[Deadline Extended] Food for Thought: Designing for Critical Reflection on Food Practices
by Jaz Choi 16 Mar '12

16 Mar '12

Apologies for cross-posting. // Please note that the submission deadline has been extended to March 23, 2012 // CFP. DIS 2012 WORKSHOP. Food for Thought: Designing for Critical Reflection on Food Practices Newcastle, UK June 11, 2012 http://www.urbaninformatics.net/workshop/ffthought This workshop is a continuation and extension to the successful past workshops including 2011 Communities and Technologies Food(ing): Between Human-Computer and Human-Food-Experience; 2009 [4]; OZCHI workshop, Hungry 24/7? HCI Design for Sustainable Food Culture and Sustainable Interaction with Food, Technology, and the City [3], and Food and Interaction Design: Designing for Food in Everyday Life [5]. The workshop addresses the opportunities and challenges for the design of digital interactive systems that engage individuals in critical reflection on their everyday food practices – including designing for engagement in more environmentally aware, socially inclusive, and healthier behaviour. These three themes represent the focus of much recent HCI work related to food. The proposed workshop aims to further the conversation on these themes through understanding specifically how the process of critical reflection can be encouraged by interactive technology. While the focus will be on food as an application area, the intention is to also explore, more generally, how the process of critical reflection can be facilitated through interactive technology. The workshop will include a design session, where participants will be asked to respond to the challenging local issue of alcohol and fast food consumption, to create innovative design solutions that facilitate people’s engagement in critical reflection on their food consumption, ultimately leading to broader socio-cultural transformation of Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s foodscape. The workshop will provide a unique forum to discuss existing theoretical and pragmatic approaches, and to envision novel ways to design technology that encourages sustained critical reflection. Interested participants should submit position papers to Jaz Hee-jeong Choi (h.choi [at] qut.edu.au<http://qut.edu.au/>, outlining their work, brief biographies, and what they would like to gain from the workshop. Submissions should be no longer than 2 pages, in PDF Format, and styled using the DIS paper format (http://dis2012.org/dis2012format.doc) Participants will be selected based on their expertise and to ensure overall disciplinary and geo-cultural diversity. Deadline for submissions: March 23, 2012 Notification of acceptance: April 16, 2012 Workshop: June 11, 2012 We look forward to hearing from you! ***Extended deadline: March 26*** COMETS 2012 - 3rd International Track on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation - Call for Papers
by Daniele Gianni 15 Mar '12

