Ethics of using hacked data.
by Nathaniel Poor 15 Oct '15

15 Oct '15

Hello list- I recently got into a discussion with a colleague about the ethics of using hacked data, specifically the Patreon hacked data (see here: http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/10/gigabytes-of-user-data-from-hack-of… ). He and I do crowdfunding work, and had wanted to look at Patreon, but as far as I can tell they have no easy hook into all their projects (for scraping), so, to me this data hack was like a gift! But he said there was no way we could use it. We aren't doing sentiment analysis or anything, we would use aggregated measures like funding levels and then report things like means and maybe a regression, so there would be no identifiable information whatsoever derived from the hacked data in any of our resulting work (we might go to the site and pull some quotes). I looked at the AoIR ethics guidelines ( http://aoir.org/reports/ethics2.pdf ), and didn't see anything specifically about hacked data (I don't think "hacked" is the best word, but I don't like "stolen" either, but those are different discussions). One relevant line I noticed was this one: "If access to an online context is publicly available, do members/participants/authors perceive the context to be public?" (p. 8) So, the problem with the data is that it's the entire website, so some was private and some was public, but now it's all public and everyone knows it's public. To me, I agree that a lot of the data in the data-dump had been intended to be private -- apparently, direct messages are in there -- but we wouldn't use that data (it's not something we're interested in). We'd use data like number of funders and funding levels and then aggregate everything. I see that some of it was meant to be private, but given the entire site was hacked and exported I don't see how currently anyone could have an expectation of privacy any more. I'm not trying to torture the definition, it's just that it was private until it wasn't. I can see that some academic researchers -- at least those in computer security -- would be interested in this data and should be able to publish in peer reviewed journals about it, in an anonymized manner (probably as an example of "here's a data hack like what we are talking about, here's what hackers released"). I also think that probably every script kiddie has downloaded the data, as has every grey and black market email list spammer, and probably every botnet purveyor (for passwords) and maybe even the hacking arm of the Chinese army and the NSA. My point here is that if we were to use the data in academic research we wouldn't be publicizing it to nefarious people who would misuse it since all of those people already have it. We could maybe help people who want to use crowdfunding some (hopefully!) if we have some results. (I guess I don't see that we would be doing any harm by using it.) So, what do people think? Did I miss something in the AoIR guidelines? I realize I don't think it's clear either way, or I wouldn't be asking, so probably the answers will point to this as a grey area (so why do I even ask, I am not sure). But I'm not looking for "You can't use it because it's hacked," because I don't think that explains anything. I could counter that with "It is publicly available found data," because it is, although I don't think that's the best reply either. Both lack nuance. -Nat -- Nathaniel Poor, Ph.D. http://natpoor.blogspot.com

Seeking literature recommendations: privacy and big data
by Oltmann, Shannon M 15 Oct '15

15 Oct '15

Hello everyone! I am embarking on a new research direction, studying the intersections and relationships of big data and privacy. I have done a preliminary literature review, (and have a solid grounding in privacy in general) but would like any suggestions of must-read research. Also, if you have ideas about under-explored questions in this realm, I'd love to talk about that with you. -Shannon Dr. Shannon M. Scraping from Instagram
by Liam Pomfret 14 Oct '15

14 Oct '15

Hello all, I'm currently involved in a project looking at consumer responses to social marketing campaigns in social media. I've been asked to try and scrape some data from Instagram relating to a campaign account and hashtag (likes, text of comments, etc), however I'm not having much luck in doing that. It seems like a recent Instagram site redesign may have broken a number of the tools that would've been effective previously. Was just wondering if anyone here might be able to point me towards something which is still working? If possible, preferably something that can be used effectively without the user having a lot of knowledge or skill at programming. mHealth CFP for Mobile Media and Communication (Sage)
by Rich Ling 13 Oct '15

