Two announcements from ICA Game Studies Interest Group: Call for papers + reviewers + preconference proposals
by Nicholas Bowman 05 Oct '13

05 Oct '13

Colleagues, As a representative of ICA's Game Studies Interest Group, I wanted to let you know about a few upcoming opportunities for game studies scholarship. If you have any questions, please contact me directly at Nicholas.Bowman(a)mail.wvu.edu and I'll be eager to help you find some answers. All of these announcements are regarding our 2014 Seattle conference (May 22 to 26, 2014) so I hope you might be able to make it? Regardless, there are plenty of ways in which you can help us as we work towards a common goal of games research. =) It's a longer note, but please don't tl;dr us? Apologies in advance for any cross-postings if you're a member of other groups. CALL FOR PAPER SUBMISSIONS AND REVIEWERS As the vice chair and paper review competition coordinator for the International Communication Association's Game Studies interest group, I want to remind all of you that you are invited to submit papers to the Game Studies paper competition for the upcoming ICA 2014 annual conference to be held 22 to 26 May, 2014 in Seattle. Papers must be submitted online using the ICA online submission system (http://www.icahdq.org/cfp) by 11 p.m. Eastern U.S. time on 4 November 2013. We welcome papers from a variety of disciplinary approaches on a broad range of topics dealing with the study of games and the game experience. More details about our paper competition and the general ICA call for papers guidelines can be found at the group's web site, http://icagames.org. Whether you are submitting a paper or not, we are also seeking reviewers to help us with this year's paper competition and we hope that you’ll consider volunteering. We recognize that your time is valuable and as a result, we work to limit the number of papers assigned to any given reviewer. To volunteer to review: 1) go to the ICA paper submission site at http://www.icahdq.org/cfp/index.asp 2) log in and choose the "Continue to Paper Management" link 3) choose "Volunteer to be a Reviewer" and include Game Studies in your selected groups. Our reviewers are what make our paper competition possible, and I am very proud of the generous service that great scholars from all over the world has provided to make our paper competition a good one. I hope you will help us succeed again this year. While you are working on those papers and signing up to review, you can review our paper call and other information at http://icagames.org and get the conversation started early with our Facebook community at https://www.facebook.com/icagames. CALL FOR PRE-CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS Beyond the Pixels: A Look at Digital Games Pre-Conference to the 64th International Communication Association (ICA) Annual Conference Seattle, WA, USA Wednesday 22 May, 2014 Digital games are an integral aspect of many lives – they’re in social networks, they’re on mobile phones, and they are, as ever, on television and computer screens. Their influence is not limited to the screens or the devices in which they exist, but can be experienced well beyond their original digital footprint. The goal of the 2014 pre-conference, “Beyond the Pixels,” is to take it one step further and encourage scholars to think outside the box. This pre-conference will be a space to think about the marks that digital games are making on our world. Submissions should look within the game, outside the game, and around the game for their inspiration. Careful consideration of the influence of specific elements of the game design itself, such as avatars, sound, user interfaces, types of game play, are welcome. We encourage innovative challenges to the notion of digital games as having a singular influence on the user, and the implications for that influence as it relates to broader society. Considerations for the infrastructures that have developed around games and continue to influence games, as well as explorations of the communities that develop around, within, and beyond games, are also encouraged. Potential pre-conference topics include but are not restricted to: · Game content · Game design choices and their implications · Game elements such as avatar, sound, and user interface · Solo vs. social game play experience · Cross modal games · Game analysis from critical to analytics · Innovative methods for studying uses and applications of games · Impact of designing games for educational, health, moral, or commercial gain · Academic vs. industry game research · Game research methods Push the boundaries. Go beyond the pixels. Further information on the pre-conference can be found at: http://icagames.org ( http://game.icahdq.org/ohana/website/?p=56927916 ), and on the ICA main conference at www.icahdq.org. Extended Abstracts Anyone interested in presenting at the pre-conference is invited to submit an extended abstract between 1000-1500 words in APA 6th style to the pre-conference organization committee before 23:59 EST, December 1, 2013. The abstracts will be subject to a double blind peer review process; therefore all identifying author information should be removed from the abstract. Notification of acceptance will be sent by February 1, 2014. To submit, please e-mail a PDF version of your extended abstract with title as an attachment to preconference(a)icagames.org. When submitting the abstract, please also include a separate cover page including the title of your extended abstract, along with your name, title, department/organization, address and e-mail information. Submission of work in progress is also welcome as long as the work can be completed by the month of the pre-conference. The extended abstracts submitted for the pre-conference should not have been submitted to any other competitions in the ICA's main conference or any other venue. The pre-conference submissions will be refereed and programmed separately from ICA’s main conference. All those who are accepted to present their extended abstract should register for the ICA pre-conference by April 3, 2014. Please note that accepted extended abstracts may be published in the on-line pre-conference proceedings. Those who wish to be considered for publication should let the pre-conference organization committee know in their e-mail submission whether or not they want to be included in the proceedings. Thanks in advance, and I look forward to seeing you in Seattle. =) ~nick Nicholas David Bowman, Ph.D. Vice Chair, ICA Game Studies West Virginia University Nicholas.Bowman(a)mai.wvu.edu

