Conference in Second Life
by Jim Parker 19 Apr '12

19 Apr '12

The American Communication Association, http://americancomm.org/, is thinking of doing an online conference in Second Life. I have been to meetings in Second Life and found the experience to be superior to video conferencing and other alternatives for getting people together. I would be interested to know what others have tried for online conferences and especially about any experiences with conferences in Second Life. thank you, Jim Parker President American Communication Association Asst. Erickson and colleagues presented a paper at CHI 2011 about a conference in Second Life - see http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1979013 . I've been to a different conference in SL and it worked pretty well I think - however it primarily attracted experienced SL users. I'm not sure whether a large group of novices would have as good an experience. -Greg ----- from Greg Wadley The University of Melbourne http://people.eng.unimelb.edu.au/gwadley On Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 12:13 PM, Jim Parker <drjparker(a)gmail.com> wrote: > The American Communication Association, http://americancomm.org/, is > thinking of doing an online conference in Second Life. Canadian Congress Meetup?
by jeremy hunsinger 18 Apr '12

18 Apr '12

Hello Everyone, if you are interested in having a AoIR meetup at the Canadian Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences http://congress2012.ca/ let me know, I live here, and can arrange it. I'd imagine it as an informal gathering in a pub's backroom where you'll have to buy your own drinks and food, but we can meet, chat, network, etc. I've done these before elsewhere in the world, and usually we have between 5 and 20 people, but as so many Canadians and so many other colleagues from so many fields will be in town... this might be a good opportunity to informally meet. send me an email at jhuns(a)vt.edu (this is my lifetime/alumni address) Jeremy Hunsinger Communication Studies Wilfrid Laurier University Center for Digital Discourse and Culture Virginia Tech Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality. -Jules de Gaultier () ascii ribbon campaign - against html mail /\ - against microsoft attachments

Impact on Netflix on Child Patience/Media Expectations
by Steven Clift 17 Apr '12

17 Apr '12

I just asked my four year old daughter for my mobile and interrupted her grabbing a quick show on Netflix. Having two small children almost exclusively raised on Tivo and Netflix with everything on demand must have some kind of impact. With the iPad I find myself saying, play a game, color, or visit the interactive dinosaur book instead of a "show." I'd say my kids are still modest when it come to overall screen time, but this on-demand/explore a lot approach must have an impact. Anyway, is there any research into the realm of note? Re: [Air-L] Google Search Algorithms
by Neal Thomas 17 Apr '12

Hi Andrew; I found the following book to be helpful when describing both the steps to produce a search engine, and PageRank-style techniques: Langville, Amy N., and C. D. Meyer. Google's Pagerank and Beyond : The Science of Search Engine Rankings. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 2006. It starts at a relatively layperson level of explanation, getting progressively more opaque as you go along, in terms of the computer science. Others you may find helpful if they haven't already been mentioned: Chakrabarti, S.; Dom, B.E.; Kumar, S.R.; Raghavan, P.; Rajagopalan, S.; Tomkins, A.; Gibson, D.; Kleinberg, J. "Mining the Web's Link Structure." Computer 32, no. 8 (August 1999 1999): 60-67. Hansell, Saul. "Google Keeps Tweaking Its Search Engine." The New York Times, June 3, 2007 2007. Levy, Steven. "How Google’s Algorithm Rules the Web." Wired, March 2010. Segaran, Toby. "Programming Collective Intelligence Building Smart Web 2.0 Applications." Sebastapol, Calif.: O'Reilly, 2007. Hi all, Pardon the cross-posting, but I wanted to announce the publication of my new book, Time on TV: Temporal Displacement and Mashup Television (New York: Peter Lang, 2012). ISBN-10: 1433115697; ISBN-13: 978-1433115691. It relates the temporal aesthetics of contemporary television to recent changes in social media. Table of Contents: Introduction: Temporal Displacement and Mashup Television One: Television and Transgenic Media Two: Transgenic Memories Three: Personal History as Explorational Media Four: Time Travel and the Codification of Narrative/History Five: Time Travel and the Production of Narrative/History Six: Temporal Displacement as (Social) Networking Seven: The Future of (Mashup) Television? >From the book description: Time on TV examines the massive aesthetic and structural changes happening across today's television programs. Time travel, flash forwards, fake memories: Paul Booth's analysis reveals the theory and practices that are changing television and online media as we know them. His engaging examination of the mashup of television and social media uncovers a temporal complexity at the heart of our own lives. The characteristically enigmatic television narrative becomes emblematic of a very human interaction with social and digital media. A perfect book for twenty-first century television studies, media studies, or anyone who wants to know why there's so much time travel on television, Time on TV answers questions you didn't even know you had about today's television, digital technology, and our daily lives. Call for Papers: ISPR 2012 (Intl Society for Presence Research conference)
by Matthew Lombard 17 Apr '12