13 Oct '15

Dear all, Mobiile Media and Communication is issuing a call for papers for: *mHealth Use and Interventions: * *How Far Have We Come, and Where Are We Heading? * Guest editors are Constanze Rossmann, Holley Wilkin, and Komathi Ale, Along with the increasing penetration of mobile media and smart devices, the use of mobile media for health information and services (mHealth) has gained considerable relevance, both in developed and developing countries. A decade of developments, interventions, and evaluations has not only guided the design and application of mHealth, but also points towards future directions in mobile media research. mHealth can be applied to several areas, such as health promotion and disease prevention, disease monitoring and self-monitoring, diagnostic and treatment support, communication and training between healthcare workers, and disease and epidemic outbreak tracking. mHealth apps and interventions embrace a wide range of technological features, ranging from mobile telecommunication and text messaging and the use of features such as cameras, GPS, and accelerometers to multimedia applications, games, and connections to other devices such as glucometers, pedometers, and smartwatches. The potentials and limitations of mHealth are evolving as studies increasingly disseminate evidence of use and impact globally. For instance, mhealth offers the opportunity to reach certain target groups easily, to contact them repeatedly, to address people individually and at relatively low costs, and to offer interactive and tailored health communication. On the other hand, in spite of the growing ubiquity of mobile media technologies, certain groups remain disadvantaged in access to basic healthcare (e.g., hard-to-reach, resource-poor populations). Further problems arise around the value of mHealth apps, data security, actual adoption, and a general lack of attention to nuances in mHealth deployments. Despite the fact that there has been considerable research in this area, many questions continue to remain unsolved. Bringing these problems and gaps to light will lead us into the next decade of relevant and quality mHealth research. This calls for theoretically sound, methodologically deliberate and sustainable evidence for scalability, informed by realities of both the developed and developing regions. Essentially, this special section on mHealth use and interventions puts forth the question: How far have we come, and where are we heading? The call can be viewed at: http://mmc.sagepub.com/site/includefiles/MMC_mHealth.pdf Rich Ling

PhD plea: Theory Recommendations for On-to-Offline Harassment Research?
by Paula Todd 13 Oct '15

13 Oct '15

Hi AoIR-ers, With apologies for cross-posting. Will be very sorry to miss Phoenix this month (Korea was amazing last year) but the US dollar is a Canadian nightmare. What a difference a year (and oil) makes. Enjoy! *Query: *I'm researching the effects of negative online role-modelling (including sexist/racists memes, videos and social media) on incidents of *offline* harassment. I am looking at adults, particularly women, rather than youth digital-schoolyard bullying. I'm inching through Critical Discourse Analysis as a theoretical framework, but wonder whether anyone imagines a more helpful framework(s). eg. feminist theory. Is there good work/research that should be consulted? New to PhD studies, so any help would be gratefully accepted, and shared with permission only. Best, Paula *PAULA TODD, *B.A., LL.B. , PhD Candidate@YorkU Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Issue Mapping book by Rogers et al.
by Richard Rogers 13 Oct '15

13 Oct '15

Dear Colleagues I have 15 gratis copies available of my new book, written together with Natalia Sanchez and Aleksandra Kil. If you would like one in paperback, please email me with your postal address. You can also download the open access pdf version, http://www.oapen.org/search?identifier=569806 Best regards Richard Rogers Issue Mapping for an Ageing Europe by Richard Rogers, Natalia Sanchez-Querubin and Aleksandra Kil Amsterdam University Press, 2015 Issue Mapping for an Ageing Europe is a seminal guide to mapping social and political issues with digital methods. The issue at stake concerns the imminent crisis of an ageing Europe and its impact on the contemporary welfare state. The book brings together three leading approaches to issue mapping: Bruno Latour's social cartography, Ulrich Beck's risk cartography and Jeremy Crampton's critical neo-cartography. These modes of inquiry are put into practice with digital methods for mapping the ageing agenda, including debates surrounding so-called 'old age', cultural philosophies of ageing, itinerant care workers, not to mention European anti-ageing cuisine. Issue Mapping for an Ageing Europe addresses an urgent social issue with new media research tools. http://en.aup.nl/books/9789089647160-issue-mapping-for-an-ageing-europe.html Prof. Richard Rogers Professor of New Media & Digital Culture Department Chair, Media Studies University of Amsterdam http://home.medewerker.uva.nl/r.a.rogers/ http://www.digitalmethods.net/

