Dear colleagues, apologies for x-posting, and please distribute widely: Call for papers: Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe, Special collection of Social Media + Society, edited by Koen Leurs and Kevin Smets While it is increasingly observable that forced migration and digital connectivity are intertwined, there is a need for more in-depth, critical research into this topic, especially in the context of Europe. With this special collection of Social Media + Society, a high standing, peer reviewed, open-access journal published by Sage, we seek to bring together cutting-edge research on forced migration in(to) Europe and the way in which digital technologies and digital connectivity and in particular social media play a role in the lives of forced migrants. The collection aims not only to present empirical evidence for discussions about forced migration and digital connectivity, but also to offer new theoretical insights on the issue. Approaching forced migration as a complex societal, political and cultural phenomenon, we seek to consider different aspects of digital connectivity, such as the use of social media by migrants, activists and trolls, issues of affectivity, representation, materiality, mobility, solidarity, political economy and the communication industry, as well questions related to gender, race, sexuality, nation, class, geography and religion; identity; diaspora; media literacy; policy; legislation and human rights. The label forced migrants includes here asylum seekers, refugees, forced migrants, stranded migrants, left-behind children and child migrants as well internally displaced populations amongst others. We welcome scholars from the (digital) humanities and (computational) social sciences. Theoretical perspectives may include but are not limited to communication, media and cultural studies, HCI, postcolonial, feminist, critical race and intersectional approaches, critical ICT4D, and political economy. Empirical perspectives may include but are not limited to (virtual) ethnography, big data, digital methods, fieldwork, action-research, creative methods, mixed-methods, and survey-research. The special collection is developed in tandem with two events: 1) the symposium "Connected migrants: encapsulation or cosmopolitanism?" The symposium is financed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. 2) two panels on "Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe", to be submitted to the Association of Internet Research annual conference, to be held in Berlin, Germany from 5-8 October, 2016. Key dates -15 April 2016: 1-page abstract + 150 word bio -May 2016: invitations for full papers after selection by guest editors -7 December 2016: first version of full papers (8000 words all inclusive) -Late 2017: anticipated publication date Rationale Daily, Europeans witness Syrian asylum seekers arriving on the beaches of Greek and Southern-Italian islands. TV news footage shows how freshly arrived migrants use smartphones to take selfies or use Skype to happily announce their safe arrival on European soil to loved ones elsewhere. In response, prejudicial discourses about migrants have centered on smartphones; for example, anti-immigrant politicians and various social media memes frame refugees who own 'luxury' smartphones as less deserving of asylum. Forced migrants, who are digitally connected, embody Europe's Janus-faced character in an age when advanced technologies are celebrated for increasing communication speed and economic prosperity. As a result of different conflicts worldwide, forced migration has become a major challenge for Europe. The enormous death toll of migrants at Europe's borders, the reintroduction of border controls within the Schengen Area, and the violence and hostility towards refugees and asylum seekers in several European countries published across various social media platforms all attest to the way in which the current influx of forced migrants is overturning European society and political structures. At the same time mainstream media have devoted significant attention to the situation of refugees along their migration routes in(to) Europe. Interestingly, these instances often included digital technologies as central anchoring points in the lives of refugees. Detailed reports were made of refugees using smartphones, keeping in touch with their relatives, or documenting their journey through social media. Other accounts, albeit less frequently, focused on the ways in which governments seek to deal with forced migration via digital technologies, for instance by making use of GPS tracking in smartphones, or by setting up online deterrence campaigns to discourage refugees to migrant to specific countries. About the guest-editors Koen Leurs is Assistant Professor in Gender and Postcolonial studies at the Graduate Gender Program, Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He obtained his PhD in 2012. He is a feminist internet researcher interested in multiculturalism, race, migration, diaspora and youth culture using mixed methods and ethnography. He has just completed a 2 year EU funded Marie Curie research project titled Urban Politics of London Youth Analyzed Digitally, at the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK. From February 2016 onwards he will work on a 3-year Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research funded research project 'Young connected migrants. Regards, Matt ***Call for Participation*** Archives Unleashed 2.0: Web Archive Datahon Library of Congress, Washington DC 14 – 15 June 2016 Travel grants available for US-based graduate students; other travel funding may be available Applications due 15 March 2016 **This event is a follow-up to the Archives Unleashed datathon held in March at the University of Toronto Library. With generous funding from the National Science Foundation and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (Canada), we’ve been able to extend the datathon program, and are excited to bring this program to the Library of Congress.