Call for Papers, Panelists, Participants: No longer restricted to specialized groups or applications, ‘high-tech’ is everywhere. For example, incorporating many of the components and capacities previously only built into special industrial equipment, law enforcement and military technology, many consumer-grade items, including home security systems, domestic appliances, even children’s toys, now come equipped with 4G connectivity, high resolution infrared/night vision, two-way communication, and audio-visual recording capability. Considering another set of examples, from those mundane ‘conversations’ with Google Now, Alexa, Cortina and Siri, to some of the most sophisticated and convincing interactions with digital constructs of various kinds, every day more people either choose to live with or find themselves by default living among ‘intelligent machines’ and/or artificial intelligences featuring the impressive satisficing abilities of heuristic algorithms. We are in the midst of a culture-wide Turing Test as these systems continue to push the envelope toward convincingly simulating the experience of talking and/or interacting with other humans. As the technological augmentation and digital bootstrapping of our species continues to unfold, what specific changes to the human sensorium are in the offing? How are vision, hearing, memory and other components of perception and cognition being altered along the way? What does the future hold for the kind of communication, being and seeing in the world afforded by these everyday artifacts? Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological approach and McLuhan's general ‘prosthesis thesis’ provide some of the theoretical underpinning for what promises to be a collection of intimate analyses of recent consumer-level developments incorporating systems built around (or, designed primarily to facilitate) artificial intelligence and machine learning. What’s becoming clear is that many of the attendant devices and systems play with perception and fiddle with the phenomenological aspects of human experience in unprecedented ways. Contributors to this panel should focus on the present moment and emerging future of automated systems, AI, machine learning, augmented sensory apparatuses, remote communication and control systems, and the like. New Report on Civic Media Practice

Dear Friends and Colleagues, I’m excited to share a new report published by the Engagement Lab called *Civic Media Practice: Identification and Evaluation of Media and Technology That Facilitates Democratic Process*. Funded by the MacArthur Foundation, our report is based on over 40 interviews with practitioners and focuses specifically on those using media tools to form relationships and build trust in their communities. The report presents a method of process, paying attention to four specific activities: - Network Building - Holding Space for Discussion - Distributing Ownership - Persistent Input We provide recommendations for practitioners and funders as they create and support civic media practice. The institution of civic media is nascent. This report is meant to solidify common principles and provide direction for those invested in transforming civic life through media practice. Opportunity: Digital Humanities Research Institute (deadline Feb 26)

Hello everyone, I’m the new coordinator for the Digital Humanities Research Institute (DHRI), which will take place this summer. I thought that our call for participation would be interesting to some members of this network. I wanted to forward this to all of you since the deadline is coming up soon – February 26 is around the corner. See the call below for more information. All best, Kalle -- The Digital Humanities Research Institute (DHRI) is a ten-day residential workshop to be held from June 11–20, 2018 at The Graduate Center, CUNY. During the DHRI, which is supported by an National Endowment for the Humanities Institutes in Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities grant, participants will explore interdisciplinary, digital humanities research and teaching with leading DH scholars, develop core computational research skills through hands-on workshops, and begin developing versions of the DHRI for their own communities. When participants return to New York in June 2019 to report on their experiences, they will become the core members of a growing network of distributed digital humanities research institutes, and their reflections will inform the publication of a guide to leading digital humanities skill workshops in a variety of institutional contexts. Short courses—or “bootcamps”—that last anywhere from one day to two months are an increasingly popular way to offer intensive training in digital tools and skills over a short period of time; however, these courses are resource-intensive to run, reach a limited audience, and rarely offer ongoing support. As part of a commitment to building a vibrant community of scholars who make critical use of technology in their teaching and research, the CUNY Graduate Center ran three week-long institutes between 2016 and 2017, which offered a combined 100 hours of instruction on digital research methods to more than 100 students, faculty, staff, and librarians across the CUNY system. Demand for foundational digital research skills remains high, as we have had to turn away as many participants for each institute as we are able to accept. We believe that all participants are experts in something, but none are