OpenSym 2018 | August 22-24, 2018 | Paris, France | General Call for Papers | Deadline March 15, 2018
by Nicolas Jullien 02 Mar '18

02 Mar '18

Dear all, Just a reminder there are less than 2 weeks left to submit your paper to OpenSym 2018 (March, 15). Conference Website and call for papers: http://opensym.org You'll find at the same address the Doctoral Symposium and the Industrial and Community track calls. Submission: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=opensym2018 (accepted rate in 2017 for the regular research track: 45%) Topics: The conference provides peer-reviewed research tracks on subjects related to open collaboration including: - Open Collaboration Research, esp. Wikis and Social Media - Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) - Open Data, Open Access, and Open Science - Open Education - IT-Driven Open Innovation - Open Policy/Open Government/Open Law - Wikipedia and Wikimedia Research Looking forward to seeing your paper's presentation in Paris Nicolas Jullien, general chair of OpenSym 2018 About the Conference -------------------- OpenSym is the only conference that brings together the different strands of open collaboration research and practice, seeking to create synergies and inspire new collaborations between people from computer science, information science, social science, humanities, and everyone interested in understanding open collaboration and how it is changing our society. This year’s conference will be held in Paris, France on August 22-24, 2018. A Doctoral Symposium will take place on August 21, 2018. OpenSym is held in-cooperation with ACM SIGWEB and ACM SIGSOFT and the conference proceedings will be archived in the ACM digital library like all prior editions. Submission Information and Instructions --------------------------------------- Topics: The conference provides peer-reviewed research tracks on subjects related to open collaboration including: - Open Collaboration Research, esp. Wikis and Social Media - Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) - Open Data, Open Access, and Open Science - Open Education - IT-Driven Open Innovation - Open Policy/Open Government/Open Law - Wikipedia and Wikimedia Research Paper Presentation: OpenSym 2018 will be organized as a one track conference in order to emphasize the interdisciplinary character of this conference and to encourage discussion. Submission Deadline: The research paper submission deadline is March 15th 2018. Submitted papers should present integrative reviews or original reports of substantive new work: theoretical, empirical, and/or in the design, development and/or deployment of novel concepts, systems, and mechanisms. Research papers will be reviewed to meet rigorous academic standards of publication. Papers will be reviewed for relevance, conceptual quality, innovation and clarity of presentation. All the submissions are done via the EasyChair platform, here: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=opensym2018 Paper Length: There is no minimum or maximum length for submitted papers. Rather, reviewers will be instructed to weigh the contribution of a paper relative to its length. Papers should report research thoroughly but succinctly: brevity is a virtue. A typical length of a “long research paper” is 10 pages (formerly the maximum length limit and the limit on OpenSym tracks), but may be shorter if the contribution can be described and supported in fewer pages—shorter, more focused papers (called “short research papers” previously) are encouraged and will be reviewed like any other paper. While we will review papers longer than 10 pages, the contribution must warrant the extra length. Reviewers will be instructed to reject papers whose length is incommensurate with the size of their contribution. Papers should be formatted in ACM SIGCHI paper format. Reviewing is not double-blind so manuscripts do not need to be anonymized. Posters: As in previous years, OpenSym will also be hosting a poster session at the conference. To propose a poster, authors should submit an extended abstract (not more than 4 pages) describing the content of the poster which will be published in a non-archival companion proceedings to the conference. Posters should use the ACM SIGCHI templates for extended abstracts. An example of a poster abstract can be found here. Reviewing is not double-blind so abstracts do not need to be anonymized. Paper Proceedings: OpenSym is held in-cooperation with ACM SIGWEB and ACM SIGSOFT and the conference proceedings will be archived in the ACM digital library like all prior editions. OpenSym seeks to accommodate the needs of the different research disciplines it draws on including disciplines with archival conference proceedings and disciplines where authors usually present at conferences and publish later. Authors, whose submitted papers have been accepted for presentation at the conference have a choice of: having their paper become part of the official proceedings, archived in the ACM Digital Library, having their paper published in the conference website only, with no transfer of copyright from the authors, having no publication record at all but only the presentation at the conference. Response from authors: For the second time at OpenSym, authors will be given the opportunity to write a response to their reviews before final decisions are made. This should be treated as an opportunity to correct any mistakes or misconceptions in the reviews as well as to propose minor changes that the authors can make during the two weeks between notification and the camera-ready deadline. Important Dates Submission deadline: March 15, 2018 Reviews sent to authors: May 11, 2018 Response to reviews from authors due: May 20, 2018 Final decision notification: June 15, 2018 Camera-ready papers due: June 22, 2018 Papers available online: July 13, 2018 Conference Organization The general chairs of the conference are Nicolas Jullien and Olivier Berger, IMT, France. (Reminder) CFPs: Digitising Early Childhood 2018, abstracts due 16 March
by Tama Leaver 02 Mar '18