** The World Wide Web has a profound impact on how we research and understand the past. The sheer amount of cultural information that is generated and, crucially, preserved every day in electronic form, presents exciting new opportunities for researchers. Much of this information is captured within web archives. Web archives often contain hundreds of billions of web pages, ranging from individual homepages and social media posts, to institutional websites. These archives offer tremendous potential for social scientists and humanists, and the questions research may pose stretch across a multitude of fields. Scholars broaching topics dating back to the mid-1990s will find their projects enhanced by web data. Moreover, scholars hoping to study the evolution of cultural and societal phenomena will find a treasure trove of data in web archives. In short, web archives offer the ability to reconstruct large-scale traces of the relatively recent past. While there has been considerable discussion about web archive tools and datasets, few forums or mechanisms for coordinated, mutually informing development efforts have been created. This hackathon presents an opportunity to collaboratively unleash our web collections, exploring cutting-edge research tools while fostering a broad-based consensus on future directions in web archive analysis. This hackathon will bring together a small group of 20-30 participants to collaboratively develop new open-source tools and approaches to hackathon, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. Researchers should be comfortable with command line interactions, and knowledge of a scripting language such as Python strongly desired. By bringing together a group of like-minded scholars and programmers, we hope to begin building unified analytic production effort and to continue coalescing this nascent research community. At this event, we hope to converge on a shared vision of future directions in the use of web archives for inquiry in the humanities and social sciences in order to build a community of practice around various web archive analytics platforms and tools. Thanks to the generous support of the National Science Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the University of Waterloo’s Department of History, the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science and the University of Waterloo, and the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University, we will cover all meals and refreshments for attendees. We are also providing sample datasets for people to work on during the hackathon, or they are happy to use their own. All papers will undergo the same review process and be published in the same way: all accepted submissions in this category will be included in the conference proceedings and we intend to publish through the ACM Digital Library. Authors are invited to submit high-quality original work to advance the field. Papers will be subject to blind peer reviewing and all identifying information about authors needs to be removed from the submitted manuscripts. REVIEW PROCESS: All PAPERS We have selected a program committee of experts in human-computer interaction and game research to lead the formal review process. Once your paper is submitted as a blind manuscript in the correct format, our program committee and external reviewers will provide at least 3 high quality reviews (at least two from our PC members). The Associate Chair (AC) will contribute their own opinion about the paper and summarize the individual reviews, meta-reviewing the paper and providing advice to the authors regarding the rebuttal. A rebuttal is a chance to clarify any misconceptions that the reviewers might have about the paper. This is an opportunity for authors to rebut factual error in reviews or to answer questions asked by reviewers. Rebuttals are required to be written in a very short timeframe after the reviews are sent out. CHI PLAY rebuttals are 2500 characters in length. The PC and conference chairs will review and discuss all submitted rebuttals. The papers chairs will then deliberate in close communication with the committee members about the acceptance of papers. Authors will then be recommended to make certain changes before the camera-ready submission and acceptance might be tentative until those changes are included. I want to ground discussions of privacy in actual practices by interviewing people from all walks of life who use encryption. Lit on nonprofit & advocacy orgs. online privacy policies?

