Mediated Conversation: HICSS-52 CFP
by Yoram Kalman 22 Mar '18

22 Mar '18

Dear colleagues, Members of AoIR and of the Air-L listserv who research any aspect of online conversation are invited to submit papers to HICSS, the 52nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) that will take place in the island of Maui, Hawaii in January 2019. The Mediated Conversation minitrack focuses on research of conversations taking place on digital and social media. Conversations are at the core of human communication. Mediated conversations can use text, audio, images or video, or any combination thereof. The minitrack welcomes research on conversations that are interpersonal, as well as those that occur in organizational or mass communication, educational or political contexts, and in any other sphere of human activity. Some examples of highly cited papers that first appeared in this minitrack include: Beyond Microblogging: Conversation and Collaboration via Twitter, by Honey & Herring; Talk before You Type: Coordination in Wikipedia by Viégas, Wattenberg, Kriss and van Ham; You Are Who You Talk To: Detecting Roles in Usenet Newsgroups by Fisher, Smith and Welser; Tweet, Tweet, Retweet: Conversational Aspects of Retweeting on Twitter by boyd, Golder and Lotan; and, Learning Conversations in World of Warcraft by Nardi, Ly and Harris. This minitrack brings together researchers and innovators to explore mediated conversation and its implications; to raise new socio-technical, ethical, pedagogical, linguistic and social questions; and to suggest new methods, perspectives, and design approaches. The Mediated Conversation minitrack is the successor of the Persistent Conversation minitrack established by Tom Erickson and Susan Herring at HICSS in 1999, which was originally focused on the novelty of conversational persistence. With the prevalence of mediated conversation, we are called upon to consider a wider field of issues. Examples of appropriate topics include, but are not limited to: • Innovation in mediated conversational practice • The dynamics and analysis of large scale conversation systems (e.g., MOOCs and big data applications) • Methods for analyzing mediated conversation: qualitative, quantitative, data analytics • Mediated collaboration • The dark side of mediated conversation, e.g. loafing, bullying, and communication overload • Studies of virtual communities or other sites of mediated conversation • Ethics and mediated conversation: privacy, deception, freedom of speech, security and information warfare • The role of mediated conversation in knowledge management • The role of mediated conversation in organizations • Domain specific applications, opportunities and challenges of mediated conversations and conversational exchanges (e.g., in education, healthcare, social movements, government, citizen participation) • Conversation visualization • The role of listeners, lurkers, and silent interactions • Novel properties of mediated conversation • The platform’s role in mediating the conversation Fast track journal opportunity: Authors of papers accepted for presentation in the minitrack will be offered the opportunity to submit an extended version of their papers for consideration for fast-track publication in the ACM journal ACM Transaction on Social Computing ([1]https://tsc.acm.org/) Important Dates for Paper Submission April 15, 2018: Paper Submission System Launched June 15, 2018 | 11:59 pm HST: Paper Submission Deadline August 17, 2018: Notification of Acceptance/Rejection September 22, 2018: Deadline for Authors to Submit Final Manuscript for Publication October 1, 2018: Deadline for at least one author of each paper to register for HICSS-52 For details see [2]http://hicss.hawaii.edu/tracks-and-minitracks/authors/ If you have any questions, please contact the minitrack Co-Chairs: Sheizaf Rafaeli (Primary Contact) University of Haifa [3]sheizaf(a)rafaeli.net Yoram M Kalman The Open University of Israel [4]yoramka(a)openu.ac.il Carmel Kent Arden University, UK [5]kent.carmel(a)gmail.com -- Yoram Kalman, PhD [6]www.kalmans.com Cell: +1 737 781 4770 References 1. https://tsc.acm.org/ 2. http://hicss.hawaii.edu/tracks-and-minitracks/authors/ 3. mailto:sheizaf@rafaeli.net 4. mailto:yoramka@openu.ac.il 5. mailto:kent.carmel@gmail.com 6. http://www.kalmans.com/

[via ISOC] ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Understanding the Research Needs of the Internet Freedom Community: A New Report This report <https://globalnetpolicy.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4e737cdd4472a960…>, based on a 2017 survey of 79 organizations engaged in digital rights advocacy from around the world, seeks to provide clarity on how the community understands and utilizes research within current advocacy efforts and to identify the needs for future research and collaboration efforts. Through the survey, we asked organizations to consider their capacities for conducting research and using it within their campaigns, perceptions of current research being produced on internet policy issues, and thoughts on barriers to and opportunities for collaboration between research and advocacy organizations. The study seeks to address the following key questions: - Which research methods do organizations use the most in internal research? What capacities for research exist within organizations and via existing collaborations with research institutions? - What issue areas are perceived as the most researched and the least researched? - What kinds of aggregated datasets would be most useful for organizations’ advocacy? - Who are the perceived audiences for digital rights organizations’ research and advocacy? - What are current barriers to collaboration between research and advocacy organizations? - How can funding be directed to improve collaborations, increase research capacity, and produce research needed by and representative of the community? <https://globalnetpolicy.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4e737cdd4472a960…> Click here to read the full report! <https://globalnetpolicy.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4e737cdd4472a960…> For more information or feedback, please email lsh(a)asc.upenn.edu. Estimating adsense revenue?
by Daniel Carter 20 Mar '18

20 Mar '18

Hi, Does anyone have experience estimating adsense (or other online advertising) revenue? Or know of a paper that does similar? I'm working on a project that centers on a specific blog, and I've built a good estimate of site traffic. I'm hoping to come up with an estimate of the advertising income from that traffic. Even a very, very rough estimate would be useful to me. Alternately, if anyone has contacts in online advertising that might be willing to weigh in briefly, that would be helpful as well. Thanks, Daniel Carter Assistant Professor of Digital Media School of Journalism and Mass Communication Texas State University

Challenges of Social Media Data for Bibliometrics. Special Track at STI Conference 2018. Deadline April 1.
by Weller, Katrin 20 Mar '18

20 Mar '18

Dear colleagues, as part of the STI Conference 2018 (http://sti2018.cwts.nl) we will be organizing a special track on the "Challenges of Social Media Data for Bibliometrics" (#sti18challenge). This specialized track focuses on the ongoing challenges for using data from social media platforms and from third party aggregators as sources for research metrics and scientometric indicators. These challenges include but are not limited to: --> platform-based restrictions in accessing social media data and potential biases resulting from limited access (also: biases introduced by data aggregators) --> black boxes, hidden algorithms, and lack of information about collection processes and context affecting the use of social media data and data aggregators -->lack of understanding of user activities (e.g. motivations to retweet, like, share) and user groups in academic contexts -->incomplete data (e.g. due to missing DOIs or identifiers not tracked by aggregators) and noise (e.g.due to bot-activity) We invite the following types of submissions: a) original research studying the quality of social media data and data aggregators for measuring scholarly communication b) short (hands-on) introductions and best practices for using data from one or more specific social media platforms or aggregators. Please submit your work as short papers (max 3,000 words) until April 1, 2018. See http://sti2018.cwts.nl/submissions for templates, EasyChair access and additional submission information.
