Dear AoIRists, I'm very pleased to announce the publication of the fourth issue of The Journal of Media Innovations (Volume 2, Issue 2): <https://www.journals.uio.no/index.php/TJMI/index> As you can see by the Table of Contents below, our articles range from Scandinavia (Bergen, Norway; Åland, Finland) to Flanders and Spain – and take up diverse theoretical and empirical approaches to: 2nd screen uses, public service media, local newspapers, and innovative approaches to designing “hyper-local” journalism for novel forms of radio. At the same time, the last three papers share a normative interest in journalism and communication as critical to democratic societies, and, more broadly, continue the focus on innovation in journalism as a primary emphasis of The Journal of Media Innovations (see especially Vol. 1, issue 2). THE SYMPOSIUM Academic research has long depended on the public for data collection and interpretation, as in the case of citizen science, where local expertise is vital to understanding environmental phenomena. The Internet has produced new forms of collective intelligence, which industry and other actors have been quick to recognize. Companies like Threadless and iStockphoto, as well as sites like Google and Wikipedia, are models built on the “wisdom of crowds” that emerge from what Yochai Benkler calls “hybrid media ecologies.” Virtual collaborators fill out surveys, transcribe audio, code video, and provide editorial content. Increasingly, humanities and social science research is turning to networked knowledge production, enabling new scales and modes of public participation in academic research. This symposium will explore the state of crowdsourcing in the social sciences and humanities. What are its premises, promises, and risks? How rigorous and reliable is crowd intelligence? What are the implications for meanings of expertise? What labor practices does it generate or displace? What communities are formed by academic crowdsourcing? And how does it change the relationship between the public and academic research? The half-day event will open with an introductory keynote presentation, to be followed by two panels, and close with a buffet lunch. Keynote speaker Daren Brabham<https://dbrabham.wordpress.com/>, University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, will trace the evolution of crowdsourcing and its various forms, and address most recent developments. Panel 1, “Talking from experience,” will feature scholars discussing their work using crowdsourcing methods, and the relationship between project designs and outcomes. (See the Call for Proposals link below for an invitation to submit an abstract.) Panel 2, “Theoretical considerations,” will explore the cultural and social implications of crowdsourcing in the humanities and social sciences. A central aim of the sessions is to theorize the connection between concrete aspects of project design and the ramifications in academia and the civic domain. We invite all levels of scholars interested in or already engaged in crowdsourcing projects in the humanities and social sciences. The aim is to educate, question, provoke, and foster exchange between practice and theory. We look forward to your participation! CFP Gender and Games Trilogy seeking Book Chapter Proposals

Acknowledging that gaming acts as a key – and heavily contested -- site of subject formation in the lives of those who play, we are soliciting explorations of the gendered practices enacted in relation to games and gaming technologies. In doing so, we hope to provide a comprehensive (though by no means exhaustive) account of the increasingly significant roles gaming plays in the reproduction, and possible subversion, of contemporary regimes of gender-based power. We are seeking chapter contributors for a "trilogy" of edited volumes that collect and curate previously unpublished scholarship looking at gender and games. We envision three volumes: one each on femininity, masculinity and genderqueer identities, respectively. In particular, we are concerned with theoretically-grounded explorations of the following: ● the relationships -- identification, idealization, appropriation, negotiation, rejection, contestation, etc -- between representations/performances of gender in games and their uptake in gaming practices and cultures; ● the gendered dynamics and communicative practices of cultures coalescing around particular games and gaming pursuits; ● the historical and/or contemporary processes by which gaming technologies (platforms, peripherals, software, etc) become (dis)associated with particular subject positions; ● gendered patterns of privilege and inequity that characterize gaming-related labor, including (but not limited to) game production, modding, e-sports, and spectatorship; ● the persistent and limiting dichotomization of gender in gaming-related texts, discourses and practices; ● the intersections of gender and other systems of oppression, such as race, sexuality, ability, age, and socio-economic status, with regards to any of these above facets. Contributions from all academic disciplines and geographic regions are invited, and emerging and unaffiliated scholars are encouraged as the trilogy aims to bring different voices and perspectives into conversation. However, the audience of the work is academic and scholarly style and rigor are expected. To that end, all chapters will undergo peer review and willingness to accept criticism and undertake revisions is necessary. Also note that we can ensure double blind peer-review of your chapter if requested, but, we also ask that each chapter contributor be willing to peer-review one other chapter submitted to the trilogy to help expedite this. For consideration, please email an abstract of 250 - 500 words and a short bio statement of no more than 100 words to the editors at ( gender.games.trilogy(a)gmail.com) no later than October 15. The abstract should provide a clear summary of the proposed chapter’s thesis and outline of its structure. Indicate which volume of the trilogy you are submitting to in the subject line of your email. Climate Scepticism in the blogosphere

Dear all, I was wondering if anyone could help me with a literature review I am doing on climate change discourse in the blogosphere in the US, Russia and Germany. I am fairly familiar with the US literature on climate change journalism and a little on new media, but I am only just starting to look at Germany and Russia. I am told there is really very little on the topic of Russian new media generally, let alone on the subject of climate change, so if anyone has any ideas or advice I'd be really grateful for the insights. (I don't personally speak Russian, but I am working with a colleague who is a native speaker). With regards to Germany, I have found the odd paper, but I don't have access to very much non-english language literature on this topic. Any recommendations for English language papers on German new media and climate change or any citations for German literature that would be worth pestering some German colleagues for would be gratefully recieved. Our aim is to take quite a discourse analytical approach and explore the differences between imaginings of climate change in these three countries, particularly with regard to the Cold War and to climate scepticism. If anyone has any thoughts, we'd be interested to hear them. Since then, information communication technologies have become integrally embedded into much of everyday life. The speed of these developments has also obfuscated many changes and processes that now envelop and define the urban experience. This includes changes in systems of abstract spatial representation through geographic information, and the economies surrounding this information as a commodity. The representations which are produced and mediated through this digital information are now contributing to an urban space that is densely digitally layered (Graham, M., M. Zook, and A. Boulton. 2013). These digital ‘abstract’ spaces are essential to the production and re-production of our socio-economic world (Lefebvre, 1991). From Wikipedia to Google Maps and TripAdvisor, the code and content that relates to a building is now potentially as important as its bricks and mortar. These processes raise new questions of spatial justice and the urbanization of information: Which spaces are seen, and which are hidden? How is information produced, for whom, and who consumes it? How does information change material places? Who are the powerful actors in these events, and who are powerless? And finally, is the broader concept of an 'informational right to the city' now required? If so, how should it be envisioned and put into practice? This session invites submissions concerned with the production, consumption, and governance of urban geographic information, and it encourages research and reflections that seek to rethink what informational rights we have in our hybrid material/digital cities. From distant mainframes to personal computers to handhelds to wearable tech and implanted devices, contemporary technology seems on an unstoppable trajectory to get nearer and nearer to us, our bodies, and the most intimate details of our lives. This conference series has marked every stage of this journey from 1974 until today. Manchester, home of the computer and now European City of Science in 2016, welcomes HCC12 with the aim of scrutinising the journey from impersonal monolithic technology towards the intimate intertwining of devices and the self. What is the impact of this journey and where are we going next? Intimate technologies are now manifest in so many ways in the workplace, domestic environment and through entertainment opportunities.
