AoIR2016 experimental session- #Berlindatarace (7 October, 4-6pm)
by Ariadna Matamoros Fernández 30 Sep '16

30 Sep '16

Dear AoIR2016 attendees, We are very excited to invite you to participate in our experimental session on *Friday 7 October (4-6pm): the #Berlindatarace*. This session will take you out of the conference venue and around Berlin, exploring the city and looking to obtain the most points to win the Data Race! *What is it?* The #Berlindatarace seeks to disrupt how people share their lived experiences within academic conferences by cultivating new and interactive understandings of participant interactions, digital technologies and places. For the Data Race, this new engagement with AoIR takes the form of a data scavenger hunt that not only takes participants to iconic and hidden places around Berlin, but at the same time facilitates teamwork and fosters greater networking collaborations amongst the AoIR community. *How does it work?* The Data Race has two components: the experimental session itself (4-6pm, 7 October), and a Twitter-only aspect over the first two days of the conference (6-7 October). All conference attendees will be allocated to teams at the start of the conference by the race organisers (you are free to participate or not to, though!); these details will be revealed at the conference, and you will be in the same team for both components of the race. *Twitter event*: Follow our *@berlindatarace *account to find out about social media-specific missions and opportunities to give your team extra points between 6-7 October. *Experimental session-specific event*: only open on 7 October, 4-6pm, focused on the area around the conference venue. Using the GooseChase app, teams will attempt to complete as many #Berlindatarace missions as possible during the session (4pm-6pm on Friday 7 October). The missions feature a mix of Berlin’s history, architecture, art, and pop culture, as well as content that is AoIR specific! Each mission requires participants to either submit a short answer, check in and provide geolocation info, or take and upload a photo or video. The more difficult the mission, the higher the point value. The #Berlindatarace session itself will finish at *the lounge at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG)* (see http://aoir.org/aoir2016/conference-venue/) Each team is required to check in by 6pm at the lounge. Teams can then mingle ahead of the reception at 7pm (or have time to get ready, as they wish!). The team with the most accumulated points (including social media points from the first two days of the conference) wins the #Berlindatarace. *The winners will be announced at the AoIR AGM: 4pm, 8 October.* If you are interested in participating, or just want to know more about the event, we have posted information on our website ( https://berlin-data-race.github.io/ <https://berlin-data-race.github.io/>), and follow us on Twitter (@berlindatarace)! Thank you and we look forward to seeing you in Berlin! ‪Ariadna Matamoros Fernández, Katherina Drinkuth, Rachel Hews, Tim Highfield, Felix Münch *Ariadna Matamoros Fernández PhD candidate | QUT Digital Media Research Centre * Email: ariadna.matamorosfernandez(a)qut.edu.au t: +61(0)466310915 | Twitter: @andairamf Creative Industries Faculty | Queensland University of Technology

CFP - Researching Internet Content
by Henriette Roued-Cunliffe 30 Sep '16

30 Sep '16

CFP for a themed issue of NTIK: Researching Internet Content http://www.ntik.dk/Call%20for%20papers%20-%20HRC.pdf The Internet has recently celebrated it’s 25th anniversary and as Gartner’s hype cycle on emerging technology shows the Internet has already give rise to new, emerging as well as established technologies, platforms, ways of interacting and creating content. In the humanities we traditionally study cultural content in it’s many different shapes and forms from letters and literature, to paintings and pottery. However, 25 years with the Internet has thoroughly affected the amount, shape, creation of and way we interact with the cultural content found on the Internet. This in turn has influenced the theories as well as the methods with which we can study cultural content. The field of Digital Humanities has built itself around the idea of using digital methods to study more traditional material such as handwritten or analogue documents. However, in recent years there has been a growing focus on the study of born-digital material, using both newly developed digital methods as well as more traditional methods. This issue will include research papers that deal with methods, possibilities, challenges and in particular ethical considerations in relation to humanities research into Internet content. This includes, but is not limited to the study of: fanwork and it’s creators DIY culture and how-tos amateur forums social networks blogs and bloggers Researchers from any discipline and at any level are invited to submit a 200-word abstracts on this topic by 15 October 2016 to the issue editors, Henriette Roued-Cunliffe (roued(a)hum.ku.dk<mailto:roued@hum.ku.dk>) and Thessa Jensen (thessa(a)hum.aau.dk<mailto:thessa@hum.aau.dk>) The editorial team will review all abstracts, and authors of selected abstracts will be invited to submit full papers by 1 February 2017. Important dates: 15 October 2016: deadline for abstracts 1 February 2017: deadline for full paper

