CfP - Maps of Dialogue - Nicosia 2012
by Fernando Kuhn 24 Mar '12

24 Mar '12

CALL FOR PAPERS - ISSEI CONFERENCE NICOSIA (CYPRUS)- July 2 - 6, 2010 Maps of Dialogue - Spaces and Dimensions for the Integration of Regional Cultures This workshop aims at discussing the emergence of regional identities and cultures - either in subnational or supranational scales - and the roles they assume in the dynamics involving global, national and local instances. Although not restricted to such focus, it particularly intends to examine the dimensions that favour the interaction of regional spheres: from ways or landscapes as a convergence of diversity - "routes to roots", "the shortest distance between myriads of distinct traditions", a collective of regional identities - to vectors like media, science, language, literature, music, cinema, and many others. Discussions involving historical perspectives as well as the articulation of historical and geographic concepts (time, event, history; place, space, landscape) are welcomed and encouraged. And finally, it also has the objective of reflecting on the real or imagined boundaries that shape regional cultures and identities in a world of increasing mobility of people and ideas. Abstracts must be submitted to Fernando Kuhn (swocean(a)hotmail.com) until April 30, 2012. (For other sessions, please visit the conference website - http://issei2012.haifa.ac.il/)

Dear librarians, If you work with any type of electronic resources, be it electronic journals or any digital collections, the members of my research group are very interested to have you contribute to maximizing workplace efficiency by completing a very brief anonymous survey. To give you a greater understanding of our survey, we hope to answer such questions as: What are the implications of a multi-generational library workforce, with specific regards to workflows, technology and leadership and collaboration? Or what are the strengths and weaknesses of the Millennial generation and how can they be leveraged by organizations managing electronic resources? Before completing the survey, please be advised that this survey is completely voluntary and you will not be compensated for your answers. If you consent to participate in this anonymous survey and to have your anonymous answers used in research publications, please follow the link below: https://docs.google.com/a/udayton.edu/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dE40cTVW… And please excuse the cross postings. New Book: Artificial Culture
by Tama Leaver 22 Mar '12

22 Mar '12

New Book Announcement (apologies for x-posting) Artificial Culture: Identity, Technology, and Bodies (Routledge, 2012) Tama Leaver, Curtin University Amazon http://amzn.to/wRe4PN Routledge: http://bit.ly/mivLzx Artificial Culture is an examination of the articulation, construction, and representation of "the artificial" in contemporary popular cultural texts, with a focus on science fiction films and novels, but also addressing digital culture more broadly including analysis of Wikileaks, the Visible Human Project and the emergence of synthespians. The book argues that today we live in an artificial culture due to the deep and inextricable relationships between people and technology, with human bodies as a key marker of these symbiotic connections. While the artificial is often imagined as outside of the natural order and thus also beyond the realm of humanity, paradoxically, artificial concepts are simultaneously produced and constructed by human ideas and labor. The artificial can thus act as a boundary point against which it is possible in some respects to measure what it might mean to be human. More importantly, the artificial often blurs the boundary between humans, technology and the environment at large in often purposefully unsettling ways. The core texts analysed in the book are: 2001 A Space Odyssey; the four Terminator films; Greg Egan’s novels Permutation City and Diaspora; The Visible Human Project; William Gibson’s bridge trilogy (Virtual Light, Idoru, and All Tomorrow’s Parties); Wikileaks; The Matrix films and franchise; WETA’s digital effects in the Lord of the Rings films, with a particular focus on the synthespian Gollum; the Spider-Man trilogy; Wall-E; and Avatar. Contents: Part1: Artificial Intelligence 1. Early Artificial Intelligence Films: ‘When are you going to let me out of this box? 2. "I am a machine!": Artificial Intelligences in Contemporary Cinema Part 2: Artificial Life 3. From Digital Genesis to the Artificial Other 4. Diasporic Subjectivities: Not Quite ‘Beyond the Infinite’ Part 3: Artificial Space 5. The Fortification of Place in the Digital Age 6. Resistance is Spatial 7. The Infinite Plasticity of the Digital? Part 4: Artificial Culture 8. Matrices of Embodiment 9. The Symbiosis of Special Effects Part 5: Artificial Culture 10. Before the Mourning 11. Artificial Mourning: Spider-Man, Special Effects and September 11 For slightly more information (and colour versions of the images used in the book) please visit http://www.tamaleaver.net/artificial-culture/ . CfP Platform Journal; please share widely with new academics / graduate students
by Luke J Heemsbergen 21 Mar '12

