The conference explores academically the emerging and frontier-breaking applications of new media in everyday contexts of leisure, business and organizational life. October 3rd is the main Academic MindTrek day. Due increasing popularity of the conference, we are extending the scope of Academic MindTrek 2012! The academic conference features six major themes: * Social Media * Ambient & Ubiquitous Media * Business & Media * Human-Computer Interaction (new track!) * Open Source * Digital Games SOCIAL MEDIA “Get social!” Social media and Web 2.0 technologies are applied in ever diverse practices both in private and public communities. Totally new business models are emerging, traditional communication and expression modalities are challenged, and new practices are constructed in the collaborative, interactive media space. AMBIENT AND UBIQUITOUS MEDIA “The medium is the message!” – This conference track focuses on the definition of ambient and ubiquitous media with a cross-disciplinary viewpoint: ambient media between technology, art, and content. The focus of this track is on applications, location based services, ubiquitous computation, augmented reality, theory, art-works, mixed reality concepts, the Web 3.0, and user experiences that make ubiquitous and ambient media tick. MEDIA BUSINESS, MEDIA PRODUCTION AND MEDIA MANAGEMENT Media business and media management face the challenges of the emergence of new forms of digital media. This theme focuses on business studies, policies, practices, and organizational structure of media firms. It discusses competition, patterns of media usage, advertising models, and how traditional media can cope with the challenges coming from digital media focusing on media business and media management issues. HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION (HCI) The wide field of HCI is to discuss issues around human computer interaction modalities, consumer experience, design of computer systems, human aspects, universal media access, ergonomics, communication, novel interaction modalities, privacy, trusted systems, interaction theories, and sociological and psychological factors. This theme of devotes to several of these aspects, and is targeted to the scientific community dealing with several applied and theoretical aspects of HCI and user experience. OPEN SOURCE The last decade has seen a significant increase in open source initiatives such as open source software, open standards, open content, open media, or even open source hardware. On the one hand, the open movement has created new kinds of opportunities such as new business models and development approaches. On the other hand, it has introduced new kinds of technical and non-technical challenges. DIGITAL GAMES The culture and business of digital games is becoming increasingly varied. The current trends range from novel interface innovations and digital distribution channels to social game dynamics and player-generated content. The games track is open for theoretical works, empirical case studies and constructive projects. DEMONSTRATIONS The aim is to gather demonstrations from researchers and professionals from the communities related to the topics of MindTrek. The objective for the demonstrations is to provide a forum for exchanging experiences, practical projects, or media demonstrators. The target audience includes members of the academic community, industry, or laboratories who can demonstrate the results of their research projects with a practical implementation. ACADEMIC MINDTREK AS A CONFERENCE In addition, special academic sessions (e.g. tutorials, demonstrations, workshops, and multidisciplinary sessions) will be held parallel to the MindTrek business conference. Academic speakers and authors are warmly welcome to register for the business conference tracks as part of the academic conference with our special registration rate. The Academic MindTrek registration includes full service such as coffees, lunches, and social gatherings. The MindTrek Association hosts MindTrek as a yearly conference, where the Academic MindTrek conference has been a part of this unique set of events comprising competitions, world famous keynote speakers, plenary sessions, media festivals, and workshops since 1997. It is a meeting place where experts and thinkers present results from their latest work regarding the development of Internet, interactive media, and the information society. MindTrek brings together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines that are involved in the development of media in various fields, ranging from sociology and the economy, to technology. Smartphone interface such as IOS and android through iPhone and various other brands brings new perspective on human computer interactions. Users have been through completely new experience with computer interface and information systems in mobile and social networking applications. However, most enterprise systems such as ERP systems are still using the legacy user interface which is complex to learn and hard to navigate. With the fact that next generation growing up with the social media interface, their views and attitudes on user interfaces of ERP systems will be different from the current generation. Their interactions with the enterprise systems with legacy interface will be challenging. Big ERP provider such as SAP has already started their strategic plan to shift toward this direction. SAP is implementing a social media strategy to shift the perception of their ERP software from the company level to the individual level. Their recent plan to acquire Syclo, a leading provider of enterprise mobile applications and technologies, indicates their strategic move the enterprise software to the social level. Should the enterprise systems be changed to meet the emergent needs of next generation? What's the relationship between the enterprise systems and user experience? Many interesting issues should centre around interactions of this new user experience based on social media software between the experiences of enterprise systems with legacy interface. This track aims at discussing various issues between user experiences and enterprise systems. Possibly of interest: A paper on validity issues in the use of social network analysis with digital trace data
by Kevin G Crowston 27 Apr '12

27 Apr '12

I'd like to call your attention to a paper that I hope may be of interest and use to members of this research community, entitled "Validity issues in the use of social network analysis with digital trace data", by two of my students, James Howison and Andrea Wiggins, and me. The paper appeared in the Journal of the Association for Information Systems, a journal that I expect few of you regularly follow, so I thought an email might help bridge the gap. In the paper we argue that data obtained from online systems, e.g., mailing lists, wiki and the like, are different in important ways from the typical data of SNA, but that the implications of these differences for the validity of research are not always fully appreciated. For example, in contrast to a cross-sectional survey, data from systems often record events that happened over time that have to be collapsed to create a network. However, doing so may create apparent connections in the network that don't occur in the data. We provide a set of suggestions for using such data in SNA studies (and for reviewing papers that use such data). The abstract is included below. The official URL for the paper is http://aisel.aisnet.org/jais/vol12/iss12/2/. If you're not a subscriber, I'd be happy to mail you a copy or you can find a preprint at http://crowston.syr.edu/content/validity-issues-use-social-network-analysis…. Comments on the paper are always welcomed. Validity issues in the use of social network analysis with digital trace data. JAIS 12(12) paper 2. There is an exciting natural match between social network analysis methods and the growth of data sources produced by social interactions via information technologies, from online communities to corporate information systems. Information Systems researchers have not been slow to embrace this combination of method and data. Such systems increasingly provide "digital trace data" that provide new research opportunities. Yet digital trace data are substantively different from the survey and interview data for which network analysis measures and interpretations were originally developed. This paper examines ten validity issues associated with the combination of data digital trace data and social network analysis methods, with examples from the IS literature, to provide recommendations for improving the validity of research using this combination. The effectiveness of online reactions to online bullying behavior?
by Van Cleemput Katrien 27 Apr '12

27 Apr '12

Dear all, I am currently involved in a multi-disciplinary project that aims to develop an evidence-based online game to combat cyberbullying (more information www.friendlyattac.be<http://www.friendlyattac.be>). Currently, we are looking for more information on the effectiveness of online reactions against cyberbullying. Often victims and bystanders are advised to act in certain ways to the bullying: block the bully, stand up for yourself (and react). We are not sure to what extent these tips are useful, especially in a SNS context (e.g. is it a good advice to tell victims to react to the bullying online as these online ‘discussions’ often tend to escalate?, or to what extent is blocking the bully a good solution for the victim?). Does anyone know of researchers that have focused on the effectiveness of this type of provided advice? Or does anyone have suggestions with regard to theory or research in related area’s (I think for instance about flaming on BB) that could help us with these questions? Thank you Katrien Van Cleemput University of Antwerp Department of Communication Studies Sint-Jacobstraat 2, M.171 2000 Antwerpen Tel: +32 (0)3 265 52 57