CFP Learning@Scale 2016: Full papers deadline extended (Nov 1, 2015)
by Vitomir Kovanovic 12 Oct '15

12 Oct '15

** apologies for cross-posting ** After discussions with the organizers of LAK2016, we have agreed on a consistent paper deadline for both our co-located conferences. So you now have a little more time to really polish your L@S papers! Important Dates -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nov 1, 2015 : Full papers due Dec 14, 2015: Notifications of acceptance of Full Papers: Dec 14, 2015 The conference is at the intersection of computer science and the learning sciences, seeking to improve practice and theories of learning at scale. Strong submissions typically build on relevant research and frameworks beyond a single home discipline. The program committee is multidisciplinary and will expect that contributions expand on the state of the art of several relevant source literature is considered. Topics -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We solicit paper submissions reporting on rigorous research on methodologies, studies, analyses, tools, or technologies for learning at scale. Learning at Scale includes MOOCs, games (including massively multiplayer online games), citizen science communities, and other types of learning environments which (a) provide learning experiences to large number of learners and/or (b) produce detailed, high volume data about the learning process. Papers that tackle specific aspects of scale are particularly encouraged, for example, papers that deal with learning or educational phenomena that can only occur, be supported, or be observed with very large numbers of students, or in which the system improves after being exposed to data from previous use by many students. Example topics include but are not limited to: * Usability studies and effectiveness studies of design elements for students or instructors, including: * Status indicators of student progress * Status indicators of instructor effectiveness * Tools and pedagogy to promote community, support learning, or increase retention in at-scale environments * Log analysis of student behavior, e.g.: * Assessing reasons for student outcome as determined by modifying tool design * Modeling students based on responses to variations in tool design * Evaluation strategies such as quiz or discussion forum design * Instrumenting systems and data representation to capture relevant indicators of learning. * Personalization and adaptation, based on log data, user modeling, or choice. * Studies of applications of existing learning theories to the MOOC context (peer learning, project based learning, etc.). * Informing theories of learning at scale. * Large online learning in the developing world * New tools and techniques for learning at scale, including: * Games for learning at scale * Automated feedback tools (for essay writing, programming, etc) * Automated grading tools * Tools for interactive tutoring * Tools for learner modeling * Interfaces for harnessing learning data at scale * Innovations in platforms for supporting learning at scale * Tools to support for capturing, managing learning data * Tools and techniques for managing privacy of learning data * Investigation of observable student behaviors and their correlation if any with learning, e.g.: * What do more successful learners do more of? * What do more successful instructors do more of? * Self- and co-regulation of learning at scale * Collaborative learning in courses that have scale * Depth and retention of learning and understanding * Improvements to learning, community, and pedagogy in large-scale in-person and blended online and in-person courses * Instructional principles for learning at scale * Facilitation of informal subcommunities Paper Submissions -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We invite full paper, shorter papers reporting on work-in-progress, and demonstrations. ### Full Papers Full papers must not exceed 10 pages (shorter is fine) and must use the ACM CHI Archive Format, available in latex[1] and Word[2]. Submissions must be in PDF format, written in English, contain original work and not be under review for any other venue while under review for this conference. All papers should be submitted through the EasyChair. In order to increase high quality papers and independent merit, the evaluation process will be double blind. The papers submitted for review MUST NOT contain the authors' names, affiliations, or any information that may disclose the authors' identity (this information is to be restored in the camera-ready version upon acceptance). Please replace author names and affiliations with Xs on submitted papers. In particular, in the version submitted for review please avoid explicit auto-references, such as "in [1] we show" -- consider "in [1] it is shown". I.e., you should cite your own relevant previous work, so that a reviewer can access it and see the new contributions, but yet the text should be written so that it does not state that the cited work belongs to the authors. ### Work-in-Progress A Work-in-Progress (WiP) is a concise report of recent findings or other types of innovative or thought-provoking work that has not yet reached a level of completion that would warrant submission