CIRN Prato 2016 Conference, Notice of upcoming Call for Papers
by Rhinesmith, Colin H. 11 Feb '16

11 Feb '16

Dear Colleagues, NOTICE OF UPCOMING CALL FOR PAPERS - (refereed and non-refereed), works-in-progress, workshop proposals and posters, graduate student work CONFERENCE THEME: ENGAGING WITH PARTICIPATION, ACTIVISM, AND TECHNOLOGIES 13th Prato CIRN Conference 2-4 November 2016, Monash Centre, Prato Italy http://cirn.wikispaces.com/Conference+2016 For some years now the CIRN Prato conference has focused on the intersection between Community Informatics (CI), Development Informatics (DI), and Community Archiving (CA). In particular, the 2015 conference focused on information and knowledge as socially constructed artifacts and the ways in which relations of information and knowledge production can reflect unequal distributions of power and privilege, ?whether manifested in gendered activity; the primacy given to formalized expertise or particular language codes; restricted access to information, knowledge and production for those not in positions of institutional control; or the production of particular artifacts?. The 2015 conference also questioned the role of the academy in defining terminology and appropriate technologies of memory, viewing this as a form of epistemological colonization, epistemological colonization on vulnerable groups. The conference sought ways of engaging more meaningfully with practitioners. In 2016 the intention is to continue to explore and to expand on such issues, bringing a stronger focus on more meaningful and equal partnerships with community, civil society, and NGO organisations around the world. The overarching theme of the conference, then, will be the further development of Participatory Action Research (PAR) with regard to both theory and practice, as a means of giving communities a stronger voice despite structural and cultural challenges. This will be explored in a variety of contexts, with particular emphasis on the implications for archival, community and development informatics. One of our keynotes and participants will be Meghna Guhathakurta of Research Initiatives, Bangladesh, an internationally-recognised expert in PAR. Bangladesh has a long history of Participatory Action Research, as part of its struggle for liberation and equality, going back to the earliest days of PAR. Within that context, a second theme of the conference will be to engage with activist archives, such as the Centro di Documentazione di Pistoia (Italy) or the Interference Archive (USA), which see a more overtly political role for the archive, and which tend to privilege use over collection. The approach of these archives to issues of local memory, knowledge and power, will also be of interest to people working in international development, and provides an opportunity to work towards new modes of collaboration. Together, these themes provide a rich environment for re-examining theoretical and methodological approaches to working with community, and the potential to address current concerns as expressed within Community and Development Informatics, such as a lack of theoretical and methodological rigour, and concern about the influence of dominant hegemonies whether they represent powerful sectoral interests, as in Community Informatics, or the Global North, as in Development Informatics . Are their bodies of theory (for example, post-colonial, intersectional or critical theory) and practice that are intrinsically (better for the Global South) (or ?more appropriate?), or do such theories and associated practices continue to serve academic, rather than development interests? Our aim for the conference is for it to be an active community practice in, and not just discussions about, pluralism. We therefore encourage participation from a wide range of cultures, races, ethnicities, religions, socio-economic statuses, gender identities, disabilities, and ages. We also encourage proposals for different ways of knowing and sharing. We especially seek to foster dialogue across difference rather than presentation and preservation of homogeneity, when new ICTs in particular allow the existence and fruitful production of multiverses of information and knowledge. We will also consider papers (refereed and non-refereed), works-in-progress, workshop proposals and posters, related to any aspect of Community Informatics, Development Informatics or Community Archiving. We are particularly interested in papers from researchers and practitioners that can address the challenges of locating community-based research within wider theoretical and practice frameworks. We also have a strong stream for students in Masters and PhD programs who wish to present their work to a larger audience. Conference Committee MB Akhter, Oxfam in Bangladesh Tom Denison, Monash University Joanne Evans, Monash University Anne Gilliland, UCLA Kiera Ladner, University of Manitoba Sue McKemmish, Monash University (Chair) Safiya Noble, UCLA Colin Rhinesmith, University of Oklahoma Mauro Sarrica, Sapienza University, Rome Larry Stillman, Monash University Miriam Sweeney, University of Alabama Kelvin White, University of Oklahoma Martin Wolske, University of Illinois Important Dates and other information will be made available shortly at http://cirn.wikispaces.com/Conference+2016, with a further notice when abstracts can be submitted. CFP: AOIR 2016 panel - 'the playful web'
by Shireen Walton 11 Feb '16

