[image: Journal of Virtual Worlds Research]<http://jvwresearch.org?utm_source=Journal+of+Virtual+Worlds+Research+Announ…> [image: SLACTIONS 2012 Research Conference in the Second Life World]<http://www.slactions.org/2012/?page_id=2&utm_source=Journal+of+Virtual+Worl…> Dear members, The Journal of Virtual Worlds Research (JVWR) is happy to support this call for SLACTIONS 2012 4th Research Conference on Virtual Worlds Life, imagination, and work using metaverse platforms November 15-17, 2012 http://www.slactions.org/<http://www.slactions.org/?utm_source=Journal+of+Virtual+Worlds+Research+Ann…> The metaverse is emerging, through the increasing use of virtual world technologies that act as platforms for end-users to create, develop, and interact, expanding the realm of human cooperation, interaction, and creativity. *The conference focus is scientific research* on applications and developments of these metaverse platforms: Habbo Hotel, IMVU, Second Life, OpenSimulator, Open Croquet, Activeworlds, Open Wonderland, Minecraft, and others, including MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft, and virtual worlds based on social networks, such as *-ville and others, providing a forum for the research community to present and discuss innovative approaches, techniques, processes, and research results. SLACTIONS 2012 is the fourth edition of SLACTIONS, which was the first international conference held simultaneously in several countries on the topic of metaverse platforms. *SLACTIONS aims at covering most areas currently enabled by metaverse platforms, from educational research to content production, from gender studies to media distribution, and from metaverse-based branding, advertising, and fundraising to emerging mash-ups and technology applications.* SLACTIONS is unique in its format too, as a *one-of-a kind event conducted both in a metaverse platform (Second Life) and on-site in multiple countries throughout the world.* SLACTIONS will thus contribute to the current redefinition of the way we think about hybrid online and on-site scholarly collaborations. Whereas metaverse platforms are no longer a novel topic, they still pose challenges for the adaption of conventional instructional and business practices, research methodologies, and communication practices. We are looking forward to presenting a program of research results, case studies, panel discussions, and demonstrations that scholars, educators, and businesses can port to their own environments and apply in their research, teaching, and business strategy. *We will accept papers from the full spectrum of intellectual disciplines and technological endeavors in which metaverse platforms are currently being used: from Education to Business, Sociology to Social Sciences, Media Production to Technology Development, Architecture and Urban Planning to the Arts.* 1. Topics covered may include but are not limited to: - Accessibility in metaverse platforms - Advanced scientific visualization in metaverse platforms - Automatic content generation - Behavioral studies in the metaverse - Combination of metaverse platforms with external systems (e-learning, e-business, etc.) - Communicational paradigms in the metaverse - Content management and production - Creativity, design, and arts on the metaverse - E-business and e-commerce applications - Educational research, applications, and case studies - Embodiment in metaverses and Gender Studies - GIS/metaverse mash-ups - Integration between metaverse platforms - Nonprofit activities and fundraising - Adapting and developing research methodologies for metaverses - Social Sciences studies in or through metaverse platforms - Space representation, use, and management in metaverses - Using metaverse platforms for cooperation 2. Format SLACTIONS has the format of a hybrid online and physical conference. All paper presentations and plenary sessions by guest speakers will be held on-line in the Second Life virtual world, and projected locally at local chapters, for participants attending physically. Physical participants can interact with the online participants via a "physical chapter avatar" and microphone. Participants will also be able to follow the proceedings broadcast on the Web and interact via a text chat applet. Workshops and other events are conducted locally – or in mixed format across several participating chapters – and local chapters may held local topical round tables. 3. Publication venues All accepted papers and posters will be published on-line and in ISBN-registered digital proceedings. Video posters and live presentations can submit an abstract for inclusion in the digital proceedings. The authors of the best papers will be invited to provide revised and expanded versions for publications in special editions of journals or as single contributions to theme-specific journals. - Journal of Virtual Worlds Research: Selected papers will be fast-tracked for publication in early 2013 issues of JVWR. (ISSN 1941-8477) - Computer & Graphics - International Journal of Systems & Applications in Computer Graphics: Authors of the Best Paper in computer graphics themes will be invited to submit an extended version to be considered for journal publication. Mobile Media Reader, out now
by Noah Arceneaux 24 Apr '12

