CFP: Social lives of and on computers, technology and the internet
by Jonathan Marshall 27 Apr '12

27 Apr '12

People from Australia or people who are visiting Australia in September, please consider submitting a paper for the following panel at ‘Culture and Contest in a Material World’, the Australian Anthropological Society Conference 2012, 26th to 28th September 2012, University of Queensland, St. Lucia (Brisbane) Australia. The Deadline for paper submissions is close: 4th May P11 Social lives of and on computers, technology and the internet Convenor: Jonathan Marshall (University of Technology, Sydney) The material basis of many social interactions throughout the world is provided by computer software or other forms of technology such as mobile phones, local two-way radio and so on. It is even possible that the material structures of communication form the ‘new’ infrastructure of global information capitalism. This relatively new situation opens up many ways of thinking about anthropology and what it can contribute to the world. The panel invites people to reflect upon the interaction of people, culture and communication within these forms of materiality. Questions that could be considered include: What happens to the ‘locale’ of communication, or indeed what happens to conceptions of the local? How do these forms of communication subvert, reinforce and extend existing cultural and social modes of action or understanding? Can what seems to be an extension or reinforcement, also induce disruption? How is the technology of communication and labour designed and implemented? How is technology changed by its users consciously or unconsciously? What are the social dynamics of software? What kinds of social organisations form ‘around’ communication technologies? What are the dynamics of living online? What are the social experiences of international call centre workers? What are the myths and motifs that are growing up around the technology of communication? What does all this tell us about the materiality, or ‘material base’ of socio-culture? Both primarily theoretical and completely ethnographic-descriptive papers are welcome. Please submit your abstracts by email to Jon Marshall jon.marshall(a)uts.edu.au by Friday, 4th May 2012. More Panels from the same conference at: http://www.uq.edu.au/aasconf2012/panels Please further note, as additional attractions: P1 The anthropology of media Convenors: Anna Cristina Pertierra (the University of Queensland) and Heather Horst (RMIT). P20 Build your own ethnograph: Creative reflections on ethnography and technology Convenor: Kirrily Thompson (Central Queensland University) plus much other intersting stuff. The keynote speakers for the conference include: Genevieve Bell director of User Interaction and Experience in Intel Labs, author of *Divining the Digital Future: Mess and Mythology in Ubiquitous Computing*. Thomas Hylland Eriksen who will be talking about "The three crises of globalisation: Culture, climate, finance". hope to see you there. jon UTS CRICOS Provider Code: 00099F DISCLAIMER: This email message and any accompanying attachments may contain confidential information. FW: Call for Papers: International Journal of McLuhan Studies
by Alex Kuskis 26 Apr '12

