CFP: Autobiography 2.0
by May Friedman 18 Mar '16

18 Mar '16

CALL FOR PAPERS Autobiography 2.0: Family, Relationality and Online Life Writing An edited collection by May Friedman (Ryerson University) and Silvia Schultermandl (University of Graz) We are looking for original chapters which discuss representations of family and kinship in online media such as Twitter, PostSecret, Facebook, Storify and Instagram and the ways in which these digital autobiographies innovate our understandings of life writing genres. Our collection seeks to bring together research on the self-in-relation from both a narratological angle and from the perspective of gender studies, queer theory, postcolonial and transnational studies. We are interested in discussing new and shifting understandings of how we define life writing practices differently in an age of online expressions in various verbal and visual forms, and through the lens of family, broadly defined. Building on our two prior collections, chapters should explore a transnational sensibility (Friedman and Schultermandl, 2011) which honors the ambiguity of borders, families, and identities and views “a lack of fixity as simultaneously inevitable and rich in possibility.” These ideas can be applied to negotiations of identity, relationality and kinship though quick media usage (Friedman und Schultermandl, 2016). Possible contributions may include, but are not limited to discussions which pursue the following questions: - How is relationality mediated differently in an online context and how does this impact our ideas about family and kinship? - What issues of privacy and property are connected to the online presence of digital memoirs? - Which different reading practices do we need to bring to the multi-layered online text of autobiographies 2.0? - How does reading online autobiographies create kinship ties among readers? - How are traditional modalities of identity (race, gender, ability, class, etc.) destabilized by online life writing? We invite 500-word chapter abstracts of critical scholarly, creative, and autoethnographic essays. Deadline is June 1, 2016. Please send inquires and /or abstracts to May Friedman (may.friedman(a)ryerson.ca) <mailto:> AND Silvia Schultermandl (silvia.schultermandl(a)uni-graz.at <mailto:silvia.schultermandl@uni-graz.at>). "Avoiding Adverse Consequences from Digital Addiction and Retaliatory Feedback" offered for open access for the month of March
by Ashu M. G. Solo 17 Mar '16

17 Mar '16

>From http://www.igi-global.com/newsroom/archive/internet-addiction-chinese-epide… "Avoiding Adverse Consequences from Digital Addiction and Retaliatory Feedback" offered for open access for the month of March Internet Addiction: A Chinese Epidemic By IGI Global on Mar 4, 2016 Internet addiction is a prevalent topic today, as the endless landscape of virtual content is multiplying at an incredible rate. Though some specialists don’t consider this a real threat in today’s digitized society, others are looking for ways to combat this dependence. According to <http://www.medicaldaily.com/pulse/internet-addiction-electric-heroin-having…> Medical Daily, in China this perceived epidemic has become such an issue that parents have turned to serious therapies such as Internet addiction boot camps, prohibiting Internet use and enforcing strict rules including diet and exercise routines. IGI Global author and editor <http://www.igi-global.com/affiliate/jonathan-bishop/284983/> Jonathan Bishop has done extensive research on the subject of Internet addiction, and in his work has developed measurement scales and other means to identify and treat Internet addiction. In the chapter “ <http://www.igi-global.com/book/psychological-social-implications-surroundin…> Avoiding Adverse Consequences from Digital Addiction and Retaliatory Feedback,” he and co-author <http://www.igi-global.com/affiliate/ashu-mg-solo/136854/> Ashu M. G. Solo look at the role of the participation continuum in helping to improve relationships that have been damaged as a result of digital addiction. Digital addiction in this context refers to what happens when a person with a compulsion who is not getting that compulsion fulfilled turns to the Internet and other digital technologies in order to fill the void. A chapter in Jonathan Bishop’s academic reference book <http://www.igi-global.com/book/psychological-social-implications-surroundin…> Psychological and Social Implications Surrounding Internet and Gaming Addiction, this research is currently being offered for open access for the month of March. Psychological and Social Implications Surrounding Internet and Gaming Addiction focuses on the dark side of technology and the ways in which individuals are falling victim to compulsive internet use as well as gaming and gambling addictions. Highlighting socio-cultural, psycho-social, and techno-cultural perspectives on problematic technology use, this critical publication is essential to the research and practical needs of therapists, public administrators, psychologists, students, and researchers interested in compulsive disorders, human behavior, dependency, and other key mental health issues. <http://www.igi-global.com/free-content/134503> Access the chapter “Avoiding Adverse Consequences from Digital Addiction and Retaliatory Feedback: The Role of the Participation Continuum” here.
