additional pieces of bias against women in journalism
by Gabriella "Biella" Coleman 24 Feb '16

24 Feb '16

Hi all, I have heard back from some folks claiming that the case Meryl highlighted was not indicative of larger trends. I thought I would pass on a few pieces that do deal with the fact that the omission and invisibility of female voices in journalism and journalistic writing is not a sporadic occurrence but a systematic one. If others have good pieces on the topic, I would love to see them. http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/02/gender-diversity-jour… http://democracyjournal.org/magazine/31/closed-network/ http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/12/upshot/even-famous-female-economists-get-… All best, Gabriella -- Gabriella Coleman Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy Department of Art History & Communication Studies McGill University 853 Sherbrooke Street West Montreal, PQ H3A 0G5 http://gabriellacoleman.org/ 514-398-8572

This is already underway. Plenty of meat for telecom wonks! Spicing up the proceedings is the $500m of Wall St fines <http://www.capitalnewyork.com/article/albany/2015/01/8560363/cuomo-re-annou…> that Gov Cuomo has allotted to broadband upgrades. It's on a matching dollar basis, something that has caused some smaller ISPs to complain, claiming it discriminates on behalf of larger incumbents. There are no live captions, sorry, but NYS DPL promises a transcript by early next week. [image: livestream] <https://livestream.com/internetsociety/nydps/>On *Wednesday - Thursday February 24-25 2016* The *New York State Department of Public Service <http://www.dps.ny.gov/>* will hold a *Technical Conference <http://on.ny.gov/1OuP1UI>* in NYC to discuss their recent Telecommunications Study. CFP Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe, Special collection of Social Media + Society, edited by Koen Leurs and Kevin Smets
by Leurs, K.H.A. (Koen) 24 Feb '16