To my knowledge there isn't much lit on the subject, but I am glad somebody will be working on it as I have done some preliminary work and found copious amount of privacy-compromising 'trackers' on the websites of nonprofit and advocacy groups. There is also a feeling of urgency to systematically account for multimodal aspects of digital environments, particularly as they increasingly focus on multimodal content and foster intertextuality and interactivity. This relatively new scholarly interest brings with it a number of methodological considerations as well as questions related to the application and interpretation of semiotic resources beyond language in digital contexts. This year's conference ist jointly hosted by the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society and the Hans-Bredow-Institut for Media Research. AoIR 2016 will emphasize the relevance of the Internet in today’s culture and politics. The conference theme addresses the significance of the codes and rules that frame the Internet, as well as their playful circumvention, from technical protocols and popular platforms to the emerging, established, and contested conventions of online communities. Who are the actors both in practices of rule-making and rule-breaking, what are their motivations and resources, and how can their power relations and communicative figurations be described? How does the Internet influence the proliferation of the values that its platforms, services and infrastructures embody, and what spaces of creative resistance persist? How do various forms of technical, social, and cultural hacking subvert these orders? The committee calls for proposals for papers, panels, workshops, roundtables, and other events that engage with the conference theme or the field more generally. Topics could include (but are not limited to): - coordination and rule-making online - media, culture and identity - (h)activism and social justice - critical approaches to algorithms, platform studies - codes and practices of internet culture - connected devices and the internet of things - big data and predictive analytics - techno-social interfaces - digital labor, crowdsourcing and co-creation - internet governance and regulation - (global) social media - communication, participation and polarization online - philosophy of information and knowledge We particularly invite submissions that engage with or challenge the conference theme in new and exciting ways, are innovative, or present a novel approach to the topic. We encourage “experimental sessions” that extend research in unusual directions (via method, topic or presentation structure). We also welcome submissions on topics that address social, cultural, political, legal, aesthetic, economic, and/or philosophical aspects of the internet beyond the conference theme. The committee extends a special invitation to students, researchers, and practitioners who have previously not participated in an Internet Research event to submit proposals. *PROPOSALS* We seek proposals for several different kinds of contributions to encompass the breadth of relevant research. We welcome proposals for traditional academic conference PAPERS, organized PANELS, ROUNDTABLES, FISHBOWLS, EXPERIMENTAL SESSIONS, and PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS. We invite proposals that will focus on discussion and interaction among conference delegates. Papers can present any kind of research or analysis, but should be written so that the importance of the work can be understood by reviewers working in different disciplines or using different approaches. Cross- or trans-disciplinary work is especially encouraged. Paper submissions should be approximately 1200 words long, including references. Please note that paper submissions must adhere to AoIR’s pre-formatted template and should give an indication as to the consistency, rigor and relevance of the work. (More information on submission formats and templates available here: aoir.org/aoir2016/submissions) Presentations at the conference are generally intended to be dynamic, and provide a broad overview of the scholarship being engaged, with the hope of generating useful conversation. Preconstituted panels: Panels should present a coherent group of papers on a single theme. Panel proposals should include 1200-word abstracts as above for each of the constituent papers, as well as a brief statement articulating the papers’ relationship to each other. It is recommended that panels include four papers, although submissions of three to five papers will also be considered. The organizer is responsible for compiling the proposal into a single document for submission. Preconference workshops: Workshops may be either half or full-day events that occur on the first day of the conference and focus on a particular topic. They may be a workshop of some kind (e.g., a publishing workshop), a methodological “bootcamp” (e.g., on ethnography or statistical analysis), an exploration of a theoretical tradition or topical area (e.g., symbolic interaction, political economy, or GIS) or anything else that may be of interest to conference delegates. Proposals for workshops should explain for a general scholarly audience the goals of the workshop, the way it will operate, and an indication of potential audience or attendees who may be interested in attending (such as “early career scholars” or “researchers using statistical analysis”). Proposals for workshops should be approximately 600-800 words in length, and should name the workshop facilitators. Roundtable Sessions: Roundtables encourage discussion and interaction among delegates. They may involve brief introductory presentations by organizers. Proposals should include details on the theme or topic of discussion and its relevance, along with names of the organizers/initial participants. Roundtables can include no more than 5 initial participants. Roundtable submissions should be between 250-300 words long (to be included as the “abstract” in the submissions process–no separate document need be uploaded). Open Fishbowls: Fishbowl sessions