Digital technologies have been celebrated for enabling new levels of democratic communication, participatory media production, community building and media activism. From Wikipedia, to open source programming, open access publishing, and peer-to-peer file sharing, we have witnessed the rise of a range of alternative forms of communication and media production that seemed to challenge established media business models and momentarily contested corporate power. However, far from decreasing the dominance of corporate media, the expansion of digital culture, the Internet and social media further strengthened the power of multinational corporations over media culture and human communication. Despite the rhetoric of ‘social’ media, sharing, community and collaboration, the majority of the digital media sphere remains privately owned and controlled. In this corporate media system, multinational corporations maintain almost exclusive control over large parts of the media and communication technology, infrastructure and content. Power in communicative capitalism is uneven and corporate control confronts us with a range of problems such as the systematic surveillance of Internet users, an increasingly commercialised online environment, devastating environmental impacts of the production and usage of media technologies and the global exploitation of digital labour. (Digital) media technologies are deeply entangled with the on-going economic, social, environmental and political crises. Mobilising the empowering qualities of digital technologies and their potential to contribute to progressive social change requires an effective critique of corporate dominance, challenging power inequalities and strengthening radical alternatives. This conference invites contributions that offer a critical analysis of corporate media culture and alternatives to it and thus contribute to rethinking power in communicative capitalism. Questions that can be addressed include, but are not limited to the following ones: - Theorizing communicative capitalism How does power work in communicative capitalism, how can it be theorised and rethought? - Ideology in communicative capitalism What are the main forms of ideology in communicative capitalism and how do they operate in the media? Which forms and approaches of ideology critique do we need to understand them? How are contemporary right-wing extremist, far-right populist, fascist, neoliberal, patriarchal, racist, anti-socialist, pro-capitalist and religious ideologies expressed on the Internet and social media and what are the ways of expressing their petitions for challenging them? - The environmental impact of communicative capitalism What are the environmental impacts of the production of media and communication technologies along global supply chains? What are the environmental impacts of media usage and ‘cloud computing’? What are key drivers of negative environmental impacts and how can they be confronted? - Labour in communicative capitalism How does exploitation and alienation work in communicative capitalism? What is the relation between various forms of digital labour? How do working conditions look like in the global production of media and communication technologies? What are the limits and potentials of a global solidary labour movement in communicative capitalism? How can we best think of the relation between work and communication, labour and profit, the economy and culture? How do we have to rethink or even revise the concepts of the “base” and the “superstructure”? - Marxism and communicative capitalism What is the role, importance and legacy of Karl Marx’s works and Marxist theory in the age of communicative capitalism? - Gender and sexuality in communicative capitalism What is the role of and relationship of identity politics and anti-capitalism for feminist media sociology today? - Global perspectives on communicative capitalism What global power inequalities and asymmetries shape communicative capitalism? - Communicative capitalism and the public sphere How can we best theorise and understand potentials and limits for the mediated public sphere in communicative capitalism? - Media and communicative capitalism How have the media changed in recent years? Are there scopes beyond the capitalist media? How can we best use critical/Marxist political economy and other critical approaches for understanding the media today? What is the role of media and communication technologies in the acceleration and globalization of the capitalist economy? What are the conditions of working in the media, cultural and communication industries in the contemporary times? Who owns the media and ICTs? What are specific characteristics of knowledge and the media as property? - Resisting communicative capitalism What are strategies for left politics to effectively resist and challenge communicative capitalism? What is the role of media activisms today? And the relation between the street activism and the media activism (“Tweets and the streets”…)? And how the unions and other kind of non-governmental associations use the media? How their uses differ from the uses made by the newly social movements? Which are the opportunities and the limits of media activisms? - Alternatives to communicative capitalism What are the problems and post-capitalist potentials of alternative projects such as cultural and media co-operatives, left-wing and radical media projects, alternative social media, alternative online platforms, alternative media, community media projects, commons-based media, peer production projects, etc.? - Communicative capitalism and the common What are the potentials or the common to challenge and offer an alternative to communicative capitalism? How can the threat of co-optation be resisted? - Communicative capitalism and state power How does the relationship of media, communication and state power influence the various forms of regulation, control, repression, violence and surveillance? ACM UMAP 2016 Call for Papers The 24th ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada 13-17 July 2016 http://www.um.org/umap2016/ (collocated with Hypertext 2016) UMAP is the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users, to groups of users, and that collect, represent, and model user information. UMAP is the successor to the biennial User Modeling (UM) and Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-based Systems (AH) conferences that were merged in 2009. It is sponsored by ACM SIG CHI and SIG WEB, and organized under the auspices of User Modeling Inc. ACM UMAP 2016 covers a wide variety of research areas where adaptation may be applied. This include (but is in no way limited to) a number of domains in which researchers are engendering significant innovations based on advances in user modeling and adaptation: recommender systems; adaptive educational systems; intelligent user interfaces; eCommerce; advertising; digital humanities; social networks; personalized health; entertainment, and many more. Key Areas: UMAP 2016 will explore, study and shape a broad range of dimensions faced by modern user adaptive systems, covering the following Key Areas chaired by leading researchers. We welcome original, and principled research papers addressing both the theory and practice of UMAP and papers showcasing innovative use of UMAP and exploring the benefits and challenges of applying UMAP technology in real-life applications and contexts. Authors will be asked to indicate one or more key areas (from the five listed below) at the time of submission. Submissions should be made into one of two categories - long and short papers as defined below. Long papers (8 pages + references) should present original reports of substantive new research techniques, findings, and applications of UMAP. They should place the work within the field and clearly indicate innovative aspects. Research procedures and technical methods should be presented in sufficient detail to ensure scrutiny and reproducibility. Results should be clearly communicated and implications of the contributions/findings for UMAP and beyond should be explicitly discussed. Short papers (4 pages + references) should present original and highly promising research or applications. Merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance rather than maturity, extensive technical validation, and user studies, although some form of validation is desirable. Maintaining the high quality and impact of the UMAP series, each paper will be single-blind reviewed by three program committee members and meta-reviewed to present the reviewers' consensual view; the review process will be coordinated by the program chairs in collaboration with the corresponding area chairs. Separation of long and short papers will be strictly enforced so papers will not compete across categories but within each category. Papers that receive high scores and are considered promising by reviewers, but didn't make the acceptance cut, will be invited to be resubmitted as posters and/or demos. Submission Details and Publication: Page limits: Long papers - 8 pages + references; Short pages: 4 pages + references. Note that reference do not count towards page limits. Papers that exceed the page limits or formatting guidelines will be returned without review. Submissions should be single-blinded, i.e. the authors can have their names in the paper. Papers must be formatted using the ACM SIG proceedings template and submitted via EasyChair. Submission templates: http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template Easychair submission: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=umap2016 Accepted papers will be published by ACM and will be available via the ACM Digital Library. by Nathan Stolero 14 Feb '16

