[CfP] 5th IEEE Track on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation (Comets 2016) **** Submission Deadline Extended ****
by Daniele Gianni 16 Feb '16

16 Feb '16

*************** Submission Deadline Extended ********************** (Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message) ################################################################# IEEE WETICE 2016 5th IEEE Track on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation (Comets 2016) in cooperation with (approval pending) INCOSE Italy MIMOS (Italian Association for M&S) CALL FOR PAPERS ################################################################# June 13-16, 2016 - Paris (France) http://www.sel.uniroma2.it/comets16 ################################################################# # Papers Due: February 25, 2016 ***** Extended ****** # Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings # by the IEEE Computer Society Press and will be submitted for # indexing through INSPEC, Compendex, Scopus, Thomson Reuters, # DBLP, Google Scholar and EI Index. ################################################################# Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is increasingly becoming a central activity in the design of new systems and in the analysis of existing systems because it enables designers and researchers to investigate systems behavior through virtual representations. For this reason, M&S is gaining a primary role in many industrial and research fields, such as space, critical infrastructures, manufacturing, emergency management, biomedical systems and sustainable future. However, as the complexity of the investigated systems increases and the types of investigations widens, the cost of M&S activities increases for the more complex models and for the communications among a wider number and variety of M&S stakeholders (e.g., sub-domain experts, simulator users, simulator engineers, and final system users). To address the increasing costs of M&S activities, collaborative technologies must be introduced to support these activities by fostering the sharing and reuse of models, by facilitating the communications among M&S stakeholders, and more generally by integrating processes, tools and platforms. Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the track seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices in the field of collaborative engineering platforms. These platforms are continuously becoming more complex, and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments. A non-exhaustive list of topics of interest includes: * collaborative requirements modeling * collaborative environments for M&S * collaborative Systems of Systems M&S * business process modeling for collaborative environments * agent-based M&S * collaborative distributed simulation * collaborative component-based M&S * net-centric M&S * web-based M&S * model sharing and reuse * model building and evaluation * modeling and simulation of business processes * modeling for collaboration * simulation-based performance analysis of collaborative engineering platforms * model-driven approaches for collaborative engineering * domain specific languages for collaborative M&S * databases and repositories for M&S * distributed virtual environments * virtual research environment for M&S * collaborative DEVS M&S * multi-method M&S To stimulate creativity, however, the track maintains a wider scope and invites interested researchers to present contributions that offer original perspectives on collaboration and M&S. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On-Line Submissions and Publication +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CoMetS'16 intends to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss key issues, approaches, open problems, innovative applications and trends in the track research area. Papers should contain original contributions not published or submitted elsewhere. Papers up to six pages (including figures, tables and references) can be submitted. Papers should follow the IEEE format (http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/ publishing/templates.html). All submissions should be submitted in PDF format and will be peer-reviewed by at least three program committee members. Accepted papers will be included in the proceedings and published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. Please note that at least one author for each accepted paper should register to attend WETICE 2016 (http://www.wetice.org) to have the paper published in the proceedings. Interested authors and participants may contact the organizers for expression of interests and content appropriateness at any time. Papers and posters can be submitted in PDF format at the conference submission site (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/? conf=wetice2016), by selecting the ÒCollaborative Modeling and SimulationÓ track. +++++++++++++++ Important Dates +++++++++++++++ * Submission Deadline: February 25, 2016 ***** Extended ***** * Notification to authors: March 28, 2016 * Camera Ready to IEEE: April 11, 2016 * Conference date: June 13-16, 2016 +++++++++++++++++ Program co-chairs +++++++++++++++++ Andrea D'Ambrogio, University of Roma TorVergata, Italy Gregory Zacharewicz, University of Bordeaux, France Daniele Gianni, Guglielmo Marconi University, Italy *** Contact Information *** Andrea D'Ambrogio (track co-chair) Email: dambro(a)uniroma2.it

Conference: Freedom and Control of Expression
by Earl, Jennifer Suzanne - (jenniferearl) 16 Feb '16

