CfA - Data in Democracy Summer School, 2-6 July
by Tromble, R.K. 06 Mar '18

06 Mar '18

Dear colleagues, I'm very excited to announce the new Data in Democracy Summer School, which will be hosted at Leiden University's campus in The Hague this July. The school will bring together a select group of academics (including grad students) and practitioners who care about promoting the responsible use of data and technology in democratic societies. It is proactively cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral, and anyone who analyzes or otherwise makes use of quantitative data is eligible to apply. The Call for Applications and link to the summer school website are below. Feel free to contact me with any questions at dataindemocracy(a)fsw.leidenuniv.nl<mailto:dataindemocracy@fsw.leidenuniv.nl>. And please share widely! We really want to ensure we are able to put together a diverse group of passionate participants. All the best, Rebekah Dr. Rebekah K. Tromble Assistant Professor Institute of Political Science Leiden University rebekahtromble.net --------------------------------------------------------- Call for Applications - 2018 Data in Democracy Summer School Dates: July 2-6, 2018 Location: The Hague Early-bird application deadline (with reduced fee): April 7th Regular application deadline (with standard fee): April 30th Our Vision #ResponsibleData #ResponsibleTech >From criminal justice to transportation, poverty to "fake news," large-scale data are helping us both understand and address some of the most pressing issues facing modern democracies. And yet analyses and applications of those same data can do real harm. Algorithms used for setting bail can perpetuate racial biases. Calculations employed to improve the efficiency of postal delivery may divert already-scarce resources away from impoverished areas. Enhancing political engagement on social media platforms can promote misinformation, polarization, and distrust. And the list-unfortunately-goes on. How can we maximize the effectiveness of, and minimize potential harms resulting from, the use of data in contemporary democracies? One important answer is to bring more social science into our data practices. Social science perspectives permit a deeper understanding of the social and political processes that generate data-allowing us to more critically unpack what the data represent. And social science research can tell us a great deal about the likely effects of various applications resulting from data analysis. With this in mind, the Data in Democracy Summer School will bring together a select group of practitioners and academics for five days to learn about and apply crucial insights from the social sciences concerning the forms, functions, and impacts of data in democratic societies. Participants will receive a series of lectures with built-in practical exercises, engage in social and networking activities, and, on the final day, take part in a "hackathon" that capitalizes on participants' diverse backgrounds and experiences as they work together on a problem using real-world data. We are seeking participants from a wide range of fields and backgrounds, and we encourage anyone who holds at least a bachelor's degree (or equivalent work experience) and who works with quantitative data to apply. For more information, please visit: http://summerschool.universiteitleiden.nl/courses/data-in-democracy-1 And feel free to contact us with any questions at dataindemocracy(a)fsw.leidenuniv.nl<mailto:dataindemocracy@fsw.leidenuniv.nl>.

Call for Papers HICSS Minitrack "Collaboration via Social Media"
by Mazarakis, Athanasios 06 Mar '18

