USEC'14 Workshop on Usable Security
by Seda Guerses 18 Oct '13

18 Oct '13

apologies for multiple copies of this announcement. s. ================================================== USEC'14 Workshop on Usable Security @ NDSS'14 ================================================== USEC'14 will be held on the 23rd February 2014 co-located with NDSS'14 San Diego, California. Many aspects of information security combine technical and human factors. If a highly secure system is unusable, users will try to circumvent the system or move entirely to less secure but more usable systems. Problems with usability are a major contributor to many high-profile security failures today. However, usable security is not well-aligned with traditional usability for three reasons. First, security is rarely the desired goal of the individual. In fact, security is usually orthogonal and often in opposition to the actual goal. Second, security information is about risk and threats. Such communication is often unwelcome. Increasing unwelcome interaction is not a goal of usable design. Third, since individuals must trust their machines to implement their desired tasks, risk communication itself may undermine the value of the networked interaction. For the individual, discrete technical problems are all understood under the rubric of online security (e.g., privacy from third parties use of personally identifiable information, malware). A broader conception of both security and usability is therefore needed for usable security. http://www.usecap.org/usec14.html ================================================== TOPICS ================================================== The workshop on Usable Security invites submissions on all aspects of human factors and usability in the context of security and privacy. USEC'14 aims to bring together researchers already engaged in this interdisciplinary effort with other computer science researchers in areas such as visualization, artificial intelligence and theoretical computer science as well as researchers from other domains such as economics or psychology. We invite authors to submit original papers describing research or experience in all areas of usable privacy and security. We particularly encourage collaborative research from authors in multiple fields. Topics include, but are not limited to: - Evaluation of usability issues of existing security & privacy models or technology - Design and evaluation of new security & privacy models or technology - Impact of organizational policy or procurement decisions - Lessons learned from designing, deploying, managing or evaluating security & privacy technologies - Foundations of usable security & privacy - Methodology for usable security & privacy research - Ethical, psychological, sociological and economic aspects of security & privacy technologies ------------------------------------ NEW AT USEC'14 ------------------------------------ - Reports of replicating previously published studies and experiments - Reports of failed or negative usable security studies or experiments, with the focus on the lessons learned from such experience. - Reports on deploying usable security & privacy technology in industry It is the aim of USEC to increase the scientific quality of usable security and privacy research. To this end we encourage the use of replication studies to validate research findings. This important and often very insightful branch of research is sorely underrepresented in usable security and privacy research to date. Papers in these categories should be clearly marked as such and will not be judged against regular submissions on novelty. Rather they will be judged based on scientific quality and value to the community. Please contact the chairs in advance of submitting such work. -------------------------------------------- KEYNOTE SPEAKER -------------------------------------------- Serge Egelman, UC Berkeley ==================================== IMPORTANT DATES ==================================== Submission site: https://usec2014.cs.berkeley.edu/ Submissions deadline: 6th of November 2013 Notification: 5th January 2014 Camera ready: 15th January 2014 -------------------------------------------- CHAIRS -------------------------------------------- Matthew Smith (LUH) and David Wagner (UC Berkeley) -------------------------------------------- REPLICATION STUDY CHAIR -------------------------------------------- Marian Harbach (LUH) -------------------------------------------- PROGRAM COMMITTEE -------------------------------------------- Alessandro Acquisti, CMU Heinz College Andrew A. FWD: Call for Contributions: International Internet Preservation Consortium General Assembly conference
by Grotke, Abigail 18 Oct '13