Hello, I am trying to find the paper that was presented in Netherlands: Krishnamurthy, S. (2002), "The multidimensionality of blog conversations: the virtual enactment of September 11", paper presented at Internet Research 3.0, Maastricht, October. Iam doing a research of Finnish knitblogs and I think there might be some information that could be useful to my study. So, I would be very grateful, if it is possible to someone sent me a copy of the paper or help me to find it? Sincerely, Katja Vilhunen (Doctoral Candidate at the University of Eastern Finland) ?

Geomedia 2017 conference 2nd call
by Raul Ferrer Conill 29 Sep '16

29 Sep '16

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS AND PANELS Submission is now open Geomedia 2017: Spaces of the In-Between Karlstad, Sweden, 9-12 May 2017 Welcome to the 2nd international Geomedia conference! The term geomedia captures the fundamental role of media in organizing and giving meaning to processes and activities in space. It also refers to the geographical qualities of media, for example flows of digital signals between particular places and the infrastructure carrying those flows. The rapid expansion of mobile media, location-based services, geographical information systems and increasingly complex patterns of surveillance/interveillance has amplified the need for critical studies and theorizations of geomedia. The 2nd Geomedia Conference welcomes contributions (full sessions/panels as well as individual papers) that analyze and problematize the relations between the any and all communication media and various forms of spatial creativity, performance and production across material, cultural, social and political dimensions. Geomedia 2017 provides a genuinely interdisciplinary arena for research carried out at the crossroads of geography, media and film studies. It also builds bridges to such fields as urban studies, rural studies, regional planning, cultural studies and tourism studies. Keynote speakers: Christian Licoppe Télécom ParisTech, France Scott McQuire University of Melbourne, Australia Gillian Rose The Open University, UK Plenary panel Geographies of News: Julie Firmstone University of Leeds, UK Nikki Usher George Washington University, USA Philip Napoli Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA Lars Nyre University of Bergen, Norway Henrik Örnebring (chair) Karlstad University, Sweden Film screenings and directors: Reflections Sara Broos, Sweden (2016) I Am Dublin David Aronowitsch, Ahmed Abdullahi, Anna Persson and Sharmarke Binyusuf, Sweden (2015) Art installation: Fragmentarium Jacek Smolicki, Sweden Abstract submissions: Geomedia 2017 welcomes proposals for individual papers as well as thematic panels in English through the conference website: <http://www.geomedia.se> www.geomedia.se Individual paper proposals: The author submits an abstract of 200-250 words. Accepted papers are grouped by the organizers into sessions of 5 papers according to thematic area. Thematic panel proposals: The chair of the panel submits a proposal consisting of 4-5 individual paper abstracts (200-250 words) along with a general panel presentation of 200-250 words. Suggested themes include, but are not limited to: - Art and event spaces - Cinematic geographies - Cosmopolitanism - Everyday communication geographies - Epistemologies and methodologies of geomedia - Geographies of media and culture industries - Geographies of news - Historical perspectives of geomedia - Lifestyle and tourism mobilities - Locative and spatial media - Material geographies of media - Media ecologies - Mediatization and space - Migration and media - Mobility and governance - Policy mobilities and power - Power geometries and mobility capital - Surveillance and spatial control - Urban and rural media spaces Conference timeline September 26th 2016: Submission system opens December 9th 2016: Deadline for thematic panel and individual paper proposals January 23rd 2017: Notes of acceptance and registration opens February 28th 2017: Early Bird pricing ends March 20th 2017: Last day of registration Conference website: Information about registration, conference program, venue, social events and practical arrangements will be posted continuously at the conference website: <http://www.geomedia.se> www.geomedia.se Contact: You can reach us at <mailto:info@geomedia.se> info(a)geomedia.se Organizers and venue: Geomedia 2017 is hosted by the Geomedia Research Group at the Department of Geography, Media and Communication, Karlstad University, Sweden. Conference Director: Linda Ryan Bengtsson Conference Coordinator: Lena Grip Director of the Geomedia Research Group: André Jansson Conference theme The special theme of Geomedia 2017 is Spaces of the In-Between. The theme will be addressed through invited keynote talks, a plenary panel, film screenings and artistic installations. Participants are also encouraged to submit proposals for paper sessions addressing the conference theme. Spaces of the In-Between sheds light on how media are, and have been, part of producing spaces and places that fall in-between or resist dominant categorizations. Such spaces include, firstly, more or less fluid media spaces that bridge or problematize the divisions of, for example, work and leisure, home and away, production and consumption. Secondly, spaces of the in-between are produced through various forms of mobility, related to for instance commuting or migration, that are shaped by and giving shape to particular media forms. Finally, the conference theme highlights mediations of concrete places that can be understood as neither/nor. Such places can be found on the margins of society or fall in-between dichotomized geo-social constructs like urban vs. rural, front-stage vs. back-stage, etc. Ultimately, the conference theme opens up for critical discussions of what forms of power and domination are expressed through the mediated/mediatized production of various in-between spaces.

