CFP: Book Chapters for "The Internet and the 2016 Presidential Campaign"
by T. Towner 11 Mar '16

11 Mar '16

CFP: Book Chapters for Edited Volume “The Internet and the 2016 Presidential Campaign” (Edited by Jody C. Baumgartner and Terri L. Towner) Proposal Deadline: Chapter manuscripts due by January 1, 2017. A completed book manuscript delivered by April 1, 2017. Virtually all aspects of political campaigns have been dramatically changed as the result of the Internet. The increased centrality of the Internet in citizens’ lives has had an effect on how we learn about, view, and interact with campaigns and candidates. The online campaign has now evolved into an extensive, sophisticated, and integral part of presidential electioneering. Although many developments surrounding the Internet campaign are now considered to be standard fare, there will no doubt be a number of new developments in 2016. This is inevitable, given the rapid rate of technological change and the ability of citizens, news organizations, candidates, parties and interest groups adapting to these changes. “The Internet and the 2016 Presidential Campaign” will examine these changes, exploring the continued evolution of the Internet’s role in presidential campaigns. Because the Internet has affected virtually all aspects of modern presidential campaigns, the book will be divided into four sections. Each will contain approximately 4-5 chapters. Proposals for each section will be considered: Section I. Campaign Organizations and Political Networks. Section II. Citizen Involvement: Participation and Engagement Section III. Citizen Involvement: Knowledge and Learning. Section IV. Political Newsmaking: Production, Delivery, and Consumption If you are interested in submitting, please contact Jody C. Baumgartner (jodyb(a)jodyb.net) or Terri L. Towner (towner(a)oakland.edu) with any questions or possible topics. -- Associate Professor Pi Sigma Alpha Faculty Advisor Oakland University Department of Political Science

New open access book: Social Media in an English Village
by Major, Alison 11 Mar '16

11 Mar '16

***************Apologies for any cross-posting*************** UCL Press is delighted to announce the publication of an open access book that may be of interest to members of this list: Social Media in an English Village Download Free: http://bit.ly/1QpYbaB This title available in both free open access http://bit.ly/1QpYbaB and print editions (paperback, £15.00, http://bit.ly/1QpYbaB | hardback, £35.00 http://bit.ly/1QpYbaB) Daniel Miller spent 18 months undertaking an ethnographic study with the residents of an English village, tracking their use of the different social media platforms. Following his study, he argues that a focus on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram does little to explain what we post on social media. Instead, the key to understanding how people in an English village use social media is to appreciate just how 'English' their usage has become. He introduces the 'Goldilocks Strategy': how villagers use social media to calibrate precise levels of interaction ensuring that each relationship is neither too cold nor too hot, but 'just right'. He explores the consequences of social media for groups ranging from schoolchildren through to the patients of a hospice, and he compares these connections to more traditional forms of association such as the church and the neighbourhood. Above all, Miller finds an extraordinary clash between new social media that bridges the private and the public domains, and an English sensibility that is all about keeping these two domains separate Download free: http://bit.ly/1QpYbaB About the Why We Post Why do we post on social media? Is it true that we are replacing face-to-face relationships with on-screen life? Are we becoming more narcissistic with the rise of selfies? Does social media create or suppress political action, destroy privacy or become the only way to sell something? And are these claims equally true for a factory worker in China and an IT professional in India? With these questions in mind, nine anthropologists each spent 15 months living in communities in China, Brazil, Turkey, Chile, India, England, Italy and Trinidad. They studied not only platforms but the content of social media to understand both why we post and the consequences of social media on our lives. Their findings indicate that social media is more than communication - it is also a place where we now live. This series explores and compares the results in a collection of ground-breaking and accessible ethnographic studies. To find out more, visit http://www.ucl.ac.uk/why-we-post

