Book: The Videogame Ethics Reader
by Casey O'Donnell 05 Apr '12

05 Apr '12

There is a edited collection out (full disclosure: yes, I'm a contributor) that may be of use/interest to AoIR'ers: The Videogame Ethics Reader (Revised First Edition) Edited by Jose P. Zagal "Essential reading for anyone interested in the moral dimensions of contemporary play." —Chris Bateman, game designer, philosopher, and author of "Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames" and "Imaginary Games" "...a thoughtful book for anyone interested in the importance and impact of games in our lives." —Drew Davidson, Director, Entertainment Technology Center - Pittsburgh Carnegie Mellon University Videogames are the dominant art form of the 21st century. How we go about designing and creating them, what we choose to say and express with them, and how we engage with and play them, reflects and informs our behavior and broader understanding of morality and ethics. In this book, Zagal has collected a series of essays that offer an amazing array of perspectives and views. Game designers, sociologists, legal scholars, media theorists, game researchers, philosophers, and more, all offer their views and insights on varied and diverse sets of issues. Topics include potential effects of violent content in videogames, cheating and anti-social behavior, business practices in the games industry, social and cultural diversity and representation in games, moral values in games and gameplay, freedom of expression, and how games are uniquely positioned as an art form to encourage players to reflect on ethics and morality. The Videogame Ethics Reader is a unique collection of writings on videogames and ethics by leading scholars and practitioners. It includes game analyses, case studies, and thought-provoking essays that serve as a valuable companion to traditional ethics textbooks. This book provides an entry point for thinking, deliberating, and discussing ethical topics surrounding videogames and their accompanying technologies. It also serves as a springboard for examining how this relatively new medium can provide us with insights on many of the moral and ethical questions that have been with us for centuries. https://titles.cognella.com/professions-and-careers/the-videogame-ethics-re… -- Casey O'Donnell, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department of Telecommunications Grady College, University of Georgia http://www.caseyodonnell.org

Creative Media Activism - A Free, Open Class #creativact Between January and March 2012 we (i.e. the Media Department at Coventry School of Art and Design: http://wwwm.coventry.ac.uk/csad/mediaandcommunication/Pages/Media_home.aspx) launched a Free and Open Undergraduate class focused on Creative Activism. We also made the class freely available online on an open basis to enable anyone worldwide to participate in the class, join in the discussions or even rip and remix our content. The class explored the potential of creative media activism by encouraging the participants to experiment with creating ‘live’ interventions as well as become involved in a number of crucial cultural, political and social debates. Over the ten week course we looked at how media activists, creatives and campaigners have used their media knowledge, connections and skills to ask difficult questions, provoke debate and raise awareness of important issues and problems in their local, national and international communities. We have now put most of the materials from the class on our website: http://www.creativeactivism.net You can also download the content and participate in the ongoing class discussion through iTunes U and the Peer 2 Peer University (P2PU). Please feel free to share. If you would like to find out more about the class, and our plans for developing the project, please contact Pete Woodbridge <p.woodbridge(a)coventry.ac.uk>. To date, the class has been supported by a range of collaborators and guest speakers, whom we would like to thank. They include: Emily James: Director of ‘Just Do It’- A Feature Documentary about Climate Change Activism John Jackson, Activist and Co-author of ‘Small Acts of Resistance: How Courage, Tenacity and Ingenuity Can Change the World Joey Skaggs, A Prolific New York Based Artist, Culture Jammer and Prankster who uses the Media as his Canvas James Cook, A Stand-up Comedian who explores what we can learn from Comedy and Satire as a means of Political and Cultural Activism Sam Gregory, Programme Director and Human Rights Advocate at WITNESS, whose work addresses the importance of video and change Tessa Houghton, Assistant Professor in Media and Communications, University of Nottingham Malaysia who analyses Hacktivism and the Public Domain Matt Mason, Author of bestseller ‘The Pirate’s Dilemma’ and Executive Director of Marketing at Bittorent Chris Jury, Activist, Broadcaster and Lecturer at Bath Spa University who presents a radio show called ‘Agitpop’- exploring the role of music and protest Charles Tsai, Campaigner at the Creative Visions Foundation and Social Creatives- Organisations that encourage creative thinking to affect positive change Ken Fero, Award Winning Radical Documentary Filmmaker – Whose work explores Power, Inequality and Injustice. -- Gary Hall Research Professor of Media and Performing Arts School of Art and Design, Coventry University Co-editor of Culture Machine http://www.culturemachine.net Co-founder of the Open Humanities Press http://www.openhumanitiespress.org Website http://www.garyhall.info Latest: 'There Are No Digital Humanities', in Debates in the Digital Humanities, edited by Matthew K. Dear Rebecca, I recommend you to check CMDA approach (Computer-mediated discourse analysis). It's more sociolinguistic approach but could be helpful in other fields as well. Especially, I recommend you the following article, which present more qualitative but still rigorous approach to online sampling: Herring, S. C. (2004). I would suggest using the principle of saturation rather than searching for a predetermined number. There are many variables that will ultimately determine the actual number (topic scope & nature, homophily, etc), but running out of finding new or interesting discoveries before stopping the data collection might make sense in your case. ~Stu -- Dr. Stuart W. Noise Channels: Glitch and Error in Digital Culture
by Peter Krapp 03 Apr '12

