Limn #6: The Total Archive
by ckelty ckelty 07 Mar '16

07 Mar '16

Dear AOIRers, Boris Jardine and I just finished editing a great set of short (teachable!) articles on the past and present of vast accumulations of data, informaion, samples, records, books and many other things. It’s a whirlwind tour, we hope you will take a read, and share with people who might be interested. Christopher Kelty -------------------------------------------- Limn Number 6: The Total Archive http://limn.it/issue/06/ Edited by Boris Jardine and Christopher Kelty Vast accumulations saturate our world: security agencies want every phone call and email, advertisers want every preference of every individual; India wants to give everyone a number, and maybe an iris scan; hundreds of thousands of whole genome sequences; seed banks of all existing plants, and of course, books... all of them. Just what is the purpose of these optimistically total archives, and how are they changing us? This issue of Limn asks authors and artists to consider how these accumulations govern us, where this obsession with totality came from and how we might think differently about big data and algorithms, by thinking carefully about archives. http://limn.it @limnmagazine http://facebook.com/limnmagazine

Dear all, A quick reminder that the launch of the new Centre for Digital Culture at King’s College London will take place this Wednesday, 9th of March. Join us for a debate regarding #TheGreatTransformation of digital technology and social change, and for a wine reception! March 9th – 7pm — Safra Lecture Theatre – King’s College London The event is free but please RSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/launch-of-the-centre-for-digital-culture-at-ki… <https://www.eventbrite.com/e/launch-of-the-centre-for-digital-culture-at-ki…> #TheGreatTransformation: digital technology and social change At the time of the Internet, smartphones and social media there seems to be virtually no part of society that is not affected by the diffusion of digital technology. From the private to the public, from personal relationships to the economy and political movements we are witnessing a great transformation whose magnitude is similar to the one brought in the 19th century by capitalism and industrialization. But what do the different changes brought by digital technology share in common? What is the overarching logic guiding the digital transformation of society? And is it changing society for better or worse? We will discuss these issues with a number of leading scholars in the field of digital culture: Tim Jordan is Professor and Head of School of Media, Film and Music at Sussex University. He is the author of a number of influential books including Cyberpower: The Culture and Politics of Cyberspace and the Internet (1999), Activism!: direct action, hacktivism and the future of society (2002), and Information Politics (2015). Joanna Zylinska is a writer, lecturer, artist and curator, working in the areas of new technologies and new media, ethics, photography and art. She is Professor of New Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is the author of a number of influential books including Life after New Media (2012/ with Sarah Kember) and The Cyborg Experiments (2002). Mark Coté is a leading researcher in the social, cultural, political and economic dimensions of big data. He has received numerous research grants from the AHRC and EU-Horizon 2020 as both PI and CI, partnering with the Open Data Institute, British Library, Aarhus University, the University of Pisa and many others. His work has been published widely across leading journals including Big Data & Society. Mercedes Bunz is a German art historian, philosopher and journalist. She has worked as the technology correspondent for the Guardian and is currently senior lecturer journalism and digital media, University of Westminster and has been involved in digital publishing and open access project. She is the author of The Silent Revolution: How Digitalization Transforms Knowledge, Work, Journalism and Politics without Making Too Much Noise (2014). The conversation will be moderated by Paolo Gerbaudo, Director of the Centre for Digital Culture. We are looking forward to seeing you all there!

Three new free books from the UCL Why We Post Social Media Study
by Major, Alison 07 Mar '16

