============================================================================================ Academic MindTrek Conference 2012: Call for Papers, Extended Abstracts, Posters, Demonstrations, Workshops, Tutorials 3rd-5th October, 2012 Tampere, Finland http://www.academicmindtrek.org, http://www.mindtrek.org Long and short papers, posters, demonstrations, and extended abstracts due on: 30th April 2012 Tutorials and Workshops due on: 1st June 2012 in cooperation with ACM, ACM SIGMM, and ACM SIGCHI contributions will be published in the ACM digital library and a selected set of high-level work will be published as book chapters or in journals ============================================================================================ CALL FOR PAPERS, EXTENDED ABSTRACTS, POSTERS, DEMONSTRATIONS, WORKSHOPS & TUTORIALS We are pleased to invite you to the Academic MindTrek conference, 3rd – 5th October 2012, which brings together a cross-disciplinary crowd of people to investigate current and emerging topics of media in the ubiquitous arena. The conference explores academically the emerging and frontier-breaking applications of new media in everyday contexts of leisure, business and organizational life. October 3rd is the main Academic MindTrek day. Due increasing popularity of the conference, we are extending the scope of Academic MindTrek 2012! The academic conference features six major themes: * Social Media * Ambient & Ubiquitous Media * Business & Media * Human-Computer Interaction (new track!) * Open Source * Digital Games SOCIAL MEDIA “Get social!” Social media and Web 2.0 technologies are applied in ever diverse practices both in private and public communities. Totally new business models are emerging, traditional communication and expression modalities are challenged, and new practices are constructed in the collaborative, interactive media space. AMBIENT AND UBIQUITOUS MEDIA “The medium is the message!” – This conference track focuses on the definition of ambient and ubiquitous media with a cross-disciplinary viewpoint: ambient media between technology, art, and content. The focus of this track is on applications, location based services, ubiquitous computation, augmented reality, theory, art-works, mixed reality concepts, the Web 3.0, and user experiences that make ubiquitous and ambient media tick. MEDIA BUSINESS, MEDIA PRODUCTION AND MEDIA MANAGEMENT Media business and media management face the challenges of the emergence of new forms of digital media. This theme focuses on business studies, policies, practices, and organizational structure of media firms. It discusses competition, patterns of media usage, advertising models, and how traditional media can cope with the challenges coming from digital media focusing on media business and media management issues. HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION (HCI) The wide field of HCI is to discuss issues around human computer interaction modalities, consumer experience, design of computer systems, human aspects, universal media access, ergonomics, communication, novel interaction modalities, privacy, trusted systems, interaction theories, and sociological and psychological factors. This theme of devotes to several of these aspects, and is targeted to the scientific community dealing with several applied and theoretical aspects of HCI and user experience. OPEN SOURCE The last decade has seen a significant increase in open source initiatives such as open source software, open standards, open content, open media, or even open source hardware. On the one hand, the open movement has created new kinds of opportunities such as new business models and development approaches. On the other hand, it has introduced new kinds of technical and non-technical challenges. DIGITAL GAMES The culture and business of digital games is becoming increasingly varied. The current trends range from novel interface innovations and digital distribution channels to social game dynamics and player-generated content. The games track is open for theoretical works, empirical case studies and constructive projects. DEMONSTRATIONS The aim is to gather demonstrations from researchers and professionals from the communities related to the topics of MindTrek. The objective for the demonstrations is to provide a forum for exchanging experiences, practical projects, or media demonstrators. The target audience includes members of the academic community, industry, or laboratories who can demonstrate the results of their research projects with a practical implementation. ACADEMIC MINDTREK AS A CONFERENCE In addition, special academic sessions (e.g. tutorials, demonstrations, workshops, and multidisciplinary sessions) will be held parallel to the MindTrek business conference. Academic speakers and authors are warmly welcome to register for the business conference tracks as part of the academic conference with our special registration rate. The Academic MindTrek registration includes full service such as coffees, lunches, and social gatherings. The MindTrek Association hosts MindTrek as a yearly conference, where the Academic MindTrek conference has been a part of this unique set of events comprising competitions, world famous keynote speakers, plenary sessions, media festivals, and workshops since 1997. It is a meeting place where experts and thinkers present results from their latest work regarding the development of Internet, interactive media, and the information society. MindTrek brings together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines that are involved in the development of media in various fields, ranging from sociology and the economy, to technology. The organizing committee invites you to submit original high quality full papers, long or short, addressing the special theme and the topics, for presentation at the conference and inclusion in the proceedings. CONFERENCE PUBLICATIONS The scientific part of the conference is organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMM, and ACM SIGCHI. Conference proceedings will be published in the ACM Digital Library, which includes short and long papers, workshop proposals, demonstration proposals, and tutorial proposals. Extended abstracts will be published in the adjunct conference proceedings; however, they will not be published within the ACM Digital Library. Selected high quality papers will be published in international journals, as book chapters, edited books, or via open access journals. There will also be a reward for the overall best paper from the academic conference. Several papers should follow the style guidelines of the conference. SHORT AND LONG PAPER PROPOSALS All submissions will be peer-reviewed double blinded, therefore please remove any information that could give an indication of the authorship. Short papers should be between 2-4 pages long and the paper presentation will be 15 minutes plus 5 minutes discussion within a session; long papers should be 6-8 pages and will be presented in 20 minutes slots, plus 5 minutes discussion. CFP: Emerging Methods for Digital Media Research
by Jean Burgess 26 Mar '12