11 Feb '16

CfP: AoIR 2016 panel - ‘the playful web’ We solicit papers for a panel considering the notion of ‘play’ as a framework for conceptualising internet research. Most existing scholarship exploring play in relation to internet technologies concentrates on games and gaming (Salen and Zimmerman 2003; Juul 2003; Boellstorff 2008; Nardi 2010). Whilst undoubtedly important, little attention has been given to the ‘play element’ itself in human-technological encounters, and in settings that are not so obviously ludic. Leaving this gap unaddressed risks ‘play’ becoming a category reserved only for a narrow spectrum of activities, or a notion deemed dialectically opposed to ‘work’. This panel addresses the gap by considering play a concept-metaphor (Huizinga 1949; Turner 1982), and analytical category for investigating entities or domains which in themselves are not necessarily considered playful (Frissen et al. 2015). From the drafting of internet legislation, digital labour or the activities of hackers, activists and artists, we seek papers that explore diverse theoretical and practical dimensions of play. Thinking in this fashion does not obviate enquires into issues of power and inequality. To the contrary, one task becomes tracking how the disposition of play has been turned into an ‘object of institutional desire’, how attitudes of indeterminacy, affective power and improvisation become coopted or denied, commodified and utilised in internet environments by individuals and organisations alike (Malaby 2009, 216). As such, the panel feeds strongly back into the main conference theme: (how) can rule-making and breaking be undertaken in a playful fashion? If so, with what consequences? We welcome papers from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, methodologies, and subjects. Topics may include (but are not limited to): games as practice and/or confrontation vis-à-vis status and hierarchy, power and representation; identity and community; chance and uncertainty. Such interests might be explored amongst and between individuals and groups, governments and organisations, from hackers and their practices to artists, citizen journalists, activists and beyond. To be considered for this panel, we would need the AOIR-standard 1200-word abstract by February 22, 2016 sent to: john.mcmanus(a)gtc.ox.ac.uk<mailto:john.mcmanus@gtc.ox.ac.uk>. We will notify our selected panelists by February 26 with any revisions required ahead of the AOIR deadline of March 1. Any questions, please email the panel organisers, shireen.walton(a)anthro.ox.ac.uk<mailto:shireen.walton@sant.ox.ac.uk> and john.mcmanus(a)gtc.ox.ac.uk<mailto:john.mcmanus@gtc.ox.ac.uk> --- Dr Shireen Walton Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology University of Oxford shireen.walton(a)anthro.ox.ac.uk<mailto:shireen.walton@anthro.ox.ac.uk>

New Book: "The Turn to Infrastructure in Internet Governance"
by Francesca Musiani 11 Feb '16

11 Feb '16

Dear AoIR community, Derrick Cogburn, Laura DeNardis, Nanette Levinson and I have the pleasure to announce tle publication of our co-edited book "The Turn to Infrastructure in Internet Governance". The book is available in hardcover and will soon be available as an eBook, on the Palgrave website and on other sellers' websites. http://www.palgrave.com/us/book/9781137533265 It includes contributions by several GigaNet members including Matthew Schruers, Primavera De Filippi, Danièle Bourcier, Meryem Marzouki, Nicolas Arpagian, John Laprise, Patricia Vargas-Leon, Kenneth Merrill and Tatevik Sargsyan, and the four of us. The pre-print version of the introductory chapter by Laura DeNardis and I will soon be available on SSRN. Here is a short presentation of the book: This edited volume brings together experts from around the world to provide coverage and analysis of infrastructure's role in Internet governance, both now and in the future. Never in history have conflicts over Internet governance attracted such widespread attention. High-profile controversies include the disclosures about NSA surveillance by intelligence analyst Edward Snowden, controversy over a decision by the US government to relinquish its historic oversight of Internet names and numbers, and countless cybersecurity breaches involving unauthorized access to Internet users' personal data. Much of the Internet governance ecosystem—both technical architecture and coordinating institutions—is behind the scenes but increasingly carries significant public interest implications. An area once concealed in institutional and technological complexity is now rightly bracketed among other shared global issues —such as environmental protection and human rights—that have considerable global implications but are simply incongruous with national borders. This transformation into an era of global governance by Internet infrastructure presents a moment of opportunity for scholars to bring these politicized infrastructures to the foreground. CFP > International Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Access (AMCIS'16 mini track)
by Fichman, Pnina 10 Feb '16