06 Mar '18

Call For Papers HICSS-52 Call for papers for the mini-track on: "COLLABORATION VIA SOCIAL MEDIA" Part of the Collaboration Systems and Technology Track of the Fifty-Second Annual Hawai'i International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS) Maui, HI - January 8-11, 2019 Papers are invited for the mini-track on "COLLABORATION VIA SOCIAL MEDIA" as part of the Collaboration Systems and Technology Track at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). Successful collaboration is often difficult and yet interactions on social media are accessible, pervasive, varied, and impactful. The role of social media as a collaboration technology and its impact of the effectiveness and overall success of collaboration must be studied. Collaboration technologies are a critical aspect of institutional and organizational processes that already face many pitfalls such distance between teams, dominance, lack of efficiency, lack of focus, overwhelming information, differing motivations, and groupthink. These aspects are only heightened when artificial elements like bots or other intelligent technologies are considered. The challenge for researchers and practitioners alike is understanding the impact of social media's unstructured and time-differentiated content delivery on collaborative processes, groups, and teams. This is a multi-dimensional challenge spanning technical, behavioral, social, emotional, economic, and political boundaries. This mini-track invites papers that addresses theoretical and practical challenges in assessing, staging, and deploying social media for collaboration within and between organizations, groups, teams, and machines. This mini-track provides one of the key international platforms on which the following issues can be discussed: 1. The impact of the unstructured, non-time-constrained nature of social media interactions on collaborative efforts. 2. Theoretical aspects of social media-facilitated collaboration. 3. User studies concentrating on collaborative social media platforms such as Tumblr, Slack, Trello, wikis, and others. 4. Theoretical approaches and designs of social media enabled collaboration processes, tools, and the frontiers of current knowledge and practice. 5. Processes, interventions, and techniques that focus social media technologies on collaborative problem solving. 6. Empirical studies or case studies that examine the use of social media as collaboration technology. 7. Social media's influence on decision making and collaboration. 8. Evaluation methods and metrics for assessing performance in social media-facilitated collaborative efforts. 9. Fostering collaboration via Social Media through incentive engineering. There are no preferred methodological stances for this mini-track: this mini-track is open to both qualitative and quantitative research, to research from a positivist, interpretivist, or critical perspective, to studies from the lab, from the field, or developmental in nature. Themes and topics of relevance to this mini-track include, but are not limited to (related topics not listed are welcome): Serious collaboration via social media * Theoretical foundations and design methodologies for using social media for productive collaboration * Studies examining how social media improves or degrades shared understanding and group decision-making * Best practices and patterns for social media based collaboration including: development, field experiences, laboratory evaluation of interventions that produce a predictable pattern of collaboration, etc. * The impact of social media on dispersed group processes * Incentives for collaboration, e.g. monetary, non-monetary incentives, in particular also gamification, feedback mechanisms or other techniques, systems and processes * Case studies for effective collaboration via social media Design approaches for social media-facilitated collaboration * Theories, guidelines and strategies for designing social media-facilitated collaboration processes, technologies and systems * Modeling techniques and frameworks to capture asynchronous collaborative interactions, facilitation, and information exchange in groups * Impact assessments of asynchronous communication on collaborative outcomes * Theoretical foundations of productivity, creativity, satisfaction, and other constructs relating to mission-critical tasks for which collaboration processes and systems must be designed * Proof of concept - examples of collaborative processes on social media like Facebook, Tumblr, Slack, Trello, wikis, or boutique collaboration platforms. Social media tool evaluation * Studies that examine specific social media technologies and their impact on team productivity and/or group decision * Theories or practices to conduct change management via social media collaboration * Using social media to mitigate resistance to change in collaborative contexts * Success factors for using social media for collaboration * Studies on the efficacy of interventions intended to leverage social media tools in an organization * Incentives for use/disuse of social media in dispersed collaborative scenarios MINI-TRACK COORDINATORS Margeret Hall (primary contact) University of Nebraska at Omaha Douglas C. Derrick University of Nebraska at Omaha Athanasios Mazarakis Kiel University The purpose of HICSS is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, research results, development activities, and applications among academicians and practitioners in computer-based systems sciences. Call for chapters: Blockchain and Web 3.0: Social, economic, and technological challenges
by Massimo Ragnedda 03 Mar '18