15 Mar '12

************* Deadline Extended to March 26, 2012 *************** (Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message) ################################################################# IEEE WETICE 2012 3rd IEEE Track on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation (Comets 2012) in cooperation with AFIS (INCOSE France Chapter) MIMOS (Italian Association for M&S) CALL FOR PAPERS ################################################################# June 25-27, 2012, Toulouse (France) http://www.sel.uniroma2.it/comets12 ################################################################# # Papers Due: March 26, 2012 **** Extended Deadline **** # Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings # by the IEEE Computer Society Press and indexed by EI. ################################################################# Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is increasingly becoming a central activity in the design of new systems and in the analysis of existing systems because it enables designers and researchers to investigate systems behavior through virtual representations. For this reason, M&S is gaining a primary role in many industrial and research fields, such as space, critical infrastructures, manufacturing, emergency management, biomedical systems and sustainable future. However, as the complexity of the investigated systems increases and the types of investigations widens, the cost of M&S activities increases for the more complex models and for the communications among a wider number and variety of M&S stakeholders (e.g., sub-domain experts, simulator users, simulator engineers, and final system users). To address the increasing costs of M&S activities, collaborative technologies must be introduced to support these activities by fostering the sharing and reuse of models, by facilitating the communications among M&S stakeholders, and more generally by integrating processes, tools and platforms. Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the track seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices to the design of collaborative environments. These environments are continuously becoming more complex, and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments. A non–exhaustive list of topics of interest includes: * collaborative environments for M&S * collaborative Systems of Systems M&S * workflow modelling for collaborative environments and processes * agent-based M&S * collaborative distributed simulation * collaborative component-based M&S * net-centric M&S * web-based M&S * model sharing and reuse * model building and evaluation * modeling and simulation of business processes * modeling for collaboration * simulation-based performance evaluation of collaborative networks * model-driven simulation engineering * domain specific languages for the simulation of collaborative environments * domain specific languages for collaborative M&S * databases and repositories for M&S * distributed virtual environments * virtual research environment for M&S * collaborative DEVS M&S To stimulate creativity, however, the track maintains a wider scope and invites interested researchers to present contributions that offer original perspectives on collaboration and M&S. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On-Line Submissions and Publication +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CoMetS'12 intends to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss key issues, approaches, open problems, innovative applications and trends in the track research area. This year, we will accept submissions in two forms: (1) papers (2) poster and industrial presentations (1) Papers should contain original contributions not published or submitted elsewhere. Papers up to six pages (including figures, tables and references) can be submitted. Papers should follow the IEEE format, which is single spaced, two columns, 10 pt Times/Roman font. All submissions should be electronic (in PDF) and will be peer-reviewed by at least three program committee members. Accepted full papers will be included in the proceedings and published by the IEEE Computer Society Press (IEEE approval pending). Please note that at least one author for each accepted paper should register to attend WETICE 2012 (http://www.wetice.org) to have the paper published in the proceedings. (2) Posters should describe a practical, on-the-field, experience in any domain area using collaborative M&S. The poster submission requires the submission of an abstract for evaluation from the organizers. Accepted abstract must be followed by the submission of a poster which will be displayed at conference time. With the poster submission, a short (15 minutes) slot might be allocated for oral presentation illustrating the industrial case. The presentation may also include a live demo, but it should not include commercial details. Interested authors and participants may contact the organizers for expression of interests and content appropriateness at any time. Papers and posters can be submitted in PDF format at the submission site (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=comets2012) which is supported by the EasyChair conference management system. Full chapters due by April 15, 2012. http://www.broadbandresearch.ca/ourresearch/CFP_broadband_book.pdf > > Broadband network connectivity is becoming an essential service. Individuals use broadband to connect to friends and family, to access services (e.g., healthcare, education), make purchases, and look up information and for entertainment. Governments are increasingly turning to broadband networks as a means of providing services to their constituents, while businesses rely on broadband to connect with suppliers and customers. It is widely understood that the deployment and effective use of broadband networks can result in social and economic benefits, and for this reason, governments are encouraging the development of ?next generation? (very high speed) broadband networks. > > Despite the apparent consensus that investment in broadband networks, coupled with network adoption, does result in positive outcomes there is a paucity of research that explores the ways that benefits are actually realised. This book will discuss barriers to broadband adoption and consider the nature of demand for next generation broadband connectivity among various user groups. It will critically explore claims of the benefits of broadband deployment, providing examples of successful and unsuccessful applications and services. The book will then examine the policy environments in which broadband networks are developed, and discuss strategies for network deployment. > > This book is a cutting edge research book written for researchers, students, academics and policy makers. The authors will draw from their expertise in Information Systems, Management, Strategy, and Communications Policy to provide insights into the value of broadband connectivity. In the midst of a transition to next generation broadband, this book aims to provide valuable insights on the deployment, adoption and usage of broadband services, regardless of the specific technologies used to provide services to users. > > For more information on this book, please contact Jyoti Choudrie (jyotichoudrie(a)gmail.com) or Catherine Middleton (catherine.middleton(a)ryerson.ca) > > ------------------------------ > > Message: 5 > Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2012 06:26:06 -0700 > From: "Calderaro, Andrea" <Andrea.Calderaro(a)EUI.eu> > To: AoIR <air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org> > Subject: [Air-L] Reminder: CFP- Policy and Internet Special issue on > 'Online Collective Action and Policy Change' > Message-ID: <F17179C7-8C0B-499C-9482-1BDBC68717FA(a)EUI.eu> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > > ** Apologies for cross-posting** > > DEADLINE APPROACHING > > Call for Papers > 'Policy and Internet' Special Issue on "Online Collective Action and Policy Change" > > Guest Editors > > Andrea Calderaro (PhD, European University Institute) > Anastasia Kavada (PhD, University of Westminster) > > Policy and Internet, the first major peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary journal investigating the impact of the internet on public policy, is inviting submissions for a special issue on 'Online Collective Action and Policy Change', to be published in January 2013 (paper deadline: 31 March 2012). The journal is edited by the Oxford Internet Institute (University of Oxford) for the Policy Studies Organization (PSO). Please find more information at: http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/news/?id=595 > > The Internet has created a new interface between collective action and policy making: it opens new channels for social coordination and mobilisation, and it offers multiple platforms from where to influence public opinion and policy makers. Reminder: CFP- Policy and Internet Special issue on 'Online Collective Action and Policy Change'
by Calderaro, Andrea 15 Mar '12

