The purpose of this workshop is threefold: first, to chart the diversity of algorithmic technologies as well as their application, appropriation, use and presence in work practices; second, to probe analytic vocabularies that account for empirical diversity; third, to discuss implications for design that come out of our understandings of algorithms and the technologies through which they are enacted. HOW TO PARTICIPATE We invite participants to submit a brief 1-4 page position papers with their bio in any format. ===================================================================== the 6th Making Sense of Microposts Workshop (#Microposts2016) at WWW 2016 http://microposts2016.seas.upenn.edu 11/12th Apr 2016 ===================================================================== THEME: Big things come in small packages ------------------- Microposts – "information published on the Web that is small in size and requires minimal effort to publish" – remain a popular means for communicating information. Microposts include tweets (using plain text or with embedded links and objects); social network endorsement using Instagram hearts; check-ins via Facebook and Foursquare, pins on Pinterest; links to brief, pre-recorded and streaming video via Snapchat and Meerkat. Microblogging apps for the ubiquitous smartphone and other small, personal devices, which support capturing photos and short videos, allow these to accompany text or serve in themselves as the Micropost. Services such as those provided by WhatsApp, Viber, Snapchat, LINE and Saya, piggybacking on SMS/MMS and augmented with social media features, are also growing in popularity, especially in emerging markets where the Internet is often accessible mainly via mobile networks. Such services typically sync with desktop or web front-ends, allowing seamless switching between devices. Microposts are also used as a portal to other services, alerting users to, e.g., live video streams on Periscope and Meerkat. Individual Microposts typically focus on a single thought, message or theme, often written on the go or in the moment, as events transpire. Collectively, however, Microposts comprise a very large amount of heterogeneous data – a source of valued, collective intelligence about a range of topics that may be mined for a variety of end uses, including opinion mining and crowd tracking, emergency response and community services. The #Microposts workshops aim to continue to provide a forum to enable discussion and hence, improve understanding of the social and cultural phenomena that influence the publication and reuse of Microposts; to assess different approaches to gleaning the information content. Enabling the understanding and application of Microposts in various contexts requires techniques and tools that function at scale, and that are able to handle the very high rate of publication. Despite advances in tools to tackle the specific challenges inherent to Micropost data, applications and approaches for analysing Microposts still rely on third party text extraction tools. An important aim of the workshop is to promote formal evaluation of the accuracy of text extraction tools specifically for Micropost data, as opposed to more typical comparative assessment using corpora of well-formed, normal length, natural language documents. To address this issue, starting in 2013 the workshop hosted an information extraction challenge in which participants detected named entities typed with corresponding concepts. In 2014, the challenge was extended to require also the linking of entities extracted to relevant DBpedia sources. 2015 saw further extension that tested the accuracy and runtime efficiency of entrants' systems for entity extraction and linking. #Microposts2016 will consolidate the 2015 task and provide a base from which participants will deploy live systems. Evolution of the challenge each year addresses a current need of researchers and others who rely on the output of text extraction tools specifically built to support or adapted to Micropost data, and where reliability and computation time are important when dealing with large-scale datasets. TOPICS OF INTEREST ------------------- #Microposts2016 will focus on topics including, but not exclusive to, the three areas below: MAKING SENSE/UNDERSTAND – focusing on the human in Micropost data generation and analysis, we encourage submissions that look at understanding how situation and context drive individual and collective generation of Microposts, whether targeted at the general public, a specific person or other entity, e.g. a ruling government or a cause. We particularly encourage interdisciplinary work and that driven by research in Social & Computational Science and Information and Web Sciences, that lead to deeper understanding of Micropost content, and how this content influences the contribution of Micropost data to, among others: - Collective awareness - Education & citizen empowerment, data & citizen journalism - Civil action, media & politics - Political and polemical aspects of Microposts - Ethics, legal and privacy issues - Psychological profiling and psychological aspects of Micropost-based interaction - Cultural, generational and regional differences in access and use of Microposts - Humans as sensors - Impact of effortless posting and wearable devices on communication DISCOVER – The extraction of information content from Microposts and subsequent analysis contribute to the discovery of patterns and trends in the data. This information is key to further knowledge discovery and application, using a number of approaches including: - Emergent semantics - Data mining from Microposts - Opinion mining, sentiment and sentic analysis - Network analysis and community