Networked (in)justice Information, Communication & Society #AoIR2017 special issue published
by Leurs, K.H.A. (Koen) 13 Mar '18

13 Mar '18

Dear colleagues and friends, Alison and I are extremely excited to announce the publication of the #AoIR2017 special issue Information, Communication & Society, which we have titled Networked (in)justice. The issue can be accessed through https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rics20/21/6. For the last 10 years, Information, Communication & Society has published a special issue including some highlights from the annual Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) conference. This, the 11th special issue, continues in the tradition of sharing rigorous, interdisciplinary, critical research from the event. #AoIR2017 was themed on ‘Networked Publics’ and took place from 18 to 21 October in Estonia in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. The conference was hosted by the programme chair Andra Siibak, Professor of Media Studies at the University of Tartu, and facilitated by the Institute of Social Studies and the Centre for the Information Society. Held at the Dorpat Convention Center in picturesque downtown Tartu, the conference drew together attendees from a broad range of national, disciplinary, and methodological backgrounds, and we present here a selection of papers reflecting this broadness and diversity of internet research. Three hundred and thirty-eight participants from 29 countries participated in #AoIR2017, and the programme included the presentation of 129 papers, alongside 18 pre-constituted panels, 4 fishbowl sessions, 10 roundtables, an experimental session, 9 pre-conference workshops and a doctoral colloquium. The pre-conferences focused on topics ranging from visual social media research to digital methods to academic freedom to sessions dedicated to the experiences of early career researchers. This special issue is pleased to share the emphasis on the diverging and contradictory consequences of the formation of networked publics. We have chosen to focus in particular on studies of publics that scrutinize how they may exacerbate injustices or work towards social justice. We propose a focus on networked (in)justice drawing attention to: How mainstream scholarly conceptualizations of publics and platforms prioritize some networked publics and marginalize others How networked publics are shaped as an assemblage of hardware, design, algorithms, discourse, bodies, collectives, and affect How networked publics reflect and shape intersecting power relations of geography, gender, race, and sexuality, among others How networked publics are distinctively local, but simultaneously shaped by transnational and global dynamics. Special issue line-up: #IAmNotAfraidToSayIt: Stories of Sexual Violence as Everyday Political Speech on Facebook Tetyana Lokot Platform vulnerabilities: Harassment and misogynoir in the digital attack on Leslie Jones Caitlin Lawson My life is a mess: Self-deprecating relatability and collective identities in the memification of student issues Kristine Ask, Crystal Abidin Gay men’s digital cultures beyond Gaydar and Grindr: LINE use in the gay Chinese diaspora of Australia Wilfred Wang, Elija Cassidy La revolución digital: Mobile media use in contemporary Cuba Justin Grandinetti, Marie Eszenyi Navigating a new life: Syrian refugees and their smartphones in Vienna Katja Kaufmann The mediatization of leadership: grassroots digital facilitators as organic intellectuals, sociometric stars and caretakers Maria Bakardjieva, Mylynn Felt, Delia Dumitrica See https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rics20/21/6 to access all articles, Best wishes, Koen Leurs, also on behalf of Alison Harvey Koen Leurs, PhD Assistant professor Gender & Postcolonial Studies | Department of Media and Culture Studies | Utrecht University, the Netherlands | Muntstraat 2a, 3512 EV room 0.05 | T. + 31 30 253 7844| www.koenleurs.net <http://www.koenleurs.net/> Recent publications: -w/ Sandra Ponzanesi. CFP: More than Critical, More than GIS (a pre-AAG workshop)