07 Mar '16

******Apologies for any cross-posting******** UCL Press is delighted to announce the publication of three brand new open access books that may be of interest to members of this list. Download all three books free from http://bit.ly/1TRDJAw *********************************************** How the World Changed Social Media Download free from http://bit.ly/24AUbKH How the World Changed Social Media is the first book in Why We Post, a book series that investigates the findings of anthropologists who each spent 15 months living in communities across the world. This book offers a comparative analysis summarising the results of the research and explores the impact of social media on politics and gender, education and commerce. What is the result of the increased emphasis on visual communication? Are we becoming more individual or more social? Why is public social media so conservative? Why does equality online fail to shift inequality offline? How did memes become the moral police of the internet? Supported by an introduction to the project’s academic framework and theoretical terms that help to account for the findings, the book argues that the only way to appreciate and understand something as intimate and ubiquitous as social media is to be immersed in the lives of the people who post. Only then can we discover how people all around the world have already transformed social media in such unexpected ways and assess the consequences. Download free from http://bit.ly/24AUbKH *********************************************** Social Media in an English Village Download free from http://bit.ly/1nhPP9o Daniel Miller spent 18 months undertaking an ethnographic study with the residents of an English village, tracking their use of the different social media platforms. Following his study, he argues that a focus on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram does little to explain what we post on social media. Instead, the key to understanding how people in an English village use social media is to appreciate just how ‘English’ their usage has become. He introduces the ‘Goldilocks Strategy’: how villagers use social media to calibrate precise levels of interaction ensuring that each relationship is neither too cold nor too hot, but ‘just right’. He explores the consequences of social media for groups ranging from schoolchildren through to the patients of a hospice, and he compares these connections to more traditional forms of association such as the church and the neighbourhood. Above all, Miller finds an extraordinary clash between new social media that bridges the private and the public domains, and an English sensibility that is all about keeping these two domains separate. Download free, or purchase print from http://bit.ly/1nhPP9o *********************************************** Social Media in Southeast Turkey Download free from http://bit.ly/1oOTIDJ This book presents an ethnographic study of social media in Mardin, a medium-sized town located in the Kurdish region of Turkey. The town is inhabited mainly by Sunni Muslim Arabs and Kurds, and has been transformed in recent years by urbanisation, neoliberalism and political events. Elisabetta Costa uses her 15 months of ethnographic research to explain why public- facing social media is more conservative than offline life. Yet, at the same time, social media has opened up unprecedented possibilities for private communications between genders and in relationships among young people – Costa reveals new worlds of intimacy, love and romance. She also discovers that, when viewed from the perspective of people’s everyday lives, political participation on social media looks very different to how it is portrayed in studies of political postings separated from their original complex, and highly socialised, context. Download free, or purchase print from http://bit.ly/1oOTIDJ *********************************************** About Why We Post Why do we post on social media? Is it true that we are replacing face-to-face relationships with on-screen life? Are we becoming more narcissistic with the rise of selfies? Does social media create or suppress political action, destroy privacy or become the only way to sell something? And are these claims equally true for a factory worker in China and an IT professional in India? With these questions in mind, nine anthropologists each spent 15 months living in communities in China, Brazil, Turkey, Chile, India, England, Italy and Trinidad. They studied not only platforms but the content of social media to understand both why we post and the consequences of social media on our lives. Their findings indicate that social media is more than communication – it is also a place where we now live. The first three titles have now been released- if you’d like us to notify you about forthcoming titles when the publish, sign up at bit.ly/whywepostbooks To find out more about the Why We Post project (outputs include a MOOC, website, youtube channel and 11 open access books), visit ucl.ac.uk/why-we-post Follow UCL Press on Twitter: @uclpress Website: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-press --- Alison Major Marketing and Distribution Manager, UCL Press UCL (University College London) Gower Street London WC1E 6BT Email: uclpresspublishing(a)gmail.com<mailto:uclpresspublishing@gmail.com> www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-press<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-press> Follow us on Twitter @UCLpress

Call Updated to include the Caribbean: Emerald Studies in Media and Communications
by Laura Robinson 07 Mar '16

