Call for Participation: Archives Unleashed 2.0 - Web Archive Hackathon
by Matthew Weber 09 Mar '16

09 Mar '16

All, Please see the CFP below this message for information regarding an upcoming datathon. This is a great opportunity to engage with Web archive research, and to learn more about working with large-scale data. Funding is available for graduate students at US institutions. Regards, Matt ***Call for Participation*** Archives Unleashed 2.0: Web Archive Datahon Library of Congress, Washington DC 14 – 15 June 2016 Travel grants available for US-based graduate students; additional funding may be available for international participants Applications due 15 March 2016 http://www.archivesunleashed.com **This event is a follow-up to the Archives Unleashed datathon held in March at the University of Toronto Library. With generous funding from the National Science Foundation and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (Canada), we’ve been able to extend the datathon program, and are excited to bring this program to the Library of Congress.** The World Wide Web has a profound impact on how we research and understand the past. The sheer amount of cultural information that is generated and, crucially, preserved every day in electronic form, presents exciting new opportunities for researchers. Much of this information is captured within web archives. Web archives often contain hundreds of billions of web pages, ranging from individual homepages and social media posts, to institutional websites. These archives offer tremendous potential for social scientists and humanists, and the questions research may pose stretch across a multitude of fields. Scholars broaching topics dating back to the mid-1990s will find their projects enhanced by web data. Moreover, scholars hoping to study the evolution of cultural and societal phenomena will find a treasure trove of data in web archives. In short, web archives offer the ability to reconstruct large-scale traces of the relatively recent past. While there has been considerable discussion about web archive tools and datasets, few forums or mechanisms for coordinated, mutually informing development efforts have been created. This hackathon presents an opportunity to collaboratively unleash our web collections, exploring cutting-edge research tools while fostering a broad-based consensus on future directions in web archive analysis. This hackathon will bring together a small group of 20-30 participants to collaboratively develop new open-source tools and approaches to hackathon, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. Researchers should be comfortable with command line interactions, and knowledge of a scripting language such as Python strongly desired. By bringing together a group of like-minded scholars and programmers, we hope to begin building unified analytic production effort and to continue coalescing this nascent research community. At this event, we hope to converge on a shared vision of future directions in the use of web archives for inquiry in the humanities and social sciences in order to build a community of practice around various web archive analytics platforms and tools. Thanks to the generous support of the National Science Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the University of Waterloo’s Department of History, the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science and the University of Waterloo, and the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University, we will cover all meals and refreshments for attendees. We are also providing sample datasets for people to work on during the hackathon, or they are happy to use their own. Included datasets are: • the .gov web archive covering the American government domain • Canadian Political Parties and Political Interest Groups collection Those interested in participating should send a 250-word expression of interest and a CV to Matthew Weber (matthew.weber(a)rutgers.edu <mailto:matthew.weber@rutgers.edu>) by 15 March 2016 with “Archives Unleashed” in the subject line. This expression of interest should address the scholarly questions that you will be bringing to the hackathon, and what datasets you might be interested in either working with or bringing to the event. Applicants will be notified by 25 March 2016. We have a limited number of travel grants available for graduate students; preference will be given to those who have not participated in the Archives Unleashed program in the past, although we welcome returning participants. These grants can cover up to $750 in expenses. If you are in an eligible position, please indicate in your statement of interest that you would like to be considered for the travel grant. A letter of support from your graduate supervisor will also strengthen your application. REMINDER: CfP special edition of Internet Policy Review on Australian Internet Policy - abstract submission deadline 14 March
by Angela Daly 09 Mar '16

