CFP HICSS-52> Collective Intelligence and Crowds
by Fichman, Pnina 15 Mar '18

15 Mar '18

Minitrack: Collective Intelligence and Crowds HICSS 52 http://hicss.hawaii.edu/ Track: Digital and Social Media January 8-11, 2019, Maui, Hawaii, USA This minitrack is open to analysis of collective intelligence, knowledge creation, and crowdsourcing. We think that assemblages of people and machines are making new forms of organization possible, and we are interested in research that explores these new forms of organization. The minitrack invites papers that look at crowd sourcing, at idea generation, at remixing communities, and hybrid organizations in which learning machines plays a strong role. We live surrounded by socially constructed identities – organizations, nations, websites – all of which are constituted through a complex interplay of interactions, a kind of distributed cognition. These Internet platforms allow people to aggregate knowledge from socially distant areas. They also allow diverse groups of people – and maybe autonomous learning machines – to negotiate identities. With these socio-technical configurations we can build collective intelligences that themselves will steer the quest for knowledge. These collectives can be self-catalyzing, deciding individually or collaboratively what to do next, out of which novel and practical ideas emerge. While these open design collectives rely on organic growth and slow embedding of members in the network, alternative structures based on crowds can be assembled more rapidly. Between the two extremes are a host of different organizational and social structures, in which committed members of a community create, improve, and share ideas. The output of these socio-technical systems often takes the form of digital media, and their traces are varied, ranging from ephemeral short messages to curated collaborative knowledge repositories. We are interested in 1) papers that observe, analyze, or visualize these socio-technical structures and their outputs: for example, analyses of open design and open source collectives 2) papers that analyze the phenomena of crowdsourcing, collective intelligence and collaborative mass knowledge production; 3) design research that creates and evaluates new tools and processes for crowds and communities; and 4) papers that simulate the production processes and outcomes through software. We are open to papers that explore unusual ways of modeling emergent organizations: models that demonstrate or reflect the influence of social systems on user behaviors, models that consider the multiple connections between people, technology, and institutions, models of technological and social affordances, models that break personal identity into sub-relations, models that examine the emergence of roles, identity, and institutions, as well as socio-technical models of deviance and disruption. We are particularly interested in papers that apply the foundational ideas of James Coleman, James March, Herb Simon, Mark Granovetter, Harrison White, Charles Tilly and related scholars to modern information systems. We are open to papers concerned with how to visualize large scale social phenomena. And papers that analyze the role machine algorithms and human processes play in our politics and our personal interactions. In sum, the content of the minitrack is open to analysis of collective intelligence, new sociotechnical configuration of knowledge creation, and crowdsourcing. Included also is the analysis of social interaction as a way of describing underlying social structure. Thus, the track is open to a wide range of content areas that lend themselves to the analysis of relations between people, collectives, and machines, as well as the products produced as a result of these relations. Call for Papers: Hate speech as political communication; global uses and abuses (edited version)
by Matti Pohjonen 15 Mar '18

