CfP for AOIR2016: Panel/Roundtable on "Aging in a Digital World”
by Adrienne Massanari 10 Feb '16

10 Feb '16

CfP: Panel/Roundtable on ‘Aging in a Digital World” We are looking for some additional participants for either a roundtable or panel submission to #AoIR2016 in Berlin on the topic of “Aging in a Digital World.” Specifically, we are looking for works that highlight the intersection of the internet with later life (50+ years). In keeping with the conference theme of rules, potential questions that might be addressed include: · What are the rules of older adulthood in an increasingly digital world? · What constitutes rule making and rule breaking on the internet at older ages? · Are there generational differences in the ways we engage with socio-technical interfaces? · How might media representations of later life be subverted and/or engaged? · What disparities are introduced as aging adults engage in digital living? · What stories and experiences about aging on/through online spaces are we not telling? Kindly register your interest in participating in this submission by emailing a 250-300 word abstract and brief biographical statement by 20 February 2016 to both Adrienne Massanari at amass(a)uic.edu and Kelly Quinn at kquinn8(a)uic.edu. The ultimate format of this submission will depend on the interests of the group. Please let us know if you have any questions. Kind regards, Adrienne and Kelly --- Adrienne Massanari, PhD Assistant Professor Department of Communication University of Illinois at Chicago @hegemonyrules www.adriennemassanari.com <http://www.adriennemassanari.com/>

Call for Papers: "Digital Traces in Context"
by Leif Kramp 10 Feb '16

10 Feb '16

******* EXCUSES FOR CROSS-POSTING ******* "Digital Traces in Context" CALL FOR PAPERS for a Special Section in International Journal of Communication Guest-edited by: Andreas Hepp, Professor, Communication & Media Studies Thomas N. Friemel, Professor, Communication & Media Studies Andreas Breiter, Professor, Information Management & Education Technologies University of Bremen OVERVIEW “Big data” has become a contested buzzword for media and communications research, but remains a vague concept when it comes to empirical, contextualised analysis and interpretations. From the point of view of the media user and a critical analysis of media practices, it is rather “digital traces” that matter. The term “traces” puts emphasis on the fact that these data result from the practices of individuals, collectivities, and organizations while using digital media. To understand “digital traces” we have to relate them to the various actors who originate them, as well as the contexts that matter. When putting “digital traces in context,” we have to reflect the programmers who design and implement the related technologies, the features of the technologies (e.g., the underlying algorithms), the actors producing the traces through their practice, the procedures of data gathering, as well as the relation of these data with various kinds of other information. Hence, studying the context of digital traces goes beyond the mere analysis of “big data.” Investigating digital traces is a challenge for research methods (e.g., data mining, validation, research ethics, replicability, transparency), and theories (e.g., grasping general patterns, development of new theories), and a profound reflection of all of this (e.g., redefining the basis for academic critique). The aim of the Special Section is to bring scholars of media and communications research together with scholars of other disciplines to reflect the chances of researching “digital traces in context” as one way of making a proper sense of “datafication.” POSSIBLE TOPICS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: - Theoretical approaches to digital traces and their social, cultural and technological contexts - Qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches to researching digital traces in contextualised ways, including internal and external validation of digital traces - Implications and affordances of system design and infrastructures for digital traces - New ways of visualizing digital traces - Actors defining and producing digital traces (programmers, intermediaries, users, etc.) - Relations between social practices, behaviour and digital traces - Critiques of digital traces producing infrastructures and social practices - Ethical issues concerning the collecting and analysing of digital traces FORMATTING AND REQUIREMENTS To be considered for this collection, a paper of maximum 7,000 words (all-inclusive, which includes the abstract, keywords, images with captions, footnotes, references and appendices, if any) must be submitted by June 16, 2016 and adhere to the following formal requirements: - Formatting according to the most recent version of the APA style-guide (including in-text citations and references). - Any endnotes should be converted to footnotes. - Papers must include the author(s) name(s), title, affiliation and e-mail address. (Your paper will subsequently anonymized for double-blind peer review.) - All articles should include an abstract of 150 words. - All spelling must be rendered in American English. Deadline extended: Workshop on mining social media for communication research
by Hai Liang 10 Feb '16

