This will be the first event in a series of provocations on how European citizens can retake control over the future of the internet. CfP Journal of Alternative and Community Media: "The “Other” Alternatives: Political Right-Wing Media On- and Offline"

Dear Colleagues, the Journal of Alternative and Community Media calls for proposals about right-wing media on the internet (and offline). Probably some of you are working on that topic at the moment – we would be very happy to receive papers from AoIR members and affiliated researchers. Here is the full CfP (Extended Deadline!): -- Journal of Alternative and Community Media The “Other” Alternatives: Political Right-Wing Media On- and Offline Research on alternative media is deeply rooted in media scepticism of the 1970s and is especially influenced by cultural studies. The main aim of alternative forms of journalism is to challenge mainstream media and its professional practices (Atton, 2010). Moreover, alternative media producers want to give voice to minorities (Bailey, Cammaert & Carpentier, 2008) and, particularly in left-wing journalism, to overcome cultural hegemony of political and economic elites fostered by established media (Schweiger, 2017). Consequently, studies on alternative media mainly focus on left-wing conceptions (Beywl & Brombach, 1983; Holtz-Bacha, 2015), on alternative media as oppositional instruments in authoritarian regimes (Schweiger, 2017) as well as on community media (Bailey et al., 2008; Harnischmacher, 2015). However, “little attention has been paid to right-wing media as alternative media” (Atton, 2006, 574). Actually, we see a vast spectrum of right-wing media such as Breitbart News Network, The Alex Jones Show and Infowars or the influential publicist Milo Yiannopoulos. Though many right-wing platforms have little impact, some prominent organisations have a high reach in terms of followers, “like” numbers or circulation rates. In addition to that, we witness that alternative right-wing media gain importance in daily politics. For instance, Breitbart News Network and the blog The Gateway Pundit entered the White House Press Corps after the election of Donald Trump. This special issue of the Journal of Alternative and Community Media focusses on Alternative Right-Wing Media which is published online as well as offline to close the research gap in the right-wing media spectrum. Possible papers could focus on questions such as: · How do right-wing media represent themselves? Do they emphasise their role as alternative media contrary to mainstream media? How is the relationship to other media? For example, are there opportune connections to established mainstream media, e.g. citations of or links to mainstream media articles? · Who are the recipients of alternative right-wing media? How do they think about political issues and about established media? Is there a connection between media scepticism (the “liar press” accusations in Germany and the “fake news” allegations in the US are still part of the public discussion) and the use of alternative media? · Who are the producers of alternative media in the right-wing sector? Do they have a professional background in journalism? Which political views do they have? · Do right-wing alternative media have elements of participating journalism or are they used to promote the political standpoints of the producers? · Is there a closed counter public sphere in the right-wing spectrum? Can we perceive effects of echo chambers or filter bubbles (Pariser, 2011)? Need A few others interested in running a pre conference workshop on web scarpping techniques