15 Mar '12

** Apologies for cross-posting** DEADLINE APPROACHING Call for Papers 'Policy and Internet' Special Issue on "Online Collective Action and Policy Change" Guest Editors Andrea Calderaro (PhD, European University Institute) Anastasia Kavada (PhD, University of Westminster) Policy and Internet, the first major peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary journal investigating the impact of the internet on public policy, is inviting submissions for a special issue on 'Online Collective Action and Policy Change', to be published in January 2013 (paper deadline: 31 March 2012). The journal is edited by the Oxford Internet Institute (University of Oxford) for the Policy Studies Organization (PSO). Please find more information at: http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/news/?id=595 The Internet has created a new interface between collective action and policy making: it opens new channels for social coordination and mobilisation, and it offers multiple platforms from where to influence public opinion and policy makers. The recent wave of protests that has swept authoritarian regimes like Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, but also western liberal democracies like Greece, Spain, and the UK, offers new empirical evidence of the impact that online interactions and information exchange can have on policy making. In addition to these recent instances of contentious politics, advocacy and grassroots groups are increasingly using online technologies to empower local communities and direct change in the policies that most affect them. And issues at the heart of online governance, like Internet regulation, are motivating many collective efforts directed to shaping file-sharing policies, free software, or digital communication rights. This special issue calls for academic papers reporting novel empirical research on how online collective action drives policy change, in any of its ramifications. This includes topics such as: - The coordination of protests and mobilisations using online technologies, and their impact on public opinion and policy making. - The mechanisms through which online collective action grows and diffuses, and how or when they trigger a policy reaction. - The impact of online activity on issue salience, and the responsiveness of policy makers. - The interplay between online collective action and the offline policy cycle, or how policy makers deal with new sources of instability and disruption. This list of topics is not exhaustive, and other questions related to online collective action and its impact on policy making will be considered. Please contact the guest editors Andrea Calderaro (andrea.calderaro(a)eui.eu) and Anastasia Kavada (a.kavada(a)westminster.ac.uk) if you have any queries about how your paper might fit in the issue. Paper Submissions The online submission deadline for papers is 31 March 2012. Please indicate in the cover letter that the paper is intended for the special issue 'Online Collective Action and Policy Change'. Authors are advised to consult the journal's Guide for Authors before submitting their paper. _________________________________ Andrea Calderaro, PhD | European University Institute Academic Assistant | Center for Media Pluralism and Freedom Information | European University Institute Project Coordinator "New Media in Transition Democracy" | Department of Media and Communication - University of Oslo Guest Editor "Policy and Internet" special issue: "Online Collective Action and Policy Change" - CfP at: http://t.co/YWe2a7ya ----------------------------------------------- Personal Page: www.eui.eu/Personal/Researchers/calderaro/ Twitter: @andreacalderaro The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. CFP: broadband book and conference
by Catherine Middleton 15 Mar '12

