Hi folks, an updated version of my comprehensive digital campaigning/online advocacy guide is now online. The 2016 version is completely rewritten for this year's elections, with new chapters and sections on new tools and tactics. It keeps the same strategic emphasis as the 2014 edition, though, focused on winning political battles rather than pursuing shiny digital objects. It's the best snapshot of how digital politics is actually being done in 2016 that I know of. If you downloaded a PDF from Epolitics.com in the past, you should have received an email directing you to a free copy of the new version. Panel/roundtable on digital media/news content analysis?

Hi everyone, My colleague Jill Hopke of DePaul U. and I would like to form a panel or roundtable for AoIR 2016 on methodological questions related to content analysis of digital media. As Jill and I were coming up with coding schemes for Twitter data and news media for a project, questions kept coming up about constant changes in social media platforms, the longevity of social media studies in light of these constant changes, the relationship between textual and audiovisual data, what news outlets to include/exclude when virtually all are now online in some form, and many others. We think these and related questions could make for an interesting panel or roundtable where we could use examples from our own research as prompts for discussing these issues. Dear Educator: I am a doctoral student at Nova Southeastern University in the Ed.D. program, with a concentration in Instructional Technology and Distance Education. My dissertation focuses on the perceptions of educators regarding games and game-based learning for educational use in higher education. 6th annual International Symposium on Digital Ethics

Call for abstracts The Center for Digital Ethics & Policy at Loyola University Chicago (digitalethics.org) will be holding its 6th annual International Symposium on Digital Ethics on Nov 4th, 2016. The keynote speaker will be Professor Lilie Chouliaraki from the London School of Economics. We are looking for papers on digital ethics. Topics might include privacy, anonymity, griefing, free speech, intellectual property, hacking, scamming, surveillance, information mining, transparency, digital citizenship, or anything else relating to ethical questions and digital technology. This is an interdisciplinary symposium, we welcome all backgrounds and approaches to research. Abstracts should propose original research that has not been presented or published elsewhere. The abstract should be between 500 and 1,000 words in length (not including references) and should include a discussion of the methodology used. Authors of accepted papers will be eligible for up to $400 in travel funds to be able to attend the Chicago symposium. The author(s) of the top student paper will be eligible for up to $1,000 in travel funds. Abstracts are due by midnight CST on April1st, 2016, and should follow APA or MLA. Authors of top papers will have the opportunity to have their work published in Proceedings from the 6th Annual Symposium on Digital Ethics. Online Survey Recruitment Notice Study Title: Internet and Web Archives Research Use Survey Dear Researchers and Librarians: Do you use Internet and Web archives in your research? Do you plan to in the future? Or are you an archivist or librarian who either collects or plans to collect archived Internet content? This email is seeking participants for a study being conducted by Dr. Matthew Weber, Rutgers University, and Dr. Pamela Graham, Columbia University. We are examining the research use of Internet and Web Archives by scholars and librarians. We are specifically interested in your opinions regarding challenges that exist with regards to using these archives in research, and the types of metadata that you either collect or use (or would in the future). The Social Computing Lab’s REU program allows talented undergraduates to spend 10 weeks during the summer in a research laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University. Students will conduct research in an area matched to the interests expressed in the student’s application. Guidance and supervision of the research project will be provided by the faculty member as well as, in some cases, postdoctoral fellows and/or graduate students. Seminars specific to those participating in the REU program will be held weekly including seminars on graduate admissions and career opportunities in science, education, computer science and engineering. In addition, Social Computing Lab seminars and those held by Carnegie Mellon’s Human Computer Interaction Institute and Language Technologies Institute and will be open to the students, giving them exposure to a wide range of research in social computing. Each student will receive a fellowship stipend with funds for housing support. Applications are encouraged from students who wish to learn to conduct research in a modern academic research laboratory under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers and experiment in social computing and online collaboration. The REU program will expose students to the excitement and opportunities of a research career. This experience will provide excellent preparation for students interested in subsequently pursuing a Masters or Ph.D. degree. Thanks, Huatong ------------------- *Globalizing User Experience: Strategies, Practices, and Techniques for Culturally Sensitive Design* *Technical Communication*, the journal of the Society for Technical Communication (STC), is soliciting article proposals for an upcoming special issue that will examine how technical communicators can design for new kinds of user experiences in international, cross-cultural, and multicultural contexts. This special issue will be published in February of 2017, and the guest editors are Guiseppe Getto and Huatong Sun. *SPECIAL ISSUE DESCRIPTION* Cultural diversity has been embraced as a core value by many companies in today’s increasingly globalized and multicultural workplace. Meanwhile, the design, implementation, evaluation, distribution, and consumption of information products now happen more often on a global level. While a majority of companies are not designing global-ready products from the beginning, the most successful products usually traverse the local in favor of a global user base. Thus, global UX design is a common part of the work lives of many technical communicators (Quesenbery & Szuc, 2012; Schumacher, 2010; Sun, 2012). At a time when the roles of technical communicator and user experience designer have begun to blur in productive ways (Redish, 2010; Redish & Barnum, 2011), technical communicators have been making valuable contributions to the development of the UX field by bringing theory, research, and design techniques. At the same time, UX is becoming an essential skill set for technical communicators in a variety of industries. Indeed, today’s technical communicators are designers who employ information and communication technologies (ICTs) to transform our workplaces, our communities, and our society. As technology design moves towards more socially- and ethically-oriented approaches, technical communicators are playing an important role in cultivating cultural humility (Tervalon & Murray-Garcia, 1998). This includes accounting for cultural differences and building a more inclusive and diverse workplace in an increasingly global society with our rhetorical expertise and empathy toward users. The trends described above are increasingly affecting the work we do as industry practitioners, academic researchers, university and college educators, and independent entrepreneurs in technical communication. It is time for us to reflect on our endeavors so far, to examine our surrounding cultures and structures at a new stage of globalization, and to develop better strategies, practices, and techniques to design more culturally appropriate information products in order to empower our users globally and locally. *POSSIBLE TOPICS FOR THIS SPECIAL ISSUE* The guest editors invite proposals for papers on applied research or theory, case histories/studies, tutorials, and/or annotated bibliographies that address issues such as the following: - How should technical communicators attend to issues related to user experience within the organizations they work in, and around the products they help deploy, in terms of collaboration, communication, complexity, and change (Redish, 2010)? - What can technical communicators teach their UX colleagues about cross-cultural and international communication and product deployment? - How should technical communicators work as user advocates to develop more culturally sensitive design and research methods to address the digital divide between the global north and south? - What expertise do technical communicators bring to informing innovative practices of work and design to develop a more diverse workplace and a more heterogeneous society? - How do political, legal, economic, and/or technological issues affect the ways that information products are deployed within local cultures? - How do cultural differences relating to intellectual property and copyright affect technical communication practices – particularly practices involving globally distributed teams? *SUBMISSION GUIDELINES* Proposals should be no more than 400 words in length.