24 Feb '16

Dear colleagues, apologies for x-posting, and please distribute widely: Call for papers: Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe, Special collection of Social Media + Society, edited by Koen Leurs and Kevin Smets While it is increasingly observable that forced migration and digital connectivity are intertwined, there is a need for more in-depth, critical research into this topic, especially in the context of Europe. With this special collection of Social Media + Society, a high standing, peer reviewed, open-access journal published by Sage, we seek to bring together cutting-edge research on forced migration in(to) Europe and the way in which digital technologies and digital connectivity and in particular social media play a role in the lives of forced migrants. The collection aims not only to present empirical evidence for discussions about forced migration and digital connectivity, but also to offer new theoretical insights on the issue. Approaching forced migration as a complex societal, political and cultural phenomenon, we seek to consider different aspects of digital connectivity, such as the use of social media by migrants, activists and trolls, issues of affectivity, representation, materiality, mobility, solidarity, political economy and the communication industry, as well questions related to gender, race, sexuality, nation, class, geography and religion; identity; diaspora; media literacy; policy; legislation and human rights. The label forced migrants includes here asylum seekers, refugees, forced migrants, stranded migrants, left-behind children and child migrants as well internally displaced populations amongst others. We welcome scholars from the (digital) humanities and (computational) social sciences. Theoretical perspectives may include but are not limited to communication, media and cultural studies, HCI, postcolonial, feminist, critical race and intersectional approaches, critical ICT4D, and political economy. Empirical perspectives may include but are not limited to (virtual) ethnography, big data, digital methods, fieldwork, action-research, creative methods, mixed-methods, and survey-research. Contributions may address the following topics: * connected migrants in Europe * social media use in refugee camps and asylum seeker centres * forced migration and selfie citizenship * solidarity * transnational communication and affectivity * information scarcity * encapsulation & cosmopolitanization * differences and similarities different migrant groups (class, gender, race, age, generation, location) * digital migrant identities, self-representations and alternative migrant cartographies * migrant recruitment and radicalization online * digital deportability and algorithmic sorting * surveillance and tracking * migrant networked learning * migrant acculturation online * trolling, extremism and anti-migration protest online * political economy of migrant connectivity * digital communication rights * rethinking communication rights in Fortress Europe * securitization versus human rights: recentering European policy and legislation * ethical considerations and methodological reflections * digital diasporas * postcolonial digital humanities Please send a 1-page (ca. 500 words) abstract outlining the main objectives of your paper as well as its empirical/theoretical contributions to the topic of forced migration and digital connectivity to both k.h.a.leurs(a)uu.nl<mailto:k.h.a.leurs@uu.nl> and kevin.smets(a)uantwerpen.be<mailto:kevin.smets@uantwerpen.be> by 15 April 2016. Decisions by the editors to solicit full papers will be made in May 2016. The deadline for submitting full papers (8000 words all inclusive) is 7 December 2016. The contributions will be published as a Special Collection of the online, open-access, peer-reviewed journal Social Media + Society, published by Sage and edited by Prof. Zizi Papacharissi (http://sms.sagepub.com) Please contact the guest editors if you have any questions about this call for papers. Informal inquiries about possible topics, themes and proposals are also welcomed. The guest editors welcome contributions by established scholars as well as early career researchers. The special collection is developed in tandem with two events: 1) the symposium "Connected migrants: encapsulation or cosmopolitanism?" (http://www.knaw.nl/connected-migrants) taking place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 14-16 December 2016. The symposium is financed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. 2) two panels on "Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe", to be submitted to the Association of Internet Research annual conference, to be held in Berlin, Germany from 5-8 October, 2016. Key dates -15 April 2016: 1-page abstract + 150 word bio -May 2016: invitations for full papers after selection by guest editors -7 December 2016: first version of full papers (8000 words all inclusive) -Late 2017: anticipated publication date Rationale Daily, Europeans witness Syrian asylum seekers arriving on the beaches of Greek and Southern-Italian islands. TV news footage shows how freshly arrived migrants use smartphones to take selfies or use Skype to happily announce their safe arrival on European soil to loved ones elsewhere. In response, prejudicial discourses about migrants have centered on smartphones; for example, anti-immigrant politicians and various social media memes frame refugees who own 'luxury' smartphones as less deserving of asylum. Forced migrants, who are digitally connected, embody Europe's Janus-faced character in an age when advanced technologies are celebrated for increasing communication speed and economic prosperity. As a result of different conflicts worldwide, forced migration has become a major challenge for Europe. The enormous death toll of migrants at Europe's borders, the reintroduction of border controls within the Schengen Area, and the violence and hostility towards refugees and asylum seekers in several European countries published across various social media platforms all attest to the way in which the current influx of forced migrants is overturning European society and political structures. At the same time mainstream media have devoted significant attention to the situation of refugees along their migration routes in(to) Europe. Interestingly, these instances often included digital technologies as central anchoring points in the lives of refugees. Detailed reports were made of refugees using smartphones, keeping in touch with their relatives, or documenting their journey through social media. Other accounts, albeit less frequently, focused on the ways in which governments seek to deal with forced migration via digital technologies, for instance by making use of GPS tracking in smartphones, or by setting up online deterrence campaigns to discourage refugees to migrant to specific countries. About the guest-editors Koen Leurs is Assistant Professor in Gender and Postcolonial studies at the Graduate Gender Program, Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He obtained his PhD in 2012. He is a feminist internet researcher interested in multiculturalism, race, migration, diaspora and youth culture using mixed methods and ethnography. He has just completed a 2 year EU funded Marie Curie research project titled Urban Politics of London Youth Analyzed Digitally, at the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK. From February 2016 onwards he will work on a 3-year Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research funded research project 'Young connected migrants. Comparing digital practices of young asylum seekers and expatriates in the Netherlands'. See www.koenleurs.net<http://www.koenleurs.net>. Kevin Smets is assistant professor in Communication Studies at the Free University of Brussels, and a postdoctoral fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders. He obtained his PhD in Film Studies and Visual Culture at the University of Antwerp in 2013. Call for Participation: Archives Unleashed 2.0 - Web Archive Hackathon
by Matthew Weber 24 Feb '16