03 Mar '18

Call for Chapters. Blockchain and Web 3.0: Social, economic, and technological challenges Editors have been working with Emily Briggs (Commissioning Editor for Sociology, Routledge) to prepare this proposal. Editors: Massimo Ragnedda, Northumbria University at Newcastle. Giuseppe Destefanis, School of Computer Science, University of Hertfordshire. Deadline for abstracts: *10 April 2018* Notification of acceptance: 20 April 2018 Submission Date: 20 September 2018 This call for chapters has been certified in the Blockchain notary service, Proof of Existence. Blockchain is no longer just about bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in general, but it can be seen as a disruptive and revolutionary technology, which will have major impacts on multiple aspects of our lives. The revolutionary power of such technology can be compared with the revolution sparked by the world wide web and the Internet in general. As the Internet can be seen as a mean for sharing information, so blockchain technologies can be seen as a way to introduce the next level: blockchain allows the possibility of sharing value. This book seeks to underline the risks and opportunities offered by the advent of blockchain technologies and the rise of the web 3.0. Given the nature, the implications and consequences of this new technology, this book will proceed from an interdisciplinary perspective. The core analysis in the book is explaining how such technologies are disruptive and, further, to explain the concrete consequences of these disruptions, in terms of social, economic and technological consequences. We anticipate that the comparative examination of these features will be helpful to clarify the dynamics and consequences of the blockchain technologies in a variety of disciplines settings. Thus, the volume integrates a number of chapters examining disparate settings around the world, all unified around their focus on the phenomenon of blockchain in comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. Proposed structure The book will explore a range of conceptual issues brought to the fore by the digital turn using blockchain case studies. Each chapter should detail its theoretical trajectory and provide at least one case study exemplar. The book will be divided into three main parts: · Blockchain and Digital Media · Technological aspects and consequences of decentralized technologies · Socio-economic aspects and consequences of decentralized technologies Abstracts should include the following information: · Proposed article title · Proposed author names and affiliations · Part (Digital Media, Technological and Socio-economic consequences) and theme being addressed · Purpose/aim of the chapter · Principal body of literature/theoretical framework · Indicative case study Submission Procedure You are invited to submit a word document with a brief author or authors CV (no more than 250 words with titles, affiliations, and contacts), title of the proposal and the abstract (500-700 words). All proposal should be submitted to the following addresses: massimo.ragnedda(a)northumbria.ac.uk and g.destefanis(a)herts.ac.uk *Deadline is 10 April 2018.* The final decision will be notified to the authors by 20 April 2018. Authors will be invited to send a full text by 20 September 2018. The chapter’s length will be 5000-6000 words, including references. Submitted chapters should not have been previously published or sent to another editor. Our tasks and the proposed timeline are as follows: • 30 April 2018 - Completion of Proposal and Submission to Routledge • 20 September 2018 – Manuscripts Due to Editors from All Contributors • 20 October 2018 – Review of Manuscripts Completed & Manuscripts Returned to Contributors • 20 December 2019 – Revised Manuscripts Due from Contributors • 10 January 2019 – Final Manuscript Delivered to Publisher • X/XX/XX – Final Appearance in Print Will Depend on Publisher’s Timeline -- Massimo Ragnedda Senior Lecturer in Mass Communication Northumbria University (Newcastle, UK) mragnedda.wordpress.com skype: massimo.ragnedda http://northumbria.academia.edu/MassimoRagnedda Connect with me on *Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook*

new hourly global compilation of news homepage links
by kalev leetaru 02 Mar '18

02 Mar '18

Thought many of you would find useful - we've just announced today a new hourly compilation of all the hyperlinks found on the homepages of around 50,000 news websites from across the world, including the order they appear on each page, released as an hourly TSV file. This can be used for all kinds of analyses about how news outlets prioritize stories, the kinds of outlinks they include on their homepages, etc. We combine both static HTML scanning and Headless Chrome with behavioral scrolling to handle more complex in-browser dynamically constructed sites. This is an alpha release, so we're very interested in feedback, recommendations of news outlets to add, filters to apply, format changes, etc, so please reach out directly to me with any thoughts as we evolve this dataset. We're particularly interested in expanding the set of local, specialty, topical, citizen, partisan, satirical, "fake news" (construed in the full overused meaning of the phrase) and other kinds of non-traditional media to capture at ever increasing detail how narratives spread and evolve in those ecosystems and especially the ways they transit between them. https://blog.gdeltproject.org/announcing-gdelt-global-frontpage-graph-gfg/ Kalev