should cover broad topics of interest to a wide segment of the AoIR community, and create a space for dialogue across different types of research. Submitted proposals should include a brief statement as to the core idea or theme for the fishbowl, emphasizing its relation to conference themes or relevance to the IR community. Fishbowls can include no more than 5 initial participants (named fish). Experimental Sessions: Experimental sessions are those that, while of interest to members or engaging with conference themes, meaningfully “push the envelope” beyond more traditional forms of conference engagement and participation and as such do not fit into any of the other proposal formats. Examples may include Ignite or pecha-kucha presentations, demonstrations, performances, installations, short-form workshops, unsessions, maker or code-based projects, or interactive experiences. Proposals for experimental sessions should describe for a general scholarly audience the goal or idea of the session and how it will operate, and discuss why the proposed format will be of interest to AoIR delegates. Organizers of experimental sessions will be responsible for supplying any necessary equipment beyond that usually provided for conference presentations, and should be prepared to coordinate closely with the conference committee as necessary to enable a successful presentation of the alternative format. To encourage this kind of submission, we are again offering the “Halavais Prize for Weirdness” this year for the most interesting and successful submission in a non-traditional format. Doctoral Colloquium: The Association of Internet Researchers believes that its emerging researchers are the best in its disparate constituent fields. In keeping with its commitment to students’ scholarship, we continue the tradition of bringing emerging and established scholars together through the AoIR 2016 Doctoral Colloquium. The colloquium offers PhD students working in internet research or a related field a special, day-long forum, to be convened on 5 October 2016. For many years, this pre-conference event has provided students with the opportunity to a concentrated amount of time with senior scholars to share research projects, address methodological and theoretical challenges, and exchange informal advice on juggling the multiple pressures associated with job searching, publishing, and finishing the dissertation Interested students should prepare a) a two-page summary of your research. This should provide a context for the research, describe the methods being used, the progress to date, and primary concerns and issues; and b) A brief statement indicating why you want to participate in this doctoral colloquium and what you hope to get out of it. These are due on or before 15 June 2016. The number of fee waivers and travel stipends will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Call for help - scraping 'historic' geotagged social media data

Dear All, It would be a fantastic help if any of you might be able to assist with this issue. I am looking into trying to scrape 'historic' geotagged social media data. Specifically, I want to pull in as much publicly available geotagged social media data from within Ferguson (USA) between August and December, 2014. I've been in contact with Geofeedia who have informed me that significant events are 'recorded,' and the information is archived and available..for subscribers. However I'm not really in the position to be able to afford the annual subscription. Does anyone have any potential leads or ideas as to how I might be able to access such information? Any help with this would be hugely appreciated. Thank you in advance. Reminder: Call for Two Volumes of Emerald Studies in Media and Communication on Latin America VOLUME 12: ICTs and the Politics of Inclusion in Latin America VOLUME 13: Brazil: Media from the Country of the Future Deadline: March 15, 2016 Emerald Studies in Media and Communication is delighted to announce the call for 2016. We are inviting submission of original, unpublished papers for two volumes to be published on Latin America with guest editors from Argentina and Brazil. Thanks to a short publication cycle, authors will see their work in print within 12 months of submission by the deadline. Submissions should be 6,000-12,000 words in length inclusive of abstract, references, and notes. British or American spelling may be used. While no special formatting is requested at the outset, upon acceptance authors must format their manuscripts in accordance with the series' guidelines. Contributions will be peer-reviewed through editorial screening and anonymous refereeing by external reviewers. The mobile broadband revolution is taking place in Latin America. Despite various constraints faced by Latin American countries, the spread of mobile telephony and broadband Internet has reached very high levels even among low-income populations. However about half of the continent’s population remains unconnected, and the benefits of connectivity have been slow to materialize. Submissions may examine any aspect of the theme of digital divide in Latin America and the politics of digital inclusion. We welcome submissions on different dimensions of the theme such as mobile youth identities, technology affordability, school transformation by digital media, the diffusion of e-commerce platforms and digital technology in SMEs. We are interested in submissions that address theoretical and/or methodological issues on the topic. Guest Editors: Hernan Galperin, Alejandro Artopoulos, and Jason Beech VOLUME 13: Brazil: Media from the Country of the Future This volume assembles research on any aspect of Brazilian media and communication in its various forms. The parameters are set as broadly as possible as long as the research speaks to a facet of the topic as defined in the call for submissions. Submissions may be empirical, theoretical, or methodological--using any method or approach. The volume aims to encompass research on emergent phenomena, as well as studies with a historical or longitudinal dimension.
