Blogging AOIR Denver
by Janet Salmons, Ph.D. 14 Oct '13

14 Oct '13

Hello again, wearing a local host committee member hat... We know that AOIR is multi-disciplinary... and we'd like the good work presented, exchanged and considered at the conference to get out into related fields. Do you write, blog or post for other associations or professional groups with common interests? While we expect that many attendees will post on social media on their own, we'd like to find some individuals who have the ability/connections to post more substantive reviews and/or discussion of key ideas. For example, I write for the New Social Media, New Social Science blog http://nsmnss.blogspot.co.uk/ about qual methods and ethics. I am also on the Academy of Management Ethics Education Committee and can post on their blog http://ethicist.aom.org/. I plan to attend relevant sessions then write a piece to post on both of theses sites. It would be ideal if "citizen journalists" could attend at least two sessions within a program area and blog/tweet during or after the conference. Depending on your time and level of enthusiasm, you could interview presenters and/or link to their websites/books. We've identified a few themes to get you thinking, and are of course open to others that interest you: - Conference theme - Internet Life and Death - Research methods - Research ethics - Identity - Politics and Privacy - Games and Play If this sounds interesting, please contact me off list: jesalmons[at] vision2lead.com. Denver and the area: local view
by Janet Salmons, Ph.D. 14 Oct '13

14 Oct '13

Hello from Colorado! I'd like to respond to several posts made by folks planning to visit the area. You may also contact me off-list if you have a question. 1) Shutdown. Can't speak to customs etc. but once you get here you are not likely to be inconvenienced. 2) Museums. There is a cluster of museums fairly close to the main conference hotel: the Denver Art Museum (www.denverartmuseum.org) The Still Museum (https://www.clyffordstillmuseum.org) and the Colorado History Museum (www.historycolorado.org) Museum of Nature and Science is on the other side of town, and will require a bit more navigation www.dmns.org 3) More arts! Those who like performing arts can check out the Denver Center (www.denvercenter.org) or Symphony (www.coloradosymphony.org/) both are an easy walk from the conference hotel. Jazz? Check out Dazzle (www. dazzlejazz.com) and other clubs (tune into my fav radio station, www.kuvo.org for more!). 4) Want to get closer to the mountains? You can get a bus from Market Street Station to Boulder (www.rtd-denver.com/HowToRideBus.shtml) wherere there are many places to walk and hike. See: http://www.bouldercoloradohiking.com/ and http:/<http://www.bouldercoloradohiking.com/> /www.bouldercoloradousa.com . If you have a car, check out Nederland, a funky town, near lots of places to hike (http://nederlandco.org/) and ( http://www.bouldercounty.org/os/parks/pages/caribouranch.aspx) for starters. PLEASE keep in mind we've just had devastating floods. So while yes, they are opening Rocky Mountain National Park, it is NOT 1 1/2 hours because there are many road closures that will not be fixed in two weeks. (See http://www.coloradodot.info/travel ) At this point I would not recommend it. Keep in mind that in the high country the weather will be changing as well-- which may mean other road closures. If you are longing for a "Rocky Mountain high" write to me and I can give you some other suggestions. Its been noted elsewhere but worth repeating, you are coming to the Mile High City: the extreme dryness and altitude can get to you! The main ways to avoid altitude sickness are: 1) drink water pretty much non-stop, especially the first day. You need a full water bottle with you. 2) Drink alcohol with care, especially while acclimating. It will have a different impact than it does at sea level! (See: http://www.denver.org/metro/high-altitude-tips) * * It is a great place to visit, I am sure you will enjoy it! Anything else? IR14 and the political situation
by Stine Gotved 13 Oct '13

13 Oct '13

Hello fellow aoir-heads - especially you located in the US. In 10 days, we'll meet up in Denver, and I really look forward to IR14. However, could you please tell if there is anything in the present political situation that I as a foreigner ought to prepare for? Do I for example need to bring loads of cash or do I run the "risk" of being stuck? (I actually like that prospect better than most!) I'm not really alarmed - on the other hand, it's very hard to follow (not to say understand) the details in the administrative shut down. Please share your thoughts on the subject, in regard to the upcoming conference. Thanks, Stine Associalte Professor The IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark

IR14 extra sightseeing
by Peter Timusk 13 Oct '13

13 Oct '13

Does anyone have plans they want to share about extra sightseeing in Denver, so may be we could go as a group(s)? I know there are some game researchers planning some gaming clubs visits or I hear about that on Twitter. I am getting around on the public transit and spent an hour online last night on the RTD web site and Google Earth planning the buses to all the scheduled events from my hotel etc.. I would love to get out to something like Red Rocks park and also check out museums and the parks in the city. The science and tech museum is in one large park. I did not though book any extra days (Tuesday-Sunday) perhaps I can do one museum the night of arrival Tuesday. The planned events sound good so I am not sure I would want to miss those.