15 Mar '18

Please find the edited version of the call for proposal -- there were a few mistakes/attributions that needed to be changed. Apologies for the inconvenience. ** International workshop/conference Title: Hate speech as political communication; global uses and abuses* Convenors: Dina Matar, Centre for Global Media and Communication & Matti Pohjonen, researcher/research associate CGMC* Venue: Khalili Lecture Theatre, SOAS* Date: 31 May 2018* Time 10:00 to 17:00* Call for papers: The public, and intellectual, mood about new media's promise to bring about positive change globally, has recently turned eerily grim: the wisdom of crowds has been replaced by disinformation and fake news; grassroots activism by populism identified by its use of racist, xenophobic and misogynist hate speech and images in public and media spaces. Indeed, it seems that one of the most urgent debates in our contemporary social and political lives has become the way communication is failing us. As key events around the emergence of the Islamic State/Daesh, the Trump presidency and the resurgence of extreme far-right movements in Europe and the US attest, a new lexicon of online political tactics has emerged researchers are struggling to come with a vocabulary to describe: terrorist recruitment campaigns on social media; coordinated troll attacks aimed at silencing critical voices; Twitter bots manipulating social media popularity rankings; and online ecosystems of fake news influencing elections and eroding the foundations of democracy itself. Yet despite these visible public controversies, there is still little scholarly agreement on how to understand the ill-effects of’ internet’ freedoms and relate them to the much-contested concept of freedom of speech. Much of the academic writing on hate speech remains concerned with cause-and-effect, and, in particular, to tracking how or whether such negative online speech can lead to violence offline. The expanding literature suggests that such online activity can indeed contribute to violence offline, but it remains theoretically unspecified what the differentiated role of “online” activity is, and how this causal or quasi-causal relationship can be determined in the first place. Furthermore, there is little or no attention to different, and perhaps contextual, understandings of the “right to communicate”, often referred to as the blanket term ‘freedom of speech’, nor to what specific media regulations there are in diverse political/cultural contexts. Finally, while much scholarly attention has been accorded to the rise of online hate speech in the Western world particularly in the context of migration and Islamophobia, little attention has been paid to similar phenomena in Asia, Africa and the Middle East where different socio-historical contexts and histories of media practices need to be acknowledged. This workshop seeks to move beyond the relatively safe purview of Western liberal democracies and address how global hate speech debates have also been widely used as a proxy for all other kinds of other purposes by different actors. Indeed, as Gagliardone at al (2015) write "accusations of fomenting hate speech may be traded among political opponents or used by those in power to curb dissent and criticism (2015: 10)." The freedom of speech organisation, Article 19 (2015: 16), similarly cautions against "too readily identifying expressions as "hate speech" ... as its use can also have negative consequences ... and can be abused to justify inappropriate restrictions on the right to freedom of expression, in particular in cases of marginalised or vulnerable communities." These concerns become more urgent to address in Asia, Africa and the Middle East and Africa where real contexts of protracted conflict and displacement, control measures by political elites and would-be political actors, as well as the absence of a consensual approach to understanding what ‘the right to communicate’ means complicate a causal analysis. Given these difficulties in understanding the widespread rise in the hate speech phenomena worldwide, this one-day workshop approaches these important debates about hate speech through a comparative perspective. Drawing on the concept of “extreme speech” (Pohjonen and Udupa 2017) – developed to foreground such culturally-situated contexts behind online hate speech in different parts of the world – the workshop thus focuses on how the discourse of hate speech itself has been used and abused as a distinct form of political communication by different state and non-state actors globally. Foregrounding cultures of communication in the analysis, allows us to focus on the symbiotic relationship between language, culture and politics as well as on diverse practices and particular histories of speech cultures. By using comparative approaches that address when and what form does hate speech take, we hope to complicate the discourse of Internet “risk” increasingly invoked to legitimate online speech restrictions and ask questions about how and under what circumstances do different online actors engage in hate speech, and with what implications, thus widening the focus beyond the West to the rapidly expanding online worlds of the Global South. We are interested in arguments/articles around mediated hate speech in non-Western contexts, including countries in Asia, Africa, Middle East, South America and their diasporas. Topics include but are not limited to: - Hate speech in the context of social, political and ethnic conflict - Hate speech and freedom of expression - Media regulation, law and hate speech - Gendering hate speech - Hate speech as a form of media practice - Vernacular language and hate speech - Hate speech as a form of political violence and/or resistance - The uses and abuses of hate speech as instruments of power and control - Genealogies of online hate cultures - Hate speech and theories of political communication Please send your abstracts (300 words) to Dina Matar at dm27(a)soas.ac.uk by 31st of March, 2018. Notifications about acceptance will be sent by 14th of April. Abstracts should contain an outline of the argument and how it fits the theme of the workshop. Please include a brief biography and affiliation together with the abstracts. ** Dr. Matti Pohjonen Researcher | Occasional Artist | Weary-eyed futurist matti-pohjonen.com | Twitter <https://twitter.com/objetpetitm> | Facebook <https://www.facebook.com/mattipohjonen> | Linked-in <https://www.linkedin.com/in/matti-pohjonen-3a087553/>

[IEEE GLOBECOM] Call for papers: SAC on Social Networks
by Eugene 15 Mar '18

15 Mar '18

Call for Papers IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM) SAC on Social Networks (December 9 to 13, 2018 in Abu Dhabi) Scope and Motivation: Recently, social network research has advanced rapidly with the prevalence of the online social applications and mobile social communications systems. Online social networks have generated a significant share of the Internet traffic and become a dominant form of social interactions on the Internet. In addition to utilizing a desktop computer to write blogs, upload photos and chat with friends, an explosively increasing number of people are now used to share personal contents to friends on the fly with mobile devices, thanks to the development of broadband wireless networks and location sensing technologies. Facing this trend, researchers are increasingly interested in addressing a wide spectrum of challenges in social networks, such as developing social-aware algorithms for communications systems, identifying the static topological common structures and information/influence flows, analyzing the dynamic social media and evolutions of social graphs, and exploiting location-based and contextual information embedded in mobile social networks to create innovative applications. In light of the above crucial needs, Selected Areas in Communication Symposium in Social Networks will serve as a forum for researchers and technologists to discuss the state-of-the-art, present their contributions, and set future directions in social networks. Main Topics of Interest: In light of this trend, Selected Areas on Communication Symposium in Social Networks solicits original research papers on topics including, but not limited to: !P Social-aware network solutions in communications systems !P Cross-layer design for social networks and the underlying communications platforms !P Optimization and protocol design for mobile social networks !P Network graph modeling, measurements, simulations, and experiments !P Analysis of dynamics and trends in the evolutions of social networks !P Analysis and control of belief, influence, and rumor propagations in social environments !P Analysis of social media, trust, and reputation !P Privacy and security in social network !P Social signal processing !P Data mining, machine learning, information retrieval, and artificial intelligence in social contexts !P Infrastructure, platform, protocol design, and optimization for mobile social clouds and social Internet-of-Things !P Innovative applications in social networks and services for mobile Internet, multimedia networks, mobile e-commerce, and cyber-physical systems !P Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research on social networks All final submissions should be written in English with a maximum paper length of six (6) printed pages (10-point font) including figures without incurring additional page charges. ICA-Preconference "Articulating Voice. The Expressivity and Performativity of Media Practices"
by Leif Kramp 14 Mar '18