26 Mar '12

Dear colleagues, If you work in a related area, I hope you'll consider submitting something to this special issue of the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media that Axel Bruns, Larissa Hjorth and I are editing. Tweetable link: http://www.mappingonlinepublics.net/2012/01/30/call-for-papers-emerging-met hods-for-digital-media-research/ Best regards Jean ---------- Emerging Methods for Digital Media Research Special Themed Issue of the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media (JOBEM), March 2013. Guest Editors: Jean Burgess (QUT) Axel Bruns (QUT) Larissa Hjorth (RMIT) ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries & Innovation (http://cci.edu.au/) Editor: Zizi Papacharissi With the rise of Œbig data¹, locative media, and smartphones, existing media and communication studies methods are being recombined, reconfigured and replaced alongside their objects of study. This special issue of JOBEM seeks to expose new research methods for understanding the changing nature of the content industries, the impact of digital media on the practices of creative workers, and the experiences and practices of everyday users of digital media technologies. We welcome papers based in the humanities and social sciences that reflect on, discuss or critique current methodological trends in digital media research, shedding light on the following questions: 1. Where are the emerging methodological gaps - are there pressing research problems that require the development of new methods, techniques and tools? 2. Where are there needs for new combinations of methods, within or across disciplines? 3. What are the implications for future pedagogical models in internet, media and communication studies, including doctoral education and other forms of research training? We especially welcome papers grounded in the experience of conducting empirical digital media research. However we will give preference to papers that contextualise, historicise, and reflect on current methodological trends; rather than simply report on the applications or results of new methods. Abstracts of 250 words are due by 31 March, 2012. Depending on the number of abstracts received, we may shortlist submissions at this stage. Please email your abstract and a list of 3 or 4 suggested peer reviewers to: jobem.edm(a)gmail.com. Full articles of no more than 7000 words should be submitted on or before 1 August, 2012 at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hbem (select ³Special Issue: Emerging Digital Methods² as a manuscript type). Manuscripts should conform to the guidelines of the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media (http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=0883-8151&linktype=44 <http://www.beaweb.org/jobem.htm>). -- -- -- Dr Jean Burgess Deputy Director, ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries & Innovation http://cci.edu.au <http://cci.edu.au/> Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology http://creativeindustries.qut.edu.au <http://creativeindustries.qut.edu.au/> Phone: +61 3138 8253 Twitter: @jeanburgess http://twitter.com/jeanburgess Personal blog: http://creativitymachine.net <http://creativitymachine.net/> Mapping Online Publics project website: http://mappingonlinepublics.net <http://mappingonlinepublics.net/> Digital Storytelling at QUT http://digitalstorytelling.ci.qut.edu.au <http://digitalstorytelling.ci.qut.edu.au/>

(Corrected) Call for Papers: Maps of Dialogue - ISSEI Conference, Nicosia 2012‏
by Fernando Kuhn 24 Mar '12

24 Mar '12

Dear colleagues, By mistake, I have sent my previous message before having finished it. Sorry... This is the correct version. With apologies for cross-posting; please distribute widely. Many thanks, Fernando Kuhn. --------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS - ISSEI CONFERENCE NICOSIA (CYPRUS)- July 2 - 6, 2012 Maps of Dialogue - Spaces and Dimensions for the Integration of Regional Cultures This workshop aims at discussing the emergence of regional identities and cultures - either in subnational or supranational scales - and the roles they assume in the dynamics involving global, national and local instances. Although not restricted to such focus, it particularly intends to examine the dimensions that favour the interaction of regional spheres: from ways or landscapes as a convergence of diversity - "routes to roots", "the shortest distance between myriads of distinct traditions", a collective of regional identities - to vectors like media, science, language, literature, music, cinema, and many others. Discussions involving historical perspectives as well as the articulation of historical and geographic concepts (time, event, history; place, space, landscape) are welcomed and encouraged. And finally, it also has the objective of reflecting on the real or imagined boundaries that shape regional cultures and identities in a world of increasing mobility of people and ideas. Abstracts must be submitted to Fernando Kuhn (swocean(a)hotmail.com) until April 30, 2012. (For other sessions, please visit the conference website - http://issei2012.haifa.ac.il/)