CFP: Navigating a Networked Death (ICA panel)
by Tamara Kneese 13 Oct '13

13 Oct '13

International Communication Association (ICA) Conference 2014 Seattle, Washington 22-26 May 2014 *CFP: Navigating a Networked Death panel * >From online memorials to crowdfunding funeral costs, the particular sociocultural and technological protocols of social network sites (SNS) undeniably impact experiences of death and mourning. SNS have become major loci for coping with loss and memorializing loved ones. People can simultaneously augment existing funerary practices and create new practices that take advantage of the unique affordances of SNS. As networked and collaborative forms of mourning extend into our online experiences, SNS may become a way of intensifying existing social networks, fomenting new bonds, even while collaborating on, contesting, or negotiating the memory of the deceased. While recent works have analyzed the specific modes of interaction on Facebook walls or MySpace memorials, we seek to better understand the relationships between these online interactions and on-the-ground relationships either affected or created by these exchanges. As the novelty of SNS responses to death fades, we must take a closer look at how these post-mortem social networking practices have become incorporated into everyday life. We are most interested in the relationship between the network of grievers and an individual who has died, and how the deceased becomes a particularly dense node in a constellation of relationships. In this panel, we seek to bring together diverse perspectives on a topic that will affect everyone. As a universal aspect of life, death provides a lens through which to examine networked social bonds. The presentations in this panel will discuss the ways in which we might conceptualize links between online mourning practices and the embodied relationships they reflect, influence, and produce. Potential papers may explore the use of social media to plan memorial services, to collectively cope with loss, or the interactions between different members of an individual’s social circle on SNS and in face-to-face meetings. Especially pertinent are themes related to mourning, grief, memorialization, subjectivity, privacy, authority, collaboration, and affect. Panel co-chairs: Jed Brubaker, PhD candidate in Informatics at UC Irvine and Tamara Kneese, PhD candidate in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University. Please send 150-word abstracts no later than OCTOBER 31, 2013 to tek234(a)nyu.edu and jed.brubaker(a)uci.edu

PRism Special Issue CFP: 'Fandom, Brands and Public Relations'
by Amber Hutchins 13 Oct '13

13 Oct '13

PRism Special Issue CFP: 'Fandom, Brands and Public Relations', Amber Hutchins and Natalie Tindall, prfandom(a)gmail.com Traditional public relations methods of communicating with target publics have changed. The idea of engaged publics or audiences has arisen in multiple fields, including audience studies, media studies, sport culture, participatory culture, marketing, cultural studies, and public relations. The conceptions of the public in previous models are no longer valid across all campaigns. With the advent of social media, content producers and audiences can be one and the same. Fans have more ownership on a global scale, without the limitations of physical proximity, yet our current conceptions of public do not delineate between active and super-active publics, let alone discuss engagement with information beyond processing and seeking it or dealing with publics virtually who are highly motivated to communicate with organizations and brands. Also, in public relations, there is a huge shift to community managers. Yet, there is not a lot of knowledge about the publics who are interacting within the community; this is a place where this special issue can provide significant insight. Fandom and participatory culture have been identified, discussed, and lamented over in these areas and in various global contexts, and these conversations are synonymous and parallel with the ideas outlined in the segmentation strategies and the robust research on the situational theory of publics. However, little conversation between those areas has occurred. For example, online community management of fans and critics is a relatively new method practitioners use to engage stakeholders and public. Although there has been some work on offline community management (or brand communities), primarily in fields outside of public relations, there is not much available for online communities. The work that has been done has been focused on marketing or cultural studies. If you look at our leading public relations and strategic communication journals, research on fans is rare, and the attempt to connect fandom research to segmentation and other public relations theory is nonexistent. The goal of this project is to bring scholarly attention to the disciplines' interaction, engagement, and interaction with fans who are publics. The purpose of this special issue is to integrate stakeholder and publics theories with those of participatory cultures and media studies/fan perspectives; to add new, fresh insight into the public relations discipline's concepts of publics and segmentation; and to apply new research and understandings of publics. * Submission deadline: 1st February 2014 * Anticipated publication date: During the 2014 calendar year Submissions for review should be sent to Amber Hutchins and Natalie T.J. Screening Scholarship Media Festival - Submissions Open Until 10/15
by Veena Vasudevan 13 Oct '13