15 Mar '12

Connecting the Future: Rural Broadband Technology, Policy and Impact, Toronto, September 19-20, 2012. Abstracts due by April 15th, 2012. http://business.queensu.ca/centres/monieson/economic_revitalization/Broadba… Call for Chapters: Management of Broadband Technology Innovation. Full chapters due by April 15, 2012. http://www.broadbandresearch.ca/ourresearch/CFP_broadband_book.pdf Broadband network connectivity is becoming an essential service. It is widely understood that the deployment and effective use of broadband networks can result in social and economic benefits, and for this reason, governments are encouraging the development of ‘next generation’ (very high speed) broadband networks. For more information on this book, please contact Jyoti Choudrie (jyotichoudrie(a)gmail.com) or Catherine Middleton (catherine.middleton(a)ryerson.ca)

NEW BOOK: Net Work: Ethics and Values in Web Design by Helen Kennedy
by Helen Kennedy 15 Mar '12

15 Mar '12

Net Work: Ethics and Values in Web Design by Helen Kennedy ‘With rigor and heart, Helen Kennedy demonstrates that ethical decisions are interwoven into the labour of web design, making the work meaningful for designers and the internet more accessible for users. She successfully balances a critical yet hopeful tone in theorizing cultural labour in the new economy.’ Vicki Mayer, Tulane University, USA. 'Beautifully written and carefully researched, this is an important book that makes a major contribution to thinking about labour, ethics and new media.' Rosalind Gill, King's College, London, UK. 'Helen Kennedy has painted a detailed moral and emotional landscape of the web and offers an alternative way of reading the hope and utopianism associated with the Internet in the 1990s. For web professionals, her book inspires some reflective thinking about why we were drawn to our industry and the ways we work in it. For students and teachers of digital media, it provides a much needed philosophical framework for web industry practice.' Linda Leung, University of Technology Sydney, Australia Despite growing interest in the cultural industries and the iconic status of the web designer, surprisingly little academic attention has been paid to the work of people who make websites. This book fills that gap, offering a detailed analysis of the work practices and working conditions of web designers. Helen Kennedy draws on over a decade of work and research within the web design industry to argue that web design is suffused with ethical inflections, which originate both in Tim Berners-Lee's ideal vision of the web as an open, accessible and universal medium, and in the ethics and values which individual web designers bring to their work. Rich in empirical detail, Net Work is a must read for people interested in digital media and the cultural industries, and for those who want to work in these fields. CONTENTS: PART I: FRAMING WEB DESIGN Chapter 1: A Book About Web Design Chapter 2: A Framework for Thinking About Web Design Chapter 3: A Brief History of Web Design PART II: ETHICS AND VALUES IN WEB DESIGN Chapter 4: Web Standards and the Self-Regulation of Web Designers Chapter 5: The Fragile Ethics of Web Accessibility Chapter 6: Going the Extra Mile: Web Accessibility for People with Intellectual Disabilities Chapter 7: Free Labour: Web Designers' Ethical Responses to User Activity Chapter 8: Narrow Fame: Micro-Celebrities Making Good of Conditions Not of Their Own Making Chapter 9: Hope and the Ethical Future of Web Design HELEN KENNEDY is Senior Lecturer in New Media in the Institute of Communication Studies at the University of Leeds, UK. She has contributed articles to journals such as Media, Culture and Society, Ephemera, The Information Society, Information Communication and Society and New Media and Society, and is co-editor of Cyborg Lives? Women's Technobiographies (2001). She also teaches web design and occasionally designs websites.

(Reminder) Call for Conference Papers: "IPP2012: Big Data, Big Challenges?"
by David Sutcliffe 14 Mar '12