"Threading(?)" of messages in Whatsapp

Dear Rich, I dont know if it this phenomenon has a specific name. Im not working exactly on this topic, but I have worked on WhatsApp in my doctoral dissertation and (from a linguistic point of view) I have considered this phenomenon as the disrupted turn adjacency observed in chats: in order to maintain coherence, in my corpus users normally use addressivity (repeat the name of the user theyre writing to), topicalizations and repetitions (for example, they repeat the noun instead of using a pronoun), as in chats. I hope it helps. -- Agnese Sampietro Universitat de València Facultad de Filología, Traducción y Comunicación Avda. Blasco Ibáñez, 32 Tel. CFP EXTENDED: Cunning Knowledge and Media Technologies - abstracts due 19th March
by Christopher O'Neill 11 Mar '16

11 Mar '16

Call for Papers: Cunning Knowledge and Media Technologies *Platform: Journal of Media and Communication* http://platformjmc.com An interdisciplinary journal for early career researchers and graduate students Volume editor: Christopher O’Neill Abstract submissions due: *19th of March, 2016* Full paper submissions due: *20th of May, 2016* Everyone is on the side of the cunning. Media, communications, and cultural studies scholars have increasingly come to identify resistance with the alacrity of Michel de Certeau’s walker, with the trickster whose clever ‘tactics’ always outwit the lumbering stupidities of state power and its ‘strategies’. Cunning knowledge comes from below, it is popular, it resists codification and iteration, it responds to a given exigency *in the moment*, it is defined by a certain *disposition*. Cunning belongs to those who, in a state of lack, are driven to subvert majoritarian institutions and ways of thinking. Theorists including Michel de Certeau, Guy Debord, Sarah Kofman, Carlo Ginzburg, Donna Haraway, Marcel Detienne, Jean-Pierre Vernant, Gilbert Simondon, and François Jullien have celebrated the capacity for cunning to undermine instrumental or otherwise reductive conceptions of knowledge. But what happens when even the largest organs of state and corporate power self-consciously seek to recuperate the power of the cunning for their own ends? In Hesiod we read that Zeus swallowed the Greek goddess of cunning Metis, for “fear that she might bring forth a thunderbolt stronger than his own”. Analogously, Google has produced “a kind of cunning world-wide-web-weaving”, Dan Mellamphy has argued in a previous issue of *Platform*, it has “swallowed-up the ruse and intelligence of the internet” by crafting a powerful, emergent, yet unstable archive, a bottom-up form of administrative knowledge. Furthermore, the distinction Certeau makes between the prescriptive spatial grammar of urban strategists, and the colloquial *détournements* made by walkers, seems less secure today, as pattern-of-life spatial analytics attempt to grasp the movement of the city *in motion*, with all its associated rhythms and cadences. This issue of *Platform* seeks papers which engage with the question: What does ‘cunning’ signify today in the technological realm? Does cunning still belong to those who lack power, or are the powerful today so powerful that they lack not even lack? As the qualities associated with cunning, such as adaptation, induction, speed, and resilience become adopted as normative values in finance and statecraft, does cunning still possess the capacity to disrupt (disruption itself perhaps now holding dubious critical efficacy), or is there a need to consider new modes of critique, ‘new weapons’, perhaps a reappraisal of the neglected virtues of slowness, deliberation, even stasis? *Platform* seeks papers on all aspects related to cunning and media & technology, including but not limited to: -Hunting techniques (the venatic) & (state) surveillance, drones, etc. -The relation between witchcraft, alchemy, sorcery, and modern technoscience -Cunning as a gendered knowledge -Cunning as an aspect of neo-liberal subjectivity -Cunning and lack, aporia, poverty -Cunning and medical technologies (e.g., health tracking technologies) -Cunning as an embodied knowledge, its relation to gesture -The relation between mimesis, trickery, and online self-identity and self-representation -The relation between haptic media and cunning techniques of sleight-of-hand (prestidigitation) -Cross cultural conceptions of cunning (e.g., comparing *metis*, *zhi*, etc.) -The relation between fortune-telling, soothsaying techniques, and predictive analytics -Cunning and design/craft -Cunning and approaches to ‘queering’ normative knowledge practices -Cunning and its relation to temporality and speed -The relation between cunning and other forms of knowledge (e.g., *phronesis*, *sophia*, etc.) Please send all enquiries and submissions to platformjmc(a)gmail.com. Abstracts must be accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae and biographical note, and should not exceed 350 words. Abstracts are to be submitted no later than 19th of March, 2016. Full papers will be due by 20th of May 2016; please be aware that acceptance of abstracts does not guarantee publication. All submissions should be from early career researchers (defined as being within a few years of completing their PhD.) or current graduate students undertaking their Masters, PhD. or international equivalent. All eligible submissions will be sent for double-blind peer-review. Early submission is highly encouraged as the review process will commence on submission. Note: Please read the submission guidelines before submitting work <http://platformjmc.com/make-a-submission/guidelines/>. Submissions received not in house style will not be accepted and authors will be asked to resubmit their work with the correct formatting before it is sent for review. *Platform: Journal of Media and Communication* is a fully refereed, open-access online graduate journal. "Threading(?)" of messages in Whatsapp
by Rich Ling 10 Mar '16