CFP - special issue of Qualitative Inquiry on methods/newmedia/intimacies
by Katherine Anne Blackburn Harrison 29 Sep '16

29 Sep '16

Dear all, Please find below a call for abstracts for a special issue of Qualitative Inquiry. The special issue is provisionally titled "Researching Intimacies and New Media: Methodological Opportunities and Challenges" and the deadline for 500 word abstracts is 1 December. I'm happy to talk more about it with anyone who might be interested in contributing...and I'd be very grateful if you would share this with your wider networks. Many thanks and best wishes Katherine Katherine Harrison, PhD Department of Media, Cognition and Communication University of Copenhagen Karen Blixens Vej 4 DK-2300 Copenhagen S Denmark email: tjx856(a)hum.ku.dk office: 14.3.05 tel: +45 35 33 42 62 ”what is algorithm but ideology in executable form?” (Nakamura 2013) ----------------------------------------------- We hereby invite contributions to a special issue of Qualitative Inquiry to be published 2018, provisionally titled: RESEARCHING INTIMACIES AND NEW MEDIA: METHODOLOGICAL OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES Guest Editors: Katherine Harrison (University of Copenhagen, Denmark & Lund University, Sweden) & Maria Bee Christensen-Strynø (Roskilde University, Denmark) Deadline for submission: 1 December 2016 New media are increasingly intersecting and intertwined with our daily lives, bodily and intimate practices, and relationships. This special issue will present contributions from researchers who are investigating practices of intimacy mediated either wholly or in part through new media. In particular, it will focus on the methodological issues involved in conducting qualitative research in this flourishing field. A number of volumes published in the last decade have variously covered affect and methodology (e.g. Fraser and Puwar 2008; Pink 2009; Richardson 2005; Stage and Timm 2015), affect and new media (e.g. Chambers 2013; Garde-Hansen and Gorton 2013; Hillis at al 2015; Karatzogianni and Kuntsman 2012; McGlotten 2013; Paasonen 2011; Payne 2014; van Dijck 2013), or online methodologies (e.g. Hine 2000; Kozinets 2012; Markham and Baym 2009). This special issue builds on this existing body of scholarship and develops it further by narrowing the focus to methodological issues of research conducted on/with/through new media and specifically concerned with practices of intimacy. This special issue will zoom in on questions of method and methodology as they are experienced by researchers working at the cutting-edge of scholarship on intimacies and new media. It will share knowledge and experiences from the field, as well as proposing innovative methodological solutions and ideas on how to enter, survive and exit these highly charged fieldsites. Both personal experiences and reflections on current policies, procedures and paradigms will be welcomed. Researching intimacies encompasses a wide variety of practices and relationships, including but not limited to kinship, sexual encounters, body and gender, dis/abilities, migration, friendship, birth and death, romantic relationships, non-monogamies, dating or community formation. Each of these finds different forms in its mediatization. Simultaneously “new media” comprises a variety of digital platforms that offer distinctive ways to share, connect and communicate; differences in hardware and software intersect with situated sociocultural norms about technology use. The combination of intimate practices and new media thus poses challenges to existing methodological paradigms due to the limitations/affordances of the medium