17 Apr '12

CALL FOR PAPERS ISPR 2012 "Presence Live!" Conference International Society for Presence Research Annual Conference Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA October 24 - 26, 2012 http://ispr.info Submission deadline: June 15, 2012 INTRODUCTION -- What´s it about? Presence, short for telepresence, happens when people use technology and overlook at least part of its role in the experience: A telepresence conferencing system makes us feel as if we´re face-to-face; an online virtual world seems real; a 3D IMAX film makes us reach out to touch objects on the screen; we get `lost´ in the worlds of novels, TV shows, movies, videogames and theme park rides; doctors, engineers, explorers and many others operate machinery thousands of miles away as if they were at the remote site; students learn about the world and workers learn how to do their jobs using compelling simulations; we think of and interact with computers, agents, avatars, robots and androids as if they were living social entities even though we know they´re not; we´re delighted by perceptual illusions in everything from ancient Trompe-l´oeil paintings to modern digital art. As we expand technology´s capabilities and applications, we´re having ever more, and ever more compelling, presence experiences. -- A New Kind of Presence conference Following a series of 13 successful PRESENCE conferences, ISPR 2012 extends presence scholarship to new audiences: ISPR is teaming with Interwork Media to produce a ground-breaking event that will showcase ISPR researchers and research studies to not only a diverse academic community in communication, computer science, psychology, philosophy, the arts, business, education and other fields, but to researchers and professionals in commercial, government, educational and other industry sectors. Technology firms - hardware, software, infrastructure, services - will be encouraged to attend to contribute their findings and projects that support the goals of the conference. ISPR 2012 will retain the single-track format and pleasant social environment of previous conferences while featuring expanded presentations, workshops and hands-on demonstrations of presence applications, services and projects. TOPICS We seek original, high quality papers and demonstrations that contribute to our collective understanding of the power and breadth of presence phenomena and presence applications in any/every aspect of life. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Presence technologies * Mobile & ubiquitous presence * Presence applications in entertainment * Presence applications in games * Presence applications in medicine and therapy * Presence applications in the arts and humanities * Presence applications in augmented/mixed reality * Presence applications in education * Presence applications in ... * Presence theory * Measures of presence * Philosophical perspectives on presence * Psychological perspectives on presence * Neuropsychology of presence * The ethics of presence * Presence in the next 25 years All accepted papers will be collected in the official conference proceedings (with ISBN) and will be permanently available for download in the ISPR conference archive. We expect to have all accepted papers included in the ACM Digital Library. One or more special journal issues are likely as well. CONFERENCE FORMAT ISPR 2012 will have an interactive format in which all participants (attendees, presenters, invited speakers) attend each of the sessions as well as social events, allowing participants to exchange ideas and build knowledge together as the conference progresses. The first two days will feature hands-on demonstrations by researchers as well as technology and application vendors; keynote presentations and panels that feature research related to diverse presence applications; and short, dedicated workshops on a variety of topics designed to provide focused educational experiences on subjects related to presence technology, theory and measurement. The final day of the conference will feature additional academic presentations on additional presence-related topics. The language of the conference is English. VENUE The conference will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The birthplace of the nation, Philadelphia is a city rich in history and steeped in culture. It´s the fourth largest media and telecommunications market in the country, conveniently located between New York and Washington, D. C. (each approximately 2 hours away by train). Details about the conference site will be announced soon. ACCOMMODATIONS A free online hotel booking facility with specially discounted rates for conference attendees will be available via the ISPR web site. REGISTRATION Registration will be available online. Fees, which will include meals and social events, will be at or below those for previous ISPR PRESENCE conferences; every effort will be made to reduce fees for participating academics, and particularly for graduate students.