14 Feb '16

Dear AOIRs, I'm doing a research on information seeking behavior in Tel Aviv University. I'm looking for an android tool/app (I don't date to ask for iOS of course) that can save a log with data usage of the phone (What apps were used in a specific period, for how long if possible and maybe a more detailed log) OR a simple screen capture (in video) of the mobile screen. I was wondering whether you know any or I'm looking for something that does not exist? Research ethical issues for panel at AoIR16?
by Charles Ess 14 Feb '16

14 Feb '16

Dear AoIRists, Recognizing that it's getting a bit tight in terms of the March 1 deadline for proposal submissions - nonetheless, I would ask for suggestions and expresssions of interest for contributions to a panel proposal provisionally titled "Contemporary Internet research ethics: o.k. in the grey?" The idea is first of all to go forward from last year's panel, which highlighted several deeply challenging ethical problems in contemporary Internet research: death-casting (Yukari Seko), nakedness and contextual ethics (Katrin Tiidenberg), issues in online counseling (Camilla Granholm), and studying closed FB groups for parents grieving the deaths of their children (Ylva Hård af Segerstad, Dick Kasperowski). These contributions were then commented on by Mark Johns and Annette Markham, who deftly helped weave them in with comparable / larger themes and issues. The open discussion then took up these and additional issues - including the then fresh discussion on the AoIR list of the ethics of using (my pararphase) sensitive / personal data without informed consent or other usual protections, following their "leaking" into publicly accessible venues (sometimes called "grey data"). My hopes for the panel are to update findings and reflections on these specific cases and to extend both examples of such challenging cases, coupled with careful ethical analyses from diverse ethical and cultural traditions - including attention to how we might best wrestle with such ethically grey areas. "O.k. in the grey" is both a reminder of the questions of "grey data", but also goes back to an especially astute student comment in an applied ethics class (now many, many moons ago) as her summary of what we were learning and practicing: namely, how to come to somewhat more comfortable grips with multiple possible approaches and resolutions, along with the correlative intrinsic ambiguities and uncertainties, in our efforts to respond to ethical challenges that must be resolved one way or another. Further, part of the upshot of the discussion was the clear need to continue to explore such cases - both for their own sake and for the sake of an eventual 3.0 version of the AoIR ethics guidelines for Internet research. As many of you know, version 2.0 was published in 2012, led by Annette Markham and Elizabeth Buchanan, following two years' (if not more) work by the AoIR ethics committee. As some of you may not know, the ethics committee has been dissolved. There were many sound and good reasons for this: but especially in the absence of a given group of persons formally assigned responsibilities for such discussions, I also hope that the proposed panel will help keep alive our shared reflections and dialogues on some of the most pressing matters of Internet research ethics. Please send me off-list any suggestions, etc. I will be especially grateful for brief descriptions of a case that you and/or a group of researchers would be interested in and able to present as part of such a panel for general reflection and discussion. Ditto for nominations, including self-nominations, for panel commentators. Many thanks in advance and much looking forward, - charles ess Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> Director, Centre for Research in Media Innovations (CeRMI) Editor, The Journal of Media Innovations <https://www.journals.uio.no/index.php/TJMI/> <https://www.journals.uio.no/index.php/TJMI/> Postboks 1093 Blindern 0317 Oslo, Norway c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no
