CFP: Special issue of Social Media + Society – Infancy Online
by Tama Leaver 02 Mar '16

02 Mar '16

Dear colleagues, Special Issue of Social Media + Society http://www.sagepub.com/journals/Journal202332 Infancy Online Eds Tama Leaver (Curtin University) and Bjorn Nansen (University of Melbourne) >From the sharing of ultrasound photos on social media onward, the capturing and communicating of babies’ lives online is an increasingly ordinary and common part of everyday digitally mediated life. Online affordances can facilitate the instantaneous sharing and joys of a first smile, first steps and first word spoken to globally distributed networks of family, friends and publics. Equally, from pregnancy tracking apps to baby cameras hidden inside cuddly toys, infants are also subject to an unprecedented intensification of surveillance practices. Reflecting both of these contexts, there is a growing set of questions about the presence, participation and politics of infants in online networks. This special issue seeks to explore these questions in terms of the online spaces in which infants are present; the forms of online participation enabled for and curated on behalf of infants, and the range of political implications raised by infants’ digital data and its traces, for both their present and future lives. Ideally papers will focus on the impact of digital technologies and networked culture on pre-birth, birth and the early years of life, along with related changes and challenges to parenthood and similar domains. Possible areas of focus include, but are by no means limited to: • Social media and infant presence and profiles • Cultural and national specificities of infant media use and presence • Digital media in the everyday lives of young children • The app economy, and capture of infant attention • “Mommy blogs,” and online curation • Identity and impression management • Ethics, persistence and the right to be forgotten • Geographies of infant media use • Infant interfaces and hardware • Cultural responses to parenting, “oversharing”, privacy and surveillance • Erasure of maternal bodies in digitising infancy • Apps and services targeting infants as a consumer market Abstracts of 300 words should be submitted to both Tama Leaver t.leaver(a)curtin.edu.au and Bjorn Nansen nansenb(a)unimelb.edu.au by Friday, 1 April. Where appropriate, please nominate an author for correspondence. On the basis of these short abstracts, invitations to submit full papers (of no more than 8000 words) will then be sent out by 15 April 2016. Full papers will be due by 1 July 2016, and will undergo the usual Social Media + Society review procedure. Please note that an invitation to submit a full paper for review does not guarantee paper acceptance. -- Dr Tama Leaver Senior Lecturer in Internet Studies Faculty of Humanities, MCCA, Curtin University GPO Box U1987 Perth WA Australia 6845 Ph: (+61 8) 9266 1258 Fax: (+61 8) 9266 3166 Email: t.leaver(a)curtin.edu.au Web: www.tamaleaver.net Twitter: @tamaleaver CRICOS Provider Code: 00301J (WA) 02637B (NSW)

Consortium for the Science of Sociotechnical Systems summer research institute
by Haythornthwaite, Caroline 01 Mar '16