10 Feb '16

Call for Papers: 22nd Americas Conference on Information Systems August 11 - 13, 2016, San Diego, CA, USA Dear Colleagues, We welcome submissions for the mini track entitled “International Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Access”, for AMCIS 2016 Track: Global, International, and Cross-Cultural Issues in IS (SIGCCRIS) Mini Track: International Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Access Description: Networks and systems within the contemporary information society are in many ways constrained by access to ICT, including availability, awareness, ability or literacy, and infrastructural support for ICT use and ICT-mediated processes. All dimensions of ICT access are highly unequal globally. Current efforts to improve infrastructure and availability—including broadband speeds, reliability of connectivity, stability and maintenance of systems, and interoperability—often span geographic boundaries and include both the public and private sectors. Furthermore, efforts to impact awareness and literacy are highly culturally context dependent. Outcomes associated with ICT access initiatives vary significantly, both between countries and within them, and differences in outcomes are often associated with contextual differences in policy interpretation and adoption strategies. This mini-track will focus on all stages of collaborative and independent access initiatives—including policy, planning, implementation, and evaluation—supporting the improvement and sustainability of ICT access and infrastructure across local, national, and regional borders. Call for Papers: Why is ICT access so unequal globally? Why do plans for ICT improvement lead to different outcomes in different contexts? Global variation in ICT access, particularly availability and infrastructure, is extreme, which has serious implications for global communications, relationships, business, and other processes. Efforts to address both imbalances and insufficiencies lead to highly divergent outcomes, despite efforts to replicate successful projects. It is important to understand the status of access from a comparative international perspective, so as to understand the roles of social, political, and cultural factors in shaping outcomes. How successful are international efforts to improve ICT access? Given the increasing interdependence of ICT access internationally, as multinational corporations and global travel and migration, leads people and systems to depend on different infrastructural systems to support their connectivity needs, there has been increased attention toward collaboration, interoperability, and common regulation of ICT access worldwide. Research needs to address international ICT access improvement, so as to better support the reliability and sustainability of global systems and to better design future initiatives. What is the role of culture in shaping the policy process surrounding ICT access improvement? Given the variation in infrastructure, even in instances of collaborative efforts, contextual variation, including the influences of culture, seemingly plays an important role in how initiatives relating to ICT are implemented. Further exploration of how aspects of context shape all stages of initiatives, including planning, implementation, and evaluation, is significant to understanding differences in outcomes. This mini-track invites submissions that address collaborations relating to ICT access, as well as comparative analyses on ICT infrastructure status and initiatives and case studies. Submissions addressing infrastructure and governance of infrastructure at city, state, regional, geographical, national, and international levels are welcome. Potential Topics: Integrated cross-border infrastructure Standardization of ICT access and ICT access regulation Initiative failures associated with internationalization or comparative cultural differences Case studies addressing culture Cross-country, cross-state, or cross-regional ICT infrastructure analysis Impact of supra-national governance on ICT access Interoperability across contexts Comparative evaluation of ICT access initiative outcomes Inequality in access or reliability across contexts, as impacts multinational business SUBMISSION SITE http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/amcis2016 Submissions may be of two types: • Completed research papers (< 5000 words, excluding references, tables, and figures) • Research-in-progress papers (< 3500 words, excluding references, tables, and figures) All conference submissions will be double-blind, peer reviewed, and must be submitted using the online submission system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/amcis2016 For complete instructions for authors and information about the conference, visit the AMCIS 2016 website at http://amcis2016.aisnet.org<http://amcis2016.aisnet.org/> IMPORTANT DATES January 4, 2016: Manuscript submissions for AMCIS 2016 begin March 2, 2016: AMCIS manuscript submissions closes for authors at 10:00am PST CHAIR CONTACT INFORMATION Madelyn Sanfilippo, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University mhomuth(a)indiana.edu<mailto:mhomuth@indiana.edu> Pnina Fichman, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University fichman(a)indiana.edu<mailto:fichman@indiana.edu> ------------------------ Pnina Fichman Chair, Department of Information and Library Science Director, Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington http://ella.slis.indiana.edu/~fichman/