detection - Influence detection and social contagion modelling - Prediction approaches - Linking Microposts into the Web of Linked Data (i.e. entity extraction and URI disambiguation) APPLY – Applications papers and case studies describing systems that make use of Micropost data. This includes tools developed to support the generation and sharing of Microposts using a variety of devices and media, piggybacking where necessary on other communication methods, including SMS/MMS and even radio. Areas of interest include: - Collective intelligence, user profiling, personalisation & recommendation - Business analytics & market intelligence with particular attention to big data - Event & topic detection and tendency tracking - Microposts as a second screen to television, large screens and stages at public events - Geo-localised, Micropost-based services - Public consensus & citizen participation - Security, emergency response & health - Linking social and physical signals for, e.g., crowd tracking - Identification and use of geo-location information embedded in or attached to Microposts - Increasing importance of multilingual and non-English Microposts #Microposts2016 BEST PAPER AWARD -------------------------------------- The best paper award for the main track will be sponsored by the MK:Smart project (http://www.mksmart.org) with an award of £500. (COMPUTATIONAL) SOCIAL SCIENCES TRACK -------------------------------------- To foster collaboration between Computer Science and (Computational) Social Science, and continue to encourage contribution from the latter domain to improve on 'Making Sense of Microposts', we will include again a special track dedicated to Social Science papers and other related fields. The best paper award for this track will for the second time be sponsored by GESIS, Germany, with an award of €300. This track will be chaired by Katrin Weller (GESIS, Germany). We have also seen continued interest after publication of the results each year. We expect this to continue in 2016 with further extension of the challenge and with the provision of a base for the deployment of live systems. In line with the overall workshop goals, we envisage that the outcomes of the challenge will continue to advance work in the domains of named entity recognition and disambiguation, with a specific focus on function over the short length information snippets in Microposts. A detailed description of the challenge will be published in a separate call, with intent to participate to be registered in Jan 2016. CFP Mediated Intimacies DEADLINE EXTENDED Mediated Intimacies Call for Papers: Special Issue of Journal of Gender Studies to be published in March 2017 edited by Feona Attwood, Jamie Hakim, Alison Winch EXTENDED DEADLINE - 30th January 2016 In what ways does media convergence culture represent, intervene in, exploit and enable intimate relations? How is intimacy being reconfigured under neoliberalism? On the one hand we are living in atomized and individualistic times where relationships are increasingly strategic and competitive. On the other the media has become, as Beverly Skeggs argues, intensely intimate. This special issue on mediated intimacies aims to explore how understandings of intimacy are (re)constructed and experienced, particularly in digital cultures. In addition, we are interested in the ways in which the apparently alienated entrepreneurial self is constructed through and by forging intimate connections and simultaneously how these networks are mined and monetized by corporate culture. This special issue of Journal of Gender Studies is developed from a symposium held in July 2014 on Mediated Intimacies where the speakers explored, among other topics, girls’ online friendships, ‘expert’ sex advice in printed media, male seduction communities, and how pornography reconceptualises the very idea of intimacy itself. Potential papers could explore the affective dimensions of intimate practices reflecting the pleasures and pains of life lived under neoliberalism, including how precarity and class impact on the ways in which intimacy is forged. Because digital culture is primarily corporate driven (Taylor 2014) we are interested in how user-generated media employs self-branding strategies. For example, in the refashioning of the body or gendered and sexual identities, or the ways in which intimacy can be a form of self-promotion. Feminist and queer perspectives seek to expand the reach of what is constituted as belonging, love, connection and intimacy. Whereas recession culture has reestablished normative gender categories (Negra and Tasker 2014) contemporary digital cultures have the potential to challenge and rework gender and sexual identities (McGlotten 2013). This issue hopes to explore these productive tensions. Potential papers could also explore how sexuality, sex, sexual knowledges and sexual pleasure function by looking, for example, at Do-It-Yourself porn, sexual subcultures and alternative sex practices. A final consideration underpinning this issue is how different intimacies intersect along axes of class, race, disability, age and geographical location. Call for Workshop Participation! Deadline Extended!! Unpacking Social Signaling Theory for Social Computing Systems Analysis and Design @ CSCW 2016 Social signaling theory (SST) is an analytical approach for interpreting interactions in social settings that are not ostensibly explicit. Historically, SST has been used to analyze behaviors in domains such as biology, economics, anthropology and sociology. Using SST as an approach for analyzing human behavior in the broad domain of social computing systems has been growing in many directions. Researchers have been using SST to understand how people