24 Feb '16

Folks, Please see the CFP below this message for information regarding an upcoming datathon. This is a great opportunity to engage with Web archive research, and to learn more about working with large-scale data. Funding is available for graduate students at US institutions. Regards, Matt ***Call for Participation*** Archives Unleashed 2.0: Web Archive Datahon Library of Congress, Washington DC 14 – 15 June 2016 Travel grants available for US-based graduate students; other travel funding may be available Applications due 15 March 2016 **This event is a follow-up to the Archives Unleashed datathon held in March at the University of Toronto Library. With generous funding from the National Science Foundation and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (Canada), we’ve been able to extend the datathon program, and are excited to bring this program to the Library of Congress.** The World Wide Web has a profound impact on how we research and understand the past. The sheer amount of cultural information that is generated and, crucially, preserved every day in electronic form, presents exciting new opportunities for researchers. Much of this information is captured within web archives. Web archives often contain hundreds of billions of web pages, ranging from individual homepages and social media posts, to institutional websites. These archives offer tremendous potential for social scientists and humanists, and the questions research may pose stretch across a multitude of fields. Scholars broaching topics dating back to the mid-1990s will find their projects enhanced by web data. Moreover, scholars hoping to study the evolution of cultural and societal phenomena will find a treasure trove of data in web archives. In short, web archives offer the ability to reconstruct large-scale traces of the relatively recent past. While there has been considerable discussion about web archive tools and datasets, few forums or mechanisms for coordinated, mutually informing development efforts have been created. This hackathon presents an opportunity to collaboratively unleash our web collections, exploring cutting-edge research tools while fostering a broad-based consensus on future directions in web archive analysis. This hackathon will bring together a small group of 20-30 participants to collaboratively develop new open-source tools and approaches to hackathon, and to kick-off collaboratively inspired research projects. Researchers should be comfortable with command line interactions, and knowledge of a scripting language such as Python strongly desired. By bringing together a group of like-minded scholars and programmers, we hope to begin building unified analytic production effort and to continue coalescing this nascent research community. At this event, we hope to converge on a shared vision of future directions in the use of web archives for inquiry in the humanities and social sciences in order to build a community of practice around various web archive analytics platforms and tools. Thanks to the generous support of the National Science Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the University of Waterloo’s Department of History, the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science and the University of Waterloo, and the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University, we will cover all meals and refreshments for attendees. We are also providing sample datasets for people to work on during the hackathon, or they are happy to use their own. Included datasets are: • the .gov web archive covering the American government domain • Canadian Political Parties and Political Interest Groups collection Those interested in participating should send a 250-word expression of interest and a CV to Matthew Weber (matthew.weber(a)rutgers.edu <mailto:matthew.weber@rutgers.edu>) by 15 March 2016 with “Archives Unleashed” in the subject line. This expression of interest should address the scholarly questions that you will be bringing to the hackathon, and what datasets you might be interested in either working with or bringing to the event. Applicants will be notified by 25 March 2016. We have a limited number of travel grants available for graduate students; preference will be given to those who have not participated in the Archives Unleashed program in the past, although we welcome returning participants. These grants can cover up to $750 in expenses. If you are in an eligible position, please indicate in your statement of interest that you would like to be considered for the travel grant. A letter of support from your graduate supervisor will also strengthen your application. All accepted papers must be presented as a talk at the conference with the option of also presenting a demo or video at the conference. Paper length must match the size of the contribution, and the same general review criteria hold for all papers. All papers will undergo the same review process and be published in the same way: all accepted submissions in this category will be included in the conference proceedings and we intend to publish through the ACM Digital Library. Authors are invited to submit high-quality original work to advance the field. Papers will be subject to blind peer reviewing and all identifying information about authors