experts in all areas. By fostering a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment where humanities research questions, methods, and values are most significant, we work to build a cooperative learning experience. Building on three years of leading successful interdisciplinary Digital Research Institutes at the highly diverse City University of New York, we have established an approach that leverages participant’s strengths, disciplinary interests, and research interests. Students work at round tables to encourage social interaction, conversation, and collaboration, and significant time is spent addressing questions about the appropriateness and consequences of digital methods, ethical concerns, project proposal development, and presentation of digital scholarship to multiple audiences. DHRI emphasizes foundational skills because we believe that it is the most effective path toward enabling digital humanities researchers to become self-teachers and mentors in their own right. Many bootcamp-style intensives prioritize instrumental outcomes, such as whether students can “write a for loop” or create a website. While these results are desirable, we find that students who know how to use the command line, read technical documentation, and reason about systems are more self-sufficient and better prepared to approach technology (and technical rhetoric) with a critical eye. This leads to second-and third-order effects as students teach themselves and teach others, and also provides a common conceptual vocabulary and skill set that serves as a basis for forming strong collaborations in the future. Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria: * Commitment to attending all 10 days of the June 2018 and 2 days of the June 2019 institutes; * Demonstrated interest in and responsibility for “digital humanities community building” (This can be through a regional digital humanities group as a volunteer, as a post-doc in a university library, a visiting scholar at a liberal arts college, a faculty member creating a DH reading group, a curator or archivist at a historical society, library, or other humanities-oriented organization. Position title is not important. What is important is your ability to explain your responsibility or interest in building communities of DH practice.); * A letter of support from a group, organization, or institution stating they will support your efforts to run a Digital Humanities Research Institute (Support does not have to be financial. It should simply recognize that your activities are recognized and welcomed by the organization.); * Interest in helping to build a network of institute leaders through sharing of curricular materials and engaging in online community-support; * An articulation of a DH project idea that you find interesting and would like to pursue or have already begun; * An explanation of how you confront and overcome technical difficulties you have experienced in the past. We are looking for participants who represent diverse DH areas of interest (disciplines, methods, project-types), who work at a wide range of institutional types (universities, community colleges, libraries, archives, museums, historical associations), and who reflect an array of professional roles from graduate students to experienced faculty to librarians, administrators, museum curators, archivists and more. Ideal participants will be able to demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills and a willingness to confront and overcome frustration. No previous technical experience is required. Applications will not be evaluated based on familiarity with existing technologies, though we are happy to hear about your aspirations and the skills you would like to develop for future work. These examples show how imaginaries of future societies are enacted to promote digital innovations or legitimate certain modes of internet governance. They illustrate how software providers, tech companies and legislators dig into the rich pool of cultural norms, visions and values to support (or question) digital tools, rules and regulations. Future prospects seem to be central for making decisions in the present. What role do future imaginaries perform in the making and governing of present digital technology? How are they mobilised to push or oppose digital innovations such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things, blockchain technology or open source/open data projects? How are prospective imaginaries shaped in policy discourses and governance practices regarding networked technology and global data flows? What significance do European specificities have in global technology imaginations? Can different mechanisms be identified in mainstream discourses and counter-narratives? What happens if future scenarios are contested and digital promises become contradictory? Themes of the Workshop These are central questions to be discussed in our workshop. We welcome theoretical, methodological and empirical contributions that help us understand how the future is mobilized to make and govern digital technology in the present. The workshop is organized around three central themes: 1. Theories and concepts to analytically grasp future visions and their roles in the making and governance of digital technology 2. Methods and tools to analyze the nexus between future imaginations and their functions in and impact on policy-making and technology development 3. Data & Society is seeking a Director of Research

