INC survey about reading & digital publishing formats
by Geert Lovink 07 Oct '15

07 Oct '15

Dear all, many of you have, at some point, ordered an INC publication or downloaded pdfs and epub from site or read our publications online. We would love it if you do something back and fill out our survey, which ultimately aims to improve our (online) publication services. Best, Geert — Hello, The Institute of Network Cultures has been producing various kinds of publications for years, which are all available online on http://networkcultures.org/publications/ and http://www.publishinglab.nl/publications/. We are approaching you because you have received INC publications in the past. In order to improve the browsability and the readability of the publications, two interns, Josip Batinic (MA New Media and Digital Culture, UvA, Netherlands) and Léna Robin (MA Graphic Design, Haute École des Arts du Rhin, France) are currently working on a new proposal for the website. To do so in the best way possible, they have put together a survey regarding reading habits and browsing preferences, in order to have a good overview of the situation (see link below). We hope that you will be able to help them take digital INC publications to the next level. The survey should take less than 9 minutes to complete. Can you send this link to your students and colleagues? Here is the link to this online survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1K01KaxavslYtFLJN3AjhWsNK3uH-tnBs2RjVlIy4j4… Thank you for participating! final CFP AAG 2016: Toward a geographical software studies
by ryan burns 06 Oct '15

*Toward a geographical software studies*A series of sessions for the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers <http://www.aag.org/annualmeeting> in San Francisco, March 29-April 2, 2016 Ryan Burns <http://burnsr77.github.io/> (Temple University) Nick Lally <http://www.nicklally.com/> (University of Wisconsin–Madison) A growing body of recent geographic scholarship has focused its attention on software and algorithms. Some of these studies analyze geographic technologies —GIS and the geoweb, for example— as such, while others investigate a myriad of digital technologies that have become ubiquitous within the spaces of everyday life. These software/code objects interact with and modulate the world in complex ways, enact processes that connect humans and nonhumans, and become entangled with social, cultural, political, and economic systems. Moreover, software created to visualize data is used to produce knowledge about urban environments and everyday life, but obscure the processes and contexts which underlie its development. Engaging these topics, geographers have developed concepts like the “automatic production of space” (Thrift and French 2002), “software-sorted geographies” (Graham 2005), and “code/space” (Kitchin and Dodge 2011) to describe how software and space are co-constituted in the contemporary world. Productive research is building on these topics to explore new ways geographies are produced (Rose, Degen, and Melhuish 2014), governed (Amoore 2011), materialized, represented (Woodward et al. 2015), and lived through software (Kinsley 2014). This session seeks to bring together a range of spatial thinkers who are producing new studies, theories, and methods for understanding and producing software. We welcome submissions that address all facets of software: the context of its production, its internal operational logics, the material work it does in the world, and its spatial distribution of social and political effects. Suggested themes could include: • Radical, feminist, or postcolonial political theories of software, software production, and/or hacking. What are the liberatory potentials/limits of coding or software and its critiques? • The political economy of software, code, attentional economies, and the audience as commodity. • Methodological contributions for the study of software (deconstruction, ethnography, reading code, reverse-engineering, archival research, hacking, writing software, visual studies, understanding processes, online research, etc) • Software and visual and affective epistemology. • The materiality of software and the work it does in the world (the production of space, embodiment, urbanization, social sorting, securitization, infrastructure, etc). Re: [Air-L] Air-L Digest, Vol 135, Issue 4