10 Mar '16

Dear all, I am working on a piece where I want to talk about the problem of following a discussion in, for example, a Whatsapp group on a smartphone. If there are too many people contributing to the discussion and there are several themes in play, the messages get jumbled. First of all, is this called threading? I thought it was, but that term does not turn up any relevant literature. Is there a better term? Second, if anyone knows of work in this area, I would be happy to hear about it. Thanks Rich L.

CFP for Special Isse of Social Media + Society on Ethics as Methods in the Era of Big Data
by Andrew Herman 09 Mar '16

09 Mar '16

Ethic as method in an era of big data Special Issue of Social Media + Society We invite contributions to a special issue of Social Media + Society devoted to a critical examination of the future of Internet research practices in the era of computational or big data analytics, with particular focus on how ethics can be configured through methodological approaches. Although we are promiscuously catholic as far as theoretical approaches are concerned, we are especially interested in contributions that pay specific attention to the socio-technical and political economic dimensions of "platform politics" and their ethical implications for research practice, as elaborated in the following questions. These questions constitute only some of the possible entry points into the discussion and we welcome other ideas: * Ethics have been traditionally situated as prior to methods; that is, as philosophical groundings that guide practice. If we situate method in the same time/space as ethics, would a different set of practices emerge? This question becomes relevant in an era when ethics are being reconfigured to better meet the contingencies of particular digital situations. For example, in situations wherein algorithms function with similar agency to humans, our methodological choices for deciding what counts as data or what might be considered a participant in a social interaction have ethical consequences. If every method decision is an ethics decision and vice versa, how might we rethink the relationship between the methodological and axiological? * Ethics are a series of activities that follow from a particular ethos. Etymologically, ethos is about emplacement and orientation. If we take this as a starting point, where is the place from which ethics emerge? What are the ethics of abstraction within this broader understanding of ethos as place? What ontological and more particularly, methodological premises currently guide inquiry practices in the beginning of the 21st century? Are these being transformed in some ways? What levels of abstraction and reconfiguration are involved in the collection of humans (and their data) as data? * How do processes of mediation constitute an ethos of methodological emplacement? All social research entails a particular assemblage of media forms and practices that lay the foundation for methodology. In addition, all practices are situated in particular social, economic, institutional, and disciplinary frameworks. All methodologies, therefore, are situated and mediated. How do ethics get played out over multiple layers of mediation? For example, qualitative researchers commonly abstract lived experience in multiple ways, through inscription of observations, recording of interviews, and often qualitative data analysis software. Quantitative social science likewise depends on methods that extract particular data from the context; sample through variable selection, survey instruments and statistical software packages; and so on. Each assemblage of mediation produces different objects and subjects of research, as well as different definitions of validity, reliability, and so on. What kind of mediations and situations envelop social media platforms and big data analytics? What kinds of research subjects and objects do they suppose and/or propose? What ethical practices do these mediations facilitate, constrain, or require? * If social computing research entails a different configuration of epistemology, ontology and methodology than other modes of empirical research in the human sciences, what are the implications for the model of "informed consent" that is currently the litmus test of the ethics of human subject research? How are we to understand the ethical implications of the power relationship between a corporate entity that is legally construed to be a sovereign subject with the rights of a person (in the US) and the "subjects" of research who are disarticulated from their personhood through a cloud of data analytics? * Should we revisit the old epistemological debates between quantitative and qualitative social science? The discussion of corporate research ethics, particularly since Facebook's "emotional contagion" experiments of 2014, exposed many rifts between on the one hand social media platforms and the teams that perform analytics on automatically-generated large data sets; and on the other hand, qualitative oriented social