of a full paper. Topics are the same as those listed for full papers. At the conference, all accepted WiP submissions will be presented in poster form. Selected WiPs may be invited for oral presentation during the conference. Rejected full-papers can be resubmitted as WiP and will be evaluated accordingly. Formatting: Work-in-Progress submissions 4 pages or fewer in length in the Extended Abstracts Format[3] and submitted as a PDF file. Due to the very rapid selection process we cannot offer any extensions to the deadline. WiP submissions are not anonymous and should therefore include all author names, affiliations and contact information. If accepted, you should expect to prepare a poster to present at the conference venue. WiP submissions should be submitted through the EasyChair. ### Demonstrations Demonstrations show aspects of learning at scale in an interactive hands-on form. A live demonstration is a great opportunity to communicate ideas and concepts in a powerful way that a regular presentation cannot. We invite demonstrations of learning and analytical environments and other systems that have direct relevance to learning at scale. We especially encourage authors of accepted papers and industrial partners to showcase their technologies using this format. Demonstration submissions are 2 pages or fewer in length in the Extended Abstracts Format[3] and submitted as a PDF file. A demonstration proposal should address two components: * The merit and nature of the demonstrated technology. If the proposed demonstration is associated with a Full Paper or a WiP submission, please point to the title of the submission instead of repeating the information here. * Details of how the demo will be executed in practice, and how visitors will interact with it during the conference. Proposals for demonstrations should be submitted through the EasyChair. ### Archival Proceedings Full papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by the ACM Press in the ACM Digital Library. Work-in-Progress and Demonstration papers will appear in a separate part of the conference proceedings. The status of Work-in-Progress paper will be akin to what CHI describes as "semi-archival", meaning the results reported in the WIP must be original, but copyright is retained by the authors and the material can be used as the basis for future publications in ACM venues as long as there are significant revisions from the original. Proceedings from prior years can be accessed here: * L@S 2014 Proceedings (http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2556325) * L@S 2015 Proceedings (http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2724660) ### Submission Instructions Full Papers and Work in Progress should be submitted at EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=las2016) Inquiries -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please direct all inquiries to: pc-chairs(a)learningatscale.acm.org Organization -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conference Chair: Jeff Haywood, the University of Edinburgh, UK Program Co-Chairs: Vincent Aleven, Carnegie Mellon University, USA Judy Kay, University of Sydney, Australia Ido Roll, University of British Columbia, Canada Local Organization Chair: Dragan Gasevic, the University of Edinburgh, UK Program Committee: Tiffany Barnes, North Carolina State University, USA Marie Bienkowski, SRI International, USA Gautam Biswas, Vanderbilt University, USA Ulrike Cress, Knowledge Media Research Center, Germany Pierre Dillenbourg, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland Douglas Fisher Vanderbilt University, USA Armando Fox, University of California at Berkeley, USA Dragan Gasevic, University of Edinburgh, UK Art Graesser, University of Memphis, USA Philip Guo, University of Rochester, USA Marti Hearst, University of California at Berkeley, USA Daniel Hickey, Indiana University, USA Ulrich Hoppe, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany Juho Kim, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA Kenneth Koedinger, Carnegie Mellon University, USA Chinmay Kulkarni, Stanford University, USA Marcia Linn, University of California at Berkeley, USA Marsha Lovett, Carnegie Mellon University, USA Rose Luckin, The London Knowledge Lab, UK Robert Miller, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA John Mitchell, Stanford University, USA Antonija Mitrović, University of Canterbury, New Zealand Zachary Pardos, University of California at Berkeley, USA Beverly Park Woolf, University of Massachusetts, USA Jeremy Roschelle, SRI International, USA Carolyn Rose, Carnegie Mellon University, USA Daniel Russell, Google, USA Mehran Sahami, Stanford University, USA Eileen Scanlon, Open University, UK Daniel Seaton, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA Karen Swan, Univ of Illinois, Springfield, USA Candace Thille, Stanford University, USA Astrid Wichmann, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany [1] https://github.com/sigchi/Document-Formats [2] http://www.sigchi.org/publications/chipubform/sigchi-paper-format-2016/view [3] http://chi2015.acm.org/authors/format/#extendedformat -- The University of Edinburgh is a charitable body, registered in Scotland, with registration number SC005336.
