Seeking Literature Help
by Bahtiyar Kurambaev 27 Feb '16

27 Feb '16

Hello All, I was wondering if fellows here would be able to suggest me some current/recent literature about self-censorship in the context of social media. I am designing a study to examine self-censorship among social media users in the context of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). As noted by Dr. Eric Freedman (Michigan State University) that scholars barely scratched the surface of studying the former Soviet Union Central Asian countries. I have located some publications only. Would greatly appreciate for any help! Thanks Bahtiyar Kurambaev

Dear all, If you have some time on March 8 and happen to be in Brussels, our work on Big Open Legal Data (in EU) (http://www.openlaws. eu/?p=3260) could be of interest to you. The concept of the EU Project openlaws.eu is to bring stakeholders in the area of legal information together in order to provide better free and open access to justice in the EU and its Member States. Building on open data and open collaboration between public bodies, legal professionals, businesses, citizens, publishers, universities and NGOs may lead to an entirely new environment for providing, accessing and understanding legal information. Re: [Air-L] Please Cite Women Academics

Janet Sternberg’s point that people don’t search carefully and therefore miss key references means we need to think about how to make our research searchable - we need to use the most likely search terms in titles and abstracts of our publications. The first time I was recommended to do this was in 2014, and the publisher said that deliberate use of likely search terms makes a huge difference in how many people actually find books and book chapters. This is a rather different way of thinking about how to title academic work than we are used to, but one we should definitely be aware of. Of course, we should also teach our students to search better, using related terms and seeing what is referenced by other scholars on the topic. Also: we should all deliberately make sure to cite women and people of colour in all our work. For the last few years, I have carefully looked at my references as I write, and if there isn’t a pretty even gender balance, I search harder to find women writing about the topic. I use Google Scholar most, but I also ask other women in related areas if they know of other women I should be aware of. I have ALWAYS found more women when I specifically search, and they are usually doing fabulous stuff that has been really helpful to my own work. And often they do not pop up when you first start to explore an area. Not digging deeper means missing out on really valuable work. gender

Thanks everyone for the helpful (though depressing) pointers. I've also wondered too about syllabus/syllabi and if anyone has studied gender and courses. I am currently the undergraduate program director for my dept right now and I approve courses that students take outside of McGill and do so by judging the syllabi. I always count female vs male authors/academics and it is always deeply lopsided. It is all of course all very informal but it is rather consistent. by Tama Leaver 26 Feb '16

26 Feb '16

Hi Everyone, Michele Willson and I are delighted to announce that our collection *Social, Casual and Mobile Games: The Changing Gaming Landscape* has been released by Bloomsbury Academic. Here’s a quick blurb, the contents and contributors: Social, casual and mobile games, played on devices such as smartphones, tablets, or PCs and accessed through online social networks, have become extremely popular, and are changing the ways in which games are designed, understood, and played. These games have sparked a revolution as more people from a broader demographic than ever play games, shifting the stereotype of gaming away from that of hardcore, dedicated play to that of activities that fit into everyday life. *Social, Casual and Mobile Games* explores the rapidly changing gaming landscape and discusses the ludic, methodological, theoretical, economic, social and cultural challenges that these changes invoke. With chapters discussing locative games, the new freemium economic model, and gamer demographics, as well as close studies of specific games (including *Candy Crush Saga, Angry Birds*, and *Ingress*), this collection offers an insight into the changing nature of games and the impact that mobile media is having upon individuals and societies around the world. Contents 1. Social networks, casual games and mobile devices: the shifting contexts of gamers and gaming / Tama Leaver and Michele Willson *Part I: The (New?) Gaming Landscape* 2. Book launch and industry public panel: Media and International Education (15/03/2016)
by Dr Esther Chin 26 Feb '16

