by David Crowley 08 Oct '13

Hi All, I am involved in teaching a course on Emerging Technology in New Media (a fairly broad topic) and I thought I'd reach out to the list and see does anyone have any interesting (up-to-date-ish) readings/books/ideas for lecture topics for a course like this? It is a final year undergrad module so can be reasonably advanced, Regards, David

CFP AAG 2014: Alternative Computation and Unconventional Spaces
by Joe Eckert 08 Oct '13

08 Oct '13

Alternative Computation and Unconventional Spaces Monica Stephens, Humboldt State University Josef Eckert, University of Washington Newly emergent features of the computational turn (e.g., Berry 2011) posit new challenges for geographers practicing computer-mediated research. While geographers maintain a strong relationship with geographic information systems, new technologies, hardware, and practices suggest exciting new avenues for computational research. Geographic “big data” demand new, computationally intensive approaches to geospatial analysis. Textual artifacts from social media sources augment traditional geospatial inquiry, but also serve as data for non-GIS computational work such as natural language processing, topic modeling, or social media analysis. These provocative treatments suggest ways in which information can be geographic, yet not necessarily require explicit Cartesian expression. Results of such analyses have determined uneven distributions of data, and limits to the representational abilities of GIS. We’re excited to push beyond traditional GIS techniques to explore other ways in which our digital beings are expressed through space and place. This session welcomes both empirical and theoretical work that advances computer-mediated research in novel ways. We welcome papers on the following topics (or any closely related): 1) Digital humanities-inspired inquiry for Geography 2) Alternative methodologies for the digitally underrepresented 3) Novel geospatial and other computer-mediated approaches to “big data” analyses 4) Non-Cartesian geographic information and its analyses 5) Computer-mediated research located in underrepresented spaces (rural areas, impoverished places, etc.) 6) Geographic natural language processing, topic modeling, or other textual analysis 7) Relational spaces of Social Network Analysis Please send related abstracts to Joe Eckert (jeckert1(a)uw.edu) and Monica Stephens (monica.stephens(a)humboldt.edu) no later than October 31, 2013. Best, Monica Stephens & Joe Eckert

A Global Research Agenda for Children’s Rights in the Digital Age
by S.Livingstone＠lse.ac.uk 07 Oct '13

07 Oct '13

New Report from UNICEF: A Global Research Agenda for Children’s Rights in the Digital Age The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other children’s charities need to rethink how digital technology and communications are affecting the rights of children around the world, according to a new report from LSE. The report, A Global Agenda for Children’s Rights in the Digital Age: Recommendations for Developing UNICEF’s Research Strategy<http://www.unicef-irc.org/publications/702> by Professor Sonia Livingstone and Dr Monica Bulger of LSE argues that the UN children’s charity should adopt new research methods in order to get robust evidence on how children are using information and communication technology (ICT), and how this may affect their rights and wellbeing. Even though children’s digital activities are growing quickly, many of the creative and interactive features of the internet remain substantially underused, especially in lower-income countries and among marginalised children. The growth in ICT around the world is also increasing ‘offline risks’ such as bullying, exposure to pornography and unwanted sexual solicitation. The number of households with internet access in developing countries has nearly doubled in the past five years, and looks set for significant further growth. Having conducted interviews with internet and child welfare experts around the world, the report authors conclude that there is a pressing need for research insights generated in the wealthier global North to be extended or complemented by research in the global South. With better evidence about children’s internet use, UNICEF and other children’s charities would be able to campaign for more effective policies. This would give more children, from all over the world, greater opportunities to benefit from the internet while being protected from the associated dangers. Commenting on the report, Professor Livingstone said, “Drawing the line between offline and online is becoming increasingly impossible. We should anticipate that almost any experience will now have an online dimension. Treating the internet as marginal to children’s rights is becoming ever more short-sighted or even misguided as a strategy.” “Although many valuable initiatives to promote children’s rights to online protection and participation are underway worldwide, the lack of a sound evidence base makes it hard to set policy priorities, monitor progress, and design effective interventions.” The full report is available to download here: A Global Agenda for Children’s Rights in the Digital Age: Recommendations for Developing UNICEF’s Research Strategy<http://www.unicef-irc.org/publications/702> Sonia Livingstone be launching this report at a forum organised by the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University on Monday 7th October 6pm ET. http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/2013/10/global_research_agenda Please access the attached hyperlink for an important electronic communications disclaimer: http://lse.ac.uk/emailDisclaimer

Assoc. of Amer. Geographers CFP: Digital Geographies, Geographies of Digitalia
by Jen Jack Gieseking 06 Oct '13

06 Oct '13

Hi all, Please feel free to forward or repost widely. Thanks! Jack -- Jen Jack Gieseking, Ph.D. New Media and Data Visualization Specialist, Postdoctoral Fellow Digital and Computational Studies Initiative, Bowdoin College jgieseking(a)gmail.com www.jgieseking.org www.spatiallyinclined.org @jgieseking <https://twitter.com/jgieseking> ---------- * Association of American Geographers (AAG) CFP Digital Geographies, Geographies** of Digitalia* Jen Jack Gieseking (Bowdoin College) and Luke Bergmann (University of Washington) With expanding interest in and work on the ways technology and our everyday lives interrelate, increasing recognition of implications of digital methods and theoretical dispositions in geography is also growing. Much of this attention has been devoted to important and exciting explorations using geoweb or Geospatial Web frameworks, often prioritizing the work of GIS, big data, and/or, reflexively, science and technology studies (STS). While the digital humanities are exploding onto the academic scene--not only foregrounding a disposition toward a creative criticism that is generative, but also simultaneously posing questions of interest to literary and social theory--"digital geographies" are beginning to emerge. What can geography bring to the table? How might we embrace not only digital geographies that explore the digital, the computational, or the algorithmic, but also embrace geographies of digitalia, i.e. the social construction of our everyday lives and space through the imbrication of the digital and the material? In this session, we are interested in fostering a broader diversity of digital scholarship, qualitative and quantitative, that consciously engages digitally, yet may or may not take 'the digital' as its object of study. We are particularly interested in papers that provide theoretical, methodological, and/or analytical insights into digital approaches to geography. We welcome papers inspired by, but not limited to, the following topics: - feminist, queer, critical race, and disability studies approaches for challenging inequality and injustice through digital means and/or in digital spaces and places - constructions in the digital differences of place, such as urban vs. rural, comparative urbanisms, across scales - critical uses of Open Access, Open Source, Free and Open Source, and/or Open Data platforms, software, or initiatives - computational methods and analytics in geographic projects - analyses of civil movements’ use of technology, such as Tahir Square, Occupy, etc. - implementations of social media in geographic study and pedagogy - theoretical and applied insights into spatio-temporalities of digital space and place - data visualizations of space and time for diverse publics - digital methods and tools to support geographic participatory action research - policy implications for shifting ethics and possibilites as inspired by online spaces Please send a title and abstract of no more than 250 words to Jen Jack Gieseking (jgieseki(a)bowdoin.edu) and Luke Bergmann (lrb9(a)uw.edu) by October 20th, 2013 in order to submit your work to this Association of American Geographers (AAG) conference session. This year's AAG will take place from April 8th-12th in Tampa, FL, USA. Feel free to contact us with any questions about the session. We look forward to a lively and engaging conversation!