PLATFORM: JOURNAL OF MEDIA & COMMUNICATION An Interdisciplinary Journal for Early Career Researchers of Media “Automating Conduct: Autonomy in Control” (Vol 4, Issue 2) Abstract Submissions Due: APRIL 26 2012 Full Paper Submissions Due: JULY 22 2012 Platform encourages all contributions related to media studies, with special consideration currently given to engagement with the cultures, politics and social issues layered within automation and transparency. The freedoms of control that circulate in the digital networked society imbue modalities of both transparency and automation. The coupling of high technological automation with a heightened sense of surveillance implies certain forms of automated conduct as necessary, but not sufficient, for autonomy in spatiotemporal, psychological, economic and aesthetic dimensions of subjectivity and polity. Thus, locating autonomy, automation and transparency in the network becomes a critical project in both respects of the word. After WikiLeaks, can freedom be a creature of the light or the dark? Is autonomy found in the open or in the hidden and unique? What are the critical responses to automated agents that ubiquitously categorise and increasingly contribute to the construction of our social-world and its boundaries? How do they create terror and police the social, while effectively engaging themselves in ‘boundary work’? Together, automation and transparency create: issues of privacy in surveillance for mediated and inhabited spaces, asymmetries of access and temptation (e.g. online shopping & dating), and fundamental implications for literacy, living, and society. We encourage contributors to ask what opacities, reflexes, subjectivities and politics are available in what Robert Samuels (2009) terms ‘automodernity’ as society approaches indistinguishability between either of David Brin’s (1996) allegorical cities of automated transparency? PLATFORM encourages the submission of empirical and theoretical work engaging with these themes of freedom, control, transparency and automation including but not limited to: -Automation and/or transparency as a facet of everyday life -New technologies of automation and transparency and their affect on artists, protestors, publishers, and the police; -Automodernity and/or the aestehtics of the automatic -Transparency and its impact on the potential to 'represent' -Automation and/or transparency as (counter) hegemonic instruments -Challenges to social, political, and economic assumptions including relations to, and means of, production (P2P, FOSS, Venture Communism etc.); -The impact of automation and/or transparency on media production and consumption -Processes and practices of privacy within automated surveillance -The impact of automation and/or transparency on reading/writing/learning -Automation and its impact on the body (automation as prosthesis, as memory) -Legal/IP/ethical considerations in media automation and/or transparency -Methodological considerations for automation and/or transparency in research -Other critiques working across diverse fields in media and communication studies are welcome PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY! Issue Editors: Luke Heemsbergen (University of Melbourne, School of Culture and Communication) Suneel Jethani (University of Melbourne, School of Culture and Communication) Please send all enquires and submissions to platformjmc(a)gmail.com We recommend that prospective authors submit abstracts well before the abstract deadline of April 26, 2012 to allow for feedback and suggestions from the editors. All submissions should be from early career researchers (defined as being within a few years of completing their Ph.D) or current graduate students undertaking their Masters, Ph.D. or international equivalent. All eligible submissions will be sent for double-blind peer-review. Early submission is highly encouraged as the review process will commence on submission. Note: Please read the Submission Guidelines before submitting work. Submissions not in house style will not be accepted and authors will be asked resubmit their work with the correct formatting before it is sent for review. PLATFORM: Journal of Media and Communication is a fully refereed, open-access online graduate journal. Founded and published by the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne (Australia), PLATFORM was launched in November 2008. PLATFORM is refereed by an international board of established and emerging scholars working across diverse fields in media and communication studies, and is edited by graduate students at the University of Melbourne. PLATFORM invites graduate students working in disciplines related to media studies to submit to the journal. We also welcome applications for editorial positions as well as proposals to guest edit a special issue of the journal. New Book--Wordplay and the Discourse of Video Games
by Paul, Christopher 20 Mar '12

20 Mar '12

Wordplay and the Discourse of Video Games: Analyzing Words, Design and Play Routledge Studies in New Media and Cyberculture, 2012 http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415893060/ Publisher Description: In this timely new book, Christopher Paul analyzes how the words we use to talk about video games and the structures that are produced within games shape a particular way of gaming by focusing on how games create meaning, lead to identification and division, persuade, and circulate ideas. Paul examines the broader social discourse about gaming, including: the way players are socialized into games; the impact of the lingering association of video games as kid's toys; the dynamics within specific games (including Grand Theft Auto and EA Sports Games); and the ways in which players participate in shaping the discourse of games, demonstrated through examples like the reward system of World of Warcraft and the development of theorycraft. Overall, this book illustrates how video games are shaped by words, design and play; all of which are negotiated, ongoing practices among the designers, players, and society that construct the discourse of video games. Chapter List Introduction: The New Rhetoric of Video Games I. The Context 1. Socializing Gamers 2. Video Games as 'Kid's' Toys 3. Talking Game Design 4. Consoles Read Rhetorically II. The Texts 5.GTA, Humor, and Protagonists 6. EA Sports and Planned Obsolescence 7. Rearticulating Rewards in WoW 8. Theorycraft and Optimization 9. Balance and Meritocracies III. Using Wordplay 10.
