Call for Papers: 22nd Americas Conference on Information Systems August 11 - 13, 2016, San Diego, CA, USA Dear Colleagues, We welcome submissions for the mini track entitled “International Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Access”, for AMCIS 2016 Track: Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS (SIGCCRIS) Mini Track: International Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Access Description: Networks and systems within the contemporary information society are in many ways constrained by access to ICT, including availability, awareness, ability or literacy, and infrastructural support for ICT use and ICT-mediated processes. All dimensions of ICT access are highly unequal globally. Current efforts to improve infrastructure and availability—including broadband speeds, reliability of connectivity, stability and maintenance of systems, and interoperability—often span geographic boundaries and include both the public and private sectors. Furthermore, efforts to impact awareness and literacy are highly culturally context dependent. Outcomes associated with ICT access initiatives vary significantly, both between countries and within them, and differences in outcomes are often associated with contextual differences in policy interpretation and adoption strategies. This mini-track will focus on all stages of collaborative and independent access initiatives—including policy, planning, implementation, and evaluation—supporting the improvement and sustainability of ICT access and infrastructure across local, national, and regional borders. Call for Papers: Why is ICT access so unequal globally? Why do plans for ICT improvement lead to different outcomes in different contexts? Global variation in ICT access, particularly availability and infrastructure, is extreme, which has serious implications for global communications, relationships, business, and other processes. Efforts to address both imbalances and insufficiencies lead to highly divergent outcomes, despite efforts to replicate successful projects. It is important to understand the status of access from a comparative international perspective, so as to understand the roles of social, political, and cultural factors in shaping outcomes. How successful are international efforts to improve ICT access? Given the increasing interdependence of ICT access internationally, as multinational corporations and global travel and migration, leads people and systems to depend on different infrastructural systems to support their connectivity needs, there has been increased attention toward collaboration, interoperability, and common regulation of ICT access worldwide. Research needs to address international ICT access improvement, so as to better support the reliability and sustainability of global systems and to better design future initiatives. What is the role of culture in shaping the policy process surrounding ICT access improvement? Given the variation in infrastructure, even in instances of collaborative efforts, contextual variation, including the influences of culture, seemingly plays an important role in how initiatives relating to ICT are implemented. Further exploration of how aspects of context shape all stages of initiatives, including planning, implementation, and evaluation, is significant to understanding differences in outcomes. This mini-track invites submissions that address collaborations relating to ICT access, as well as comparative analyses on ICT infrastructure status and initiatives and case studies. Submissions addressing infrastructure and governance of infrastructure at city, state, regional, geographical, national, and international levels are welcome. Announcing AoIR 2016 Keynote: José van Dijck

We are thrilled to announce that José van Dijck ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_van_Dijck) will hold the opening keynote at AoIR 2016 in Berlin. José van Dijck is a professor of Comparative Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her research areas include media technologies, digital culture, social media, popularisation of science and medicine, and television and culture. Her latest book, titled The Culture of Connectivity: A Critical History of Social Media, was published by Oxford University Press (2013). She is currently writing a book on the role of online platforms in the public sphere. After completing her BA and MA at the University of Utrecht, José received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD, 1992). Her graduate and postgraduate work was supported by Fulbright and AAUW grants. She was an assistant professor of Journalism at the University of Groningen (NL) and an associate professor of media and visual culture at the University of Maastricht (NL). In 2001, she became a professor at the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, where she was chair from 2002-2007. She served as Dean of Humanities from 2008 to 2011. She was elected President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015. We greatly look forward to her critical interrogation of the conference theme, INTERNET RULES! Due to their preponderance, service encounters have been widely studied from different perspectives (Hernández-López and Fernández-Amaya, 2015). Although research on service encounters has now a long standing tradition (Merrit 1976), there is a pressing need for further research that focuses on the consequences that outsourcing, globalization (Sifianou 2013) and the new technologies have had on this genre (Garcés-Conejos Blitvich 2015). To that end, this volume aims to further explore interaction in mediated service encounters. Dear friends, I would like to invite you to participate in the research project I'm undertaking as part of the Initiative for Research in Media and Memory at the University of Hull (UK) and that is hosted here --> https://wanderingliquen.com/ <https://owa.scar.hull.ac.uk/owa/redir.aspx?C=c4f0f39191af453ab04568aca3e504…> The aim of this research project is to create an app that will help individuals to explore a topic of their choice in Wikipedia and provide them with information (a feedback) on their usage that will highlight the type of stereotypical biases (memory transgressions towards stereotypes such as gender, race, economic background etc.) that characterize their exploration. The study explores the relationship between human memory and digital memory in creative archives and is being carried out from a feminist and decolonial approach, which means that we are trying to be inclusive throughout the work process and that any feedback you may want to give us on this and other issues will be very well received and much appreciated. The research project has three stages: a) An online survey about the user experience of retrieval and knowledge discovery in creative archives (The questionnaire will take approximately 8 minutes of your time) b) An interview where you will be asked to give further information about some of the questions raised on the general survey (The interview may take between 15 and 30 minutes) c) Two online events to test the usability of the application. The first event will take place between April and May 2016, the second event will take place between September and October 2016 and in both cases you will decide the extent of your participation. Your participation in this research will be completely confidential and data will be averaged and reported in aggregate. Possible outlets of dissemination may be papers published in academic journals and a PhD dissertation. CfP: Panel/Roundtable on ‘Aging in a Digital World” We are looking for some additional participants for either a roundtable or panel submission to #AoIR2016 in Berlin on the topic of “Aging in a Digital World.” Specifically, we are looking for works that highlight the intersection of the internet with later life (50+ years). In keeping with the conference theme of rules, potential questions that might be addressed include: · What are the rules of older adulthood in an increasingly digital world? · What constitutes rule making and rule breaking on the internet at older ages? · Are there generational differences in the ways we engage with socio-technical interfaces? · How might media representations of later life be subverted and/or engaged? · What disparities are introduced as aging adults engage in digital living? · What stories and experiences about aging on/through online spaces are we not telling? Friemel, Professor, Communication & Media Studies Andreas Breiter, Professor, Information Management & Education Technologies University of Bremen OVERVIEW “Big data” has become a contested buzzword for media and communications research, but remains a vague concept when it comes to empirical, contextualised analysis and interpretations. From the point of view of the media user and a critical analysis of media practices, it is rather “digital traces” that matter. The term “traces” puts emphasis on the fact that these data result from the practices of individuals, collectivities, and organizations while using digital media. To understand “digital traces” we have to relate them to the various actors who originate them, as well as the contexts that matter. When putting “digital traces in context,” we have to reflect the programmers who design and implement the related technologies, the features of the technologies (e.g., the underlying algorithms), the actors producing the traces through their practice, the procedures of data gathering, as well as the relation of these data with various kinds of other information. Hence, studying the context of digital traces goes beyond the mere analysis of “big data.” Investigating digital traces is a challenge for research methods (e.g., data mining, validation, research ethics, replicability, transparency), and theories (e.g., grasping general patterns, development of new theories), and a profound reflection of all of this (e.g., redefining the basis for academic critique). The aim of the Special Section is to bring scholars of media and communications research together with scholars of other disciplines to reflect the chances of researching “digital traces in context” as one way of making a proper sense of “datafication.” POSSIBLE TOPICS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: - Theoretical approaches to digital traces and their social, cultural and technological contexts - Qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches to researching digital traces in contextualised ways, including internal and external validation of digital traces - Implications and affordances of system design and infrastructures for digital traces - New ways of visualizing digital traces - Actors defining and producing digital traces (programmers, intermediaries, users, etc.) - Relations between social practices, behaviour and digital traces - Critiques of digital traces producing infrastructures and social practices - Ethical issues concerning the collecting and analysing of digital traces FORMATTING AND REQUIREMENTS To be considered for this collection, a paper of maximum 7,000 words (all-inclusive, which includes the abstract, keywords, images with captions, footnotes, references and appendices, if any) must be submitted by June 16, 2016 and adhere to the following formal requirements: - Formatting according to the most recent version of the APA style-guide (including in-text citations and references). - Any endnotes should be converted to footnotes. - Papers must include the author(s) name(s), title, affiliation and e-mail address. This one-day preconference workshop will focus on four key steps in mining social media for communication research, including overall design, data collection, data analysis, and data visualization.
