Algorithms and Sovereignty
by Jaromil 28 Mar '18

dear Aoir readers, due to the high quality of content on this list, I'm constantly refraining from posting about more frivolous initiatives. Then during the writing of my doctoral thesis for the past 2 years this list was also a useful resource and I've planned to post it here once done, as a good motivational goal. I'm now happy to do so, accidentally caught in the storm of yet another public debate about algorithms concerning the Cambridge Analytica case. "Algorithmic Sovereignty" is now available as creative commons from the website of my Alma Mater, Plymouth's Public University http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/11101 In this dissertation you'll find some analyses that may be applied to the case of FB/CA, but are also related to realities as that of Tor's development or SAP's company policies or PokemonGO or last but not least ARAIs used by law enforcement to preemptively profile criminals, a debate in the US which always focused on "datasets" but has barely touched the consideration of algorithms behind. In case you do, I hope you'll enjoy reading this publication. I'm grateful for the constant source of information you are providing, so here my very best wishes. -- Denis Roio a.k.a. Dear colleagues, Many of you are interested in the Internet Governance Forum. As a member of the Multistakeholder Advisory Group of the IGF, I'm writing to call your attention to a new step that should help us put together a more focused, relevant, and cohesive program, a call for issues for the IGF. This is not a call for workshop or panel proposals, this is simply a call for the most salient issues that you would like to see featured at the 2018 IGF. It is meant to give us feedback and put us more in touch with the IGF community, and to have the program structured based on the interests of the community. More information about the background to this change can be found here http://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/index.php?q=filedepot_download/6037… The call for issues itself can be found here https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/igf-2018-call-for-issues Please forward this email and/or the call for issues widely to your constituents to help us get a more comprehensive, diverse, and inclusive feedback. Suggestions for literature/researchers working critically with "terrorism informatics"
by Matti Pohjonen 28 Mar '18

28 Mar '18

Dear AoIRers, I have been an avid follower here for a few years so I thought this would be a place where I could get some suggestions from. As a part of the VOX-Pol network, we are organising a workshop looking at the uses of so-called “terrorism informatics” in detecting violent extremist content online. We are especially interested in researchers involved with methods such as data mining, data integration, social network analysis (SNA), dynamic network analysis (DNA), sentiment analysis, and image and video processing to do this. We are, however, having some challenges in finding researchers and/or literature that have focused* critically* on the aforementioned, whether in academic research or broader policy-based practice? Would any of you here have leads on good literature, researchers or organisations who have specifically focused on the critical analysis of this topic and especially on these techniques and methods? I am looking for slightly more specific suggestions than the broader topic of algorithmic bias/ethics of algorithms, which already has a great pool of literature to draw from. All help would be greatly appreciated! New Book: Sexual Harassment Online: Shaming and Silencing Women in the Digital Age
by Tania Levey 27 Mar '18

27 Mar '18

New book announcement: Tania G. Levey (2018). Sexual Harassment Online: Shaming and Silencing Women in the Digital Age (Lynne Rienner Publishers). Women who use social media are frequently subjected to blatant sexual harassment, from name calling to threats of violence. Using social media management software (SMMS) and content analysis, Sexual Harassment Online explores the harmful language of shaming and silencing women on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Tracking common misogynist terms during 2016, words such as “sl*t” and “wh*re” were used to shame women for having any sexual activity, from having multiple sex partners to simply initiating sex or ending relationships. “D*ke” was used to shame women for failing to act feminine by having short hair or wearing loose clothing. “B*tch” and “c*nt” were used to silence women for expressing opinions and behaving in ways perceived as unfriendly or uncooperative. Women were just as likely as men to call women names such as “b*tch” and “sl*t,” though less often in the context of violent threats. Use of these words peaked during presidential debates and the 2016 presidential election due to tweets directed at Hillary Clinton. Women of color, immigrant women, and women from non-Anglo-European backgrounds were frequent targets of misogynist abuse and also experienced racist and xenophobic comments. Commonly targeted celebrities included Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian, Amber Rose, and Melania Trump. Misogynist terms were also used to resist restrictive heterofeminine norms through reclamation, direct critiques, and online campaigns. This book concludes by discussing the potential of social media platforms to contribute to social change. https://www.rienner.com/title/Sexual_Harassment_Online_Shaming_and_Silencin… -- Tania G. Twitter research
by Tremayne, Diana 27 Mar '18

27 Mar '18

Hello I'm just seeking some opinions from people on the list. My research focuses on a Twitter 'chat' for educators. I'm collecting a range of data and exploring how the chat might support professional development. I will be analysing in a range of ways (content analysis, observation, SNA etc) but am interested to know if/how people have explored closer analysis of particular interactions as obviously this has implications in terms of ethics and breaches of Twitter policy. This, from Ahmed et al, (2017) considers the issue: 'Additionally, reproducing tweets but removing user IDs, or altering tweets significantly will contravene Twitter's User Development Policy which requires tweets to be published in full. However, academic researchers could argue that the policy is frequently breached and that Twitter has never taken any action due to the breaches. This is not to say that Twitter may never take action, nor that they will not take retrospective action, or that doing this is ethical.' I would be interested to know what people's views/experiences are of this. Many thanks Diana Ahmed, W., Bath, P. and Demartini, G.
