The postdoctoral scholar will become part of and contribute to a growing ecosystem that brings together faculty, postdoctoral researchers, visiting scholars, and graduate and undergraduate students to form a strong network that assists researchers in working across disciplines in the social sciences, as well as informatics, computers science, engineering, mathematics, geography, and environmental policy. Best, An --- Call for Submissions: Animal Memes/Humor for “A Global Perspective” at the Museum of the Moving Image Part of How Cats Took Over the Internet, curated by Jason Eppink While cats are regular fixtures on many internets around the globe, some cultures tend to focus on different animals, while others rarely engage with animals online at all. In collaboration with the Museum of the Moving Image, The Civic Beat, a global research collective looking at the creative side of civic technology, is assembling a map that examines some popular animals and memes, reflecting the vast diversity of internet cultures around the world. The map project is part of How Cats Took Over the Internet, a new exhibition curated by Jason Eppink that offers a cultural deconstruction of the popular animal online. The map continues with this deconstruction by looking at other animal memes and meme cultures in global contexts, taking a quirky topic to offer a deeper look at the many diverse cultures that exist on the global web. The map covers cultural appropriation of llamas in Mexico, Chile, and Peru; the grass mud horse in China; goats in Uganda, the United Kingdom and Brazil; cats in Japan and Pakistan; hyenas in Kenya; bears in Russia; and internet cultures (such as Iran and Syria) where animals don’t generally have a large presence. Each entry is written by a researcher with experience in the country’s online context. The map will continue to grow throughout the course of the exhibition, and it will have a second life on a dedicated web site at a to-be-determined future date. We are seeking meme submissions from internet researchers — academics, journalists, cultural critics, and others — in a wide variety of countries, including but not limited to: - Argentina - Australia - Canada - France - Germany - India - Indonesia - Italy - Malaysia - Nigeria - Saudi Arabia - South Africa - South Korea - and many others We’re particularly interested in submissions from the global south and emerging and underrepresented internet cultures. Submissions should include the following: - Your name - Institutional affiliation and title - Your research background - Country whose internet culture you are studying - A brief paragraph (3–5 sentences long) looking at an animal meme (or animal-based humor) most representative of the internet culture of the country you study and some of the social and cultural reasons for its popularity. (This will be trimmed down by the curators to about 2 sentences, but the extra content is helpful.) - A few representative meme images, with English translations (if needed) - Agreement to release the writing under a Creative Commons NC-BY-SA license. CALL FOR PAPERS Literary Boundary Work: Big Data and Comparative Non-Literature A seminar proposal for ACLA 2016, next March 17-20 at Harvard Abstracts by September 23 and further details at http://www.acla.org/node/5114 Questions to Scott Kushner, scottkushner(a)uri.edu Convened by Scott Kushner (Communication Studies, URI) and Jonathan Abel (Comp Lit, Penn State) Literary study draws its boundaries too narrowly. This is why as the discipline that continually seeks "literature plus ______” (another language, a new theory, a different medium), comparative literature shines brightest when it engages methodologies and objects from both within and beyond the traditional limits of literary studies. A new century brought novel forms of writing and criticism, though many practitioners of literary study still tread gingerly around status updates and comments, TEI and corpuses. Recent critical techniques for textual interpretation may reveal as illusory close reading's long monopoly on research and pedagogy. New textual cultures in everyday networked media continue to trouble the discipline's notions of the literary. Taken together, such shifts in methodology and object can reshape and rejuvenate literary studies. This seminar will ask what is new and what has stayed the same in comparative literature. Papers will map emergent and resilient methodologies, survey the current boundaries of the field, and inventory the professional practices that legitimize the discipline. As scholars apply new tools to new texts in new ways, what continues to hold comparative literature together and distinguish it from neighboring fields?

*CALL FOR PAPERS* *Beyond IRBs: Designing Ethical Review Processes for Big Data Research* In the age of Big Data, innovative uses of information are continuously emerging in a wide variety of contexts. Increasingly, researchers at companies, not-for-profit organizations and academic institutions use individuals’ personal data as raw material for analysis and research. For research on data subject to the Common Rule, institutional review boards (IRBs) provide an essential ethical check on experimentation. Still, even academic researchers lack standards around the collection and use of online data sources, and data held by companies or in non-federally funded organizations is not subject to such procedures. Research standards for data can vary widely as a result. Companies and non-profits have become subject to public criticism and may elect to keep research results confidential to avoid public scrutiny or potential legal liability. To prevent unethical data research or experimentation, experts have proposed a range of solutions, including the creation of “consumer subject review boards,”[1] <http://www.futureofprivacy.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=12099&action=edit#_ft…> formal privacy review boards,[2] <http://www.futureofprivacy.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=12099&action=edit#_ft…> private IRBs,[3] <http://www.futureofprivacy.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=12099&action=edit#_ft…> and other ethical processes implemented by individual companies.[4] <http://www.futureofprivacy.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=12099&action=edit#_ft…> Organizations and researchers are increasingly encouraged to pursue internal or external review mechanisms to vet, approve and monitor data experimentation and research. However, many questions remain concerning the desirable structure of such review bodies as well as the content of ethical frameworks governing data use. In addition, considerable debate lingers around the proper role of consent in data research and analysis, particularly in an online context; and it is unclear how to apply basic principles of fairness to selective populations that are subject to research. To address these challenges, the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) is hosting an academic workshop supported by the National Science Foundation, which will discuss ethical, legal, and technical guidance for organizations conducting research on personal information. *Authors are invited to submit papers for presentation at a full-day program to take place on December 10, 2015*. Successful submissions may address the following issues: - What are the key ethical questions surrounding data-driven research and consumer testing? Should analysis of online data be treated differently than subject testing generally? Which issues warrant additional review? - What lessons can be learned from existing institutional review boards (IRBs), including both academic panels and standalone private entities? Which features of existing IRB structures are applicable to corporate and non-profit big data research? - Which existing government or industry practices offer insights into how researchers can approach ethical questions for Big Data? - How should organizations structure an ethical review process? Which substantive requirements and principles should govern it? How should organizations ensure independent review? Could review mechanisms be wholly internal or must external stakeholders or committees be involved? - What is the proper scope of review? While IRBs currently focus on human-subject testing, Big Data raises a different set of concerns focusing on subsequent analysis and novel uses of data. Which factors are essential for consideration in an ethical process? - What is the proper role of consent in data-driven research environment? New paper on using Facebook as a research tool

It constitutes a large and diverse pool of participants, who can be selectively recruited for both online and offline studies. Additionally, it facilitates data collection by storing detailed records of its users’ demographic profiles, social interactions, and behaviors. With participants’ consent, these data can be recorded retrospectively in a convenient, accurate, and inexpensive way. Based on our experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining multiple Facebook-based psychological studies that attracted over 10 million participants, we demonstrate how to recruit participants using Facebook, incentivize them effectively, and maximize their engagement. We also outline the most important opportunities and challenges associated with using Facebook for research, provide several practical guidelines on how to successfully implement studies on Facebook, and finally, discuss ethical considerations.