intersecting with continuously shifting practices of intimacy. This special issue will present a range of intimate practices as well as a selection of digital sites and apps. In so doing, a variety of different methodological issues will be highlighted and discussed. Suggestions for topics that contributors may wish to engage with include, but are not limited to: - Logistical and technical difficulties in collecting ephemeral or unstable personal data - Intimacy and loneliness of the researcher - Commercialization of online intimacies - The blurring of personal/professional lines of conduct as a researcher - The borderline between “lurking”, voyeurism and participation - Public intimacies in private spaces – accessing and exiting personal spaces as fieldsites - Technical glitches in online intimacies - The illusion of online anonymity or distance - Negotiating national differences in ethical guidelines for online collection of ”intimate” data - Tracking intimacies over time, space and media - Capturing and processing vast amounts of intimate data - Finding participants when the topic provokes shame, anger, or embarrassment - How multiple understandings of “intimacy” affect methodology - Sudden changes to fieldsites in response to public outcry/moral outrage - Adapting old methods to new and slippery fieldsites - Legal frameworks as intimate practices move between screen and materiality - Inclusion/exclusion mechanisms and accessibility We welcome papers from a wide range of disciplines. The editors welcome expressions of interest and are happy to discuss proposals for contributions. Please send your abstract to: tjx856(a)hum.ku.dk AND mariabee(a)ruc.dk . Abstracts should be maximum 500 words long and written in English. Please include your name, title, and affiliation. Deadline for submission of abstracts: 1 December 2016 If accepted, final versions of papers should follow the Qualitative Inquiry submission guidelines which can be viewed here: https://uk.sagepub.com/en-gb/eur/qualitative-inquiry/journal200797#submissi… Please note that the Editors of the journal reserve the right to reject special issues and/or individual articles at any point in the review process.

The News & Media Research Centre at the University of Canberra is delighted to announce the publication of ‘Decoding Publics: A Review of Digital Media Analytics Tools’ by Mathieu O’Neil and Daniel Kelley. >From the Introduction: ‘We live in the age of what Castells calls “mass self-communication”. As a result ever-more data about the online communications of people and organisations are being produced, as well as about the spread and impact of these communications. Another consequence is that new software tools are regularly announced as the “next big thing” in online analytics. This report is not meant as the definitive word on the subject, or as a complete snapshot of the state of play. We simply aim to provide an entry-point for those who are considering engaging with online data analytics. [...] The report contains brief reviews of fifteen social media software analytics tools assessed using the same criteria, to evaluate the potential of these tools for teaching and training purposes.’ Tools reviewed include: Discovertext, Netlytic, Twitonomy (text analytics) NodeXL, Netlytic (social networks analytics) Issue Crawler, VOSON, Webometrics Analyst (hyperlink analytics) Google Analytics, Hootsuite, SocialMediaMineR (action analytics) Countly, Mixpanel (mobile analytics) Followerwonk, Tweepsmap (location analytics) The report can be downloaded for free here: http://www.canberra.edu.au/research/faculty-research-centres/nmrc/publicati…