26 Apr '12

International Journal of McLuhan Studies Call for Papers The International Journal of McLuhan Studies seeks contributions for each monograph issue, embracing different theoretical and methodological approaches, to review McLuhan's critical thought as represented in his lectures and writings. The aim of the Journal is to open a dialogue between academics, researchers, teachers, artists and business people, in order to relate the contributions of Marshall McLuhan to contemporary questions focused on issues of production, co-production and the consumption of media, intelligence, education, memory, identity, desire, art, design, collaboration and technology in the society of knowledge. Spring-Summer 2012, Issue 2 Education Overload >From Total Surround to Pattern Recognition Streams: Alternative learning environment, collaborative learning, digital natives, educational computing, educational gaming, educational media ecology, edupunk, edutainment, e-portfolios, e-readers & iPads, figure-ground analysis, information literacy, invisible learning, digital literacy, learning analytics, learning biologies, learning interfaces, learning economies, massive online open courses (MOOC), new pedagogies, social-media driven education, tertiary orality, training of perception, web learning, wiki culture. Call for papers: The United Nations General Assembly in 2002 declared the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development: a ten-year period from 2005 to 2014 in which it is increasingly evident that education, culture and the way children are brought up form the keys for peaceful co-existence and a sustainable future. Education was one of the central concerns of McLuhan's work. Marchessault (2008) writes that McLuhan's total body of work expresses "a deeply and consistently pedagogical project" (p. 4). The two volumes Report on Project in Understanding New Media (1960), commissioned by the National Association of Educational Broadcasters, and The City as Classroom: Understanding Language and Media (1977) open a wide perspective on education, pedagogy and media in the Electronic Era. Marshall McLuhan's ideas on education and learning were proposed in lectures and writings, mainly during the 1950s, '60s and '70s. Harshly critical of the "place-based, book-paced" educational practices of the time, McLuhan offered a compelling vision of learning to replace lectures with active student participation, interaction and involvement, engaging learners in discovery learning, rather than pre-packaged teacher and textbook-delivered content to be regurgitated on tests. His vision of "classrooms without walls" included a transition from hardware to software, redefinition of teacher roles, elimination of subjects, reform of assessment, and the use of instructional media, not just books. The curriculum would focus on media literacy and include the training of perception through figure/ground analysis and the inclusion of arts education. Noting the trend toward "learning a living", the constant upgrading of knowledge and skills by professional workers, he anticipated today's emphasis on lifelong learning and workplace training. If McLuhan's writings and lectures on media anticipate the Internet, social media and global consciousness, his work on education and learning anticipates today's use of instructional media, online, collaborative and experiential learning, constructivism, as well-as lifelong learning and other current trends in education. He noted in 1967 that: "The little red schoolhouse is already well on its way toward becoming the little round schoolhouse", foreshadowing the arrival of the most powerful learning platform yet devised - the Internet. Traditional classrooms and the global village would give way to a global "classroom without walls". Contemporary society is presently facing a situation of "education overload", in which the information environment outside of schools is far richer than that inside of schools, in which virtual environments offer a multifaceted and complex dimension for learning practices, in which people suffer the limits, and benefit of the possibilities of this "total surround" of information and knowledge. In this scenario traditional pedagogies no longer suffice for a world that calls for new visions, tools and skills for training in perception and pattern recognition. The International Journal of McLuhan Studies invites the submission of full papers related to these themes (8000 words maximum, references not included). All submitted papers will be refereed and the authors of those accepted will be notified, accompanied by revision suggestions where necessary, and asked to submit a camera ready version to be published in Issue 2 of IJMS. Details: Deadline for full paper submissions: June 3rd, 2012. First step: double blind peer review - Full paper submission, maximum 8000 words, references not included - Submission opens April 30th and close June 3rd 2012 - Papers must be electronically submitted according to the guidelines published on the website (www.mcluhanstudies.com) Second Step: - Papers accepted will receive detailed feedback and suggestions for revision, where necessary, to be taken into consideration before submission of the camera-ready version for publication in the Journal - Every accepted paper requires proofreading by a proof reader of the mother tongue. . Some Marshall McLuhan probes and ideas on education and learning: The business of school is no longer instruction but discovery. And the business of the teaching establishment is to train perception upon the outer environment instead of merely stenciling information upon the brain pans of children inside the environment The goal of science and the arts and of education for the next generation must be to decipher not the genetic but the perceptual code. In a global information environment, the old pattern of education in answer-finding is of no avail: one is surrounded by answers, millions of them, moving and mutating at electric speed. Survival and control will depend on the ability to probe and to question in the proper way and place. As the information that constitutes the environment is perpetually in flux, so the need is not for fixed concepts but rather for the ancient skill of reading that book, for navigating through an ever uncharted and unchartable milieu. Else we will have no more control of this technology and environment than we have of the wind and the tides. What is indicated for the new learning procedures is not the absorption of classified and fragmented data, but pattern recognition with all that that implies of grasping relationships (...) We seem to be approaching the age when we shall program the environment instead of the curriculum. There is no kind of problem that baffles one or a dozen experts that cannot be solved at once by a million minds that are given a chance simultaneously to tackle a problem. The satisfaction of individual prestige, which we formerly derived from the possession of expertise, must now yield to the much greater satisfactions of dialogue and group discovery. The task yields to the task force. .continue online at www.mcluhanstudies.com

Call for short papers: "Words and Networks" workshop at ACM Web Science Conference 2012
by David Reitter 26 Apr '12