14 Mar '18

ICA-Preconference “ARTICULATING VOICE. THE EXPRESSIVITY AND PERFORMATIVITY OF MEDIA PRACTICES” Sponsored by the Philosophy, Theory and Critique (PTC) Division of the International Communication Association Event date: 24 May 2018, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Prague, Czech Republic Location: Main Conference Hotel (Hilton Prague) Organizers: Christian Pentzold (University of Bremen), Kenzie Burchell (University of Toronto), Olivier Driessens (University of Cambridge), Alice Mattoni (Scuola Normale Superiore), John Postill (RMIT University), Cara Wallis (Texas A&M University) “Media matter most when they seem not to matter at all.” (Wendy Chun) But how can we understand the practices through which innovations in media and digital data move from being unexpected, novel, and impactful to the negotiated, embedded, and habitual? The pre-conference takes issue with the mundane yet pervasive nature of media habits, rituals, and customs. It assesses the purchase of practice-based approaches in order to see under what conditions and with what consequences they enter studies in communication and media. In particular, we invite participants to consider the expressive and performative dimension of what people actually do and say in relation to media and to the wider communication ecologies in which these articulations take place. We are especially interested in contributions that examine how voices are expressed, represented, or muted and that study the ways practices of voice combine, overlap, or collide with other mediated activities in contemporary societies. With this, we strive for an explanation and critical appreciation of media practices whose accomplishment is a perennial exercise in which we find ourselves immersed. CfP: Algorithmic accountability reporting track at EIJC18 & DataHarvest Conference
by Matthias Spielkamp | iRights.info 14 Mar '18

14 Mar '18

Dear AIR colleagues, I'd appreciate it if you could spread the word! Call for participation: Algorithmic accountability reporting track at EIJC18 & DataHarvest Conference, Mechelen, Belgium, May 24 to 27 Do you have a great story to share of how you investigated an automated decision making (ADM) system? Are you in the middle of doing research on an ADM and can tell us a little about how it's going? Do you have a great idea for probing an ADM system but can't find collaborators to do it with? We’d love to hear your story! At this year’s European Investigative Journalism Conference (EIJC/DataHarvest), Journalismfund and AlgorithmWatch will host a dedicated algorithmic accountability reporting track. For this track, we are looking for examples of stories and ongoing research in the field of ADM. Yours doesn't have to be the next Machine Bias sensation (although we wouldn't mind, of course) – in fact, it could even be a failure, as long as it's an instructive one. We're interested to hear about all kinds of journalistic investigation into automated systems: be it credit scoring, border control, media curation, health technologies or recruitment systems – or something we ourselves have never even thought of. If it's unclear what we mean by ADM systems, have a look at our manifesto. The EIJC/DataHarvest takes place from May 24 to 27 in Mechelen, Belgium. A limited number of travel grants can be made available upon application. Mail before April 1st to ms(a)algorithmwatch.org and brigitte.alfter(a)journalismfund.eu Thanks a lot! Matthias