14 Mar '12

Just a reminder that the paper call for the Oxford Conference on Big Data (Sept 2012) closes this week (posters still have another month)... Best wishes, David ** Call for papers ** ** Internet, Politics, Policy 2012: Big Data, Big Challenges? ** ** 20-21 September 2012, University of Oxford ** ** http://microsites.oii.ox.ac.uk/ipp2012 ** ** Rationale ** Recent years have seen an increasing buzz around how 'Big Data' can uncover patterns of human behaviour and help predict social trends. Most social activities today leave digital imprints that can be collected and stored in the form of large datasets of transactional data. These data are already being used to prevent epidemics or combat fraud and crime, but the research potential of these data is still underexploited. The impact of Big Data goes beyond academic research: the behavioural insights gained from transactional information can also be used to drive evidence-based policy making and 'nudge' political behaviour. However, the technical skills necessary to analyse large datasets often prevent social scientists from exploiting its potential. Much detail is also lost in the analysis of Big Data, which emphasises aggregated patterns over mechanisms operating at the individual level and lacks the demographic information of survey data, for example. This conference calls for papers that explore the new research frontiers opened up by Big Data as well as its limitations. We are looking for research that uses large datasets to inform old debates in political science, and papers that develop innovative methodological tools (from experiments, to crowd-sourcing, to online ethnography) to overcome the omissions of big datasets. The Internet, Politics, Policy 2012 conference aims to serve as a forum to encourage discussion across disciplinary boundaries on how to exploit Big Data to inform policy debates and advance social science research. ** Programme ** The conference aims to attract papers from a range of disciplines analysing Big Data or developing approaches that dig into the mechanisms that large datasets do not consider. Panels will be organised in twin tracks: - Papers in the Politics track will explore the insights that large datasets and complementary methodological tools offer in the analysis of political behaviour, including - but not limited to - mobilisations, collective action, or public opinion formation; - Papers in the Policy track will look at how behavioural insights gained from Big Data analysis, and from experiments in online settings, can inform policy debates and shape policy making, including e-health, on-line education, cybercrime, security and privacy. These two areas are intertwined, and will be merged in plenary sessions, investigating the intersection of policy and politics in the Big Data era. ** Keynotes ** - Duncan Watts, Principal Research Scientist, Yahoo! Research - Second keynote pending confirmation ** Submissions ** We welcome papers reporting on innovative research exploiting large datasets or applying novel methodological tools aimed to overcome the limitations of Big Data. We particularly welcome papers that report empirical results and employ analytical approaches that would not have been possible without access to digital information. Perspectives from any academic discipline are welcomed, particularly: political science, economics, law, sociology, information science, communications, philosophy, computer science, psychology, management, geography and medicine. Paper proposals: Proposals should include a title and a 1000 word abstract specifying the research question, describing the methods and data used, and summarising the main findings. Abstracts will be peer reviewed, and the authors of accepted proposals are expected to submit full papers prior to the conference. Paper submissions will be considered for a Best Paper Award of 300 GBP (sponsored by the journal Policy and Internet). The prize will be awarded at the closing session of the conference. As the paper is intended to be published in a future issue of the journal, authors should indicate whether they would like their paper to be considered for the prize. Poster proposals: Posters should summarise in a visually engaging manner the purpose, methods and results of an original piece of research. All accepted submissions will be considered for a Best Poster Award of 300 GBP (sponsored by Google). The prize will be awarded at the closing session of the conference. Paper and poster proposals should be submitted using the online form at http://microsites.oii.ox.ac.uk/ipp2012/submissions Travel Bursaries: We will support a limited number of competitive bursaries to contribute to the cost of attendance for doctoral students and recent postdocs (doctorate finished 2011). Preference will be given to paper or poster presenters. Please indicate in your submission if you would like to be considered for such a bursary. ** Deadlines ** Abstract deadline: 15 March 2012 Decision on abstracts: 15 April 2012 Poster deadline: 15 April 2012 Decision on posters: 15 May 2012 Full paper submission: 15 August 2012 Conference correspondence can be sent to: ipp2012(a)oii.ox.ac.uk Best wishes, Internet, Politics, Policy 2010 http://microsites.oii.ox.ac.uk/ipp2012 Contact: ipp2012(a)oii.ox.ac.uk Twitter: #ipp2012 Professor Helen Margetts (Oxford Internet Institute) Dr Sandra Gonzalez-Bailon (Oxford Internet Institute) David Sutcliffe (Oxford Internet Institute)