09 Mar '16

*Special issue on ‘Australian internet policy’* *Call for papers of the **Internet Policy Review* supported by the *Swinburne Institute for Social Research* and *.au Domain Administration (auDA)* TOPIC & RELEVANCE Australia is a country in which there have been various interesting developments in internet policy over the last decade. The ambitious government-led National Broadband Network gained international attention in internet policy circles, although its actual trajectory has proved different from initial plans. While in many ways internet access and use in Australia’s large cities is similar to that experienced by European users, it is also a vast country with many rural and remote populations, for whom the internet is more difficult to access and use. Australia has also not been immune from international trends regarding internet policy, such as an increased emphasis of intellectual property enforcement in the online space, the clash between individual privacy and counter-terrorism measures and the disruption brought to various economic sectors by apps such as Uber. Furthermore, Australia itself is one nation participating in international trade negotiations which are likely to have an effect on internet policy globally, including the recently-signed Trans Pacific Partnership, and the Trade in Services Agreement which is still being discussed. SCOPE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE The aim of the special issue in the *Internet Policy Review* is to explore these recent developments in Australian internet policy and how they relate to internet policy developments internationally. Australia is in many ways a country similar to European states, but also with many differences: both the similarities and differences can be seen playing out in the internet policy field. Accordingly, we welcome proposals that address policy developments and debates so long as they relate to the governance of the Australian internet in some way, or Australian internet policy in regional or international fora. Comparative analyses, especially with European societies and jurisdictions, are particularly welcome (but such comparison is not necessary for inclusion in the special edition). Papers can have both a theoretical or empirical focus, and if empirical can be qualitative, quantitative or employing mixed methods. This call for papers is open to researchers from the fields of policy studies, sociology, law, philosophy, data, information and technology studies, economics and management and, related fields. FOCUS OF THE PAPERS We are particularly interested to receive proposals on the following themes in Australian internet policy: · *Intellectual property and the internet:* definition, enforcement, consequences · *The internet economy:* emerging markets; Uberisation and disruption · *The National Broadband Network; net neutrality* · *Data retention, surveillance and privacy* · *Internet governance; domain name policy* · *The interaction of trade and internet policy:* TPP; TiSA · *Australia’s internet policy regionally/internationally:* intersections with development, migration and security policy · *Digital inclusion:* providing internet access to all Australians BEST PAPER AWARD A best paper award will be issued to the paper accepted for publication that the editorial team judges as being of the highest quality and provoking the most interesting arguments. SPECIAL EDITION EDITORS - Dr Angela Daly, Queensland University of Technology ( angela.daly(a)qut.edu.au) - Professor Julian Thomas, Swinburne Institute for Social Research ( jthomas(a)swin.edu.au) IMPORTANT DATES *14 March 2016:* Deadline for expression of interest and abstract submissions (500 word abstracts). *4 April 2016:* Authors informed of decision on abstracts *2 June 2016:* Deadline for full text submissions (max. 30,000 characters spaces included). All details on text submissions can be found under: http://policyreview.info/authors *October 2016:* Publication of the special issue *Submission of abstracts via online form: http://policyreview.info/node/392 <http://policyreview.info/node/392>*

Final call for abstracts on "Future Making" for Danish STS Conference. Deadline March 15
by Annette Markham 08 Mar '16