In 2013, I started Data & Society as an experiment. I imagined a research institute and a think/do tank all in one, bringing together researchers and practitioners and misfit toys. This crazy endeavor has worked better than I ever imagined. We’re now in the process of building the structures needed to make it a more sustainable organization. We’ve brought in a phenomenal executive director (Janet Haven) who understands the civil society and tech worlds deeply. And now we need a director of research who can work with me to create/build out our research strategy, mentor/manage researchers, and otherwise help support the development of important, rigorous, and impactful research. This is a super important hire for the future of D&S. I expect that the right person will be mid or late career and have extensive experience doing qualitative research and playing a leadership role in research environments (either academic or not). Data & Society is looking for an exceptional candidate to lead our growing, interdisciplinary Research Team as the Director of Research (DoR). The DoR is a new, senior, and central role at Data & Society. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the power of evidence and research to drive impact. They will be an accomplished scholar and a dedicated academic mentor, with deep team management experience. Data & Society’s DoR will bring their own disciplinary and topical expertise to the team, but will be capable and comfortable developing and supporting research across a range of themes, disciplines, and topics. This crucial role at Data & Society will work closely with danah boyd, Founder and President, to envision, articulate, and manage toward a broader research vision. The DoR will be responsible for ensuring the rigor, quality, and value of our research outputs, and for strengthening the research culture at the organization. They will also be encouraged to maintain and build their own research agenda and publishing practice, and to build or expand a profile as a public intellectual in their own right. Responsibilities Research: - Develop and implement overall research strategy for the organization, working closely with Founder/President, Executive Director, and research-oriented advisors, with an eye to impact on evolving field debates. - Ensure quality of Data & Society research outputs, including implementing a rigorous and transparent review process that includes a range of scholars. - Maintain an active profile as a researcher and scholar. Management: - Serve as the senior leader of our in-house research team of approximately 25 people, including initiative leads, researchers, research analysts, and post-doctoral scholars. - Directly supervise research initiative leads to develop and implement research strategy within thematic verticals. - Collaborate with Managing Director of Research and other directors and managers at Data & Society on finance/budget oversight, administration, human resources, communications, programs, and publishing. - Serve on the Managers’ Team at Data & Society, representing research culture and concerns within organizational leadership. - Share in fundraising and funder relations responsibilities for the Research Team with Executive Director, Founder/President, and individual researchers. Mentorship: - Build the research culture at Data & Society. With support from the Managing Director of Research, the DoR will lead the development of policies, norms, best practices, and research infrastructure geared to produce rigorous, frame-breaking, and timely research products. - Mentor D&S scholars, both directly and by developing mentorship norms and structures that leverage the broader Data & Society network. - Incorporate faculty fellows into the research team for discrete periods of time. - With an eye to fieldbuilding, enhance and sustain the network of researchers whom we work with in academia and beyond. Public outreach: - Represent Data & Society’s work externally to media, funders, civil society, industry, and government as needed. - With support from other D&S teams and resources, ensure that researchers are able to represent their work in multiple venues and to multiple audiences. Qualifications - PhD in the social sciences or related field and experience with qualitative sociotechnical research; - 10+ years academic or research work experience post-PhD; - Extensive academic and non-academic publication history; - Extensive professional experience in university or institute research environments; - Experience in research team building and management; - Public profile and ability to connect with non-academic audiences via writing and speaking; - Expertise in the social and cultural implications of data-centric and automated technologies; - Deep understanding of the public and closed-door debates occurring in media, government, the technology industry, and civil society around the issues raised by data-centric and automated technologies, and a clear set of ideas of the ways in which research can influence and shape those decision-making venues; - Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience managing down, laterally, and up for successful outcomes; - Comfort with a fast-paced work environment at a young and rapidly evolving organization. Practical considerations 1. This is not a remote position; you must work full time from the Data & Society office in the Flatiron section of New York City, however this role does allow for some flexible scheduling and telecommuting; 2.
