Prospective candidates are expected to have done graduate work in (Post-Doctoral position), or be interested in studying (PhD positions), one or more of the following areas: * Economics * Behavioral Economics or Behavioral Decision Research * Experimental Economics or Experimental Psychology * Privacy * Human Computer Interaction Successful candidates will work in areas related to the economics or/and the behavioral economics of privacy, and collaborate with Professor Alessandro Acquisti. They may also interact with other members of CMU CBDR (Center for Behavioral and Decision Research) lab and of CMU PeeX (Privacy Economics Experiments) Lab, as well as with other CMU students and professors, in an interdisciplinary environment that includes social scientists and technologists. Successful candidates will be expected to conduct original research and publish their results in top-ranked journals and conferences. Social media tools have helped break down geographical barriers that once restricted communication and have led to an explosion of e-participation, virtual presence, and online communities. Professional benefits of social media include sharing of information, publicity, and giving and receiving support and advice. Consumers have become increasingly empowered to exert an influence on brands through online communities and businesses are able to acquire rapid feedback and garner insight into individual preferences without observer effects. Analysis of social media content via automated techniques and systems can also help to safeguard society from organized crime but such uses remain a delicate issue. With seemingly endless benefits it is easy to overlook the disadvantages of social media, which are an increasingly important consideration as social media platforms continue to proliferate. Social media has facilitated a loss of ownership and control of content as private, public and institutional domains increasingly overlap. There is a need for careful balancing of professionalism and freedom of speech, to ensure that posts do not cause offence or harm reputations. Other drawbacks include time pressure, plagiarism, misrepresentation, addiction, and negative psychological consequences. While providing a means to protect public safety, social media also provides a means of threatening it and enabling new forms of cyber-crime. This conference aims to bring together a variety of disciplines and a community for the advancement of knowledge regarding the adoption, use, impact, and potential of social media. Dear colleagues, As part of my thesis research, I have made a series of interviews with a few european researchers in the field of digital humanities (especially sociology, design and media studies), about the uses of visualisation and visual data analysis in digital research methods and to public debate. I think these interviews could be an interesting read for people who work in similar subjects. So, now that I've defended the thesis, it could be nice to publish them in small and free e-book. Do you suggest any specific publishing or distributing platform? Or should I just make a small site and offer the files in different versions for download? I will appreciate any suggestions or ideas. Call for Papers: Researching disinformation within hybrid media ecologies. Where we are and where we are going (AOIR 2016 Panel)

Hi everyone, Laura Iannelli, Luca Rossi, Augusto Valeriani and I are seeking panelists for an #AOIR2016 panel on "Researching Disinformation Within Hybrid Media Ecologies. Where We Are And Where We Are Going" (tentative title). --------- Panel description On friday November 13, a group of coordinated attacks hit Paris causing more than 130 victims. The frantic moments following the first fragmented news, the spread of rumors and the wide media coverage of the following days, highlighted all the strength and fragility of an hybrid media system in which new and old media logics compete and integrate. During the hours following the attacks, we have witnessed the spread of testimonies published on social media and widely diffused by legacy media, we have observed the emergence of forms of cooperation aimed at supporting the search for the missing and we have participated in the ritual of collective mourning with the hashtag #PrayforParis. At the same time, however we have also read numerous reports that, although eventually proved to be false, have contributed to shape the representation of those events. Contemporary information ecologies, by simplifying processes of production and circulation of news, could also facilitate the diffusion of false information and/or unverified news. In this context, new digital elites (i.e. bloggers, social media power users etc.), legacy media actors and non-elites are still in search of a strategy for real time verification and debunking. Previous studies emphasized the importance of echo chamber effects and "confirmation bias" (the tendency to consider true information that confirms what we already believe true) as the cognitive process that, at the same time, makes misinformation easy to spread and difficult to debunk. Peer networks play an important role as a source of confirmation or disconfirmation of rumors. As a result, homophilic and polarized communities represent a fertile ground for disinformation. Recent studies also pointed out the combined effect of "confirmation bias" and online communities often characterized by a high degree of homogeneity. Additional multidisciplinary research is needed to enlighten changes and continuities in the participatory processes that invest the media sphere and more specifically: - to understand the diverse forms of disinformation and their effects on the quality of contemporary democracies; - to explore the diverse existing practices of fact-checking and debunking in the disinformation cycle; - to analyse values and norms of newer and older dominant media companies, their policies and decisions on what contents and actors can become popular and can have voice in the hybrid media system; - to explain the relations among the broader participation of non-elite media actors in the production of misinformation and disinformation and the other forms of political participation involving citizens in contemporary democratic societies. --------- To be considered for this panel, we would need the AOIR-standard 1200-word abstract by *February 15, 2016* sent to fabio.giglietto(a)uniurb.it.