08 Mar '16

**apologies for any cross listing*** Dear AoIR Colleagues, Please note the March 15 deadline. It's only 300 word abstracts, so that's plenty of time :) Join me and many other STS colleagues in June, 2015 at the Danish STS (DASTS) Conference in Aarhus, June 2-3, 2015. http://sts.au.dk/dasts16/ You can submit papers in many different sessions. I'm organizing a panel called Future Making: Methods, 'Data', and Social Change." See below for session details. Session 6: FUTURE MAKING: METHODS, ‘DATA,’ AND SOCIAL CHANGE Organizer: Annette Markham, Aarhus University. Please submit Title and 300 word abstract before the end of March 15, 2015 via the webform: http://sts.au.dk/dasts16/submit/ . For questions, contact sessions organizer: amarkham [at] dac [dot] au [dot] dk Session Description: How do people make sense of intensely local but digitally mediated and heavily networked life in the 21st Century? How do individuals deal with the enormous amounts of data they generate and accumulate in their everyday digital lives? What stories are told through this data? How much of the story does an individual actually control? What stories are automatically generated by how we organize our files (or not), switch computers, use multiple storage devices, both in the cloud and in our pockets? These questions are well suited to an STS approach, especially if we embrace the challenge to move beyond description to intervention. Within a proactive stance of ethical future making, what creative practices can we offer to developers, citizens, and policy makers to critically interrogate the situations constituted through automation and datafication? How might our well-honed STS methods help people grapple with, manage, or make sense of the complexity of the personal big data they produce as they live their everyday lives in a digital era? This track invites contributions that address these questions and build a case for intervention; modes and attitudes of inquiry that contribute research expertise to collaborative and participatory social change. Format can be traditional paper presentations, but track participants are particularly encouraged to consider how their ideas can be conveyed through workshops, creative presentations, exhibitions, interactive discussions, or other ‘unconference’ activities. These experimental formats are useful for thinking through practices other than academic discourse, while being grounded firmly in robust academic methodologies, to develop models for inquiry that are oriented more toward social change than scholarly description. More specific to the topic of building better digital futures, this track is designed to provoke energetic discussions of how STS scholarship can transform findings into interventions, raise consciousness about the automated and algorithmic processes increasingly curating our memories, and help people develop personally meaningful methods for documenting, archiving, and later re-exhibiting lived experience, whether individually or as part of larger groups and municipalities. The focus of individual submissions should connect to this track theme. Proposals are not limited to the following, but could be focused on one or more of these well known problems of contemporary digital culture: *Datafication*. This term marks the growing tendency to digitize, quantify, and transform human experience into data; this process increasingly directs personal and professional activities. When used as part of big data calculations, our experiences are equalized and flattened into data points, giving the illusion that all experiences are equally meaningful and ultimately accessible. Our digital traces are stored in large government and privately held data centers, bought and sold for marketing, personalization of apps, or just to keep track of us. Data are simultaneously invisible and everywhere. They assume an “itness,” making their qualities seem concrete and incontrovertible. *Algorithmic interpellation*. Algorithms manipulate data and feed us information about ourselves. Future norms and structures are emerging through current designs and frameworks for thinking about social media platforms; the automated and corporatized features of these platforms do not necessarily operate in the best interest of people. *Locus of control*. As information becomes digitized, such as family photos, letters, and other everyday artifacts, information that helps individuals remember gets lost in deep file structures and outdated devices. Although there are many apps and programs to help us sort through these datasets, the digitizing processes has not significantly improved our ability to seamlessly retrieve and make sense of past events. At a broader structural level, similar question can be raised: What is the role of social media platforms in creating our memories? How much does the automated Facebook curation of our Year in Review exhibit, for example, dictate the stories that will eventually be understood as individual memory, generational history, and cultural heritage? *Hegemonic culturing*. Whatever we define as a case, a situation, or a phenomenon is at least a complex play of negotiations, alignments and realignments within society. How do these structures and processes function hegemonically, neutralizing and naturalizing certain ways of being while obscuring other alternatives? This question is important particularly when and if people don’t think of datafication or algorithmic processing as problems at all. A subtle shift in the discourse over the past 20 years indicates a growing acceptance of the ‘fact’ of constant surveillance and mass data collection by companies that provide users with applications, platforms, and devices. At the same time, individuals are increasingly held personally responsible for actions online, while the platforms and infrastructures are portrayed as natural carriers and neutral collectors of data. submit session abstract for consideration by March 15 here: http://sts.au.dk/dasts16/submit/ ***************************************************** Annette N. Reminder: CfP Digital Media, Psychoanalysis and the Subject
by Jacob Johanssen 08 Mar '16