scientists in internet studies. One participant in the debates described the latter group as being comprised of 'those whose research is primarily rhetorical,' in contrast to the social computing researchers whose work is more 'objective' because of its reliance on data driven experimentation. To what extent is the popularity of data- and evidence-driven models returning to modernist criteria for quality such as validity, reliability and generalizability? What might be the ethical consequences of privileging certain kinds of validity? Of particular salience here would be the social computing emphasis on the extremely large number of cases afforded by social media platforms. Does the comparatively huge number of 'cases' in big data analytics necessarily entail a higher degree of validity, however defined? Further, does the employment of A/B experimental models also enhance validity and rigour? Other thematically resonant topics include (by are no means limited to): * Discussion of epistemological sticking points that might help explain the particular, and some might say peculiar, transformation of human activity to data points that can be analyzed separate from the temporal, textural, and emplaced lived experience. * Emergent ideas of ethics and labor practices involved in the exchange of personal data for platform and interface services. * Discussion or problematization of regulatory driven models of ethical practice that create pre-formed boundaries and regulatory norms; privilege particular activities and methods according to specific definitions of such concepts as informed consent, definition of human subjects, and protection of privacy; and fail to address the complexities of contemporary socio-technical relations of social media platforms. Primary Editors of the Special Issue: Andrew Herman, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada Annette Markham, Aarhus University, Denmark Timeline: Submit 750 word abstract for consideration: May 15, 2016 Receive Invitation to contribute: June 15, 2016 Submit full paper for peer review: November 1, 2016 Receive results of peer review: January 15, 2016 Submit revised manuscript: March 1, 2017 Style/Form of Paper We encourage a range of style for papers. You might choose to make a position statement, defend a manifesto, or develop new models and tools for thinking. You might choose a creative reporting of an empirical study. We are as promiscuous in style as we are in theory, and seek to make a critical intervention with this special issue. The paper length is somewhat shorter than is typical to compel contributors to make strong but precise arguments or critical analyses that might provoke debate and further conversation among readers. Abstracts (submit by May 15, 2016) should be no longer than 750 words, not including references. Please submit abstracts via email to ethicasmethod(a)gmail.com<mailto:ethicasmethod@gmail.com>. Attach the submission as a PDF file. Please include proposed title, author name(s), 750 word abstract, and references. Full papers (submit by November 1, 2016) should be no longer than 6,000 words, including references. Manuscripts should follow the SM+S guidelines which are available at https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/social-media-society/journal202332#submiss… Authors should cite their own work as they would any other author, both in text and in the Reference section, being careful not to indicate that the work they are citing is their own. New Open Access Book: How the World Changed Social Media

***************Apologies for any cross-posting*************** UCL Press is delighted to announce the publication of an open access book that may be of interest to members of this list: How the World Changed Social Media Download Free: http://bit.ly/1WTmdvh This title available in both free open access http://bit.ly/1WTmdvh and print editions (paperback, £15.00, http://bit.ly/1WTmdvh | hardback, £35.00 http://bit.ly/1WTmdvh) How the World Changed Social Media is the first book in Why We Post, a book series that investigates the findings of anthropologists who each spent 15 months living in communities across the world. This book offers a comparative analysis summarising the results of the research and explores the impact of social media on politics and gender, education and commerce. What is the result of the increased emphasis on visual communication? Are we becoming more individual or more social? Why is public social media so conservative? Why does equality online fail to shift inequality offline? How did memes become the moral police of the internet? Supported by an introduction to the project's academic framework and theoretical terms that help to account for the findings, the book argues that the only way to appreciate and understand something as intimate and ubiquitous as social media is to be immersed in the lives of the people who post. Only then can we discover how people all around the world have already transformed social media in such unexpected ways and assess the consequences.