18 Oct '13

Passing along, there may be interest on this list... Each year the International Internet Preservation Consortium holds a day-long public conference in conjunction with their General Assembly. It will be held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, on 19th May 2014. This year's theme is Building Modern Research Corpora: the Evolution of Web Archiving and Analytics. Libraries, archives and other heritage or scientific organizations have been systematically collecting web archives for over 15 years. Early stages of web archiving projects were mainly focused on tackling the challenges of harvesting web content, trying to capture an interlinked set of documents, and to rebuild its different layers through time. Institutions, especially those on a national level, were also defining their legal and institutional mandates. Meanwhile, approaches to web studies developed and influenced researchers' and academics' use of web archives. New requirements have emerged. While the objective of building generic collections remains valid, web archiving institutions and researchers also need to collaborate in order to build specific corpora - from the live web or from web archives. At the same time, "surfing the web the way it was" is no longer the only way of accessing archived web content. Methods developed to analyse large datasets - such as data or link mining - are applicable to web archives. Web archive collections can thus be a component of major humanities and social sciences projects and infrastructures. With relevant protocols and tools for analysis, they will provide invaluable knowledge of modern societies. This conference aims to propose a forum where researchers, librarians, archivists and other digital humanists will exchange ideas, requirements, methods and tools that can be used to collaboratively build and exploit web archive corpora and datasets. Contributions are sought that will present: - models of collaboration between archiving institutions and researchers, - methods and tools to perform data analytics on web archives, - examples of studies performed on web archives, - alternative ways of archiving web content. Attendance will be free but registration is obligatory. Abstracts (no longer than one page) should be sent to Peter Stirling (peter.stirling(a)bnf.fr) by 1st December 2013. Acceptance will be notified on 6th January 2014. Abstracts should be submitted in English but speakers may present in English or French. Simultaneous translation (French/English) will be offered to the audience. Final presentations will be published on the IIPC website, but no proceedings of the conference will be published. Those submitting a presentation proposal who also wish to propose a paper for publication are encouraged to send in parallel their abstract to Alexandria, The Journal of National and International Library and Information Issues, for its special issue on web archiving (abstracts due Friday 13th December 2013; more information on www.manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/journals/alx<http://www.manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/journals/alx> or from the editor, Monica Blake, at info(a)blakeinformation.com) More information is available here: http://netpreserve.org/about-us/news/call-contributions-2014-general-assemb… Please feel free to distribute/forward to others who might be interested. On behalf of the Planning Committee, we are very pleased to call your attention to the third annual International Symposium on Media Innovations, to be held at the University of Oslo, April 24-25, 2014. The Media Innovations Symposium explores how changing technologies, and changing modes of usage and engagement with media bring about innovation and transformation of the media sector. The Symposium invites participation from scholars, editors, producers, and executives across the globe. The Symposium offers a small and thereby very intense conference that examines the state of media innovations from a wide range of industry and academic perspectives. Sponsors include: the Centre for Research on Media Innovations (CeRMI) and the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo. Keynote speakers Thor Gjermund Eriksen, Director General of NRK (the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) Steve Jones, University of Illinois at Chicago Distinguished Professor Provisional keynote title: ³Living the Good Life: IT Innovations and the Quantified Self² Submissions are invited that address the themes listed below. Submissions will be peer-reviewed. Extended abstracts of proposed papers 750 word maximum should be send to <symposium(a)mediainnovations.no>. Deadlines and Dates November 22, 2013: extended abstracts due December 20, 2013: acceptance notices due March 14, 2014: full papers due April 14, 2014: best paper award announced Special issue, Journal of Media Innovations. Submitted papers will be further reviewed for inclusion in a special issue of The Journal of Media Innovations, Vol. 2, No. 1, Fall, 2014. Themes for paper and panel presentations (For the complete call, including accommodation information, please see <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/research/center/media-innovations/events/I SMI14_cfp.html>) Industry emphases We invite both paper and panel proposals designed to encourage practitioner involvement. The following are example themes of interest: Best-case / worst-case examples of innovation: ³Break-through² examples that may serve as models for others? ³Learning from our failures² how not to pursue innovation? Taxing matters: how tax policies foster/hinder media innovations Beta mentality: How are newsrooms dealing with constant change? Additional possible themes, topics: media entrepreneurs and small media firms as innovators innovation in media content (focus on ways of describing and comparing content innovation in entertainment media) innovation in NPD routines and practices in media industries ICTs and innovation in media production tools innovation, accessibility, and customer service Academic Emphasis We invite both paper and panel proposals having to do with any aspect of media innovation, including the following: Normative analyses We no longer have a way of living together of conducting any domain of life without media but we don¹t yet know how to live well with media. (Couldry 2013: 15; emphasis in the original) We invite papers that offer normative analyses of media innovations, e.g.: Do innovative forms of journalism including so-called ³citizen journalism² indeed contribute to greater diversity of viewpoints, tolerance, debate, and healthier democratic processes, and/or to (anti-democratic) fragmentation (as through the ³Daily Me² effect of filtering news content to suit one¹s own tastes and views in the first place), ³herd mentality² and polarization, etc.? Does the speed of innovation and change in the media industry represent any risk to society? Papers can take still broader perspectives e.g., what does it mean to live good lives in a mediated age? but should be firmly connected with concrete and focused examples of media innovation practices and products. Additional themes, topics. Scholars are invited to submit papers that address additional aspects of media innovation for example: mapping innovation in the media industries; media innovation and journalistic practices; innovation in children's media; genre innovation, including new genres and styles in e-books, social media and mobile media; gender and media innovation; innovation vis-à-vis media economics and media and cultural policy; humanistic approaches to innovation in media design; media innovations and political communication; mobile media, apps, and innovation; media innovation and cultural institutions (museums, libraries, etc.); Accommodations: We strongly urge potentially interested participants to explore the resource lists on the conference website <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/research/center/media-innovations/events/a ccommodation.html> of recommended accommodations and book as early as possible. Hi all Does anyone know of an easy way of keeping track of tags over time in Tumblr, Pinterest or Instagram. I'm especially interested in numbers of tags over time and particular spikes in their popularity, and, if possible, how manh unique users are associated with them and other tags often used in conjunction. Also, is there any way you know of of being able to see how often things have been crossposted across different social media platforms (ibc flickr, twitter, facebook etc)? Ruth