Digital Methods Summer School 2012 - Call for Participants
by Anne Helmond 24 Mar '12

24 Mar '12

Dear all, The Digital Methods Initiative (DMI) will host its 6th annual Summer School from 25 June to 6 July 2012 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This year's theme is “Reality mining, and the limits of digital methods.” It is organized for new media researchers (broadly conceived), and is open to (early stage) PhD candidates, advanced master's degree students, recent graduates and motivated scholars. It is a working Summer School, in that all participants work on projects, collectively conceived, that explore this year's theme, trace mining. The Summer School is a training program, where participants receive a certificate of completion. It is also an intensive (and rewarding) workshop environment, where participants work in teams, tracing and mapping data, objects and issues. DMI also invites special guests as resource people to present their research and projects in morning lectures. There is a final presentation where the Summer School accomplishments are presented to participants and invitees. Below please find the call for participation. Please note that the application deadline is Friday 4 May 2012. Candidates will be notified on Tuesday 8 May 2012. Feel free to forward the call to interested individuals. Looking forward to your application and to the Summer School, the Digital Methods team Call for participants Digital Methods Summer School 2012 New Media and Digital Culture Dept. of Media Studies, University of Amsterdam 25 June - 6 July 2012 https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/DmiSummer2012 Reality mining, and the limits of digital methods When it becomes simple to trace your friend’s network, your movements online and even the provenance of the can of Coke next to your computer screen, reality becomes subject to prediction and to speculation -- in both the financial and the philosophical sense. This transparency discourse is limited by access to data. Indeed, our actions often generate effect far in excess of our own awareness -- how “open” is the open graph really? The concept of “ethical traceability” has been developed for instance as a regulatory discourse to ensure the security of supply chains, yet in spite of the proliferation of digital traces, consumers have only very limited access to these logistical data. How then do we use digital methods to become more “aware”? Can we adapt our methods to work in recommended or relatively closed environments? How do we use devices to test their claims, but also to reveal and circumvent their blind alleys? After developing a semiotics and structuralism of the link and the network, we explore how digital methods deal with notions of absence. Building on past work in post-demographics and networked content, these workshops will unpack the paradox of online awareness, from social recommendation devices to product and service review sites. Building tools and working with leaked data, our approach this time will be to go beyond merely tracing things in order to make mute objects speak. About "Digital Methods" as Concept Digital methods is a term coined as a counter-point to virtual methods, which typically digitize existing methods and port them onto the Web. Digital methods, contrariwise, seek to learn from the methods built into the dominant devices online, and repurpose them for social and cultural research. That is, the challenge is to study both the info-web as well as the social web with the tools that organize them. There is a general protocol to digital methods. At the outset stock is taken of the natively digital objects that are available (links, tags, threads, etc.) and how devices such as search engines make use of them. Can the device techniques be repurposed, for example by remixing the digital objects they take as inputs? Once findings are made with online data, where to ground them? With more online data? About the Summer School The Digital Methods Summer School, founded in 2007 together with the Digital Methods Initiative, is directed by Professor Richard Rogers, Chair in New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam. The Summer School is one training opportunity provided by the Digital Methods Initiative (DMI). DMI also has a Winter School, which includes a mini-conference, where papers are presented and responded to. Winter School papers are often the result of Summer School projects. The Summer School is coordinated by two PhD candidates in New Media at the University of Amsterdam, or DMI affiliates. This year the coordinators are Lonneke van der Velden and Marc Tuters both of the University of Amsterdam. The Summer School has a technical staff as well as a design staff. The Summer School also relies on a technical infrastructure of some five servers hosting tools and storing data. Participants bring their laptops, learn method, undertake research projects, make reports, tools and graphics and write them up on the Digital Methods wiki. The Summer School concludes with final presentations. Often there are guests from non-governmental or other organizations who present their issues. For instance, Women on Waves came along during the 2010 Summer School. Digital Methods people are currently interning at Greenpeace International and the Global Reporting Initiative.