Call for papers: Digital Humanities: Now and beyond
by Ditte Laursen 05 Oct '13

Call for papers: Digital Humanities: Now and beyond Submission deadline: February 1, 2014 Publication deadline: Fall 2014 Editors: Mia Rendix (Aalborg University, Denmark), Ditte Laursen (State Media Archive, Denmark) When the American scholars Jeffrey Schnapp and Todd Presner launched their influential and controversial ‘Digital Humanities Manifesto’ in 2009, it heralded a new age in the humanities. In 2011, Europe published a ‘Manifest for the Digital Humanities’, which was developed during the ThatCamp conference in France. Despite their rhetorical, instrumental, and transatlantic differences, it was clear that digitization had entered the realm of the humanities for good. Due to the technological improvements and far-reaching possibilities presented by the internet, digitization fundamentally challenged and altered the ways in which we organize our universities, create new institutional models, and ultimately how we think about and perform basic humanities research. >From its inception, however, the term ‘digital humanities’ has been a hypernym covering several factions and methodological and theoretical approaches. It thus remains widely debated and constantly negotiated. In addition, discussion as to whether digital humanities is or should be regarded as autonomous or whether it should interact or interrelate with the traditional humanities has been a constant source of conflict between different – and often ideological – discourses. MedieKultur welcomes both theoretical and empirical articles on the current and future versions, perspectives, and/or problems of digital humanities. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: – What have we learned from the digital humanities so far? – What is the future of the digital humanities? – How does the digital influence research practice in the humanities— as source, as method, as tool, and as means of enforced communication? – What new questions and approaches does the digital enable within the humanities? – How do archival means of collecting and making available digital data affect the scholarly use of this data within the humanities? – How do the digital and the non-digital differ, and how can new constellations of the digital and the non-digital within the humanities be conceptualized? – In what way does the digital humanities represent a national-regional or universal vision? – How can new digital infrastructures be incorporated into and implemented on the institutional level? Jerry! Very glad you reached out the listserv, as your dissertation topic is very much in line with my own dissertation work on the intersection of hacking, disability, and youth. I've got lots of resources that I'm happy to share with you. First off, I gave a talk at this year's Digital Media & Learning conference on "mixed-ability maker culture" that you might find helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzyYqLNoLy0&feature=youtu.be In terms of accessible makerspaces, see DIY Ability and the Adaptive Design Association in NYC (http://diyability.org/) and also the Assistive Device Center at the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston ( http://www.perkins.org/inside-perkins/assistive-device-center/) There's a growing community of scholars interested in critical disability studies and technology too within the Society for Disability Studies , including Mara Mills (NYU) and Aimi Hamarie (Vanderbilt). In regards to literature on this topic, I've got a couple of good places to start: - Sara Hendren, Harvard/RISD (ablersite.org) - Graham Pullin's book "Design Meets Disability" - These articles: Hurst, A., & Kane, S. (2013). Making “making” accessible. In Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Interaction Design and Children (pp. 635-638), June 24-27, 2013, New York, NY, USA. New York: ACM. Hurst, A., & Tobias, J. (2011). Empowering individuals with do-it-yourself assistive technology. In Proceedings of 13th International SIGACCESS Conference on Computers and Accessibility (pp. 11-18). New York: ACM. Leduc-Mills, B., Dec, J., & Schimmel, J. (2013). Evaluating accessibility in fabrication tools for children. In Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Interaction Design and Children (pp. 617-620), June 24-27, 2013, New York, NY, USA. Would love to hear more about your work! Cheers, Meryl Alper Ph.D. Candidate in Communication Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism University of Southern California On Fri, Oct 4, 2013 at 3:00 PM, <air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org> wrote: > Send Air-L mailing list submissions to > air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > air-l-owner(a)listserv.aoir.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Air-L digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. D.I.Y. Accessibility Communities
by Jerry Lamont Robinson 04 Oct '13

04 Oct '13

Hello, I am a PhD student at Syracuse University and I have been a lurker on this listserv for a while. I am in the beginning stages of writing my dissertation proposal and I need to determine the feasibility of my research in terms of recruitment. I am interested in the do-it-yourself (DIY) practices of persons with disabilities. More specifically, I am interested in exploring the ways in which persons with disabilities address technological, environmental, social, economic, or various other forms of inaccessibility and challenges resulting from functional impairment via their own unique practices, adaptations, modifications, and innovations. I would like to know if there are any makerspaces, hacker communities, or conferences where persons with disabilities come together to engage in and/or discuss accessibility hacking, making, or DIY activities? Does anyone know if these communities or venues exist? I am familiar with several online communities where people share and discuss their own DIY efforts but I want to know if similar communities exist offline. Thanks! DC area event for people involved in online research
by Casey Tesfaye 03 Oct '13

03 Oct '13

Hi there, We're planning another lunch in October: Details: In August we hosted the first Online Research, Offline Lunch for researchers involved in online research in any field, discipline or sector in the DC area. Although Washington DC is a great meeting place for specific areas of online research, there are few opportunities for interdisciplinary gatherings of professionals and academics. These lunches provide an informal opportunity for a diverse set of online researchers to listen and talk respectfully about our interests and our work and to see our endeavors from new, valuable perspectives. We kept the first gathering small. But the enthusiasm for this small event was quite large, and it was a great success! We had interesting conversations, learned a lot, made some valuable connections, and promised to meet again. If you're interested, you can sign up here: http://freerangeresearch.com/2013/10/03/planning-a-second-online-research-o… Cheers, Casey Tesfaye @FreeRangeRsrch