10 Feb '16

Apologies for cross-posting. Dear colleagues, We are organising an ICA’2016 preconference workshop on mining social media for communication research, which will be held in Tokyo in June 8, 2016. Please kindly help distribute the call for participants to your colleagues/friends/students. Thanks! *The registration deadline has been extended to 15 Feb 2016. * Best, Hai *Call for Participants for ICA’2016 Preconference Workshop on Mining Social Media for Communication Research* *Date and Time: * June 8, 2016 (9:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00) *Location and Venue: * National Institute of Informatics (NII), Tokyo, Japan The emergence of social media has provided both opportunities and challenges for communication research, ranging from data acquisition to measurement construction, statistical analysis, and results presentation. However, the existing tools (such as manual content analysis and SPSS package) with which communication scholars are familiar become increasingly inadequate. This one-day preconference workshop will focus on four key steps in mining social media for communication research, including overall design, data collection, data analysis, and data visualization. The workshop will use Twitter as a primary running example of social media, as Twitter is arguably the most heavily studied social media platform by communication scholars. All training talks in the workshop will be a mixture of conceptual discussions and hands-on practices (using R language as the primary tool). As such, the participants are requested to bring with their notebook computers. For more detailed information, please visit http://weblab.com.cityu.edu.hk/blog/workshops/ica-2016-workshop/. You can download the registration form at http://tinyurl.com/mining2016 . New book announcement ‹ 'Social Media: Communication, Sharing and Visibility'
by Graham Meikle 09 Feb '16

09 Feb '16

Hi all Some list colleagues might be interested in my new book, Social Media: Communication, Sharing and Visibility<https://www.routledge.com/products/9780415712231>, which is published this month by Routledge. You can read the introduction on the Routledge website, and an extract from Chapter 6 is available here<http://culturedigitally.org/2016/02/first-look-graham-meikle-social-media-c…>, thanks to the lovely people at Culture Digitally. >From the back cover: Social media platforms have captured the attention and imagination of many millions of people, enabling their users to develop and display their creativity, to empathize with others, and to find connection, communication and communion. But they are also surveillance systems through which those users become complicit in their own commercial exploitation. In this accessible book, Graham Meikle explores the tensions between these two aspects of social media. >From Facebook and Twitter to Reddit and YouTube, Meikle examines social media as industries and as central sites for understanding the cultural politics of everyday life. Building on the new forms of communication and citizenship brought about by these platforms, he analyzes the meanings of sharing and privacy, internet memes, remix cultures and citizen journalism. Throughout, Social Media engages with questions of visibility, performance, platforms and users, and demonstrates how networked digital media are adopted and adapted in an environment built around the convergence of personal and public communication. "Engaging, sharp, and clairvoyant, Social Media: Communication, Sharing, and Visibility explains how social media enable connection, expression and awareness in everyday life, in ways that are both mundane and significant. A compelling read and a rigorous overview of what the social stands for, in social media." -Zizi Papacharissi, University of Illinois at Chicago. “Especially given the speed with which social media moves, and its ambiguous boundaries, finding a single narrative that brings together the theory and practice of social media is difficult. Graham Meikle has provided the early researcher of social media with a gift in this structured overview of the field, and a platform for further investigation and understanding.” -Alexander Halavais, Arizona State University. CFP for the themed issue of 'Subjectivity' on Radical Negativity.
by Ella Fegitz 09 Feb '16