Kevin, While I am sure this is not the earliest reference to this idea, it was certainly a core argument in Shoshanna Zuboff’s 1988 book “In the Age of the Smart Machine.” It’s been a long time since I looked at the book, but as I recall, she talks at length about the role of information byproducts generated computer-mediated work to better manage organizations, not always in positive ways from the perspective of workers. To me, this is fundamentally an argument about “digital trace data." best, Chip Charles Steinfield Department of Media and Information Michigan State University East Lansing, MI 48840 USA +1 517 432 8651 steinfie(a)msu.edu On Oct 5, 2015, at 6:00 PM, air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org wrote: > > -----Original Message----- > From: Air-L [mailto:air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org <mailto:air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org>] On Behalf Of Kevin G Crowston > Sent: Monday, October 05, 2015 11:17 AM > To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org <mailto:air-l@listserv.aoir.org> > Subject: [Air-L] "Definitive" citation for the concept of digital trace data? > > An argument for studies of online behaviour is that the systems collect records of what people do and that such digital trace data provide a rich source of evidence for all kinds of studies. "Definitive" citation for the concept of digital trace data?
by Kevin G Crowston 05 Oct '15

05 Oct '15

An argument for studies of online behaviour is that the systems collect records of what people do and that such digital trace data provide a rich source of evidence for all kinds of studies. I’m trying to trace back that idea but it seems so taken for granted that there’s often not a citation. So I wondered what people consider the definitive citation for that idea, and for the term "trace data” in this context more specifically. For example, there’s a 2008 handbook article: Welser, H. T., Smith, M., Fisher, D., and Gleave, E. 2008. "Distilling Digital Traces: Computational Social Science Approaches to Studying the Internet," in The Sage Handbook of Online Research Methods, N. Fielding, R.M. Lee and G. Blank (eds.). London, England: SAGE Publications, Ltd, pp. 116–141. But I suspect there are even earlier sources. ELD16 Announces Call for Proposals - 11/9/15 deadline
by AJ Kelton 05 Oct '15

05 Oct '15

The 6th Annual Emerging Learning Design Conference (ELD15) is accepting proposals for its 2016 conference, to be held June 2nd & 3rd, 2016, on the campus of Montclair State University. *PROPOSAL DEADLINE – NOVEMBER 9th, 2015. See below for details.* *All proposals received by the above deadline, whether eventually accepted or not, will be included in a drawing for a complimentary ELD16 full registration.* - For the Call for Proposals Submission Form – click HERE <https://utk.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_ddmxihPwjHqzyIZ> - For the ELD16 Session Types – click HERE <http://eld.montclair.edu/eld-call-for-proposals/session-types/> - For the Call for Proposals FAQ – click HERE <http://eld.montclair.edu/eld-call-for-proposals/eld-call-for-proposals-faq/> The theme for this year’s conference is *Adopt & Adapt: Connecting Learning to Life* *ROLLING SUBMISSION / EARLY ACCEPTANCE MODEL* ELD uses a “rolling submission” model for proposals: every proposal will be reviewed and given feedback within 2 weeks of submission. Your submission will either be accepted or you’ll be provided feedback from our reviewers and offered an opportunity to revise and resubmit. We’ll continue this process of accepting or giving constructive feedback to proposals until all presentation slots are filled. Submissions will still be accepted after November 9th, but they will be considered in the second round of proposals. We will work with those who submitted by the deadline and then look toward later submissions to complete the program, should presentation slots still be available. Why this model? Two main reasons: we seen that having revise-and-resubmit cycles make our conference’s presentations the best they can be for our attendees, and accepting excellent proposals as they arrive is a great way to let our prospective audience know what to look forward to even before the whole program is finalized. In addition, this model is easier on our reviewers as we don’t get a rush of proposals on deadline day. How do you submit a proposal? Go here <http://eld.montclair.edu/eld-call-for-proposals/eld-call-for-proposals-faq/> to read some brief instructions on what we need in your submission, and then go HERE <https://utk.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_ddmxihPwjHqzyIZ> and supply that information. We’ll be in touch to confirm your submission was complete, and then let you know within a couple weeks the response from our reviewers. -- ----- AJ Kelton Director of Emerging & Instructional Technology College of Humanities and Social Sciences - Montclair State University Doctoral Candidate Educational Communication and Technology - New York University ---------- Emerging Learning Design 2016 http://eld.montclair.edu Twitter: @ELDConf <http://twitter.com/ELDConf> ---------- http://www.ajkelton.net Twitter: @aj_kelton <http://twitter.com/aj_kelton>