08 Mar '16

CfP Digital Media, Psychoanalysis and the Subject Deadline: March 25 Editors: Jacob Johanssen (University of Westminster, UK) and Steffen Krüger (University of Oslo, Norway). Abstract: Revisiting psychoanalytic theory and practice as a potential for media and communication studies, this CfP for a special issue of CM: Communication and Media Journal, to be published in December 2016, seeks to enable a dialogue between communication/media studies and psychoanalysis in order to critically explore the processes and dynamics of contemporary culture. Guiding questions are: - What are the psychoanalytic concepts and methodological processes that have a bearing on our research into media and/or communication? - What are the implications of psychoanalysis, its theoretical tools and practice, for media and communication studies - specifically for the conceptions of subjectivity in the field? - What are the implications of media and communication studies for psychoanalytic concepts/ practice? Call for Papers: For the past two decades, critical research into media and communication has sought ways to understand the significant shift brought about by digitalisation and a proliferation of networked media. With this shift, questions of individuality, the single media user as entity and her/his relations to society have taken on renewed salience. Not only is consuming media content (films, TV series, websites etc.) becoming open to increasingly individual choices (streaming services across different mediums, for example), but the individual as such has become part of the content being produced. People find themselves instigated to express and share who they are and relate themselves to others via multiple, networked media channels on diverse platforms. These platforms are characterised by the double objective of enabling feelings of community whilst also profiting from the ensuing communication. Relying on targeted data extraction as business models, the relations they facilitate tend toward the commodification of the individual and, intentional or not, open up possibilities for corporate and governmental surveillance. The notions and concepts with which researchers have sought to emphasise and highlight relevant aspects of this shifting situation, such as 'convergence', 'connectivity', 'participation', ‘produsage', ‘interactivity’ and ‘user-generated content’ etc. have long since become common parlance. They are challenged and defended, changed and rearranged. To these concepts attach themselves a variety of approaches, theories, models and assumptions that focus on a diverse range of angles, including gender, ethnicity, class, subculture or group memberships from micro, meso, to macro perspectives. With these come diverse philosophies and worldviews that often concern questions of activity, passivity and agency with regard to media use. Yet, whereas many of these approaches can be seen as responses to the renewed centrality of the individual media user, the conceptions of subjectivity underlying these works frequently remain implicit and in need of reflection. What is established by such 'implicit notions' of subjectivity (Dahlgren, 2013: 72) is an idea of media users leaning strongly towards rationality, cognition, categorisation and assimilation. While, as mentioned above, consumer choices become ever finer grained to meet individual demand, the challenge that the resulting notion of individuality poses to our conceptions of the subject have hardly been taken up by media and communication studies so far (see Willson, 2010). Thus, in order to counter the tendency of foregoing the relevance of subjective experience, Peter Dahlgren has recently advocated ‘reactivating concerns about the subject’ (2013: 73) in media studies research, stating that researchers in the field need to consider also ‘communicative modes beyond the rational’ (ibid: 82). Heeding this call, psychoanalysis may be the discipline best equipped to point to ways out of the rationalistic impasse. As Brown and Lunt (2002) suggest, ‘there is something about psychoanalysis that is corrosive to the whole model of the subject built up by the social identity tradition’ (2002: 8) – i.e. the very tradition onto which implicit models of the subject in media and communication studies frequently default. This call for papers wants to initiate a critical appreciation of this ‘corrosiveness’ of psychoanalytic theory as a productive potential for media and communication studies. With its diverse traditions – Freudian, Kleinian, Lacanian, Winnicottian, relational, etc. – foregrounding the conflicted, ambivalent, defended, divided, multifaceted, layered and processual aspects of human beings in their relations with others, psychoanalysis shifts our attention to contradiction, incoherence, ambiguity and resistance in media texts as well as in the responses to them. In view of the new media situation it seems also well worth to readdress the critiques