09 Feb '16

Dear Colleagues, Please find below the latest call for papers for the special issue of the journal 'Subjectivity' on the theme of Radical Negativity. Many thanks for your interest and for sharing, The editors Ella Fegitz Tiffany Page Leila Whitley -------------------------------- *CALL FOR PAPERS: Themed issue on ‘Radical negativity’* Over the past decade, feminist and queer scholarship has begun to productively address the dark aspects of human subjectivity, such as unhappiness, irresponsibility, passivity, vulnerability, failure, shame, hesitancy, pain, dispossession, disappointment, rage, madness and depression, contributing to a rethinking and revaluation of the negative. Critique has focused on how normative subject positions are powerful mechanisms that reproduce dominant power structures such as whiteness, patriarchy, sexism, cissexism, heterosexism, and ableism. Such normative subject positions can demand or assume whiteness and thus position those who are non-white as ‘invaders’ in the space of the institution (Puwar 2009), present gender subservience as happiness (Ahmed 2010), and demand compulsory heterosexuality (Rich 1980). Resisting these (normative) demands placed on identities can form subjectivities perceived to be oriented around discomfort, refusal and pain. Borrowing from Eve Sedgwick, this special issue proposes that forms of the negative are “not distinctly ‘toxic’ parts of a group or individual identity that can be excised; they are instead integral to and residual in the processes by which identity itself is formed (2003, p.63).” In choosing to conceptualise subjectivity through the possibility of treating the negative as a viable and integral resource for resistance and a locus of social change, this issue will pay particular attention to the relation of negativity to resistant political practices. More specifically, we are interested in how the formation of subjectivities based on negative states and in relation to negative affects can be productive sites for political engagement. What is opened up or made possible by attending to the negative as an interruption to the force of restrictive social norms upon certain psyche and bodies? We welcome papers based in any discipline that significantly engage feminist and queer theory to respond to one or more of the following questions: 1. How can the negative be conceptualised as an interruption to the force of restrictive social norms? 2. How might rejecting the social compulsion toward positive affect allow for, and even become necessary to, resisting normative structures of power? 3. If we accept that power can differentially produce subjects, and that there is a relationship between power and resistance, how do these differences in turn utilise the negative, and what is the negative’s role in the capacity to resist? Possible topics include, but are not limited to, explorations of: - the construction of normative subjectivities and their effects on those deemed not to ‘fit’ - the construction of subjectivities in relation to narratives of trauma or shame - queer subversion in the face of ambivalence, incoherence and difficulty - the relation between politics and the construction of ‘woundedness’ - the distribution (and understanding) of vulnerability - the construction of health, happiness or ‘goodness’ - the racialization of affect - the gendering of affect - the navigation/rejection of gender norms and cis-sexism - the ways in which gender, sexuality, race and ability inflect the interpretation of affect more generally - deviance - name-calling Issue editors: Ella Fegitz, Tiffany Page and Leila Whitley. The deadline for first drafts of papers is 1 May 2016. Papers should be submitted in the first instance to radicalnegativity(a)gmail.com and should follow submission guidelines for Subjectivity ( http://www.palgrave-journals.com/sub/author_instructions.html) The editors are happy to discuss possible papers informally with potential contributors. CFP ANZCA 2016: The State of Digital Research Methods
by Jonathon Hutchinson 08 Feb '16

08 Feb '16

With apologies for cross-posting… Call for Papers, ANZCA 2016 Scraping the Political, Economical and Social: The state of digital methods for media and communication research Media and communication researchers have embraced the computational and digitisation turns (Rogers, 2014), which have notably seen the multidisciplinary inclusion of computer science with the humanities. From early methods that some argued over-claimed their impact, towards contemporary approaches that have been nuanced and improved by researchers and specialists, digital media methods are a useful collection of ‘how to’ tools to research social, economical and political sites. Globally, multiple researchers and institutions have developed cutting edge technologies that enable a large proportion of media and communication researchers to interrogate existing research sites in new ways. Additionally, these digital media methods have enabled researchers to find new research environments through data repositories, big data, digital media platforms, and social media, for example. Our interest in digital data will increase further as we see new cultural practices emerge through activities associated with drones, autonomous automobiles, sensors, and the internet of things. There remains a significant gap, however, in our current media and communication methodologies and current research technology. While we are able to identify conversations of public concern and how they inform ‘issues’ (Burgess & Matamoros, 2016), there remains a problem of how to integrate cultural context (humour, geography, history, etc.) into our understanding of large social media data sets. Further, the increasing shift away from text-based communication towards visual methods, i.e. Instagram, instigates a methodological conundrum (Highfield and Leaver, 2016). Finally, while the efforts of Wills (2016), Fordyce et al. (2016), Bruns et al. (2016) and Dowd (2016) advance our understanding of ontologies and typographies of social media data, further work needs to be undertaken to standardise our collection and analysis methods of digital media. Collectively, these issues present problems in data gathering techniques, research design, university ethics and access for digital media research methods. We are seeking contributions from scholars for a ‘progression session’ at the 2016 Australia and New Zealand Communication Association (ANZCA) that can address one or many of the following: 1. What are the cutting edge examples of digital media methods in media and communication research? 2. How can we integrate cultural contexts into the broad computational approach of digital platform research? 3. How can we as media and communication researchers access digital media tools for our own projects? 4. How should we approach ontologies and/or typologies for digital media research? 5. How do we negotiate these emerging research areas with our university ethics boards? Contributions to this panel will form the basis for a collected edition on digital media research methods. Please send your 400 word abstract, noting which area you are addressing, to Jonathon Hutchinson at jonathon.hutchinson(a)sydney.edu.au<mailto:Jonathon.hutchinson@sydney.edu.au> before 26 February, 2016.