26 Apr '12

Call for short papers: Words and Networks: Language Use in Socio-Technical Networks (WON 2012) We solicit short papers for a workshop on research at the nexus of text analysis and network analysis. The workshop will be held at the ACM Web Science 2012 Conference in Evanston, IL, on June 22nd (http://www.websci12.org/) Workshop webpage: http://people.lis.illinois.edu/~jdiesner/calls/WON_2012.html. While text analysis and network analysis have evolved into mature yet still quickly advancing fields, new work at their intersection emerges that enhances our understanding of the transformative role that language can play in networks and the relationship between information and networks. By jointly considering text data and network data we can analyze networks along multiple dimensions of human behavior. This has facilitated eminent work on collective problem solving through information propagation, language change, and the adoption of beliefs and sentiments, to name a few areas. The overarching goal with this workshop is to bring together people that bridge the gap between text analysis and network analysis, and to discuss current advances and challenges in this new field. What and how to submit: We welcome short papers (2-6 pages) on algorithmic, methodological and applied empirical work that considers text data and network data. We are also interested in computational solutions that support this process. Please submit your paper EasyChair (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=won2012) Please use the Word or LaTeX templates for WebSci12 for you submission (http://www.websci12.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/WebSci-Proceedings-Templ…) Topics of interest include: - Semantic network analysis - Information networks - Mental maps - Joint utilization of natural language processing or computational linguistics and network analysis, e.g. in the context of social media analytics - Evolution and change of language, trust and reputation in online and offline settings Important dates: May 16: Short papers due May 25: Acceptance notes sent out June 08: Final version of short papers due June 22: Workshop June 22-24: Web Science Conference, Evanston, Illinois, USA Organizers: Jana Diesner University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The iSchool/ Graduate School of Library and Information Science Web: http://people.lis.illinois.edu/~jdiesner/ David Reitter Carnegie Mellon University, Dept. of Psychology and Penn State, College of Information Sciences and Technology Web: http://www.david-reitter.com Program Committee: Christian Baden, Ludwig Maximilian University Munich Moira Burke, Facebook Lee Giles, Penn State University Scott Golder, Cornell University Georg Groh, Technical University Munich Anatoliy Gruzd, Dalhousie University Peter Landwehr, Carnegie Mellon University Winter Mason, Stevens Institute of Technology Eduarda Mendes Rodrigues, University of Porto Wouter van Atteveldt, University Amsterdam John Yen, Penn State University

Mobile Interfaces in Public Spaces
by Adriana de Souza e Silva 26 Apr '12

26 Apr '12

Apologies for the self-promotion, but I just would like to bring to your attention my newest book (co-authored with Jordan Frith), which has just been published by Routledge. Mobile Interfaces in Public Spaces: Locational Privacy, Control, and Urban Sociability Adriana de Souza e Silva & Jordan Frith Short Description Mobile phones are no longer what they used to be. Not only can users connect to the Internet anywhere and anytime, they can also use their devices to map their precise geographic coordinates – and access location-specific information like restaurant reviews, historical information, and locations of other people nearby. The proliferation of location-aware mobile technologies calls for a new understanding of how we define public spaces, how we deal with locational privacy, and how networks of power are developed today. In Mobile Interfaces in Public Spaces, Adriana de Souza e Silva and Jordan Frith examine these social and spatial changes by framing the development of location-aware technology within the context of other mobile and portable technologies such as the book, the Walkman, the iPod, and the mobile phone. These technologies work as interfaces to public spaces – that is, as symbolic systems that not only filter information but also reshape communication relationships and the environment in which social interaction takes place. Yet rather than detaching people from their surroundings, the authors suggest that location-aware technologies may ultimately strengthen our connections to locations. TOC: Section I: Mobile Interfaces in Public Spaces 1. Interfaces to public spaces 2. The public and the private 3. From voice to location Section II: Location-awareness in the contemporary city 4. Locational privacy 5. Power in location awareness 6. The presentation of location About the Authors: Adriana de Souza e Silva is Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at North Carolina State University. Her research focuses on how mobile and locative interfaces shape interactions with public spaces and create new forms of sociability. She is the co-editor of Digital Cityscapes: Merging Digital and Urban Playspaces, and co-author of Net-Locality: Why Location Matters in a Networked World, Jordan Frith is a doctoral candidate in North Carolina State University's Communication, Rhetoric and Digital Media program. His main research interests are locative media and space, particularly how locative media may influence interactions in urban spaces. He has recently been published in the journals Mobilities and Communication, Culture, and Critique.　 http://www.amazon.com/Mobile-Interfaces-Public-Spaces-Sociability/dp/041550… ______________________________ Adriana de Souza e Silva, PhD Associate Professor of Communication NC State University http://www.souzaesilva.com Lead organizer ICA Mobile Communication pre-conference 2012 http://sociomobile.org/mobile2012/index.html