needs to be removed from the submitted manuscripts. Citations to own work must not be anonymous, but should be described in a way that does not reveal you as the author of the cited work. Submissions must be made using the Precision Conference System (PCS). We encourage authors strongly to submit a video figure to support and accompany their submission. The committee will choose the best to be part of a plenary session at the conference. WORKS-IN-PROGRESS (6 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format excluding references, poster presentation at the conference) Works-in-progress provide a unique opportunity for late-breaking results to be presented in a poster format. Accepted submissions will be presented as a poster at the conference. Posters papers will be lightly peer-reviewed and archived in the proceedings planned to be published in the ACM digital library. We encourage authors to submit a video figure to support their submission, and the committee will choose the best videos to be part of a plenary session at the conference. CHI PLAY STUDENT GAME COMPETITION (6 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format excluding references, interactive demonstration at the conference) The CHI PLAY Student Game Competition will provide a unique opportunity for students to showcase their interactive play systems and designs. Students will need to submit a video of their game as well as proof of student status (full-time or part-time, all levels up to Ph.D.). A jury panel will nominate the best submissions for an interactive presentation at the conference, where a panel of experts choose the winners. WORKSHOPS (6 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format, workshop at the conference) Workshops allow conference participants that share a common interest to deepen their knowledge and meet in an interactive hands-on learning and discussion environment. They provide great opportunities for community-building at CHI PLAY. Workshops should focus on a theme in one of CHI PLAY’s core areas mentioned above. We especially welcome workshops that bridge the gap between practitioner and researcher knowledge or between communities. Workshops should provide novel perspectives and generate ideas about player-computer interaction. If you are passionate about this field, please consider organizing a workshop. Workshops can independently from the conference result in special issues of journals, wikis, websites, or books. COURSES (4 pages in ACM SIGCHI format, course at the conference) Courses at CHI PLAY should allow participants to learn new hands-on knowledge about player-game interaction, development and evaluation. They are great opportunities for industry pros to teach their knowledge to an interested audience and allow interdisciplinary knowledge development between practitioners and researchers. If you work in game development and are eager to teach a workshop at CHI PLAY, we look forward to your submission. DEMOS/PLAY CHI PLAY offers a chance for game developers and researchers to showcase their commercial game or to deploy multiplayer social games at the conference. Please contact the DEMOS/PLAY chairs if you are interested in showcasing your game during the conference breaks. REVIEW PROCESS: All PAPERS We have selected a program committee of experts in human-computer interaction and game research to lead the formal review process. Once your paper is submitted as a blind manuscript in the correct format, our program committee and external reviewers will provide at least 3 high quality reviews (at least two from our PC members). The Associate Chair (AC) will contribute their own opinion about the paper and summarize the individual reviews, meta-reviewing the paper and providing advice to the authors regarding the rebuttal. A rebuttal is a chance to clarify any misconceptions that the reviewers might have about the paper. This is an opportunity for authors to rebut factual error in reviews or to answer questions asked by reviewers. Rebuttals are required to be written in a very short timeframe after the reviews are sent out. CHI PLAY rebuttals are 2500 characters in length. The PC and conference chairs will review and discuss all submitted rebuttals. The papers chairs will then deliberate in close communication with the committee members about the acceptance of papers. Authors will then be recommended to make certain changes before the camera-ready submission and acceptance might be tentative until those changes are included. At least one author of the paper must register for the conference and present the paper at the conference. CONFERENCE COMMITTEE CONFERENCE CHAIR Anna Cox, University College London, UK Zachary O. Research project: encryption for personal use
by Oltmann, Shannon M 23 Feb '16

23 Feb '16

Hello everyone! I am investigating people's use of (hard drive or email) encryption for day-to-day personal use (not just professional purposes), to learn more about how we conceptualize privacy. I want to ground discussions of privacy in actual practices by interviewing people from all walks of life who use encryption. If you use encryption in your personal life, please read more about my survey here http://go.uky.edu/oltmannlet . If you're willing to participate please contact me at shannon.oltmann(a)uky.edu.