As personal information moves onto the Web, old boundaries are removed even as new boundaries (and barriers) emerge. We can access information from anywhere at any time so that traditional boundaries between activities @home, @school and @work are blurred. Even within an area, activities blur as when people check email during a company meeting. Moreover, information about us that was once effectively hidden from the prying eyes of others, either because access was too difficult or because access attempts would reveal the identity of the "snooping" party, is now often easily "Googled" on the Web. On the other hand, new boundaries and barriers are emerging in the form of, for example, application "sandboxes." These "silos" provide a measure of security because information is meant to be accessed only via the owning application. However, this occurs at the cost of fragmenting information, already a serious problem of personal information management (PIM) on the desktop, that becomes much worse as this information moves onto the Web and into a myriad of devices. This talk will provide practical guidelines and considerations for the construction the useful boundaries ("walls") we need for our safety and sanity. Conversely, the talk will consider ways we might traverse (through "road" construction) other boundaries in order to realize a more effective cross-application, cross-device use of our information. About the speaker: Dr. William Jones is a Research Associate Professor in the Information School at the University of Washington where he works on the challenges of "Keeping Found Things Found" (kftf.ischool.washington.edu) He has published in the areas of PIM, HCI, information retrieval and human cognition. He wrote the book "Keeping Found Things Found: The Study and Practice of Personal Information Management" and, more recently, "The Future of Personal Information, Part 1: Our Information, Always & Forever" and "Part 2: Transforming Technologies to Manage Our Information." "Part 3: Building a Better World With Our Information" is scheduled for publication in late spring of 2014. He holds several patents relating to search and PIM from his work as a program manager at Microsoft in Office and then in MSN Search. Dr. Jones received his doctorate from Carnegie-Mellon University for research into human memory