01 Mar '16

For doctoral students and early career faculty. For questions, please contact Steve Sawyer (ssawyer(a)syr.edu<mailto:ssawyer@syr.edu>). The Consortium for the Science of Sociotechnical Systems (CSST) Calls for Participation in the 2016 Summer Research Institute When: 27 June to 1 July, 2016 Where: Skamania Lodge, Stevenson WA (one hour east of Portland, OR) To learn more about the venue, see: http://www.skamania.com<http://www.skamania.com/>. Deadline: Apply by 29 March, 2016, notifications by end of April, 2016 Personal health and well-being; open innovation, eScience, and citizen science; co-production, open source, and new forms of work; cultural heritage and information access; energy management and climate change; civic hacking, engagement and government; disaster response; cybersecurity and privacy; education and learning – these are just a few problem domains where effective design and robust understanding of complex sociotechnical systems are critical. To meet these challenges, a trans-disciplinary community has come together, drawing in scholars from intellectual communities such as CSCW, HCI, social computing, organization studies, information visualization, social informatics, sociology, information systems, medical informatics, computer science, ICT for development, education, learning science, journalism, and political science. Through Summer Research Institutes, extended workshops, preconference workshops, and other activities, this community of researchers from academia and industry has developed a strong focus on problems and opportunities arising from the interplay of social and technological systems that span individuals, groups, organizations, and societies. For 2016, we are delighted to have commitments from the following scholars who will serve as mentors. We anticipate that several other scholars will join this group: Jenna Burrell (Berkeley) Sue Fussell (Cornell) Tom Erickson (IBM) Erik Johnston (Arizona) Carsten Oesterlund (Syracuse) John Sherry (Intel) Magy Seif El-Nasr (Northeastern) Lynnette Yarger (Penn State) The 2016 Summer Research Institute builds on and extends this tradition to strengthen and expand this diverse community by bringing together graduate students, post-doctoral students, faculty, and other researchers in three groups: Doctoral students, post-doctoral students, pre-tenure faculty, and early career researchers – Mentoring, peer networking, and skill-building tutorials will help doctoral students, post-doctoral students, pre-tenure faculty, and early career researchers identify substantive ways that the theories, approaches, and tools within the larger community can advance their work with the design and study of sociotechnical systems. Emerging multi-disciplinary research teams – Groups of researchers seeking to develop cross-disciplinary collaborations will work with mentors to refine problem statements and research goals; connect with collaborators with complementary skills and interests; and create actionable research agendas and funding proposals. Preference will be given to groups interested in designing and studying sociotechnical systems that address societal grand challenges such as (but not limited to) healthcare; energy management and climate change; cybersecurity and privacy; education and learning; disaster response; technology development and innovation; economic development and work; and civic engagement and participation. Research infrastructure development teams – Groups of researchers interested in creating computational or analytic tools, data resources, training materials, or other infrastructure to support the design and study of sociotechnical systems will come together to work on new challenges. These infrastructure “hackathon” sessions will result in community resources such as use cases, prototypes, draft materials, and deployable systems. Applying for CSST 2016 Summer Research Institute We encourage applications from all academic, industry, NGO, and public sector organizations worldwide. To apply for the 2015 Summer Research Institute, select the group that best fits your needs and situation: Doctoral students, post-doctoral students, pre-tenure faculty, and early career researchers should send their CV and a short (up to 300 words) response to the question “How does/will your work advance our ability to design and understand critical sociotechnical systems?” Include three relevant references to situate your work within the larger research community. Doctoral students should have completed their dissertation proposal prior to attending and should seek a letter of recommendation from their advisor/department chair indicating their expected graduation date as well as how the CSST Summer Research Institute will advance their scholarship. Emerging multi-disciplinary research teams should apply as a group, sending their CVs and a short (up to 500 words) response to these questions: “What is the research focus/problem domain? What types of activities/studies are needed to engage that domain? How will pursuing this agenda help advance our ability to design and understand critical sociotechnical systems?” Include references and potential funding sources, if known, to situate the proposal within the larger research community. Your team may have from three to six people. Preference will be given to cross-institutional teams in which junior/mid-career researchers play significant leadership roles. Research infrastructure development teams should apply as a group, sending their CVs and a short (up to 500 words)) response to these questions: “What is the problem you are seeking to address? What will you do to address that problem? How will creating these technologies, tools, materials or infrastructure improve our ability to design and understand critical sociotechnical systems?” Include references to examples from other domains, if possible, to situate your proposal. Your team may have from three to six people from multiple disciplines and institutions. Lodging, meals, and other onsite costs will be covered for all Summer Research Institute participants. Limited travel support is available, if needed, for participants from US institutions (with preference given to doctoral and post-doctoral students). To be considered for all available financial support you should provide the following information when you apply: * What college or university do you attend? * What is your primary department affiliation? Send your application materials to Summer Research Institute Co-Director Steve Sawyer at ssawyer(a)syr.edu<mailto:diane.bailey@ischool.utexas.edu> by 29 March, 2016. The CSST Summer Research Institute Advisory Group will review applications beginning 2 April, 2016 using the following criteria: * Clear articulation of the hoped-for contribution to the theory, practice, or design of sociotechnical systems * Likelihood of Summer Research Institute participation providing significant practical benefit for the individual/team * Contribution to a balanced and diverse group of participants The number of participants we select will depend on the available funding and the fit between applicants’ interests and CSST goals. We expect to share out invitations by late April, 2016. For more information about the Summer Research Institute, contact the Steve Sawyer (ssawyer(a)syr.edu<mailto:ssawyer@syr.edu>). For information about the broader community of researchers interested in design and study of sociotechnical systems, see: CSST (www.sociotech.net<http://www.sociotech.net/>), the “Researchers of the Socio-Technical” Facebook group, or the CSST listserv (csst(a)listserv.syr.edu<mailto:csst@listserv.syr.edu>).