07 Mar '16

Hi Everyone, We're delighted to update our current call to include the Caribbean. For additional information please see http://www.emeraldmediastudies.com/Calls---Volumes.html or the call below: VOLUME 12: ICTs and the Politics of Inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean Guest Editors, Latin America: Hernan Galperin, Alejandro Artopoulos, and Jason Beech Guest Editor, Caribbean: Hopeton S. Dunn This volume assembles relevant research focusing on ICTs in Latin America and the Caribbean. Regarding Latin America, the mobile broadband revolution is taking place in Latin America. Despite various constraints faced by Latin American countries, the spread of mobile telephony and broadband Internet has reached very high levels even among low-income populations. However about half of the continent’s population remains unconnected, and the benefits of connectivity have been slow to materialize. Submissions may examine any aspect of the theme of digital divide in Latin America and the politics of digital inclusion. We welcome submissions on different dimensions of the theme such as mobile youth identities, technology affordability, school transformation by digital media, the diffusion of e-commerce platforms and digital technology in SMEs. We are interested in submissions that address theoretical and/or methodological issues on the topic. The Caribbean region reflects perhaps the greatest cultural, geographical and linguistic diversity in the Western hemisphere. It consists of large and small states with English, French, Spanish, Dutch and Indian cultural backgrounds, and in some instances offer a combination of several languages and varied traditions. Because of historical links with Africa, Europe and other metropoles and the region's proximity to the United States and Latin America, the Caribbean has developed a cosmopolitan reputation, enhanced in some parts by an active tourism sector and openness to diverse external influences. One such is the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on practices of governance, business operation, education and civic life among other areas. Although surveys conducted in Jamaica and other parts of the region reflect an almost ubiquitous access to the mobile phone, there remains a prevailing high percentage of exclusion from high speed broadband technologies and from Internet-based content, particularly among sections of rural populations, the urban poor and persons with disabilities. How can these issues of exclusion be addressed in small island developing states such as those in the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, or in countries experiencing conditions of severe economic challenge such as in Haiti, or in more buoyant but still emerging economies of countries like Barbados, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic? Volume 12 in the proposed new editions by Emerald seeks to address ICTs and the Politics of Inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean. This timely publication will provide an opportunity to share on-going research and analysis of the subject, not only on Latin America, but also on the Caribbean, including such countries as Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, St Lucia, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Potential contributors would examine not only issues of access but also areas of content, policy and size. The potential contributions would also explore the differentiated effects of ICT technology use on various demographic groups including youth, the elderly, men and women. The gender dimension would also factor into strategies for ICT adoption and emerging forms of broadband uses across different population groups. Consistent with the Call By Emerald, chapters which also address research-related methodological and theoretical issues would also be invited as part of the contributions from the Caribbean region. VOLUME 13: Brazil: Media from the Country of the Future This volume assembles research on any aspect of Brazilian media and communication in its various forms. The parameters are set as broadly as possible as long as the research speaks to a facet of the topic as defined in the call for submissions. Submissions may be empirical, theoretical, or methodological--using any method or approach. The volume aims to encompass research on emergent phenomena, as well as studies with a historical or longitudinal dimension. Comparative studies are welcome as long as Brazil is one of the central case studies. Guest Editors: Sonia Virgínia Moreira, Monica Martinez, Heloisa Pait, Joseph D. Straubhaar, Antonio C. CFPs: Social Media: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!
by Yogesh K. Dwivedi 06 Mar '16

*The 15th IFIP Conference on e-Business, e-Services and e-Society (I3E 2016)* *“**Social Media: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!**”* *http://www.swansea.ac.uk/som/i3e2016/* <http://www.swansea.ac.uk/som/i3e2016/> *13-15 September 2016* *Swansea, United Kingdom* *Paper Submission Deadline:* *15 March 2016* The ubiquity of social media has had a profound effect on the way we communicate and is of significant importance to society and business. Social media tools have helped break down geographical barriers that once restricted communication and have led to an explosion of e-participation, virtual presence, and online communities. Professional benefits of social media include sharing of information, publicity, and giving and receiving support and advice. Consumers have become increasingly empowered to exert an influence on brands through online communities and businesses are able to acquire rapid feedback and garner insight into individual preferences without observer effects. Analysis of social media content via automated techniques and systems can also help to safeguard society from organized crime but such uses remain a delicate issue. With seemingly endless benefits it is easy to overlook the disadvantages of social media, which are an increasingly important consideration as social media platforms continue to proliferate. Social media has facilitated a loss of ownership and control of content as private, public and institutional domains increasingly overlap. There is a need for careful balancing of professionalism and freedom of speech, to ensure that posts do not cause offence or harm reputations. Other drawbacks include time pressure, plagiarism, misrepresentation, addiction, and negative psychological consequences. While providing a means to protect public safety, social media also provides a means of threatening it and enabling new forms of cyber-crime. This conference aims to bring together a variety of disciplines and a community for the advancement of knowledge regarding the adoption, use, impact, and potential of social media. To achieve this goal, we invite researchers and practitioners to present their ideas and findings at the *15th IFIP Conference on e-Business, e-Services, and e-Society* to be held at *Swansea University, UK in 2016*. Theoretical and empirical papers employing quantitative, qualitative, and/or critical methods are welcomed. *Topics of submission *may include but are not limited to: · Adoption and diffusion of social media · Blogging and microblogging · Challenges of social media · Citizen participation via social media · Collaboration and knowledge management · Content and information analysis · Corporate social networks · Crisis management enabled by social media · Crowdsourcing · Cyberbullying and trolling · Definition and taxonomy of different types of social media · Disaster prevention using social media · Marketing campaigns · Disruption as a result of social media · Economic and social effects of social media · Effects of social media on consumer choice · Ethical issues relating to social media · Impact of social media on consumer behaviour · Impact of social media on marketing strategy · Innovation through social media · Managing presence and reputation on social media · Personnel recruitment/management · Policy challenges · Political and social · Privacy issues with social media · Rigour in social media research · Sentiment analysis · Social media and policy · Social media and public governance · Social media data mining, analytics and intelligence · Social media for B2B marketing · Social media research and theory development · Social media strategy and integration · Social media to support education · Social media, product innovation, and product life cycle · Social media transparency, openness, and anti-corruption · The future (good/bad/ugly) of social media *LOCATION* The 15th IFIP Conference will be held at Swansea University’s brand new Bay Campus located on the majestic sweep of Swansea Bay and within easy reach of the vibrant City Centre. As an industrial powerhouse of the 19th century, Swansea and the surrounding areas are rich in history which can be explored in a number of local museums. To the west of the City is the Gower Peninsula where you can find Rhossili Bay voted Britain’s Best Beach and 9th best in the world by TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice. *IMPORTANT DATES* - Paper Submission: *15 March 2016* - Authors Notification: *30 April 2016* - Early Bird Registration: *30 May 2016* - Conference dates: *13 to 15 September 2016* *PAPER SUBMISSION AND PROCEEDINGS* Authors should submit (*Submission website:* https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=i3e2016) original, unpublished research papers. [selfie] New book: Digital Golems. Copyright and Lex Electronica (in French)
by Melanie Dulong de Rosnay 04 Mar '16