Call for Papers for ICA Preconference on Sharing
by Nicholas John 16 Oct '13

16 Oct '13

Call for Papers ICA Pre-Conference: Sharing Thursday, May 22, 2014 University of Washington, Seattle Sharing is a rich and emotive concept that refers to a range of distinct yet associated practices, all of which are powerfully salient in contemporary society. At the very least, sharing is the constitutive activity of Web 2.0, an alternative mode of production, distribution and consumption, and a type of speech. This pre-conference invites scholars from a range of fields to contribute to the research and theorization of sharing. Thematic background The notion of sharing is widely deployed nowadays, and in a number of different ways. First, sharing is a keyword for the digital age: In Web 2.0 we share statuses, tweets, files, photos, videos, book reviews and more. Second, sharing is the proposed bedrock of alternative forms of production and consumption. Some of these forms are known collectively as the Sharing Economy, an emergent movement that identifies with and rests upon the technologies of social networks; others might fall under headings such as FLOSS, peer production, or the P2P economy. Third, sharing is a category of speech, or a type of communication, that is fundamental to our therapeutic culture, referring mainly—but certainly not only—to the conveyance of intimate information about the self to a significant other. These are just some of the ways in which sharing, in its different senses, is constitutive of important aspects of our social, economic and intimate lives. A feature of sharing that is common to these different practices is that they all touch on the nebulous and porous boundary between the ‘public’ and the ‘private’: for instance, SNS users are criticized for polluting the public sphere, or ‘oversharing’; a popular model in the Sharing Economy involves offering private spaces (spare bedrooms, space in one’s car) for public consumption; and the rise of the therapeutic discourse has entailed increased levels of self-exposure between intimates, friends, and even colleagues. Relatedly, each of the types of sharing draws on a similar pool of values, which includes honesty, openness, trust, and commonality. To the extent that these are desirable values, sharing would thus seem to be integral to any vision of the good life. Indeed, sharing is almost by definition good. But this is precisely the point at which a critique of sharing is required. For instance, we might wish to note that by sharing on social network sites we are contributing to privately-owned (and government-accessed) assemblages of surveillance; we might want to ask in what sense renting out a spare room is sharing it, and we might want to explore the role of venture capital and big business in the Sharing Economy; and we might wonder what structures of power are enacted and reproduced by privileging certain types of culturally-situated speech. More generally, if inclusion in a social framework is predicated on the ability to share, where does this leave people who have nothing? Topics Empirical and theoretical papers are invited on any topic for which sharing is a central concept. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following: ● Sharing online: What is the political economy of online sharing? How does the metaphor of sharing as the constitutive activity of Web 2.0 operate? ● Technologies of sharing: Reports have claimed that online sharing (e.g. of statuses) increases people’s propensity to share stuff offline (e.g. power drills). How is sharing today technologically mediated, encouraged, or forced? And: how do different technologies encourage sharing or punish non-sharing? Skype users, for instance, must share bandwidth to use the service; peer-to-peer file sharers share what they are uploading for as long as they are downloading. ● The word, ‘sharing’: Etymologies; ‘sharing’ in different languages; evolving meanings. And: what is stake by calling a practice one of sharing? What is gained? ● The Sharing Economy: The Sharing Economy and collaborative consumption as a critique of capitalism; the differences between sharing and gifting – for instance, does sharing create the same obligations described by Mauss and Derrida in relation to gifts? ● Sharing as a category of speech: What characterizes it? What rules of reciprocity and mutuality govern it? How do the values of sharing as a category of speech inform sharing in other social fields? ● Sharing and gender: Is sharing gendered? What would it mean to say that it is? ● Sharing, giving, exchanging: conceptual boundaries ● What’s new? Sharing is a practice as old as human society, so what is new about sharing in the 21st century, if anything? ● Sharing as a norm: How is sharing normatively promoted? What are the sanctions for non-sharing in the different spheres of sharing? ● Sharing as a form of subjectivation and desubjectivation ● Sharing between having and being: towards existentialist understandings of sharing ● Sharing and the concept of intimacy ● The anthropological narrative of sharing We are particularly interested in submissions that actively interrogate the concept of sharing. If sharing is an important notion in your research, we therefore invite you to think about the work done by the word in your field and how it might relate to other senses or uses. Submissions Submissions are welcomed from scholars at all stages of their careers, and across multiple disciplines engaged in research that relates to sharing. Submissions should be extended abstracts of around 750 words and be in Word doc/docx or PDF format. Please submit your abstract as an email attachment to sharingpreconference(a)gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2013. Papers will be judged on criteria of relevance and originality of topic, clarity of presentation, as well as proximity to—and contribution to—the preconference theme. Notifications on acceptance will be emailed in mid-January. In an effort to facilitate informed discussion of papers, the organizers hope to have the papers for this pre-conference posted online. For this reason, we will ask for full papers to be submitted no later than April 15, 2014. Venue The sharing pre-conference will be held at the University of Washington. Transportation to the venue from the conference hotel will be provided at the beginning and end of each day's events. The preconference is sponsored by the divisions of Popular Communication and Philosophy, Theory and Critique, as well as by the Department of Communication, University of Washington. It is being organized by Nicholas John (Department of Communication, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) and Wolfgang Sützl (School of Media Arts & Studies, Ohio University). Queries may be directed to n.john(a)huji.ac.il. This call for papers may be downloaded in PDF format here. ____________ Nicholas John Department of Communication, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Tel: +972-54-7906073 @nicholasajohn

Hi everyone, Not to clog up your email, this did raise my eyebrows yesterday. In case you have not seen it, snapchat's pictures usually self destruct in 10 seconds, giving a feeling of privacy, however, it seems the company has been handing over unopened images to the feds.