by Jean Burgess 29 Feb '16

29 Feb '16

Dear colleagues, I’m forwarding this CFP at the request of the organizers – please email the address below directly with any questions. Best regards Jean YouTube Conference: Call for Papers 23/4 September 2016, Middlesex University, The Burroughs, Hendon, London. Keynote speaker: Professor Jean Burgess Please send an abstract of 350 words plus a short bio of 100 words for single papers or 500 words and individual bios for group panels by email attachment to youtube(a)mdx.ac.uk<mailto:youtube@mdx.ac.uk>. Deadline for receipt of abstracts is 4 April 2016. YouTube has just passed its tenth birthday and it is timely to review not only how it has changed in that time, but also its wider influence. By focusing on YouTube as a platform we want to draw together research that is distributed across disciplines to help cross-fertilise knowledge about YouTube and its users, and to identity the research questions and methods that best capture its ever-expanding reach, impact and significance. We plan to include a panel of industry insiders to offer insights into possible futures in the light of current developments alongside the academic papers which we now invite you to propose. Keynote Address Professor Burgess will consider how YouTube and the broader online video environment have changed in the past decade, and what its competing futures look like. She will also discuss how we might learn to recognise such patterns of change empirically, and the key methodological approaches to studying the co-evolution of proprietary digital media platforms and their cultures of use over time. Possible questions to address (but not limited to these): * How has the institutionalisation of YouTube changed its nature? * Has YouTube accelerated processes of media convergence and transformation? * What is the changing relationship of television to YouTube? * How have production techniques and practices developed as the platform matured? * What communities of practice have been influential in the development of YouTube norms? * How has the development of new aesthetic forms been enabled by YouTube? * What innovations in performance and modes of address can be detected on YouTube? * To what degree do YouTube’s affordances operate as a social medium? * What new forms of celebrity and fandom have emerged on YouTube and why? * What wider social, cultural and political changes can be attributed to YouTube’s influence? * Why do we need to regulate the corporate power of YouTube’s owners Google? * Is YouTube a positive space for self realisation and expression of marginalised identities? * How do concerns over data harvesting and privacy apply to YouTube? * How have conflicts over rights affected the monetization of YouTube activities? * What potential does YouTube have as a repository of curated archives? * What are the genres that have thrived on YouTube and what wider significance does this have? (e.g. education, journalism, advertising and marketing, campaigning and propaganda, entertainment, documentary, drama, comedy and parody, how to ...) * Is the development of specific apps for Music, Kids and Gaming a significant new trend? * What research methods are used to study YouTube? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Conference organisation team: * Professor Jane Arthurs * Dr Alessandro Gandini * Dr Paul Kerr * Nicola Skinner

Internet & social media curriculum and materials for first-year university students
by Kevin R. Guidry 29 Feb '16

29 Feb '16

Colleagues, This is a little bit different from the research- and publication-focused questions that are often asked here but it may be interesting to some of you: If you could design a few relatively short exercises focused on "responsible use of the internet and other social media" for all (18-21 year old) undergraduate students at a university, what would you do? I'm on an ad hoc committee formed by my university's Faculty Senate to examine and revise the First-Year Seminar (FYS) courses that all University of Delaware undergraduate students are required to take. One of the specific items that the senate has mandated be included in every FYS course is "responsible use of the internet and other social media" so we have to figure out how faculty from any discipline can responsibly and effectively address this topic with first-year students. We've drafted the following student learning outcomes: 1. Describe principles and specific examples of ways the Internet and social media can be used to both help and harm others 2. Demonstrate effective ways to responsibly use social media to positively engage with others and portray oneself with authenticity There are many other important topics and skills addressed in these courses so the time available to focus on these specific outcomes is limited. I think that if we aim to keep our recommended curricula to less than 60 minutes of in-class time then the faculty who teach these courses are very likely to adopt our curricula and materials. Given the immense variations in resources, expertise, interest, and nearly everything else across the ~100 sections of the courses that fulfill this requirement, creating curricula and materials that address these outcomes is quite daunting. However, it's also very exciting given the potential impact since this would reach nearly all of the approximately 18,000 undergrad students at our university. We're very focused on basing our curricula and materials on empirical knowledge rather than personal opinion or experience. I'd very much appreciate any specific or general thoughts, recommendations, or resources you'd be willing to share! Kevin
