-authors will attend the conference. Papers that are not presented at the conference by an author may be removed from the proceedings at the discretion of the program chairs. PAPER FORMAT AND SUBMISSION All submissions and reviews will be handled electronically. RecSys 2018 submissions should be prepared according to the standard double-column ACM SIG proceedings format. Additional information about formatting and style files is available online <http://www.acm.org/publications/article-templates/proceedings-template.html>. Papers must be submitted to PCS2 by 23:59, AoE (Anywhere on Earth) on May 7th, 2018. There will be no extensions to the submission deadline. The peer review process is double-blind (i.e. anonymised). This means that all submissions must not include information identifying the authors or their organisation. Specifically, do not include the authors’ names and affiliations, anonymise citations to your previous work and avoid providing any other information that would allow to identify the authors, such as acknowledgments and funding. Please take note that the official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of the conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. IMPORTANT DATES - Abstract submission deadline: April 30th, 2018 - Paper submission deadline: May 7th, 2018 - Author notification: July 9th, 2018 - Camera-ready version deadline: August 6th, 2018 Deadlines refer to 23:59 (11:59pm) in the AoE (Anywhere on Earth) time zone. Dear colleagues, I’d like to point you to an upcoming conference in New York, held at Columbia University: Migration and Mobility in a Digital Age: Paradoxes of Connectivity and Belonging Conference Tuesday, April 10, 2018 - Wednesday, April 11, 2018 The Heyman Center, Second Floor Common Room For more information, see http://heymancenter.org/events/migration-in-a-digital-age-paradoxes-of-conn… The image of Syrian refugees with a smartphone shooting ‘selfies’ upon reaching dry land has captured the international imagination (Chouliaraki, 2017; Kunstman, 2017; Risam, forthcoming 2018). It suggests an image of the ‘connected migrant’ (Diminescu, 2008), which is shaped by a profound ambivalence: migrants are expected to be people fleeing from war, violence, and poverty; they are not expected to be ‘digital natives’, equipped with technologies to navigate their difficult journeys. While smartphones are accessible, affordable, and easy to use, in the realm of the public imaginary the image of the disenfranchised and disconnected migrant remains that of the ‘have nots’, and therefore subject to ‘high tech orientalism’ (Chun, 2006, p. 73). This posits the figuration of the migrant as outside the realm of development and modern forms of communication, disenfranchised and vulnerable in order to be worthy of international aid and pity (Boltanski, 20000; Ticktin, 2008). And yet smartphones are ubiquitous, and migrants have been early adopters and heavy users of technologies for the simple reason that these technologies are ingrained in their daily practices and everyday lives, which often involve perilous crossings but also the need to keep in touch with the home front and their diasporic communities. The promise of connectivity that is guaranteed even under duress becomes fraught with the profound disconnection brought about by the disciplining gaze of Western media and publics. It is, therefore, crucial to focus on the specific way in which digital technologies bridge or magnify the gap in migration between geographical distance and digital proximity. How are affect, intimacy, and belonging negotiated online in the face of forced migration and expulsions (Sassen, 2012) but also of circular migration, expatriation, and transnational movements? This conference aims to cover a broad range of conflict-related issues on migration in a digital age. Using the latest insights from a range of interdisciplinary fields, it will explore theories of displacement such as diaspora, cosmopolitanism, and nomadism, and the transformations brought about by the digital revolution, through the analysis of virtual communities, social media platforms, and digital activism. It will also focus on media production and the regulation of information on forced migrants in a ‘post-truth’ era: fake news; the humanitarianism-securitization nexus, migration management, social and political conflicts related to migrant and diaspora communities, radicalization and online counter-terrorism, hate speech and racism, but also solidarities, activism, and protest.