FYI. Please fwd widely. Apologies for cross-posting. *Call For Participation* *More than Critical, More than GIS *(a pre-AAG workshop) April 9th, 2018 Please join us for a low-key workshop with community partners at the American Association of Geographers meeting in New Orleans <FYI. Please fwd widely. Apologies for cross-posting. 2nd Call For Participation More than Critical, More than GIS (a pre-AAG workshop) April 9th, 2018 Please join us for a low-key workshop with community partners at the American Association of Geographers meeting in New Orleans (Apr 10-14) focusing on new and continuing topics and debates around mapping and GIS that involve political, cultural, and economic processes and attempts to create better alternatives in NOLA and beyond! In recent years, Critical GIS and similar efforts have seen a resurgence in practice and the debate, including the nature of the term Critical GIS itself. Such evaluations and practices involving geographic data, analysis, and mapping run the gamut from housing and gentrification to indigenous mapping to coastlines and climate change to exposés of gerrymandering to anti-capitalist organizing to new narratives and histories of sexual orientation and more. This workshop seeks to build on these exciting developments to bring together new and established voices engaged in the thought and practice of mappings and GIS work that involves political, cultural, and economic processes. We eschew totemic uses of the terms ‘critical’ and ‘GIS’ that can all-to-often be used to demarcate who and what does and doesn’t belong; rather, we wish to encourage anyone interested to join us to better explore how spatial data, technologies, visualization, and analysis may help us create a better world. Thus, this workshop is about ‘more than gis’ and ‘more than critical’ approaches. Building on the energies of the 2014 Critical GIS meeting at Friday Harbor and the 2017 meeting at McGill University, we seek to gather and learn about diverse voices and approaches in New Orleans. An important aim of this workshop is to engage with and learn from the work that local organizations and individuals are doing in New Orleans, and how that can help reimagine the possibilities for what it means to ‘do critical GIS’. Location: New Orleans, near where the AAG conference will be the next day. Workshop date: April 9th (Monday before the AAG). 10 am - 4 pm Tentative Format: Morning: Introductions, lightning-fast presentations of participants’ work Afternoon: Engagement with community partners, potentially including a tour of geographical organizing in New Orleans, talks by those pursuing social and environmental justice in the region, or a hands-on data workshop on a topic important to New Orleans residents. Late afternoon: Drinks and dinner How to join us: While the workshop is open to all interested parties, we ask that you submit a 100 word expression of interest that describes either A. a relevant project you would like to share with the group or B. your thoughts on how you would like to see ‘Critical GIS’ expanded as a field of research. Please email craig.dalton(a)hofstra.edu by the extended deadline of March 26th, 2017. Dear all, please see below description and details for participating in *IMPAcT A PERVASIVE HEALTH 2018 WORKSHOPhttp://www.grpss.ssr.upm.es/impactworkshop/ <http://www.grpss.ssr.upm.es/impactworkshop/>* *** Please forward to anyone who might be interested *** *Workshop in Pervasive Health 2018* The workshop is colocated with *Pervasive Helth 2018 <http://pervasivehealth.org/>*, the 12th EAI International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare, to be held in New York (US) from May 21 to 24, 2018. IMPAcT Workshop: Improving healthcare through service design and patient empowerment technologies Service design can provide tools for addressing challenges related to the adoption of pervasive health technologies. In this workshop, we will connect people interested in design methods and approaches which address the specific needs of digitalization of healthcare, and possibilities of patient empowerment. Scope and Topics Digitalization of healthcare creates opportunities for services which allow patients to have a stronger role in their care. For example, shared decision-making tools can empower patients in care-related decisions, sensor devices can help patients in building self-awareness of their health, and digital platforms provide new ways for patients to communicate with their peers and care professionals. Service design offers tools for harnessing these new digital enablers for patient empowerment through understanding ecosystems, user journeys and value co-creation models needed for successful implementation and adoption in the context of care. The motivation of the workshop is to connect people who have an interest in creating knowledge and tools addressing specific needs of designing services addressing the issues related to digitalization of services in healthcare context. In current service design methods, there is a gap in addressing digital nature of the service, for example interoperability, usability, security, personalization of the service pathway. In addition, there is need for addressing the specific characteristics of healthcare context in service design guidelines and approaches, such as designing for patient empowerment, health-behaviour change or self-management of chronic diseases. This workshop aims at creating new knowledge on how service design methods, tools and approaches can help in addressing digitalization in healthcare. *The workshop **welcome** papers on:* Tailored technologies and services for person/patient empowerment, from prevention to treatment. Caregiver-Patient collaboration frameworks for decision making. Specific approaches to tackle interoperability, usability, security, in the personalization of the clinical service pathway.