02 Mar '18

Contemporary children and their parents are inventing what it is to have a digital childhood, and in doing so are introducing families, schools and policy makers to new ways of thinking, doing and being. This conference discusses and expands research trajectories through these uncertainties and also aims to build bridges across the different discipline interests and many strands of research in this area. It will forge a new way forward and consolidate the base of what we already know, revealing what we have yet to investigate and address, and what important insights are emerging that must be taken seriously. Paper abstracts (350 words) and panel proposals (90 minutes) should be sent to digitisingearlychildhood(a)ecu.edu.au prior to 16th March 2018. This conference welcomes papers that address the broadest possible construction of early childhood and the digital. There will be publication opportunities and selected papers will be invites as chapters for an edited collection; papers from the 2017 Conference resulted in a forthcoming volume published by Cambridge Scholars. Topics may include, but are by no means restricted to, the following: Digitisation of early childhood education Literacies at home and school Research methods with very young children Policies, regulations and guidelines Children and their data Children’s online presence(s) Parenting the digital child Children’s culture Cultural difference and digital children Risks and benefits Digital health Changing discourses of childhood Privacy, security and children’s rights Designing digital experiences for children The child in the digital public sphere Online activism and children Gendering (or not) the digital child Conference Location: Perth, Western Australia; 9th-13th July 2018 For full details, please visit: http://www.digitisingearlychildhood.com/

Call for Grant Proposals: Twitter Conversational Health Metrics
by Proferes, Nicholas 01 Mar '18

01 Mar '18

Hi all, This just came across my radar and may be of interest to folks here: https://blog.twitter.com/official/en_us/topics/company/2018/twitter-health-… Twitter has put out a call for proposals on measuring the health of conversation on the platform. Cut and paste from the site below: *** We're committing to helping increase the collective health, openness, and civility of public conversation around the world, and to hold ourselves publicly accountable toward progress. By measuring our contribution to the overall health of the public conversation, we believe we can more holistically approach and measure our impact on the world for years to come. Twitter's health will be built and measured by how we help encourage more healthy debate, conversations, and critical thinking; conversely, abuse, spam and manipulation will detract from it. We are looking to partner with outside experts to help us identify how we measure the health of Twitter, keep us accountable to share our progress with the world and establish a way forward for the long-term. This approach is inspired by work from others in the industry. Cortico, a non-profit research organization, has spent time to more deeply understand the concept of measuring conversational health and developed four indicators to measure it: shared attention, shared reality, variety of opinion, and receptivity. We believe that we can identify indicators of conversational health that are even more specific to Twitter and its impact. We don't have all of the answers and cannot do this alone, but know that the outcome will be stronger when we look to experts around the world for counsel and support. If you're interested in helping us define what health means for Twitter and how we should approach measuring it, please submit your proposal through the form below by Friday, April 13. To Apply Applicants should submit a proposal through the online form available below by Friday, April 13, that includes: Contact information (name, email, organizational details) Your proposed health metrics, and methods for capturing, measuring, evaluating and reporting on such metrics Anticipated resource requirements and methodology Proposed output from your proposal and estimated time needed to capture, measure and evaluate health metrics Relevant, peer-reviewed, publications and papers Please make clear in your proposal if this is a joint application with another institution. Award Successful applicants will collaborate directly with Twitter's team, receive public data access and meaningful funding for their research. Funding will be provided as an unrestricted gift to the proposer's organization(s), to be provided in full at the start of the project. Our expectation is that successful projects will produce peer-reviewed, publicly available, open-access research articles and open source software whenever possible. Timeline Submissions are due Friday, April 13, and selected applicants will be invited to share further details on their proposals during May and June. We expect to announce the first selected projects in July. Terms of Agreement This proposal request in no way constitutes an agreement between Twitter and any applicant. The issuance of this proposal request does not imply that Twitter is making an offer to do business. Twitter reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel this solicitation and proposal request at any time during the process. This proposal request is not and shall not be considered an "agreement to negotiate." Twitter reserves the right to make any award, group of awards, or no award as it determines in its sole discretion. Twitter may, in its discretion, amend, supplement, terminate, modify, negotiate or otherwise change any provision or part of this proposal request, including but not limited to the evaluation criteria, the process used for evaluation, and/or the expected timeline, at any time prior. Any award of this contract will be made to applicant(s) at the sole discretion of Twitter after consideration of the factors stated above. Twitter shall provide only public Twitter data (which shall be used solely for the purposes stated above) and such use shall be subject to additional terms and conditions (including, but not limited to, terms similar to Twitter's Developer Terms). Further terms may be included in a contract with successful applications. Reminder: CFP Localising Sociological Inquiry
by Jaime García Iglesias 28 Feb '18

