ISOC DC's collaboration with American University continues to excel. [image: livestream] <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/iotgov>Today, *Friday March 30 2018*, the* Internet Society Washington DC Chapter <https://isoc-dc.org/>* (ISOC DC) and the *Internet Governance Lab* <https://internetgovernancelab.org/> will host a mini-conference *Governing the Internet of Things <https://isoc-dc.org/governing-internet-things/>* at the American University in Washington DC. The Internet’s architecture and governance structures have been designed to enable innovation, global communication and the free flow of information, but the Internet of Things presents a new range of governance challenges. An Internet embedded in the material world creates new and increased concerns around privacy, security, and the possibility of physical harm to people and disruption of material infrastructure. To what extent do the Internet’s underlying architectural and governance principles need to evolve to address these risks? What is the outlook for security and privacy in the context of ubiquitous cyber-physical systems that range from cars to medical devices to home control systems? What forms of inequality and discrimination are emerging in this environment? This panel brings together stakeholders from industry, design communities, civil society and academia to address the transformation of Internet governance in the age of cyber-physical systems. Speakers: *Cory Doctorow*, Author; *Paul Ohm*, Professor Georgetown Law; *Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino*, Open Internet of Things Certification Mark; *Gilad Rosner*, Internet of Things Privacy Forum; *Tatevik Sargsyan*, Ranking Digital Rights Project, New America Foundation; *Adam Thierer*, George Mason University; *Derrick Cogburn*, American University; *Laura DeNardis*, American University; *Andrew Rens*, American University. *What: Governing the Internet of Things <https://isoc-dc.org/governing-internet-things/>* *Where: American University, Washington DC* *When: Friday March 30 2018 9:30am-3:00pm EDT | 13:30-19:00 UTC* *Program: https://isoc-dc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/IoTGovernance_program.pdf <https://isoc-dc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/IoTGovernance_program.pdf>* *Webcast: https://livestream.com/internetsociety/iotgov <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/iotgov> (no captions)* *Hashtag: #IoTgov twitter <https://twitter.com/hashtag/iotgov?f=tweets&vertical=default&src=hash> | facebook <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/iotgov>* Comment <http://isoc-ny.org/p2/10025#respond> See all comments <http://isoc-ny.org/p2/10025#comments> *Permalink* *http://isoc-ny.org/p2/10025 <http://isoc-ny.org/p2/10025>* -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Joly MacFie 218 565 9365 Skype:punkcast -------------------------------------------------------------- -

SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR ONLINE MATHEMATICS PROJECT
by kofi ware 29 Mar '18

29 Mar '18

Dear Colleagues, I respectfully write to ask colleague researchers in this platform to suggest potential sources of funding to implement my online mathematics project in Ghana. An overview of the project Statistics of results from the West African Examination Council (WAEC) continues to show an abysmal performance of students in mathematics right from the basic school level to the secondary school level. For example, results released by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) indicate that only 25.29% of candidates who took the May/June 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) obtained A1-C6 in mathematics while 29.75% had D7-E8 and 37.17% had F9. In 2016, only 77, 108 (32.83%) of students who sat for the WASSCE passed in core mathematics obtaining between A1-C6; 65, 007 (27.68%) obtained D7-E8 whilst 89,477 (38.10%) had F9. In 2017, statistics from WAEC indicated that 122,450 (42.73%) had A1-C6 while 106,024 (37%) had D7-E8 and a total of 58, 351 (20.27%) had F9. Even though there seems to have been a considerable improvement in 2017 as compared to the previous two years, the general trend and overall performance in mathematics paints a gloomy picture and therefore, calls for concerted efforts in overcoming this hurdle. This is necessitated by the fact that mathematics is often included among the core subjects and as such is a pre-requisite for admission from the basic level to the secondary school level and subsequently from secondary schools to tertiary institutions. In view of this, it is important for teachers to move away from the old teaching methodologies and to be innovative and adopt more pragmatic measures to help student pass mathematics. This involves implementing strategies that will complement the normal class room work and grant an opportunity for students who are slow learners to be able to catch up with their colleagues. I would be grateful to receive your feedback *Dr Stephen Bekoe* BA, Ghana MSc, Singapore PhD, England *Research Scientist* Geo-spatial and Information Science Division Institute for Scientific and Technological Information *Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Ghana*

quick YouTube algorithm question
by Sophie Helen Bishop 29 Mar '18

29 Mar '18

Hello AoIR, sorry this may be a bit of a banal question but any help would be appreciated. Does anyone know whether YouTube is algorithmically more likely to promote monetised videos? Common sense suggests that they want users to engage with ads while on the platform, so that would at least have some algorithmic weighting (probably small though). But also, I guess users are served ads other places in the interface so maybe they don't care that much? I guess there is no way of really knowing this unless YouTube have said, and even then, who knows. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts! Dear AIR community, Many thanks to your precious responses! It really helps. Will keep this in mind for future publication endeavors. I might get in touch with some of you personally should you be willing to co-author etc. Briefly about myself: originally from Kazakhstan, I am a continuing PhD candidate at LKY School of public policy, Singapore. Major theory areas: the agenda-setting stage of the policy process with the actor-centric approach; use of NVivo content analysis; use of Google search, Scopus, Lexis-nexis, government databases, think tank web-sites etc. for collecting data as measured by the number of mentions by a range of actors - media, the public, academia, think tanks, and government. Policy issues: corruption, economic diversification, violent crime. Countries of interest: former Soviet nations, Baltics, Canada, Australia, Southeast Asia. Looking forward to further cooperation. Digital public policy journals?
by Mergen 28 Mar '18

28 Mar '18

Dear AIR members, Greetings to all of you! It would be appreciated if someone could suggest any relevant journals focusing on Public Policy in the digital era. What we get mostly these days is a whole range of digital technology and media journals, while public policy seems a bit in the back yard. Thanks.