assess the reliability of profile data in situations such as selecting experts, seeking romantic encounters, joining niche communities, or generally making sense of online social settings. Some possible questions we might think about for this workshop include: • Relationships: How does social signaling theory complement existing theories used for studying social computing systems? • Applications: What types of questions about social computing systems cannot currently be answered from an SST stance? • Interventions: How can SST be leveraged to facilitate the design of next generation social computing systems? The workshop will be active and interactive. Through a variety of creative activities and lively discussions, we will begin to unpack SST, map how it is currently being used in research, and investigate the potential for future exploration. We are planning a number of interesting activities and opportunities for discussion. Participants will be selected based on interest in the topic, demonstrated through extended abstracts submitted prior to the workshop. We have framed some possible motivating questions above. You might choose to frame your submission around one of those topics. However, alternative submission topics that would inform the workshop discussion include describing an application of SST in a setting, system designs which attempt to apply SST, or evaluations of SST as applied. We are also thrilled to accept papers which approach SST as a theoretical stance, an empirical study, or use it in a clearly framed research design. Papers will be selected based on a combination of quality and to gather a variety of perspectives. The Dynamics of Virtual Work series, is edited by Ursula Huws, Professor of Labour and Globalization at the University of Hertfordshire and Rosalind Gill, Professor of Cultural and Social Analysis at City University, this series was developed under the auspices of COST Action IS 1202. Technological change has transformed where people work, when, how and with whom. Digitisation of information has altered labour processes out of all recognition whilst telecommunications have enabled jobs to be relocated globally. ICTs have also enabled the creation of entirely new types of 'digital' or 'virtual' labour, both paid and unpaid, shifting the borderline between 'play' and 'work' and creating new types of unpaid labour connected with the consumption and co-creation of goods and services. Aspects of these changes have been studied separately by many different academic experts however up till now a cohesive overarching analytical framework has been lacking. Drawing on a major, high-profile COST Action (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Dynamics of Virtual Work, this series will bring together leading international experts from a wide range of disciplines including political economy, labour sociology, economic geography, communications studies, technology, gender studies, social psychology, organisation studies, industrial relations and development studies to explore the transformation of work and labour in the Internet Age. The series will allow researchers to speak across disciplinary boundaries, national borders, theoretical and political vocabularies, and different languages to understand and make sense of contemporary transformations in work and social life more broadly. The Dynamics of Virtual Work series, is edited by Ursula Huws, Professor of Labour and Globalization at the University of Hertfordshire and Rosalind Gill, Professor of Cultural and Social Analysis at City University, this series was developed under the auspices of COST Action IS 1202. Technological change has transformed where people work, when, how and with whom. Digitisation of information has altered labour processes out of all recognition whilst telecommunications have enabled jobs to be relocated globally. ICTs have also enabled the creation of entirely new types of 'digital' or 'virtual' labour, both paid and unpaid, shifting the borderline between 'play' and 'work' and creating new types of unpaid labour connected with the consumption and co-creation of goods and services. Aspects of these changes have been studied separately by many different academic experts however up till now a cohesive overarching analytical framework has been lacking. Drawing on a major, high-profile COST Action (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Dynamics of Virtual Work, this series will bring together leading international experts from a wide range of disciplines including political economy, labour sociology, economic geography, communications studies, technology, gender studies, social psychology, organisation studies, industrial relations and development studies to explore the transformation of work and labour in the Internet Age. The series will allow researchers to speak across disciplinary boundaries, national borders, theoretical and political vocabularies, and different languages to understand and make sense of contemporary transformations in work and social life more broadly. The first two volumes in the series are already published, with more in the pipeline. But these characteristics also come with some particular pitfalls when it comes to conceptualizing visual communication scholarship and to communicating both methods and results, especially for young scholars who deal with mediated images in their first comprehensive research projects. In conceptualizing visual communication research projects, young scholars must tackle pragmatic questions, such as how to access the visuals under study and how to make the analytical process as adequate and transparent as possible. But they also have to highlight the particular insights that the study of visuals