28 Feb '18

The Place I Call Research: Localizing Sociological Inquiry Call for Papers Despite the recent focus in social sciences on situating one’s research, the actual process of selecting and navigating particular community contexts remains a difficult task. The reconfiguring of local spaces into sites of research is particularly relevant now, as the internet and new media blur previously taken-for-granted boundaries and processes of localization. This conference seeks to engage researchers across the social sciences and humanities to discuss the role of places in their work. In particular, we are interested in exploring the ways in which methodologies are contextualized to tackle both new spaces and ‘old’ spaces in the flux of change. However we are also attentive to the interaction between researchers and the larger community regarding those spaces, such as public policy development that is contextually bound and the impact of business models in the alteration and creation of places. The conference will take place at the University of Manchester on 15 June 2018. It is an all-day event which will feature both academic papers and public events including a roundtable with community members, a public screening, and an exhibition. Attendance is free. We welcome submissions for 15 minute papers from doctoral and masters’ students and early-career researchers across multiple disciplines, especially sociology, anthropology, economics, politics, geography, public health, and cultural studies. Some of the conference’s key themes are: - addressing changing political and social contexts in our research - urban/rural dichotomies - new and old spaces: queer, postcolonial and online contexts - place ownership, no-place, and homelessness - how social, cultural, and community challenges affect fieldwork - developing community-specific methodologies and research questions - how theories and knowledges are context-specific, as well as the potential for trans-contextual research Abstract submissions should be between 150 and 300 words and include five keywords. Creative research methodologies are welcomed. Scholars are encouraged to reflect on local engagement in their papers. Deadline for submission is March 26, 2017. Artificial Intelligence for Public sector IT: call4speakers / panelists
by Diana Ishmatova 28 Feb '18

28 Feb '18

[Apologies for cross-posting] We are organising and looking for speakers / panelists to join one of our leading panels at the mobileGov World Summit 2018 and Global mobileGov Awards, to be held in Brighton UK, during June 14-15, at the Hilton Metropole. www.m4life.org Titles and short descriptions of the panels: *Artificial Intelligence and public sector workforce: job displacement vs job creation* AI has already a substantial impact on government work - AI is used in automating mundane tasks and helping handle complex and time-consuming tasks and just like with earlier technologies, AI in government is promised to reduce costs, free time and deliver better and faster services to the citizens. But how will AI affect public sector jobs – will they change, disappear, will new jobs be created? How fast will these job changes occur? And more importantly - what kind of workforce planning does introduction of AI in government require? *Artificial Intelligence* * and inclusion*One of the great promises of artificial intelligence (AI) is its objectiveness allowing making decisions and predictions free from gender, age, racial and other prejudices. But the recent years has shown that AI-powered algorithms adopt and reinforce social stereotypes and thus creating biases in inclusiveness of the Public Sector IT solutions. How does AI produce biases, what are the consequences? How to recognize biases in AI, remove them and how to avoid them at all? Is there a need for new laws and regulations to make AI and machine learning technologies inclusive? What is the potential of AI in achieving a wider social inclusion? *Artificial Intelligence* * and cybersecurity*One of the most critical issue in Public Sector IT is cybersecurity. AI will bring in new dimensions to fight against possible arms cased by security limitations and also develop the domain of solutions for security. This session will explore questions such as: How AI is used by governments in security today and what are its future uses for dealing with cybersecurity threats? What are the possible drawbacks of using AI in cybersecurity? What are the potential threats from the use of AI in cyberattacks and how to prevent and mitigate them? *Artificial Intelligence * *in healthcare - state of field, future uses, unintended consequences* mobileHealth has always one of the fastest growing area in the Public Sector IT domain. Yet we are not very sure how AI will influence these developments, especially when IoT has real time intelligence. This session aims to explore answers to questions similar to: What is the current scale of AI adoption in public healthcare? What efficiencies does the use of AI produce in healthcare? What are the specific barriers to AI adoption in public healthcare? What are the unintended consequences of AI use in healthcare? How to manage them? We are looking for experts and solution providers who can present ideas and working examples related to the proposed topic. We are also open for new proposals of panels or special sessions in your area of expertise. If interested, please send an email to me or conf(a)m4life.org with a brief on your potential contribution to this exciting topic in mobileGov and current advances in the public sector IT. ICYMI: Publication of two new reports from Data & Society's Media Manipulation initiative + livestream discussion happening today
by Monica Bulger 28 Feb '18

