Fwd: CFP WAVES, BITS AND BRICKS: Media & The Production of Urban Space
by christina dunbar-hester 16 Apr '12

16 Apr '12

Apologies for x-posting CFP: WAVES, BITS AND BRICKS: Media & The Production of Urban Space First Monday Special Issue Deadline for Abstracts: Friday, 16 May 2012 Deadline for Papers: Friday, 28 September 2012 CALL FOR PAPERS The ECREA Temporary Working Group “Media & The City”, the ARC Research Centre at the Catholic University of Milan and First Monday are happy to announce their collaboration for a special issue of First Monday titled WAVES, BITS AND BRICKS: Media & The Production of Urban Space, scheduled for publication in mid-2013. Matteo Tarantino and Simone Tosoni of Milan Catholic University will work with Edward Valauskas, Chief Editor of First Monday, as special editors. TOPICS As the majority of the world population has come to live in cities, urban space is ever more central as resource, commodity and medium. During the twentieth century Henri Lefebvre paved the way for the understanding of the social production of urban space as a complex and manifold process in which spatial representations, spatial practices and spatial physicality continuously interact. These interactions can also be influenced, mediated, negotiated or otherwise impacted by communication technologies, which thus become integral parts in processes of sociospatial production. Possible examples include: how technologies of geo-localization and related practices are re- shaping spaces for nightlife in contemporary cities; how metropolitan areas negotiate their social image among multiple processes of bottom-up (emerging, “grassroots”) and top-down (“branding”) representation; how mobile communication technologies entail new practices of walking and driving which contribute to re-shape transportation spaces; how new forms of Internet-based urban gaming are “gamifying” practices of cure of urban spaces (e.g. cleaning or planting flowers) rewarded through virtual “points”; the complex interplay between media representations, policies and social actors in the shaping and reshaping of contested urban spaces; the use of ICT in the planning and management of urban space. The list could go on indefinitely. WAVES, BITS AND BRICKS intends to focus precisely on these forms of interplay, with the objective of charting how media concretely impact on urban spaces in different geographical and historical contexts. As such, approaches disjointed from their concrete impact on spatial production (e.g. taxonomies of city representations in cinema or analyses of mobile communications focused on users alone) are discouraged. As the relationships between media and sociospatial production can be approached through a variety of paradigms, contributions are encouraged from fields such as planning and architecture, semiotics, science & technology studies, urban sociology and anthropology, communication studies. Empirical and theoretical contributions are welcome, as are critical reviews of existing approaches to the media/sociospatial production nexus. SUBMISSIONS Contributors are invited to first submit abstracts to Matteo Tarantino (matteo {dot} tarantino {AT} unicatt.it) and Simone Tosoni (simone {dot} tosoni {AT} unicatt.it), who will be happy to provide editorial assistance. Deadline for abstracts submission is Friday, 16 May 2012. Authors of accepted papers will be notified via email by May 31th 2012. Abstracts will have to be in English, about 500 words of length and containing clear theoretical and methodological outlines. Deadline for full text submission is Friday 28 September 2012. Papers’ length will be around 5,000 words. Papers will then undergo double-blind peer-review, and authors will be notified with the reviewers’ comments by December 15th 2012. Deadline for the submission of final, revised papers is Friday 15 February 2013. Guidelines for authors can be found on the First Monday Web site at http://www.firstmonday.org/guidelines.html. conference paper

Dear Colleagues, Here is a link to Michael Paulsen and my paper: "The challenge of social media – between prohibition and indifference in the classroom" http://pure.au.dk/portal/files/45108803/MEA_2012_Taekke.pdf It is a contribution to the Thirteenth Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association: The Crossroads of the Word. 7 - 10 June 2012 Manhattan College Riverdale, New York. Abstract: Like with the emergence of oral language and the invention of writing, printing, and electronic media, today digital media entail a revolution of society. In our present time we are living through the incunabula of a digital revolution. This means that many things in society find new forms, and we must find new ways of doing things, because our media milieu has changed. Also in schools many things are changing; the classroom is no longer a closed room where interaction is isolated from the external world. Thousands of parallel interaction systems are intermingling within the social situations in classrooms, and many problems arise because of missing adequate norms. Students can now access knowledge in the Internet’s thousands of databases and wikis. The upshot is that the old teacher authority and traditional social norms for guiding teaching can no longer help outline efficient behavior in the classrooms. On this basis, we present the action research project Socio Media Education, which tries to develop new ways of teaching that feed to the new media environment. The aim of the paper is, on an early stage, to report about the challenge of the new social media and how the project tries to find solutions and the philosophy behind these solutions. New book out: 'Technologies of Inclusion: Gender in the Information Society'
by Els Rommes 16 Apr '12

16 Apr '12

Knut H. Sørensen, Wendy Faulkner and Els Rommes 'Technologies of Inclusion: Gender in the Information Society' see: http://butikk.tapirforlag.no/en/node/1744 The Information Society is an evolving project, with new 'ensembles' of social practices and of information and communication technologies (ICTs) emerging all the time. But not everyone is equally included in this project. Breaking new ground with its focus on inclusion, and drawing on an extensive body of European research, Technologies of Inclusion: Gender in the Information Society analyses a range of strategies which succeeded in attracting more women and girls as users or designers of ICTs. This reveals a set of underlying dynamics -- what the authors call technologies of inclusion -- by which different strategies work. It also highlights new gender-ICT ensembles which challenge long-held notions of technology as a masculine domain. Professor Ulf Mellström, Centre for gender research, University of Karlstad wrote about this book: "This book is a must, for scholars interested in shifting gender-technology relations and for practitioners interested in effective digital inclusion. Indeed, for anyone interested in the evolving project of the Information Society. This timely and important volume summarises much of the contemporary scholarly discussions within gender and technology studies. The uniqueness of the book is due to its empirical richness in combination with cutting edge theoretical orientation. As this group of experienced scholars have been able to cross-fertilise in-depth case studies with a long history of theoretical development in GTS, they are able to produce what must be counted as the most inclusive standard scholarly reference for many years to come."