can contribute to any given project. In communicating visual communication research projects, young scholars are not only confronted with the challenges of the material under study (e.g.: How to present videos in presentations and publications? What are the legal standards for the use of mediated images in presentations and publications?). They also have to face structural aspects of the scientific community, since young scholars who study mediated images are scattered across ICA divisions and interest groups and thus primarily interact with scholars for whom visual communication is not a primary interest or is even “exotic”, so that young scholars usually have to go the extra mile in legitimizing the visual aspects of their research projects. Aims This one-day preconference will therefore set out to bring together young scholars – i.e. both current PhD students and early career postdoctoral researchers – from all ICA divisions and interest groups who focus on visual images in their research projects. The event aims to address the needs of these young scholars from different sub-fields in media and communication studies by: 1) summarizing key challenges in conceptualizing and communicating visual communication research projects; 2) demonstrating some of the most significant ways in which the study of visual images contributes, both theoretically and methodologically, to research from across ICA divisions and interest groups; 3) providing strategies for presenting and communicating research projects to cross-divisional, cross-disciplinary academic audiences and for making use of the specific power of visuals in presenting visual communication research projects; 4) providing a forum for cross-divisional networking between young and senior scholars; and 5) providing feedback on young scholars’ research projects (e.g. in order to polish their work for publication). Format This event follows the very successful cross-divisional ICA Young Scholars Preconference on Visual Methods<http://www.visualmethods.net> in San Juan 2015, which featured workshop sessions with 34 young scholars from seven countries and 11 senior experts from five countries. This year’s preconference will follow a similar format, but it will focus on a new, though complementary, set of issues and questions. First, an opening keynote by distinguished visual communication expert David Perlmutter will give an overview of key issues in conceptualizing and communicating visual communication research projects. Second, in poster sessions, young scholars will have the opportunity to present their research projects, discuss their challenges in conceptualizing and communicating their projects with other participants, network with peers, and receive substantial feedback on their projects from experienced senior scholars. All young and senior scholars will participate in the poster sessions, a format that provides a practice-oriented overview of a range of approaches to visual communication studies and common challenges. Third, in subsequent parallel expert sessions, young scholars with methodologically and/or thematically related research projects will be grouped together and matched with senior scholars whose expertise matches their areas of research. The small groups will then discuss the challenges in conceptualizing and communicating visual research projects and possible solution strategies based on the research projects presented in the posters. Finally, in a closing plenary, we will summarize key insights originating from discussions in the expert sessions and, together with all participants, we will discuss ideas and plans for future networking and research events. The section seeks panels and papers on alternatives to capitalism, and how we might achieve them, both within the capitalist present and on the route to a post-capitalist society. We welcome papers on explicit contestation of capitalism through varyingly autonomous forms of struggle as well as futurist, anti-proprietary or gift culture movements, survivalism, cooperatives, DIY culture, permaculture, experimentation with cybernetics and post-humanist ideals, as well as revived institutional interests in wellbeing. Research has focused less, however, on questioning how (if at all) we might go beyond capitalism. This is despite global capitalism remaining dangerously unstable, not least because the global economic crisis that began in 2008 continues to linger without any obvious resolution to it. The aim of this section, therefore, is to bring together those with an interest in the rise of alternatives at varied positions along the ideological spectrum; mapping, studying, theorising, highlighting, judging and assessing practices which form contemporary alternatives to, and problems for, global capitalism. This includes pathways in local, regional and global contexts. In particular, we note two emerging types of response, each of which expose the ever-present possibility and presence of sometimes surprising and contradictory routes outside of capitalism, as well as raising the question of technology in contemporary social change. On the one hand, we see various modified projects seeking alternative routes to social justice and rights: futurist, anti-proprietary or gift culture movements, survivalism, cooperatives, DIY culture, permaculture, experimentation with cybernetics and post-humanist ideals, as well as revived institutional interests in wellbeing. On the other hand, we see the explicit contestation of capitalism through varyingly autonomous forms of struggle: Occupy, the indignados, the Greek grassroots projects, Rojava, and, then, the electoral manifestation of some of these trends within Syriza, Podemos, Barcelona en Comú, and Jeremy Corbyn.