by Pilar Garces 10 Feb '16

10 Feb '16

Dear all. Please find pasted below a call for papers for a volume on mediated service encounters. Best, Pilar Pilar G. Blitvich, Ph.D. Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in English UNC Charlotte | Department of English 9201 University City Blvd. | Charlotte, NC 28223 Phone: 704- 687 2126 | Fax: 704-687-3961 pgblitvi(a)uncc.edu http://english.uncc.edu/people/blitvich-pilar-phd Co-Editor in Chief - Journal of Language Aggression and Conflict http://benjamins.com/#catalog/journals/jlac CALL FOR PAPERS: Mediated Service Encounters Service encounters are a pervasive and fundamental practice in everyday life whereby products, information, or commodities are traded between a service provider and a service seeker. Due to their preponderance, service encounters have been widely studied from different perspectives (Hernández-López and Fernández-Amaya, 2015). Although research on service encounters has now a long standing tradition (Merrit 1976), there is a pressing need for further research that focuses on the consequences that outsourcing, globalization (Sifianou 2013) and the new technologies have had on this genre (Garcés-Conejos Blitvich 2015). To that end, this volume aims to further explore interaction in mediated service encounters. We welcome chapter proposals focusing on the following topics, but not exclusively: · Email communication and service encounters· Commercial websites· Online chats and service encounters· Online forums and service encounters· Outsourcing, globalization, and mediated service encounters· Telephone service encounters· (Im)politeness, conflict and aggression in mediated service encounters· Gender in mediated service encounters· Mediated health care communication· Conversational structure of mediated service encounters· Negotiation in mediated service encounters· Mediated service encounters in academic contexts· Mediated service encounters in business contexts· Mediated service encounters in tourism contexts· Mediated service encounters and social media· Mediation in mediated service encounters· On-line reviews - Communication between service providers and customers in cross-cultural contexts Proposals (original research) should be circa 350 words long and should focus on multimodality/or discourse analysis. All submissions should be written in English and sent to the editors before 31st March 2016: - Pilar Garcés-Conejos Blitvich (pgblitvi(a)uncc.edu)- Lucía Fernández-Amaya (lferama(a)upo.es)- María de la O Hernández-López (mariolahl(a)upo.es) Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions and feel free to circulate this call for papers among those who may be interested.

Research in Media and Memory
by Marta Delatte 10 Feb '16

10 Feb '16

Dear friends, I would like to invite you to participate in the research project I'm undertaking as part of the Initiative for Research in Media and Memory at the University of Hull (UK) and that is hosted here --> https://wanderingliquen.com/ <https://owa.scar.hull.ac.uk/owa/redir.aspx?C=c4f0f39191af453ab04568aca3e504…> The aim of this research project is to create an app that will help individuals to explore a topic of their choice in Wikipedia and provide them with information (a feedback) on their usage that will highlight the type of stereotypical biases (memory transgressions towards stereotypes such as gender, race, economic background etc.) that characterize their exploration. The study explores the relationship between human memory and digital memory in creative archives and is being carried out from a feminist and decolonial approach, which means that we are trying to be inclusive throughout the work process and that any feedback you may want to give us on this and other issues will be very well received and much appreciated. The research project has three stages: a) An online survey about the user experience of retrieval and knowledge discovery in creative archives (The questionnaire will take approximately 8 minutes of your time) b) An interview where you will be asked to give further information about some of the questions raised on the general survey (The interview may take between 15 and 30 minutes) c) Two online events to test the usability of the application. The first event will take place between April and May 2016, the second event will take place between September and October 2016 and in both cases you will decide the extent of your participation. Your participation in this research will be completely confidential and data will be averaged and reported in aggregate. Possible outlets of dissemination may be papers published in academic journals and a PhD dissertation. Although your participation in this research may not benefit you personally, it will help us understand how to improve the user experience of exploration in creative archives such as micro blogging sites and social media platforms.
