The 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-50) Minitrack: Values, Power, and Politics in Digital Infrastructures http://www.hicss.org/#!values-power-and-politics-in-digital-i/c19uj This minitrack will explore the themes of values, power, and politics in relation to the infrastructures that support digital data, documents, and interactions. By considering how infrastructures – the underlying material properties, policy decisions, and mechanisms of interoperability that support digital platforms – are designed, maintained, and dismantled, the work presented in this mini-track will contribute to debates about sociotechnical aspects of digital and social media, with a focus on data, knowledge production, and information access. This session will focus on research that employs techniques such as infrastructural inversion, trace ethnography or design research (among other methods) to explore factors that influence the development of infrastructures and their use in practice. We welcome papers considering topics such as (but not limited to): * Politics and ethics in digital platforms and infrastructures * Values of stakeholders in digital infrastructures * Materiality of values, power, or politics in digital infrastructures * Tensions between commercial infrastructures and the needs of communities of practice * Maintenance, repair, deletion, decay of digital and social media infrastructures * Resistance, adoption and adaptation of digital infrastructures * Alternative perspectives on what comprises infrastructures Deadline: June 15 Please see the HICSS website for submission details: http://www.hicss.org/#!author-instructions/c1dsb Minitrack Co-Chairs: Katie Shilton University of Maryland, College Park kshilton(a)umd.edu<mailto:kshilton@umd.edu> Jaime Snyder University of Washington, Seattle jas1208(a)uw.edu<mailto:jas1208@uw.edu> Matthew J. Fear and Loathing on the Social Campaign Trail
by Stuart Shulman 19 Mar '16

19 Mar '16

In 2012, I started doing some research on political fear detection in social data. Given recent events, I feel this is a ripe area to revisit. I am looking for a few collaborators interested in carrying this forward in the context of Trump. I am also looking for new graduate student coders (text annotators) to label Tweets. The pay is $13 and it comes with free access to DiscoverText. Please send me a resume if you want to be a paid coder or potentially a collaborator. New Book Announcement
by DAL JIN 19 Mar '16

19 Mar '16

Please share with other AOIR members: New Korean Wave: Transnational Cultural Power in the Age of Social Media By Dal Yong Jin (Simon Fraser University) University of Illinois Press, 2016 http://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/catalog/86ftm7bg9780252039973.html The 2012 smash “Gangnam Style” by the Seoul-born rapper Psy capped the triumph of Hallyu, the Korean Wave of music, film, and other cultural forms that have become a worldwide sensation. Dal Yong Jin analyzes the social and technological trends that transformed Hallyu from a mostly regional interest aimed at families into a global powerhouse geared toward tech-crazy youth. Blending analysis with insights from fans and industry insiders, Jin shows how Hallyu exploited a media landscape and dramatically changed with the 2008 emergence of smartphones and social media, designating this new Korean Wave as Hallyu 2.0. Hands-on government support, meanwhile, focused on creative industries as a significant part of the economy and turned intellectual property rights into a significant revenue source. Jin also delves into less-studied forms like animation and online games, the significance of social meaning in the development of local Korean popular culture, and the political economy of Korean popular culture and digital technologies in a global context. A first-of-its-kind treatment, New Korean Wave maps how a convergence of technology, leadership, and avid fandom unleashed a cultural tsunami. A fascinating story of how Korean cultural industry grew from being a relatively overlooked sector to becoming a global success story, analyzing the social and technological mechanism that enabled this sector's growth and its relations with the state. This book is an outstanding contribution to the scholarship on the New Korean Wave.--Nissim Otmazgin In recent years, the Korean wave, Hallyu, has emerged as a major Asian presence on the media globe but its political economy has largely been ignored. Dal Yong Jin's excellent study fills this gap in international scholarship: highly recommended.--Daya Thussu Much has been written in recent years about the Korean Wave, or Hallyu. But what has often been missing is the capacity to situate this wave in the wider context of political economy, cultural policy, and global media flows. Dal Yong Jin's book marks an admirable survey of the phenomenon from this critical institutional perspective, and will become the defining text for understanding the political economy of the New Korean Wave.--Terry Flew Dal Yong Jin is Associate Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, Canada (djin(a)sfu.ca)

WEBCAST TODAY: INET Kathmandu - Learning Lessons from Nepal – Embracing ICTs for Disaster Management
by Joly MacFie 18 Mar '16

18 Mar '16

ISOC Nepal has done superhuman work in reconnecting the country after last year's major earthquake. Now they continue that work by hosting this INET to share their experience. joly posted: "Today, Friday March 18 2016 the Internet Society's Nepal Chapter is hosting INET Kathmandu with the theme "Learning Lessons from Nepal - Embracing ICTs for Disaster Management". Natural disasters not only cause dramatic loss of human lives and property but also have a lasting impact on the economy which sometimes takes several years to recover from. In April 2015, an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude in Nepal left nearly 9,000 people dead and destroyed over half a million homes as well infrastructure. This massive destruction has also had an impact on Nepal’s bid to advance from the status of a least developed country to a developing country by 2022. During such times, disaster management efforts function on several levels, including first responders, humanitarian relief services and on-time assistance to affected communities. At all levels, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play a significant role in getting the right information to the right people at the right time. This is often critical in order to save lives and reduce losses. Availability of a robust information management system supported by ICTs is critical to support the constant flow of vital information required for disaster management activities. INET Kathmandu aims to bring together International agencies and local stakeholders involved in emergency planning, emergency services, disaster management and related work, to: Learn from the 2015 Earthquake in Nepal; Share regional developments, experiences and information; Discuss emerging paradigms in disaster risk reduction; Propose future mechanisms, critical infrastructure and dependencies for disaster management in the short and long term horizons. *The event is being webcast live on the Internet Society Livestream Channel <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/inetktmd>.* *View on Livestream*: https://livestream.com/internetsociety/inetktmd *Agenda*: http://www.internetsociety.org/inet-kathmandu/sessions *Twitter*: https://twitter.com/hashtag/INETKTM Comment <http://isoc-ny.org/p2/8365#respond> See all comments <http://isoc-ny.org/p2/8365#comments> *Permalink* http://isoc-ny.org/p2/8365 -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Joly MacFie 218 565 9365 Skype:punkcast -------------------------------------------------------------- -

LITERATURE REQUEST/older adults and mCare solutions
by Alja Skrt 18 Mar '16

18 Mar '16

Dear all, We are a research team working on a project about acceptance factors of assistive technologies/services on smartphones that are designed to facilitate older adults’ (55 and older) active and independent living at home (by addressing their needs as well as the needs of their informal/formal carers). In the literature survey we have come across a couple of relevant papers that directly (e.g., Plaza et al. 2011, Peek et al. 2014, Ma et al. 2015, Doughty and Williams 2016) or (more) indirectly (e.g., Hanson et al. 2013, Gao et al. 2015, Foong 2016, Brophy et al. 2015, Vroman et al. 2014, Damant et al. 2016) address this topic. Because we would like to have a comprehensive overview of the field, we would be happy to learn about any other (published or unpublished) papers or marketing/scientific reports concerning older adults and their adoption of ATs services on smartphones. We are specifically interested in conceptual and empirical research that focuses on mCare solutions which are not related only to mHealth apps. Thanks! Best, Alja, Andraz, Vesna University of Ljubljana Faculty of Social Sciences Department of Social Informatics and Methodology www: http://www.fdv.uni-lj.si