I know it is a bit late in the game but. I wonder if there are other more technical people like myself on here going to Montreal this year for the AoIR conference who could help me give a hands on workshop in web/social media scrapping. I am thinking of training a few folks to use R which is open source and free to use (www.r-project.org) I would prepare some R code for this and also show folks how to research other R code or web scrapping examples they would then have the know how to modify themselves. The idea would be that leaving this workshop any person could use R to web scrap what they want using http or API call methods. They would come away with a solid understanding of how data could pass over the Internet to research databases and how they would can fine tune the data filters choices etc.. The participants would exit of course with know how to learn more techniques and share their knowledge and run similar workshops. Of course some other team could run a workshop on the ethics of web scrapping too as there has been some debate of this recently here on the list. Preconference workshops: Workshops may be either half or full-day events that occur on the first day of the conference and focus on a particular topic. They may be a workshop of some kind (e.g., a publishing workshop), a methodological "bootcamp" (e.g., on ethnography or statistical analysis), an exploration of a theoretical tradition or topical area (e.g., symbolic interaction, political economy, or GIS) or anything else that may be of interest to conference delegates. Proposals for workshops should explain for a general scholarly audience the goals of the workshop, the way it will operate, and an indication of potential audience or attendees who may be interested in attending (such as "early career scholars" or "researchers using statistical analysis"). Proposals for workshops should be approximately 600-800 words in length (to be submitted as an "abstract" in the ConfTool Website: no separate document needs to be uploaded). They should name the facilitators and participants and are only single-blind peer-reviewed; the quality and expertise of the facilitators and other participants will be recognized in the assessment. The availability of individuals named as facilitators and panellists in workshop sessions must be confirmed by the time the proposal is submitted. Call for Papers: AMCIS 2018 Minitrack: Social Theory in Information Systems Research (STIR ’18) Track: Social Inclusion (SIGSI) 24th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), Aug. 16-18, 2018 New Orleans, LA, USA This minitrack solicits papers using social theory to critically examine ICTs and their roles in enabling and constraining social inclusion. What can be done to improve access to computing for underrepresented groups? In what ways do new technologies impact digital divides? What are the social, cultural, political, and economic implications of the Internet of things? These are examples of the kinds of questions we are interested in exploring in this minitrack. We are particularly interested in completed or emerging research using social theory to address the conference theme, Digital Disruption, critically examining the ways in which emerging technologies are changing the sociotechnical landscape in ways that narrow or widen the digital divide. This will be the 18th consecutive year for STIR, and we hope to continue a tradition of high quality papers, and thought-provoking and lively discussion for IS researchers using social theory in their work. In addition to research aligned with the conference theme we are also interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that uses social theory to investigate issues such as (but not limited to): • Improving access to computing for underrepresented minorities • Reengineering the pipeline in STEM education for greater inclusiveness and diversity • Critically assessing the ways in which ICTs and information systems can be used to privilege some and exclude others • Understanding the impacts of the Internet of Things on the digital divide • Assessing the unintended consequences of technology implementation and use in organizations and in social life • Reflection on the ways in which ICT assemblages support and challenge political, cultural, and economic hegemonies. CFP: Human Technology's themed issue on Aging and Technology A facet of all societies is that members are continually aging; moreover, that segment of society typically needs different approaches to living well than do younger members. In the past, special technologies have been devised to support these individuals. In contemporary society, however, many of the growing aging population are already technology users in daily life. As a result, new practical and social needs for technology use are emerging. Additionally, continual evolution and innovation in research and design approaches to technology utilization need to recognize and address the simultaneous decline in motivation and cognitive and motoric abilities brought on by aging bodies and minds. Human Technology, an interdisciplinary, open access scholarly journal, is preparing a themed issue to publish research that strengthens the knowledge base of aging and technology. The scope of the themed issue, in the spirit of Human Technology's goal of shedding an interdisciplinary light on important human-centered aspects of technology, would encompass multiple approaches toward and methods of investigating the human aspect of technology use (and nonuse) in later life. Such research can involve technologies ranging from ordinary ICTs and social media to assistive technology and robotic solutions. The emphasis, however, is explicitly on the human implications and outcomes of these technologies. This themed issue is being organized in conjunction with ongoing research through the University of Jyväskylä's Center of Excellence on Aging and Care (2018-2025) and will be published in November 2018. Interested authors should submit an abstract indicating the focus of the proposed submission to Human Technology no later than 1 March 2018. Full papers are to be submitted by the corresponding author via Human Technology's journal management system by 31 May 2018. The full schedule of dates and appropriate links are provided below. All submitted papers (minimum of 7,500 words) will be evaluated for originality of texts, suitability within the scope of the thematic issue, and readiness for peer review. Papers meeting the above criteria will be subjected to double-blind review by at least two experts in the topic area of the manuscript. Papers accepted for publication in Human Technology must follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). secure team collaboration software?

(At the risk of taxing the patience of the list ...) Dear AoIRists, While I've sent an inquiry along these lines to a few colleagues with superb expertise in these matters, I thought it might not hurt to also interrogate the wisdom and experience of this particular crowd. One of our thoughts / hopes for the ethics working group is to make use of something like a secure wiki or hypertext / collaborative environment. The idea is to have one or two introductory / summary / overview documents that can then link to modules - overview articles on more specific topics, resource lists, case studies, etc. In the first stage, this needs to be (relatively) secure ("secure" being relative these days) - i.e., with access for the Working Group members who are working on various components. At a second stage, however, the thought is to make it available to the AoIR research community for further refinement, contribution, etc. Ideally, finally, a relatively polished version would then be made available to more or less anyone "out there" looking for resources in internet research ethics. A first thought, of course, is a wiki or wikipedia-like service. But some of you may recall that a very nice wiki established by the earlier ethics working group was hacked and much good work was lost, most unfortunately. So we're looking for a working space at least comparatively less liable to such attacks. Many of us have tinkered with collaboration via Google docs, Slack, and others. But I also know of more than one university, at least in this part of the world, that is insisting on such collaborations taking place within university-based installations of Microsoft Teams, for example. More secure, yes - but not as hyper-texty as we would like, so far as I can tell - and not sure how it would work to invite others outside the university? I could easily be missing something, and if so, please don't hesitate to let me know. And/or: any further suggestions for a really secure collaborative environment, with rich hypermedia functionalities, and the flexibility to move through at least the first two stages of collaboration, i.e., within the Ethics Working Group and then the AoIR community at large?
