Dear Colleagues, with this e-mail I am inviting you to submit abstracts for a panel proposal on scandal communication for the 2018 ECREA conference in Lugano. We are particularly looking for papers on scandal communication in the network society. Since the deadline is fast approaching (Friday!), please submit your 500 word abstract as soon as possible to me: andre.haller(a)uni-bamberg.de<mailto:andre.haller@uni-bamberg.de> -- Cultures of outrage: Scandal coverage across borders Scandal research is characterized by a variety of affected social fields (e.g. political, judicial or economic scandals) and is topic of different disciplines such as communication studies, political science or sociology. What they have in common is that scandal coverage occurs in every liberal-democratic system and fulfills important social functions like monitoring powerful actors, for example politicians or companies (Burkhardt, 2006). However, scandal reporting differs from country to country and is dependent on various aspects on the macro-, meso- and micro-level, for instance: The culture of a society (Hondrich, 2002), different journalistic cultures (World of Journalism Study, 2017), legal backgrounds or characteristics of the audience. This panel proposal aims at contributors who study scandal coverage in their country and to those who conduct comparative analysis of scandal cases in different national contexts. The main aim of the panel is to present recent studies on the cross-cultural aspect in mediated scandalization. The scope of contributions may range from… 1. papers addressing macro-level constraints in scandal coverage like political, legal, historic frameworks or particularities of the media system, 2. contributions focusing on effects of scandal coverage and reasons for scandal reception by the audience, 3. to works in which the style of media coverage on scandalous cases, particularly by online media, is analyzed. Since this list of possible research areas is open-ended, contributions from other areas of communication studies and other methodological standpoints of the field are welcome. Civic Tech "World Tour" - Want to host a stop?

Over the years, I've had the honor to speak across scores of universities about lessons and trends related to digital democracy and civic technology from a practitioner perspective. I joke that I share "what works" in practice and my academic friends then say, "Yes, but does it also work in theory?" Typically, I've been fiscally hosted by a government or some conference and I've asked if I could also have a free open to all side event at a local university. I value these exchanges tremendously. So here is my looooong shot request ... Based on my 7500+ member Civic Technology and Open Government Facebook Group I am applying for the Facebook Community Leadership Program. They will select five $1 million winners and 100 fellows who will receive $50K to boost their online communities. Panel proposal at ECREA2018 about social/digital media research ethics

Dear all, apologies for cross-posting. I'd like to submit to the ECREA 2018 conference a panel proposal about social media/digital media research ethics. Next October the ECREA 2018 conference will be held in Lugano (Switzerland) and theme of the conference will be "Centres and Peripheries: Communication, Research, Translation". Unfortunately the conference date will be near to the AoIR Conference in Montreal, so I don't know how many of you should be interested or able to come also at ECREA Conference. The deadline of the call for paper has been extended to March 2. Following the conference theme I think that the panel should develop the relationship between centres and peripheries about the ethics of social/digital media research, like new approaches to ethics, research about new topics where an ethical reflection is still developing (i.e. AI, Internet of Things, research involving children...) or confronting the approaches to research ethics in different Countries. The goal of the workshops is to provide additional venues for discussing novel ideas as well as recent results of research in progress. In 2018 our goal is to have a balanced workshop program which comprises workshop formats of different types and a combination of newly emerging, currently evolving, and historically understudied topics. Different full-day and half-day workshop formats are possible, forexample: ● Workshops with novel interactive workshop formats and a relatively small number of participants. Such workshop formats might for example target at the exploration of a certain topic during the workshop through a moderated discussion or breakout sessions, resulting in a draft paper or report to be completed and published after the workshop. Particular priority will be given to these formats which require the active involvement of the participants. ● Workshops with the traditional workshop format on specialized topics; such workshops typically have their own paper submission and review processes. Proposals for continuations of existing workshop series are welcome, however, please include a brief statement on the necessity for the new edition, including a description of the outcomes of previous years and the expected novelty of this edition. In both cases, a subset of workshop papers selected by workshop chairs will also be allocated a presentation slot in a poster session to encourage discussion and follow up between authors and attendees. We encourage you to contact us by email to workshops2018(a)recsys.acm.org in advance with workshop ideas; we will work with prospective workshop organizers to help them design successful proposals. In particular for workshop proposals with novel interactive formats we are happy to assist you in further developing and implementing your ideas. PROPOSAL FORMAT AND SUBMISSION The workshop proposal should be a PDF document no more than 4 pages long, submitted by e-mail to workshops2018(a)recsys.acm.org and organized as follows: ● Workshop title ● A short description of the workshop including the rationale for the workshop and how and why it fits the audience of RecSys. This description should include also the topic, format, and details about what type of submission is requested from prospective attendees. Please also add an explanation on how the workshop complements, rather than duplicates, the topics of the main conference. ● Name, email address, and affiliation for workshop organizer(s) and a brief description of their experience in organizing such events. ● Requested duration (half day or full day), and expected number of participants. ● Description of workshop activities. Outline how the workshop will be organized and how the time will be spent. In particular, please sketch how you will engage participants to foster more interactivity and engagement during the workshop. It is also a critical time to look to the future and to the technical, legal, ethical and organisational challenges that saving the web for citizens and for researchers continue to present. As established web archives mature and new initiatives emerge, web archive artefacts and data become more valuable for our understanding of societies, politics, cultures and economies in a world of increasingly contested narratives. In 2018 theInternational Internet Preservation Consortium <http://netpreserve.org>(IIPC) will celebrate 15 years as the premier international body fostering the development of web archiving tools, standards, practice and research. Dear all, I'd like to submit a panel proposal about how we can study local internet in terms of history of its development in different countries and cities. I suppose that it would be great to discuss it in comparative prospective and figure out what concepts can we use for it and how do we conduct this kind of studies.
