PhD Thesis - Virtually Real:Being in Cyberspace
by Morgan Leigh 04 Mar '16

04 Mar '16

Greetings, I have just uploaded my PhD Thesis to Academia and thought I would let all the members of this list know about it. As far as I know no one has published a monograph that is an autoethnography in Second Life. The full thesis is available at https://www.academia.edu/22669120/Virtually_Real_Being_In_Cyberspace A book will be available shortly. I'd appreciate expressions of interest for copies of the book as I am self publishing and need to gauge how many copies to print. Abstract This work is an autoethnographic account of my search for the sacred in cyberspace. The research was conducted in the virtual world Second Life, and in particular in two role play communities set in Ancient Egypt. Virtual worlds are often criticised as unreal, as just games. Here I explore the ontological status of virtual worlds, recognising the priority for their inhabitants of lived experience over purely rational assessments. This research is unique and important as no monograph of role play communities in Second Life has yet been published, and yet tens of millions of people spend an increasing amount of time in virtual and game worlds, often preferring them to the meatspace world. I recount my experiences with ritual in cyberspace, describing sacred virtual space, and its relationship to sacred meatspace from a Pagan perspective. I compare two initiation rituals, and describe how one produced the perception of sacred space, in both meatspace and the virtual world, while the other remained only a role play. Finally I analyse an opening of the mouth ritual to reveal the way we make sense of our own realities by building on and remixing what came before us, and to argue that there are many truths and that objectivity is impossible in the human condition. This is the story of how I became one with my avatar, despite my best efforts not to do so. Themes of the fun economy, remix culture, and copyright inform the analysis in the work. I explore Castronova's concept of the fun economy, the amalgam of work, play and education which characterises twenty first century life in the developed world. Freedom and fun are the motivators for the inhabitants of virtual worlds and the bounds of these are defined by copyright. This issue is examined through the lens of the Second Life permissions system and the work of Lessig and his concept of remix culture. I argue that remix culture has permeated the entirety of human history, giving examples from ancient Egypt through to the present day, and consider the implications for human culture if restrictive copyright laws continue to dominate legal frameworks, despite their failure to achieve their desired ends. Exploring our future in cyberspace though Kurzweil's concept of the singularity, I consider the possibilities of his predicted combination of the worlds of meatspace and the virtual. Regards, Dr. Morgan Leigh

Correction: Bellwether lecture - Oxford - March 9 2016 - The power of the crowd: Combining open science, citizen science and the internet to generate reproducible knowledge
by Brent Mittelstadt 03 Mar '16

03 Mar '16

Apologies for the double post, the registration link has been fixed. A very interesting talk next week by Chris Chambers on his experiences with citizen science at The Guardian. Hosted at the Oxford Internet Institute. The power of the crowd: Combining open science, citizen science and the internet to generate reproducible knowledge Chris Chambers 9 March 2016 @ 14:00 University of Oxford Please register on Eventbrite<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bellwether-lecture-the-power-of-the-crowd-co…> In this lecture Chris will discuss the opportunities and challenges provided by mass internet-based data collection and how, in combination with open science practices, this approach can help usher in a new era of robust scientific research. He will focus in particular on two of my current projects: an upcoming research platform we are launching later this year in partnership with the Guardian as part of a European Research Council project on eating behaviour, and the use of citizen science to perform a mass consultation of MPs about a new service for supporting evidence-based policy. Both projects utilise open science practices such as study pre-registration and open data archiving, ensuring that findings are transparent, reproducible, and reusable to other researchers and the public. He will also discuss challenges with this approach, including the ethics of consent and unanticipated recruitment of vulnerable groups. About the Speaker Professor of cognitive neuroscience at the School of Psychology and Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre Chris Chambers is a professor of cognitive neuroscience at the School of Psychology and Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre. In addition to his core research focus in human self control, his interests include open science practices, the role of science in the media, and mechanisms for promoting evidence-based public policy. He also co-hosts the Guardian psychology blog, Head Quarters. call for internet researchers interested in peer-to-peer data sharing
by Zara Rahman 03 Mar '16

03 Mar '16

Hi all, Forwarding this for a colleague who is not on this list, but keen to be connected with internet researchers interested in peer-to-peer data sharing. Please get in touch with him directly (contact details below). Thanks! Zara -- TheDat project <http://dat-data.com/> is looking for partners for an EU grant consortium. The call we are responding to is http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h…. This specific call closes April 10th. We are a highly technical project that builds decentralized technologies for scientific reproducibility and data governance -- think BitTorrent and Git, but open source, and more secure. We have received two grants from the Sloan and Knight foundation. The project we want to pitch is to build a decentralized, peer to peer data sharing network for public interest datasets to ensure long term access to public funded scientific research data, open government data as well as improve data access speeds and availability. We want to hear from groups interested in this topic and who would consider joining our consortium. For a good consortium we need a research partner, for example, that focuses on Internet and data ethics. If you represent a group that would be interested, please email project lead Max Ogden at max(a)maxogden.com <mailto:max@maxogden.com> to start a discussion. -- Zara Rahman http://zararah.net | Twitter: @zararah