26 Feb '16

This public event presents a new perspective on migration and media based on interview research with Singaporean university students in Melbourne. It brings together stakeholders in the media industry and international education sector who are influencers among Singaporean students in Australia, to discuss the key issues that arise with the ongoing transformation of media and internationalisation of education, with particular reference to the case of Singaporean students in Australia. This event is open to the public. University students (local and international, Singaporean and non-Singaporean) and staff are especially welcome. EVENT PROGRAM 1. Brief summary of newly released book Migration, Media, and Global-Local Spaces (Palgrave Macmillan, Feb 2016) and presentation of results of interviews with Singaporean university students in Melbourne [by Dr Esther Chin, Author and Lecturer in Media and Communications, Swinburne University of Technology] 2. Endorsement of book [by Assoc Prof Karen Farquharson, Associate Dean (Research & Engagement) and Associate Professor Sociology, Swinburne University of Technology] 3. Book launch [by Prof Jason Bainbridge, Chair of Media and Communication, Swinburne University of Technology] 4. Industry public panel Speakers include: - Karen Poh [awarded Victoria's Multicultural Awards for Excellence 2015; Founder and editor-in-chief of MELD Magazine; International student engagement consultant to the Victorian Government’s Study Melbourne Student Centre (SMSC)] - Diane Leow, Digital Producer, Channel NewsAsia Other speakers TBC What is the book Migration, Media, and Global-Local Spaces about? This book explores how we define our social spaces in a world of globalization, cultural diversity, and media convergence. It invites us to consider how each of us relates to multiple people and places worldwide through migration and media. Critiquing our focus on nation, state, and particular countries of origin and settlement, this book offers a new conceptual approach to study contemporary migration and media. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Singaporean university students in Melbourne, Australia, this book details how we organize our social relations into diverse configurations of global and local spaces. This book aims to help university students, researchers, and members of the public to think more critically about how we develop our mental maps of the world, experience the migration of others and ourselves, and shape our media environments. What do experts in media and social science research think about this book? "As migration is one of the key themes of the networked 21st century, this book makes a timely and critical contribution to our understanding of communication across diverse migration processes. Esther Chin offers a much needed theoretical approach which allows us to assess the new dense relationships between communication and mobility, creating new spaces for civic identity beyond the nation-state. Without a doubt, the book sets the agenda for a new field in transnational communication." - Ingrid Volkmer, Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Communications, University of Melbourne, Australia "This fine book provides fresh insights into two defining global dynamics of the twenty-first century: migration and media. With a keen theoretical intelligence, Esther Chin greatly advances our understanding of how contemporary social and mobile media undergird people's need to inhabit a plurality of social spaces, creating distinctive 'cartographies of the social'. Essential reading that will equally require us to rethink migration and the place(s) of media." - Gerard Goggin, Professor of Media and Communications, University of Sydney, Australia "This book provides a novel and innovative spatial analysis of migration, where the spaces are mediated, local, and global. It delivers a nuanced and compelling account of how migrants experience their lives, where the global and local shape the social spaces they inhabit. Esther Chin shows how media and spaces interact in a process of 'glocal cosmopolitanism', a concept which aims to move beyond nations and states to capture the interconnected globalised world we now inhabit." - Karen Farquharson, Associate Dean (Research & Engagement) and Associate Professor Sociology, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia How can I access this book? Hi all, I am posting this very interesting blog post on behalf of its author Meryl Alper (who is changing email addresses and can't post here right now). It raises all sorts of vital questions about the erasure of women's academic work in tech reporting. We think it is particularly important to research internet policies in countries, which are at the borders of large geopolitical systems. At the periphery of the global system, internet policy is often not so strongly institutionalised as a result of which human rights norms are more in flux. At this workshop, we want to take a closer look at internet polices in the Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. Torn between two large geopolitical block, those six countries are very vulnerable to the growing mistrust between Brussels and Moscow. Strong trade and investment links to both Russia and Europe force them to make decisions, which can be politically hard and economically costly. Internet policy is one of the areas most affected by competing human rights discourses and trade interests. Our working hypothesis is that geopolitics will affect how Internet policy is developed, but can be mitigated by other economic or social factors, such as the strength of actors from private sector or civil society. This workshop is organized by the Centre for the Internet and Human Rights in collaboration with the B/ORDERS IN MOTION Centre, both at European University Viadrina. CIHR is a vibrant hub for academic