2nd call: Digital Methods Summer School 2012
by Anne Helmond 25 Apr '12

25 Apr '12

Dear all, The Digital Methods Initiative (DMI) will host its 6th annual Summer School from 25 June to 6 July 2012 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This year's theme is “Reality mining, and the limits of digital methods.” It is organized for new media researchers (broadly conceived), and is open to (early stage) PhD candidates, advanced master's degree students, recent graduates and motivated scholars. It is a working Summer School, in that all participants work on projects, collectively conceived, that explore this year's theme, trace mining. The Summer School is a training program, where participants receive a certificate of completion. It is also an intensive (and rewarding) workshop environment, where participants work in teams, tracing and mapping data, objects and issues. DMI also invites special guests as resource people to present their research and projects in morning lectures. There is a final presentation where the Summer School accomplishments are presented to participants and invitees. Below please find the call for participation. Please note that the application deadline is Friday 4 May 2012. Candidates will be notified on Tuesday 8 May 2012. Feel free to forward the call to interested individuals. Looking forward to your application and to the Summer School, the Digital Methods team Call for participants Digital Methods Summer School 2012 New Media and Digital Culture Dept. of Media Studies, University of Amsterdam 25 June - 6 July 2012 https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/DmiSummer2012 Reality mining, and the limits of digital methods When it becomes simple to trace your friend’s network, your movements online and even the provenance of the can of Coke next to your computer screen, reality becomes subject to prediction and to speculation -- in both the financial and the philosophical sense. This transparency discourse is limited by access to data. Indeed, our actions often generate effect far in excess of our own awareness -- how “open” is the open graph really? The concept of “ethical traceability” has been developed for instance as a regulatory discourse to ensure the security of supply chains, yet in spite of the proliferation of digital traces, consumers have only very limited access to these logistical data. How then do we use digital methods to become more “aware”? Can we adapt our methods to work in recommended or relatively closed environments? How do we use devices to test their claims, but also to reveal and circumvent their blind alleys? After developing a semiotics and structuralism of the link and the network, we explore how digital methods deal with notions of absence. Building on past work in post-demographics and networked content, these workshops will unpack the paradox of online awareness, from social recommendation devices to product and service review sites. Building tools and working with leaked data, our approach this time will be to go beyond merely tracing things in order to make mute objects speak. About "Digital Methods" as Concept Digital methods is a term coined as a counter-point to virtual methods, which typically digitize existing methods and port them onto the Web. Digital methods, contrariwise, seek to learn from the methods built into the dominant devices online, and repurpose them for social and cultural research. That is, the challenge is to study both the info-web as well as the social web with the tools that organize them. There is a general protocol to digital methods. At the outset stock is taken of the natively digital objects that are available (links, tags, threads, etc.) and how devices such as search engines make use of them. Can the device techniques be repurposed, for example by remixing the digital objects they take as inputs? Once findings are made with online data, where to ground them? With more online data? About the Summer School The Digital Methods Summer School, founded in 2007 together with the Digital Methods Initiative, is directed by Professor Richard Rogers, Chair in New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam. The Summer School is one training opportunity provided by the Digital Methods Initiative (DMI). DMI also has a Winter School, which includes a mini-conference, where papers are presented and responded to. Winter School papers are often the result of Summer School projects. The Summer School is coordinated by two PhD candidates in New Media at the University of Amsterdam, or DMI affiliates. This year the coordinators are Lonneke van der Velden and Marc Tuters both of the University of Amsterdam. The Summer School has a technical staff as well as a design staff. The Summer School also relies on a technical infrastructure of some five servers hosting tools and storing data. Participants bring their laptops, learn method, undertake research projects, make reports, tools and graphics and write them up on the Digital Methods wiki. We combine practical work with reading sessions in which we reflect on the possibilities and limits of our methods and develop new ideas. Next to a reader, online video tutorials will be provided beforehand. The Summer School concludes with final presentations. Often there are guests from non-governmental or other organizations who present their issues. For instance, Women on Waves came along during the 2010 Summer School. Digital Methods people are currently interning at Greenpeace International and the Global Reporting Initiative. This year, we invited Metahaven, a research and design studio that reflects on political and social issues in provocative design objects. Previous Digital Methods Summer Schools, 2007-2011: https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/DmiSummerSchool 2011 Summer School flickr stream: http://bit.ly/q9fepW The Digital Methods Initiative was founded with a grant from the Mondriaan Foundation, and the Summer School is supported by the Center for Creation, Content and Technology (CCCT), University of Amsterdam, hosted by the Faculty of Science with support from Platform Beta.
