CFP: ICA Pre-Conference on “Media and Religion"-Philosophy, Theory and Critique Division
by Heidi Campbell 15 Oct '13

15 Oct '13

Call for papers for Pre-Conference on “Media and Religion”: Betwixt and Between Sponsored by the Philosophy, Theory and Critique Division of theInternational Communication Association To be held 22 May 2014, 9:00 AM - 5 PM in Thomas Hall-Jackson School of International Studies, at the University of Washington “Media and religion” is a phrase used to describe a growing cross-disciplinary field of research. Communication scholars have noted interesting social and cultural implications of the intersection of media and religion on several levels. This includes acknowledging how communication processes within media and religious practice often point to a ritualization of communication, drawing attention to acts of witnessing and confession in media cultures. There is also recognition by scholar that media and religion highlights an important intersection of cultural and social imaginations, where media creates and informs deep feelings of social belonging. Against this background, it is not surprising that the intersection of religion and media is attracting research attention, especially in regards to the mediatization of religion and the proliferation of mediated religion. Given the complexity of the relationship between media and religion, we advocate moving beyond the simple questions of “How is religion represented in the media?” and “How to religions use media to promote their cause?” to consider broader and deeper theoretical investigations of this evolving interplay. We suggest media may evoke and create a sense of wonder, transcendence, and flow, which in many ways approach experiences often assigned to the religious realm. To put it with Victor Turner’s classical essay on liminality: Religious media events, as well as media as a religious event, call into question simplistic social ontologies by being “betwixt and between” purely religious and purely media contexts. This preconference seeks to bring into conversation a variety of approaches common within the study of media, religion and culture, in order to showcase the diverse perspectives scholars of Communication have taken in the study of this interrelationship. The goal of the preconference is to spotlight current scholarly methods within media and religion studies in order to highlight key theoretical concepts and problems – both for those working in the field, and for those who wish to gain first-hand insight into this area of Communication research. Through papers, panel presentations and shared conversation amongst participants this event aims is to draw scholarly attention to the relationship between media, religion and culture in its multiple intersections. The preconference will consist of a morning session featuring two keynote panels of recognized scholars whose work intersects with the field of media and religion. The afternoon will involve two parallel panels of papers selected from abstract submissions, and a closing summary panel. Invited and confirmed speakers/respondents include Menachem Blondheim, Hebrew University; Nick Couldry, Goldsmiths University of London; Stig Hjarvard, University of Copenhagen; Stewart M. Hoover, University of Colorado-Boulder; Knut Lundby, University of Oslo and Paddy Scannell, University of Michigan. Paper proposals are sought for the afternoon sessions on themes related to the study of media and religion. Of special interest are papers which sketch out new cross-disciplinary connections, methods and theoretical approaches to this intersection.Possible themes for paper considered for the pre-conference includes research which reflects on: - Media as a site for religious practice and performanc - The mediatization of religion - Religion and media as cultural technologies - Media communication as a conduit for understanding and peace - Religious media as mediating religion - Media as Ritual Paper submissions are welcome from scholars at all stages of their career working in a variety of discipline that intersect with the study of media, religion and culture. Abstracts of 500 words (maximum) should be submitted along with a brief biographical statement no later than 15 December 2013. Abstract should be submitted to Heidi Campbell at heidic(a)tamu.edu. Submissions will be judged by peer evaluation. Authors will be informed regarding acceptance/rejection for the preconference in mid February 2014. CFP: History of Modernity and Telephony in the non-West
by Vit Sisler 15 Oct '13