research about technology and society at Viadrina. Our goal is to inform current public and academic debates by producing high-quality research grounded in theory and empirical data. UMAP is the successor to the biennial User Modeling (UM) and Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-based Systems (AH) conferences that were merged in 2009. It is sponsored by ACM SIG CHI and SIG WEB, and organized under the auspices of User Modeling Inc. ACM UMAP 2016 covers a wide variety of research areas where adaptation may be applied. This include (but is in no way limited to) a number of domains in which researchers are engendering significant innovations based on advances in user modeling and adaptation: recommender systems; adaptive educational systems; intelligent user interfaces; eCommerce; advertising; digital humanities; social networks; personalized health; entertainment, and many more. Key Areas: UMAP 2016 will explore, study and shape a broad range of dimensions faced by modern user adaptive systems, covering the following Key Areas chaired by leading researchers. User Modelling for Recommender Systems (Area Chairs: Alexander Felfernig & Pasquale Lops) - Semantic recommenders - Social recommenders - User Experience, Explanations, Trust, Control - Context-aware recommender systems - Conversational recommender systems - Implicit and explicit user feedback - Preference elicitation - Machine learning for recommender systems - Case studies of real-world implementations Adaptive & Personalized Educational Systems (Area Chairs: Antonija Mitrovic & Kalina Yacef) - Learner modeling - Intelligent tutoring systems - Adaptive and personalized learning support - Collaborative and group learning - Emerging environments such as MOOCs and educational games - Educational data mining and learning analytic modeling techniques - Learning at scale Modeling affective, motivational, and metacognitive aspects of learning Case studies of real-world implementations Personalization in the Social Web & Crowdsourcing Era (Area Chairs: Alessandro Bozzon & Harith Alani) - Data-driven approaches and big data techniques - Deep learning for personalization with social and crowd-generated data - Social network analysis - Modeling individuals, groups, and communities - Engagement & sustainability for personalization - User awareness and control - Privacy, perceived security, and trust - Adaptations based on personality, society, and culture - Mining of social media and crowd-generated data - Human computation and machine intelligence for personalization - Harnessing wisdom of the crowd for personalization - Case studies of real-world implementations Adaptive, Intelligent, & Multimodal User Interfaces (Area Chairs: Julien Epps & Hatice Gunes) - Multimodal user models - Natural interaction (speech, language, gestures) - Brain-computer interfaces - Adaptive information visualization - Adaptive hypermedia systems - Adaptive collaboration support - User modeling for special needs - Case studies of real-world implementations Architectures, techniques & methodologies for UMAP (Area Chairs: Stephan Weibelzahl & Mihaela Cocea) - Models of perception, action, cognition, and affect - Neurobiological and physiological models - User experience - Ongoing continuous modeling - Lifewide modeling - Data-driven approaches - Non-standard database representations (networks, graphs) - Sensor networks - Handheld and mobile devices - Standards and specifications - Interoperability, semantics - Evaluation methodologies and metrics - Case studies of real-world implementations Submission Categories and Review Process UMAP 2016 will include high quality peer-reviewed papers related to the above key areas. We welcome original, and principled research papers addressing both the theory and practice of UMAP and papers showcasing innovative use of UMAP and exploring the benefits and challenges of applying UMAP technology in real-life applications and contexts. Authors will be asked to indicate one or more key areas (from the five listed below) at the time of submission. Submissions should be made into one of two categories - long and short papers as defined below. Long papers (8 pages + references) should present original reports of substantive new research techniques, findings, and applications of UMAP. They should place the work within the field and clearly indicate innovative aspects. Research procedures and technical methods should be presented in sufficient detail to ensure scrutiny and reproducibility. Results should be clearly communicated and implications of the contributions/findings for UMAP and beyond should be explicitly discussed. Short papers (4 pages + references) should present original and highly promising research or applications. Merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance rather than maturity, extensive technical validation, and user studies, although some form of validation is desirable. Maintaining the high quality and impact of the UMAP series, each paper will be single-blind reviewed by three program committee members and meta-reviewed to present the reviewersí consensual view; the review process will be coordinated by the program chairs in collaboration with the corresponding area chairs. Separation of long and short papers will be strictly enforced so papers will not compete across categories but within each category. Papers that receive high scores and are considered promising by reviewers, but didnít make the acceptance cut, will be invited to be resubmitted as posters and/or demos. Submission Details and Publication: Page limits: Long papers - 8 pages + references; Short pages: 4 pages + references. Note that reference do not count towards page limits. Papers that exceed the page limits or formatting guidelines will be returned without review. Submissions should be single-blinded, i.e. the authors can have their names in the paper.