16 Feb '16

Please Share Widely - Conference Call for Papers Freedom and Control of Expression<http://www.iast.fr/conference/freedom-and-control-expression-digital-afterm…> In the Digital Aftermath of the 2015 French Attacks After the Charlie Hebdo newspaper offices were attacked in January 2015, debate and discussion flourished about freedom of expression, in France and abroad. This debate intensified after the Paris attacks of November 13th. At the epicenter is the role of the Internet and free speech. An enormous wave of worldwide indignation expressed itself after both events, including a deluge of hashtag solidarity. But this social media storm eventually revealed cultural, political and social divides inside France, as well as globally. Much like after the 9/11 attacks, France passed laws allowing state surveillance of online communication. At the same time, social media censored posts about the attacks that were considered to be provocative or shocking. The variety of reactions, including indifference or, on the contrary, the expression of very different points of view - sometimes even surveilled or censored - showed that one hashtag is neither unifying nor a universal view shared by everyone. This event magnified the notion that the digital public sphere is a conflicting arena of not just what is being said (or kept quiet) online but also what the limits are. Undoubtedly, the Internet is the main means of massive public expression for millions. Yet it is still the result of a complex set of power relations established between professional media, amateur content producing communities, which sometimes defend particular interests, as well as corporate intermediaries. The resulting online content embodies rival editorial, political and industrial strategies. Recently, scholars have begun to question the idea of digital participatory democracy in terms of a level playing field. This workshop aims to progress this debate by addressing the following central question: Who controls freedom of expression and online content in the digital era, and how? Embedded in this question are the challenges and constraints of expression, such as the tension between a bottom-up or top-down digital public sphere or who is left out as a digital player. Also central to this question are the role of three broad actors: the state, market and civil society. Possible topics for submissions include the following State - What is the government's role - from subsidizing digital participation to censorship and surveillance? What is the role of political ideology, broadly defined, in freedom of expression? What is the relationship between media institutions and the state when it comes to online free speech? Market - What is the interplay of market dominance, algorithms, censorship and Big Data? How are transformations in news production and consumption, especially in terms of platforms like Facebook, shaping freedom of expression? How do different types of capitalist economic systems shape freedom of expression? How do market constraints upon corporate media, and mainstream journalism shape freedom of expression? Civil society - Who is creating content, and if so, who is listening, watching and clicking? How does race, class, ethnicity and gender factor in? Who is marginalized? How effective is Internet use as an extension or part of activist and social movement practices vis-à-vis political expression. What is the role of alternative, independent and citizen media in this digital era of online expression? Target Audience and Scholars: This is an interdisciplinary workshop but geared toward sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, economists and communication scholars. Scholars at all levels are encouraged to participate. A small number of travel grants may be available to permit outstanding junior scholars (under 35 years at the date of the conference) to attend. Please state in your paper submission whether you wish to apply for such a travel grant. Dates: October 13 & 14, 2016 Format: The workshop will feature speakers, panels and paper presentations. Submissions: Full paper submissions based on empirical research of conference topics (maximum 25 pages including references and tables/figures) due by Friday, April 1. Theoretical papers will also be considered. Please submit papers to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=fceda15pa. We will notify you of acceptance by May 6. You will have to create an account in Easychair in order to submit. Registration: Register for the conference by June 30. Space is limited. Registration information coming soon. Cost: Free Location: Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST), Toulouse School of Economics (TSE), Toulouse, France. Fellowship opportunities with Ranking Digital Rights
by Nathalie Marechal 16 Feb '16

16 Feb '16

Greetings, Ranking Digital Rights is recruiting graduate students and seasoned researchers with background in computer science, engineering, Internet and telecommunications law, communication studies (other relevant field) for fellowship opportunities in 2016. Fellows must be committed to advancing respect for digital rights worldwide and have prior academic research experience or professional work related to freedom of expression, censorship, privacy, and surveillance in the ICT sector. Speaking from personal experience, I have found working with RDR to be a terrific complement to PhD coursework, providing me with a much richer understanding of technology policy and Internet governance than graduate school alone would have. I would be delighted to speak with anyone on this list about the project. Please see https://rankingdigitalrights.org/2016/02/16/fellowship-opportunities-with-r… for more information.