Some of the questions that we will address in this talk include: Why is privacy important? Why is it so complex? What are the different meanings of "privacy"? How does "privacy" translate to technical properties and how do these relate to classical security properties? Lecture 2: Addressing Surveillance and Privacy during Requirements Engineering: The challenge of search and behavioral advertising (by Seda Gürses) Privacy is a debated notion with various definitions that are also often vague. While this increases the resilience of the privacy concept in social and legal context, it poses a considerable challenge to defining the privacy problem and the appropriate solutions to address those problems in a system-to-be. Surveillance can be summed up as “any collection and processing of personal data, whether identifiable or not, for the purposes of influencing or managing those whose data have been garnered” (Lyon, 2001). One of the main concerns with any type of surveillance is social sorting, a form of classifying people based on surveillance data that may lead to real effects on the life-chances of people. In the context of web-based search, given its current integration with targeted and behavioral advertisement, different parties raise concerns with respect to privacy and surveillance. From an engineering perspective this raises questions about whether and how these matters can be addressed when engineering information systems? Ideally, when engineering systems, the stakeholders of the system step through a process of reconciling the relevant privacy and surveillance definitions and the (technical) privacy solutions in the given social context. We will explore methods to define and elicit concerns based on different privacy and surveillance notions; summarize the desired steps of a multilateral requirements analysis approach; and discuss how these methods can be applied in the context of web based search and behavioral advertising. Lyon, D. (2001). Surveillance society: Monitoring everyday life. Buckingham, UK: Open University Press. Lecture 3: Web mining and privacy: threats, opportunities, and design issues (by Bettina Berendt) Web mining is the application of data mining techniques on Web data such as queries and other records of usage, social-network profiles and friend links, or news, blogs and tweets. Data mining means finding new knowledge that was previously only implicit in data. Web mining thus operates on many personal data that keep growing in volume and interrelatedness, and it0leads to inferences on inferences and groups that may be beneficial for some but unwanted-to-pernicious for others. In this lecture, I will first give an overview of mining techniques and typical uses such as profiling. I will then describe methods that have been proposed for protecting personal data from unwanted inferences (privacy-preserving data mining) or for reducing the risks of releasing these data (privacy-preserving data publishing). I will investigate the roles in the mining process (who is doing the mining on whose data of what sorts) and identify threats and opportunities in different settings that range from business intelligence to feedback and awareness tools for user empowerment. I will conclude with thoughts on what "privacy by design" may mean in the context of Web mining. Lecture 4: Social perspective on (dis)empowerment of users in an internet environment (by Jo Pierson) In a society where people increasing rely on search engines and social media for communication and information sharing, it is vital to investigate these new forms of mediated communication from the social perspective of users/citizens/consumers. However in this transitional digital media ecosystem we observe how people can become simultaneously empowered as well as disempowered, in particularly on the levels of identity, privacy and surveillance. How this works out depends on the interrelationship between how internet systems are being designed (i.e. what they enable) and what people within their social context do with these systems (i.e. are able to do). In this way we notice for example that users of search engines and social media are foremost framed as consumers, and where 'relevance' is foremost posited as 'commercial relevance'. Questions are therefore: How can governance and power manifest itself through the algorithm? To what extent and how are the social practices by citizens and communities following, opposing and/or negotiating the 'governance' of internet systems? In what ways is the social self increasingly being commodified, with personal data becoming the new currency? In what way can a socio-technological perspective offer solutions? Lecture 5: Technologies for private search (by Claudia Diaz) Search queries are closely related to the issues on which we are interested. This raises privacy concerns, as potentially sensitive information can be inferred from these queries, such as income level, health issues, or political beliefs. In this talk we will review different technologies for implementing private search services. This includes cryptographic techniques such as private information retrieval, as well as obfuscation-based private web search based on automatically generating fake queries. Lecture 6: (Re)introducing privacy by design: the realm of search engines (by Eleni Kosta) Building legally compliant systems that process personal information is turning into a nightmare for online business. The quest for finding the balance between the privacy of the users on the one hand, and the maximization of the profit of online business, usually deriving from the processing of user information, on the other, proves to be a difficult task. This lecture will present the initiatives of the European Commission in the frame of the reform of the European Data Protection Directive to achieve such a balance. The case of search engines, who collect and process vast amounts of use information is going to be used as an example. ================================================================================= *** Interactive exercise sessions Exercise session 1 In this session the students will identify the stakeholders and describe their interests and stakes in the system. This will include: their incentives, their interests, and the identification of potential conflicts between their interests. Exercise session 2 In this session the students will specify the functionality, domain, and trust assumptions of the system. They also construct an initial model of the information that is necessary to fulfill the functionality of the system. Exercise session 3 In this session the participants will identify the legal frameworks that apply, describe the legal roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders and their data protection requirements, and discuss the societal implications of the system linked to power relations between different stakeholders. They will also conduct an analysis of the privacy concerns of the stakeholders and the service integrity guarantees (i.e., threat and security analysis). Exercise session 4 In this session the participants will further refine the definition of privacy goals and provide suggestions for privacy technologies that could be used in the system. The participants are asked to apply some of the things they learned in the lectures to the system they are developing. The specific choices of technical solutions to be used in the system will require re-thinking of the applicability of legal frameworks, the concrete functionality and the information model. Exercise session 5 In this session the participants will consolidate their conclusions and prepare the presentation for the rest of the course participants that will take place in the last session of the course.