03 Apr '12

Published last December and already in its second printing: http://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/noise-channels Noise Channels Glitch and Error in Digital Culture 2011 * Author: Peter Krapp ToC: Introduction 1. Hypertext and Its Anachronisms 2. Terror and Play, or What Was Hacktivism? 3. Noise Floor: Between Tinnitus and Raw Data 4. Gaming the Glitch: Room for Error 5. Machinima and the Suspensions of Animation To err is human; to err in digital culture is design. In the glitches, inefficiencies, and errors that ergonomics and usability engineering strive to surmount, Peter Krapp identifies creative reservoirs of computer-mediated interaction. Throughout new media cultures, he traces a resistance to the heritage of motion studies, ergonomics, and efficiency; in doing so, he shows how creativity is stirred within the networks of digital culture. Noise Channels offers a fresh look at hypertext and tactical media, tunes into laptop music, and situates the emergent forms of computer gaming and machinima in media history. Krapp analyzes text, image, sound, virtual spaces, and gestures in noisy channels of computer-mediated communication that seek to embrace-rather than overcome-the limitations and misfires of computing. Equally at home with online literature, the visual tactics of hacktivism, the recuperation of glitches in sound art, electronica, and videogames, or machinima as an emerging media practice, he explores distinctions between noise and information, and how games pivot on errors at the human-computer interface. Grounding the digital humanities in the conditions of possibility of computing culture, Krapp puts forth his insight on the critical role of information in the creative process. With a jam-packed intellectual bandwidth, Noise Channels reconfigures how we think about digital culture. Distortion reveals system characteristics: Peter Krapp uses this classic insight to illuminate the vibrant aesthetic and practical offspring of the computer. Marx knew it, Freud knew it, and so do Krapp's fractious gang of characters. Rarely have the secret affinities among continental high theorists, engineering visionaries, and avant-garde artists been revealed so freshly. - John Durham Peters, University of Iowa Noise Channels offers an intriguing and insightful analysis of 'creative writing' under the conditions of networked computing. Ranging from hypertext to machinima, it argues that cultural creativity operates by embracing, rather than overcoming or eliminating, limitations (noise). Noise Channels is, beyond doubt, an important contribution to the field of new media studies. - Wendy Hui Kyong Chun, Brown University With Noise Channels, Krapp brings a welcome volume to an increasingly clamorous field of study. - Roy Christopher -- Peter Krapp Professor, Film & Media/Visual Studies, English, Informatics 2321 Humanities Gateway, ZOT 2435 University of California, Irvine, CA 92697-2435 http://www.faculty.uci.edu/profile.cfm?faculty_id=5102 new book: http://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/noise-channels

New Book: Cross-Cultural Technology Design
by Huatong Sun 03 Apr '12

03 Apr '12

(Apologies for cross-posting) Dear colleagues, I’m pleased to announce my new book from Oxford University Press, and I hope you find it interesting: Cross-Cultural Technology Design: Creating Culture-Sensitive Technology for Local Users http://www.oup.com/us/catalog/general/subject/Psychology/CognitivePsycholog… Companion website: http://www.oup.com/us/companion.websites/9780199744763/ Please see below for detailed book information. Best wishes, Huatong Huatong Sun, Ph.D Assistant Professor, Digital Media Studies Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences University of Washington Tacoma http://faculty.washington.edu/htsun/ ABSTRACT The demand and opportunity for cross-cultural technology design is rapidly rising due to globalization. However, all too often resulting technologies are technically usable, yet cannot be immediately put to meaningful use by users in their local, concrete contexts. Support for concrete user activities is frequently missing in design, as support for decontextualized actions is typically the focus of design. Sun examines this disconnect between action and meaning in cross-cultural technology design and presents an innovative framework, Culturally Localized User Experience (CLUE), to tackle this problem. Incorporating key concepts and methods from activity theory, British cultural studies, and rhetorical genre theory, the CLUE approach integrates action and meaning through a dialogical, cyclical design process to design technology that engages local users within culturally meaningful social practices. Illustrated with five in-depth case studies of mobile text messaging use by college students and young professionals in American and Chinese contexts spanning years, Sun calls for a change in cross-cultural design practices from simply applying cultural conventions in design to engaging with social affordances based on a rich understanding of meaningful contextualized activity. This book will be of interest to researchers, students, practitioners, and anyone who wants to create culture-sensitive technology in this increasingly globalized world that requires advanced strategies and techniques for culturally localized, participatory design. CONTENTS Part I Grounding Chapter 1 Approaching Culture in Cross-Cultural Technology Design Chapter 2 User Experience in Global Context Chapter 3 Integrating Action and Meaning in Cross-Cultural Design Chapter 4 CLUE as a Framework for Cross-Cultural User Experience Research Part II Experiences Chapter 5 Sophie's Story: New Chocolate at Work Chapter 6 Lili's Story: Pure Water in Social Network Chapter 7 Brian's Story: Conversations Carried through My Fingers Chapter 8 Mei's Story: "Idioms Solitaire" Between Sports Fans Chapter 9 Emma's Story: More than a Nice Gesture in a Technology-Mediated Life Part III Implications Chapter 10 Culturally Localized User Experience as Situated and Constructed Chapter 11 Future Directions “This insightful text offers a grounded approach to rethinking technology design, and gives a framework for creating innovative design, development, and deployment practices. Sun’s work illustrates clearly the ways in which traditional HCI and interaction design methods tend to miss the fact that technology and culture are intricately intertwined.” Elizabeth Churchill, Principal Research Scientist, Yahoo! Research and VP of ACM SigCHI “Huatong Sun offers an enlightening, but also useful set of theoretical principles, case histories, and scholarly implications that should assist researchers and analysts to bring products and services into being that are more evolved, sophisticated, humanistic, and successful.” Aaron Marcus, President, Aaron Marcus and Associates, Inc., Berkeley, California, USA “Dr. Sun’s book takes culture more seriously than most scholars working in this area, and she also provides us with some of the richest portraits of user knowledge that I have read.” Jeff Grabill, Professor of Rhetoric and Professional Writing, Michigan State University **** Feb 2012; 352 pp Hardback; 9780199744763 20% Off Promo Code: 30641