28 Feb '18

Dear colleagues, This past year has been a sometimes overwhelming whirl of news events and commentary about the origins of fake news and ways to counter it. ICYMI, I’m delighted to share two reports that the Data & Society Media Manipulation <https://datasociety.net/research/media-manipulation/> initiative recently published + share a reminder that “Real Talk about Fake News <https://datasociety.net/events/databite-no-107-real-talk-about-fake-news-na…>” with Nabiha Syed in conversation with Claire Wardle and Joan Donovan is livestreaming today <https://datasociety.net/events/databite-no-107-real-talk-about-fake-news-na…> at 4p.m. Eastern. The Promises, Challenges, and Futures of Media Literacy <https://datasociety.net/output/the-promises-challenges-and-futures-of-media…> , which I co-authored with Patrick Davison, aims to make sense of the complexity of media literacy as a fix or solution to fake news. We examine the research base for media literacy across four themes: what is media literacy, how can media literacy help, how can media literacy fail, and the future of media literacy. Our key findings are: (1) Media literacy places responsibility for discerning quality and accuracy of information, which works in a world that assumes either good actors or that through evaluation, quality information can be discerned. In an environment where the mechanisms for serving information are unclear, traditional markers for quality and trust have been circumvented, individual skills are insufficient. (2) Media literacy is not a panacea, it cannot be considered a standalone solution to fake news and misinformation, but one frame in a complex media & info environment. It must be considered in combination with strategies for addressing how state-sponsored disinformation efforts and tech platforms influence the information we see and how we interact with it. Dead Reckoning: Navigating Content Moderation After “Fake News,” <https://datasociety.net/output/dead-reckoning/> authored by Robyn Caplan, Lauren Hanson, and Joan Donovan clarifies current uses of the term “fake news” and analyzes four specific strategies of intervention. Key findings: (1) Moderating “fake news” well requires understanding the context of the article and the source. Currently automated technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) are not advanced enough to address this issue, which requires human-led interventions. (2) Third-party fact-checking and media literacy organizations are expected to close the gap between platforms and the public interest, but are currently under resourced to meet this challenge. Please feel free to share widely! CFP: Special Issue of Journal of Computer Mediated Communication (JCMC)
by Yao, Mike 28 Feb '18

28 Feb '18

Call for papers: Special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication Theme: What is research on computer-mediated communication today (and what should it be tomorrow)? A special issue examining the state of the field Guest editors Mike Yao, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Rich Ling, Nanyang Technological University What is computer-mediated communication (CMC)? Further, what is the nature of the social and psychological processes vis-a-vis such digitally-mediated communication? In the quarter-century since the founding of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication (emphasis added), there have been significant changes in the object of study, the theories, and methods used to examine the phenomenon. The Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication invites abstracts for a dedicated issue to consider the scope, theoretical direction, and methodological concerns in technology-mediated communication research. In the case of a special issue, we will suspend the criteria of requiring papers to have a primarily empirical focus. We invite articles that will help frame the future direction of research into digitally-mediated communication. We will first seek extended abstracts of 1000-1500 words that outline the domain of the paper, the main argument, the literature upon which the paper is built, and the proposed contribution to the specific domain and to the sub-discipline. Submit papers to mzyao(a)illinois.edu and mark the subject line with "JCMC Special issue." The submission should come with a brief biography (approx. 100-150 words) of the authors. Abstracts should be submitted by 31 March 2018. Notification of commissioned papers will be made by the end of May 2018. Full articles will be due by 1 Oct 2018, through https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jcmc. The manuscripts must conform to the formatting standards of JCMC. Visit https://www.icahdq.org/mpage/JCMCCFP for more details about this CfP.