24 Apr '12

I wanted to let everyone know that our book on mobile media is now out, The Mobile Media Reader , ed. by Noah Arceneaux and Anandam Kavoori (Peter Lang, 2012) http://www.peterlang.com/index.cfm?event=cmp.ccc.seitenstruktur.detailseite… I'm pasting the official blurb from the back of the book below, along with the table of contents. Portable phones were once limited to voice and text messaging, though these devices are now miniature multi-media centers that can fit neatly in one’s pocket. Media industries off all types are adapting content for this new platform, or innovating entirely new forms. In the light of the explosive growth of this technology, *The Mobile Media *offers a diverse collection of essays that establish conceptual, critical frameworks for evaluating the latest transformation of the media landscape. Some essays explore older phenomenon, such as C.B. radio, automobile radio, and hand-held video games, to provide a historical context, while others unpack the behind-the-scenes negotiations that determine what kinds of services are available to consumers. *The Mobile Media Reader* provides a road map for both scholars and beginning students to examine the social, cultural, and commercial implications of media that is available anywhere at any time. Table of Contents Foundations (part one) 1) Historicizing Mobile Media: Locating the Transformations of Embodied Space, by Jason Farman 2) Calling Ahead: Cinematic Imaginations of Mobile Media’s Critical Affordances, by Scott W. Ruston 3) Analog Analogue: U.S. Automotive Radio as Mobile Medium by Matthew A. Killmeier 4) CB Radio: Mobile Social Networking in the 1970s Noah Arceneaux 5) A Brief History of U.S. Mobile Spectrum Thomas W. iED: European Immersive Education Summit Call for Papers, Posters and Demonstrations
by Hasler Beatrice 23 Apr '12

23 Apr '12

***please distribute; with apologies for cross-postings*** CALL FOR PAPERS, POSTERS AND PRESENTATIONS 2nd European Immersive Education Summit World's leading immersive learning experts and practitioners convene November 26-27 in Paris, France http://europe.immersiveeducation.org/events/ied-europe-summit-2012 Important Dates Paper submission: 27th July 2012 Notification of acceptance: 28th September 2012 Final paper submission: 26th October 2012 Summit: 26th-27th November 2012 Overview The theme for the 2nd European Immersive Education (iED) Summit is: Immersive Education: combining creativity, art and pedagogy The two-day event is open to the global academic community and experts in immersion, simulation, learning games, virtual reality and full, augmented and mixed reality. The École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (EnsAD) in Paris has the mission to provide artistic, scientific and technical training for creative designers engaged in design and research in all aspects of the decorative arts. EnsAD is involved in research on the creation of artistic and shared online spaces, exploring the aesthetic and sociological implications of immersive 3D environments. The 2nd European iED summit will build on this theme, exploring how virtual spaces can be used for innovative forms of teaching and learning, fostering creativity and artistic expression. This will be rooted in new technological developments in the fields of virtual, augmented and mixed reality. There will also be a strong emphasis on pedagogy and effective design and evaluation of solutions, with case studies from active practitioners in this emerging cross-disciplinary domain. One special session will explore the uses of shared online spaces as a metamedia for creation, exposition and artistic appreciation. Some examples are: As spaces of live creation (art experimentation) As spaces for exposing and represent art (museography & design) As spaces for idea exchange and communication (collaborative platforms for artistic and academic community) Background There is a growing interest in the use of virtual and mixed-reality environments for online teaching and learning. Immersive Education gives participants a sense of "being there" even when attending a class or training session in person isn't possible, practical, or desirable, which in turn provides educators and students with the ability to connect and communicate in a way that greatly enhances the learning experience. Originally available only to university students, the next generation of Immersive Education is focused on a broad spectrum of academic and non-academic users (higher education, K-12, and corporate training). iED Summits are official Immersive Education Initiative conferences organized specifically for educators, researchers, and administrators. iED Summits consist of presentations, panel discussions, break-out sessions and workshops that provide attendees with an in-depth overview of immersive learning platforms, technologies and cutting-edge research from around the world. iED Summits feature new and emerging virtual worlds, learning games, educational simulations, mixed/augmented reality, and related teaching tools, techniques, technologies, standards and best practices. This summit will address core topics on the use of virtual and mixed-reality environments for online education and training applications. The scope will be fairly broad and will look at a range of innovative uses of virtual reality immersive environments. This could range from using and developing virtual environments through to practitioners with experience of teaching online and developing new approaches and pedagogies, including underpinning theories, human factors, pedagogy and design/evaluation strategies, case studies and more technical/scientific research topics. Submissions that have empirical results derived from virtual or mixed-reality immersive education test-beds are also encouraged. This is the second summit organised by the newly formed European Chapter of the Immersive Education Initiative (http://europe.immersiveeducation.org) and builds on the success of the previous iED Europe summit held in Madrid in November 2011.