15 Oct '13

History of Modernity and Telephony in the non-West Call for Papers CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East Editor-in-Chief: Daniel Martin Varisco Guest Editor: Burçe Çelik Submission deadline: April 30th, 2014 (Full Papers) Aim For the past few decades, history of modernization began to be written by focusing on how technologies as components of modernization processes change the lives of humans, their daily practices and imaginations, and the ways in which they construct and express their identities. Telephony, which functions in both public and private spheres and witnesses social and political changes in private as well as professional relations, is regarded as especially important for historical analysis. Functioning on multiple levels, social history of telephony can unearth the ways in which technologies obtain meanings and values in changing cultural contexts and the dynamics of social, political and cultural transformations. The history of modernization in the non-western societies is often studied by focusing on the projects of the rulers and on the discourses of the ruling parties that aim a social/political change in accordance with a particular Occidentalism – where modernity is imagined with a model of the western modernization processes. Yet, the question of how people of these landscapes contributed to the modernization processes and how they produced their own modern practices in daily organizations, relations and experiences, did not receive enough scholarly attention. This special issue of CyberOrient invites articles that focus on the history of modernity and telephony in the non-west that take the user perspective to the center. Topics could include the daily practices of users with telephone technology, the meaning and values that have been attributed to this technology by users, the role of telephony within the social, cultural and political struggles of users, and the effect of the ownership or non-ownership of telephony in social, cultural and political lives of individuals and collectives. We welcome submissions from across disciplines and methodological approaches that are empirically and critically grounded. About CyberOrient CyberOrient (http://www.cyberorient.net/) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Anthropological Association, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. The aim of the journal is to provide research and theoretical considerations on the representation of Islam and the Middle East, the very areas that used to be styled as an “Orient”, in cyberspace, as well as the impact of the internet and new media in Muslim and Middle Eastern contexts. Submission Articles should be submitted directly to Burçe Çelik (burce.celik(a)bahcesehir.edu.tr) and Vit Sisler (vit.sisler(a)ff.cuni.cz) Articles should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including references), and follow the AAA style in referencing and citations. Upon acceptance, articles will be published online with free access in autumn 2014. call for book chapter
by CS 15 Oct '13

15 Oct '13

Call for Book Chapters: Social media have dramatically popularized practices of evaluation, especially of cultural products and artistic expressions. The practices of “liking” and rating any shared contents such as music to blogs, film, videos, photographs to artwork and performances have been ubiquitous in today’s digital environments. As a result, creative producers are increasingly developing reputations and careers through a complex blend of online social reputation management and distribution platforms, and more longstanding forms of marketing channels and professional evaluation. In this context, Online Evaluation of Creativity and the Arts (under contract with Routledge edited by H. Cecilia Suhr) seeks to examine the newly emerging forms of evaluation, such as contests, competitions, ranking, commenting, liking, and rating, which are taking place in digital environments. In doing so, this book investigates the criteria and assessment practices tied to the evaluation of creativity and artistic works. This book further analyzes what is at stake when digital environments heighten the role of amateur and peer criticism to the level of expert critiques. While exploring potential informal learning opportunities and offering incisive critiques on the emerging norms and standards of evaluation, the essays in this book cover a wide range of artistic and creative practices. If interested in contributing to this book, please contact H. Cecilia Suhr, suhrhc(a)miamioh.edufor initial inquiries on your topic as well as further guidelines. This project will move very quickly. If your abstract is accepted, a full-length chapter will be requested for final consideration. Only those chapters that require minor revision will be selected.

Fwd: [SWS-L:413] Call for panelists - feminist online pedagogy
by Dianna Fielding 14 Oct '13

14 Oct '13

Dear List, Please see below a CFP which may be of interest to some of you. All questions should be directed to Julie Wiest. Thanks, Dianna ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Julie Wiest <jbwiest(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Oct 14, 2013 at 3:10 PM Subject: [SWS-L:413] Call for panelists - feminist online pedagogy To: sws-l <Sws-l(a)listproc.cc.ku.edu> Greetings, SWS members! I am seeking participants for a panel session focused on feminist online pedagogy for the *2014 SWS Winter Meeting*. In their recent article in *Feminist Teacher*, Chick and Hassel (2009) called for increased efforts to bring the feminist classroom online, explaining that "(f)eminist pedagogy produces a classroom environment of mutual respect where both teacher and students take active, responsible, and shared roles in the learning process" (p. 197-198). We know that online education is likely here to stay: About 6.7 million U.S. college students (about 32 percent) are now taking at least one course online, and about 69 percent of institutions of higher education report that online education is critical to their long-term strategy.* For this panel, I am looking for teacher-scholars who have taught online (or who are just interested in online teaching) and can offer ideas, tips, and strategies for incorporating feminist principles and values into the online classroom. Especially welcome are panelists who can discuss these experiences/ideas in relation to gender and/or intersectional inequalities, in keeping with the conference theme. *Please let me know by Oct 25* if you are interested in serving as a panelist or have any questions.