13 Oct '13

*camra*, a media pedagogy lab, at UPenn's Graduate School of Education & Annenberg School of Communication is holding it's 2nd Annual Screening Scholarship Media Festival (#SSMF2014) and are still accepting submissions. *camra* seeks to push the boundaries of research and media, developing new ways of knowing through audiovisual forms of expression and create an aesthetic sensibility that destabilizes previously held notions of what differentiates art from scholarship. Thus, the festival asks participants to consider the following questions: - *What are the possibilities that advances in media offer for knowledge production? * - *What are the methods and strategies that media makers and academics share in their work?* - * What are the ways in which academics can and should integrate rigorous media production in their research?* Last year we had a range of submissions from artists, filmmakers, scholars, educators, designers and more. They shared films, e-books, online multimodal publications, animations and other amazing media work. SUBMISSIONS DUE ON 10/15/13. For more information and access to online submissions system: http://www.camrapenn.org/screening-scholarship-media-festival/ twitter: @camrapenn facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CamraPenn

The Institute of Network Cultures presents: MoneyLab--Coining Alternatives
by Geert Lovink 13 Oct '13

13 Oct '13

The Institute of Network Cultures presents: MoneyLab--Coining Alternatives Over the past few years, while the economic downturn endures and budget cuts prevail, we have witnessed the emergence and rise of alternative payment systems and revenue models in digital media. Online bartering sites, a plethora of crowdfunding platforms, new forms of valuation, e-wallets and crypto-currencies like Bitcoin, are but a few examples. These coincide with the huge growth of mobile money transfer services across Asia and Africa and the general convergence of digital and financial industries. Is this where a healthy economic future lies? Do these economic ventures testify to a paradigm shift from a market-based economy towards a network economy? What are the possibilities, pitfalls and issues at hand? Will these experiments gain wider ‘over the counter’ usage, effectively becoming mainstream? Beyond Hayekian notions of ‘currency competition’, what theories and concepts can help us engage with these developments? MoneyLab: Coining Alternatives aims to critically explore, map and probe the politics, inner-workings and governance of these alternative digital economic forms. It is not enough to merely promote and further develop (technical) alternatives, we also need time to ask ourselves critical questions and re-examine the very underpinnings of our endeavors. What’s Cooking? MoneyLab: Discussion List You can join our project by subscribing to the MoneyLab: Coining Alternatives Mailinglist. We are always looking for radical submissions that closely reflect the stated aim of the MoneyLab: Coining Alternatives project. Subscribe here:http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/moneylab_listcultures.org. MoneyLab: Blog Over the next few weeks we will launch the MoneyLab: Coining Alternatives Blog where you can find our position paper, interesting background articles, blog posts, and info on our upcoming events. We will send out a notice to our listservice members as soon as the Blog is live. MoneyLab: Conference We will be hosting a two-day conference event in Amsterdam, on March 21-22, 2014. The purpose of this conference is to launch the network by gathering artists, designers, programmers, activists and researchers. The aim will be to map the field, reflect upon theories and experiences and clarify the key constituents, discourses and architectures at work in the different kinds of network economies. MoneyLab: INC Reader One of the outcomes of the conference will be to publish the discussions and debates as an INC reader, which will serve as a resource on alternatives in networked economies. These will not be proceeding and everyone interested can send in an abstract. The publication is due to come late 2014 and will be published both in a paper version in a variety of electronic versions (pdf, e-pub etc.). MoneyLab: Toolkit In addition, we will develop a toolkit built on the results of our research project that maps the field of alternative revenue models and payments systems geared to freelancers and organizations in the creative industries. >> Join Us!<< Of central importance to this project is the formation of a collaborative network of researchers, artists, developers, engineers, and others interested in sharing, coining, critiquing, and ushering in alternative network economies. Did you read or write an interesting article on this matter, or maybe you also want to host a similar conference, hackathon or other types of conspiratorial gatherings? – let us know!