Just out: On Editorialization by Marcello Vitali-Rosati

On Editorialization: Structuring Space and Authority in the Digital Age by Marcello Vitali-Rosati INC Theory on Demand #26 Read it and download it for free here: http://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/tod-26-on-editorialization-stru… <http://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/tod-26-on-editorialization-stru…> In On Editorialization: Structuring Space and Authority in the Digital Age Marcello Vitali-Rosati examines how authority changes in the digital era. It is said that authority has vanished in the age of the web, since the spatial relationships that authority depends on are thought to have levelled out: there are no limits or boundaries, no hierarchies or organized structures anymore. Vitali-Rosati claims the opposite to be the case: digital space is well-structured and material and has specific forms of authority. Editorialization is one key process that organizes this space and thus brings into being digital authority. Investigating this process of editorialization, Vitali-Rosati reveals how politics can be reconceived in the digital age. Marcello Vitali-Rosati is Associate Professor in the Department of French Literature at the University of Montreal and holds the Canada Research Chair on Digital Textualities. In his research he develops a philosophical approach to the changes brought by digital technologies. Previous publications include Riflessione e trascendenza: Itinerari a partire da Levinas (ETS, 2003), Corps et virtuel: Itineraires àpartir de Merleau-Ponty (L’Harmattan, 2009), S’orienter dans le virtuel (Hermann, 2012), and Egarements: Amour, mort et identites numeriques (Hermann, 2014). CFP HICSS52 Minitrack title: Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS Track: Internet and the Digital Economy January 8-11, 2019 Maui, Hawaii, USA Conference Website: http://hicss.hawaii.edu/ Author Guidelines: http://hicss.hawaii.edu/tracks-and-minitracks/authors/ Globalization has historically been tied to technological innovation, and the present era of a networked information society is no different. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have provided the infrastructure for multinational businesses, created new cultural connections irrespective of geographic boundaries and distances, and allowed an increasingly mobile global population to be connected to their friends, families, and cultures no matter where they are. The issues surrounding global, international, and cross cultural issues in Information Systems (IS) attracted much scholarly attention and have been explored under myriad contexts. Our minitrack focuses on the sociotechnical dynamics and the ways in which the Internet affects people, groups, organizations, and societies. We are in particular interested in the impact of global, international, and cross-cultural issues on ICT development, implementation and use across the globe. The minitrack welcomes submissions that relate to all aspects of global IS, or IS research situated in a global, international or cross-cultural context. The minitrack is open to all methodological approaches and perspectives. We are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • The impacts of cultural values on: 1) ICT design, adoption, and use; 2) Policies and practices of big data collection and use. • Cross cultural studies of: 1) ICT adoption, use and development; 2) Quantification of self at work, by individuals or organizations; 3) Big data collection and use. • Issues relating to: 1) Globally distributed teams; 2) Internet adoption and the digital society at the national level; 3) Global knowledge management; 4) Cross-national legislation and regulation; 4) Global ICT governance; 5) Global Cloud sourcing strategies; 6) Effects of global social computing on work organization and practices; Global impacts of big data on governments, multinational companies, NGOs and other organizations. • Single country studies showing implications for other locations or results different from other contexts. • Multi-country studies of ICT adoption, use, and development. Announcement: African American Digital Humanities Conference CFP
by Catherine Knight Steele 13 Mar '18

13 Mar '18

The African American Digital Humanities (AADHum) initiative at the University of Maryland is excited to announce that we are now accepting proposals for our first national conference: *Intentionally Digital, Intentionally Black. * * What happens to digital humanities inquiry when we begin with Black culture, Black thought, and Black persons at the center of our endeavors? How does this shift challenge and expand both the humanities and the digital? What happens to Black and African American humanities research when we lead with the digital? Interdisciplinary inquiry into both the online practices of black users and humanities research focused on black history and culture using digital tools has expanded in the past decade. * *Too often, this work happens on the margins of established disciplines, boundaries, and paradigms. Rather than arriving at black digital research as an afterthought or a tactic to achieve “diversity”, privileging black theory and black culture in our scholarship can provide alternate paradigms through which to understand the digital and the humanistic. * *The first national conference of the African American Digital Humanities (AADHum) Initiative at the University of Maryland will explore how digital studies and digital humanities-based research, teaching, and community projects can center African American history and culture. AADHum invites submissions that may include scholarly inquiry into Black diasporic and African American uses of digital technologies; digital humanities projects that focus on black history and culture; race and digital theory; the intersection of black studies and digital humanities; information studies, cultural heritage, and community-based digital projects; pedagogical interventions; digital tools and artifacts; black digital humanities and memory; social media and black activism/movements, etc. * The conference will take place *October 18-20, 2018 *at the University of Maryland, College Park and feature keynote speakers *Andre Brock *(Univ. of Michigan) and *Jessica Marie Johnson* (Johns Hopkins Univ.). Interested participants are invited to submit proposals for individual papers, panels, digital posters, tools/digital project demonstrations, and roundtables by *April 9, 2018*. Proposals should be submitted online at: https://www.conftool.pro/aadhum2018/. For more information, please see the Call for Proposals on or check out our website: http://aadhum.umd.edu/conference/. Questions can be directed to: aadhum(a)umd.edu. We look forward to reviewing your proposals and seeing you in College Park this Fall!