of psychoanalysis brought forth by Michel Foucault (1966) as well as Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari (2009). While psychoanalysis is primarily a clinical field, the application of theoretical and methodological concepts outside the consulting room has shown that they can be immensely fruitful and productive as long as they steer clear from broad-sweeping generalisations and pathologizations. Scholars within media and communication studies (e.g. Kris 1941, Kris and Leites 1947; Radway 1984; Walkerdine 1984, 2007; Ang 1985; Silverstone 1994; Turkle 1995, 2011; Hills 2002; Richards 2007; Kavka 2009; Dean 2010; Elliott 2013; Krzych 2010, 2013; Yates and Bainbridge 2012, 2014; Carpentier 2014a, b; Balick 2014; Krüger and Johanssen 2014, Johanssen forthcoming; Krüger forthcoming) have drawn on psychoanalytic schools in different manners and to varying degrees. Connecting with and reflecting upon this tradition, we invite articles that focus on the implications that psychoanalytic concepts and methodologies have on studies in media and communication, and/or, vice versa, the implications that media and communication studies have on our understanding of psychoanalytic concepts and practice. While our main focus is on digital media, we also want to encourage media and communication researchers in other fields to consider the implications of and for psychoanalysis. Contributions are thus invited to address the following questions: - What are the psychoanalytic concepts and methodological processes that have a bearing on our research into media communication? - What are the implications of psychoanalysis, its theoretical tools and practice, for media and communication studies - specifically for the conceptions of subjectivity in the field? - What are the implications of media and communication studies for psychoanalytic concepts/ practice? These broader questions can translate into more specific ones, e.g.: - What has psychoanalysis to offer to the interpretation of research data? - What is the legacy and/or future of psychoanalytic thinking in media and communication research? - Which psychoanalytic concepts are useful for thinking about the limiting as well as empowering opportunities that present themselves within contemporary digital culture? - How is this culture useful for thinking about psychoanalysis? - What and how can we understand the subject in relation to concrete patterns of media content production and consumption? - How does the subject cope with and make sense of the ubiquity of media communication? With what psychosocial effects? Possible fields of study are: - Psychoanalysis and media surveillance - Psychoanalysis and data ownership - Psychoanalysis and media audiences - Psychoanalysis and social media (self presentation, narcissism, flaming, trolling, etc.) - Psychoanalysis and media institutions - Psychoanalysis and journalistic practices - Psychoanalysis, media and ideology The editors specifically invite authors to initiate conversations between psychoanalytic concepts and media scholarship. Theoretical or empirical works are equally welcome. We invite full papers (6000-8000 words including references) as well as shorter commentaries (up to 3000 words) on the topic. Please submit abstracts (300 words) by 25 March 2016 to: digit.psa(a)gmail.com. Timeline: 25 March: Deadline for abstract submissions. Authors will be notified within two weeks. 27 June: Deadline for full paper submissions. 16 September: Deadline for submission of revised papers. 31 October: Deadline for final author revisions. About the Editors: Jacob Johanssen (j.johanssen(a)westminster.ac.uk) is Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster. His PhD research involves interviews with viewers of the programme ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ and explores their investments, affective responses and wider viewing practices by drawing on media studies and psychoanalysis both theoretically and methodologically. His research interests include psychoanalysis and the media, affect theory, psychosocial studies, critical theory, as well as digital culture. Steffen Krüger, PhD, (steffen.krueger(a)media.uio.no) is postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo (Norway). He is contributing editor of the journal American Imago – Psychoanalysis and the Human Sciences. In his current research into digital culture, he analyses forms of interaction in digital media from a psychosocial, and specifically, depth-hermeneutic perspective. About CM: CM: Communication and Media Journal is based in Serbia, at the University of Belgrade (http://aseestant.ceon.rs/index.php/comman/issue/current) CM is an open access, double blind peer reviewed academic journal. Over the past years, several special issues, aimed at an international academic audience, have been published (such as Interrogating audiences: Theoretical horizons of participation, edited by Carpentier and Dahlgren, 2011).