04 Mar '16

(sorry for cross-posting and self-promotion) Dear all, I am pleased to announce to the French readers the release of my book 'Les Golems du numérique. Droit d'auteur et Lex Electronica'. The first 30 pages are online and here is a summary in English. Kind regards, Melanie Digital Golems. Copyright and Lex Electronica Melanie Dulong de Rosnay Foreword by Lawrence Lessig Presses des Mines http://www.iscc.cnrs.fr/spip.php?article2196 Regulatory models from the analog era, based on physical medium scarcity and exclusivity, are called into question by digital technology paradigms of copying, remixing and sharing. Law and copyright in particular have developed and adapted in response to innovations in reproduction and dissemination technologies, creating access control as an artificial corrective. Technical standards and the extension of exclusive rights have been conceived independently, leading to tensions between cultural industries and rights of the public. But they can also lead to the constitution of commons. The book offers a techno-legal model of regulation for the sharing of culture. Following research on “lex informatica”, it is based on the mutual influence between law and code. It proposes a reconception of copyright categories to facilitate creative usages and non-market sharing, and an improved technical expression of those rights built on the systematic analysis of licenses and ontologies. As foreword author Lawrence Lessig summarizes: "The law could infect code, carrying its values". The golems, artificial creatures of the mythology, designate pieces of computer code that prevent to copy and reuse works online. Developed by right holders to protect their interests, they implement decisions automatically and indiscriminately , without control by the society, the state or the law, without distinguishing legitimate uses. But the golems can turn against their masters and create resistance. Beyond access to information and culture that is the subject of this book, the metaphor turns powerful to denounce the logic of encoding binary rules in the digital devices and algorithms that govern our lives and make decisions based on big data and traces we leave on networks, platforms, connected objects and smart cities. This book is grounded on over ten years of participation to copyright legal and technical regulation on the field. Co-founder and legal lead of Creative Commons France at CERSA CNRS University Paris 2 between 2003 and 2013, the author participated to MPEG technical standardisation at ISO, to two advisory commitees on copyright at French Ministry of Culture, and to diplomatic conferences at WIPO (United Nations) with the status of observer as president of Communia, the international association on the digital public domain. -- Melanie Dulong de Rosnay http://www.iscc.cnrs.fr/spip.php?article1558 Permanent researcher French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) Institute of Communication Sciences (CNRS - Paris Sorbonne University - UPMC) Visiting fellow London School of Economics Department of Media and Communications
