Algorithms are often presented as guarantors of objectivity, particularly on controversial issues like security or risk assessment. But not even algorithms can achieve the impossible, that is, applying objective logic, precision and transparency to an opaque world full of irreducible ambiguity and subjectivity. The way in which data is generated and processed affects the results. In other words, algorithms and the underlying forms of rationality are biased and so is the world they help to create. This raises pressing questions regarding their methodology, their politics and their efficiency and the need to examine their intended and unintended consequences. The conference will address questions of rationality, governance and, prediction and modelling, but also look at agency of humans and new generative strategies. We have experienced what could be regarded as three waves of protests from the early 1990s to the present. Each of these waves is connected both by the transformations in global capitalism and the rise of the digital age, while still displaying differences or rather developments in movement-based organizing. Together, however, we can conceive these three waves as part of one broader epoch of contention. Those particular waves of contention are: Global Social Justice, Occupy/Arab Spring, Syriza/Podemos. In this session, we propose to look at the logics of these waves of protest (or generations of digital activism) in order to explore their similarities and differences. The goal would be to mine history assuming a diachronic perspective, but more concretely to understand the strengths and weaknesses of this epoch of contention as we watch the current wave of struggle unfold. Some of the questions that will be tackled in the session are: * How have capitalist transformations informed the emergence of the current epoch of contention and how has the activists relation to communication technologies evolved and shaped the logics of protests and mobilizations? * Can we conceive of an underlying meta-logics of movement politics informing the waves of protests and how are they best conceptualized, similar as well as differently enacted? * What has been the evolution of the role of alternative media in an oversaturated media environment where corporate social media are increasingly dominating the digital activism scenario? * What are the challenges that social movements and their communication face when they crystallize into political parties? * What lessons have we learned from the analysis of this epoch of contention and what are the future horizons of digital activism and protest? I have found that my best indexer is me. I hired a pro for our first book, Social Structures, and she did such a bad job, that I did it over again myself. I have done my/our 3 subsequent books myself. Including Networked (check it yourself) I found it takes a day. A big screen helps (I have 27"). I go thru the book and identify indexicable items. And keep many pages up on the same big screen. (I think I achieved 6 or 8 with Networked. And because I know the book and the concepts, it works. Digital Literacy is the ability to access, analyse, evaluate and produce messages in all the various formats of communication. It is a necessary skill set for living and participating in what is referred to as the “information society”. The term Digital Literacy does not solely refer to technical skills, but also to the various combinations of those skills, and to a broader socio-cultural context. It is, therefore, an important key concept which involves diverse pathways to highlight different cultural and social points of view in contemporary society. The conference will address the issue of digital literacy by focussing on three main areas: (1) Policies that promote the development of these skills; (2) Research on the necessary skills for efficiently engaging in digital environments in an informed manner; (3) Experiences and best practices related to the teaching and strengthening of the skills needed for the critical use of digital resources. Hey there, Can someone please help me in unsubscribing please? I have gone through the steps and yet I still am subscribed. I have done this 4 times now. I click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email that is sent to me, it takes me to a page and I click unsubscribe after putting in my email address. You might also look into David Phillips’s 2002 essay “Negotiating the Digital Closet” (and probably his other work). Some of the contributors to his and O’Riordan’s collection _Queer Online_ use the phrase as well. Gorkemli has used the phrase in terms of lesbian and gay activism online in Turkey. Jonathan Alexander and Elizabeth Losh’s chapter "A YouTube of One’s Own?’: ‘Coming Out’ Videos as Rhetorical Action” in the collection _LGBT Identity and New Online Media_ might also be useful.
