Texas A&M University seeks to hire at the level of Associate or Full Professor a dynamic scholar with an established record in digital humanities research and academic leadership to participate--as Associate Director--in establishing an interdisciplinary Institute for Digital Humanities, Media, and Culture. The Institute has been designated one of eight Texas A&M Initial University Multidisciplinary Research Initiatives (and thus is the recipient of substantial start-up funding). The new appointment would be hired with tenure in an academic department that is closely associated with his or her main research direction, including Texas A&M’s innovative Visualization Department. Possible research areas include but are not limited to Visualization (including information and scientific visualization), Computer Science, Anthropology, Architecture, Digital Rhetorics, Ethics, or Philosophy. The Institute for Digital Humanities, Media, and Culture supports interdisciplinary scholarly and creative work that broadly explores the relationship between computing technologies and culture. Candidates may be trained in disciplines related to visual culture and media literacy, broadly construed, and globalization and internationalization of culture. Furthermore, we are interested in scholars who bridge the gap between critical and creative studies as well as those who have an interest in developing grant and funded projects. The appointee’s responsibilities include working with the Director to initiate and develop an internal research program and facilities (including a new digital humanities laboratory), actively engaging external partners (including other research programs, educational institutions, and leaders in the technology industries, securing supplemental funding from such external agencies as NEH, Mellon, ACLS, and NEA), and teaching. The successful applicant will have an outstanding scholarly or artistic record in digital humanities, digital media, and/or digital culture, including substantial experience in interdisciplinary, collaborative research and in obtaining and administering grant funding. Classroom teaching expected outside the Institute for Digital Humanities, Media, and Culture, within the successful candidate’s home department. The book will have around 30 chapters written by scholars from the UK, USA and Europe, with many illustrations. It focuses specifically on contemporary and popular manifestations of the paranormal, rather than the Spiritualism of the Victorian era, or Theosophy, for example, which has been covered elsewhere. The project is already well established, with many chapters completed or at the editing stage. However, we are looking for contributions of 6,000 words on further material that we would like to include. Chapters would require a short introduction to the field you are writing in/of the research context, followed by your case study and 2-3 suggested readings to follow up. The date for submission for these later chapters would be June 1st. However, we would need an abstract sent to us by February 14th please, for us to consider and then to go forward with your idea. It does not have an Object but a territory. For that very reason it has a past form, a present form and, perhaps, a form to come” (Deleuze and Guattari What is Philosophy? 1996: 101) Knowledges are generated by located cultural formations embedded in particular historical trajectories. Our themed edition of Angelaki builds on the suggestion ‘the concept is not object but territory’ through positing material-cultural geographies of masculinity as the sites in which thought is created. Such forms of thought are, we argue, necessarily gendered and the products of gendered cultures. We are specifically interested in ways in which lived cultures of masculinity might be read as offering means for understanding men and masculinities articulated across political formations, aesthetic practices and institutionalized systems of thought. Three specific disciplinary axes of analysis are suggested through which to explore these trajectories: performance studies, continental philosophy (especially Deleuze and Guattari’s work), and critical race theory. As editors, we are interested in contributions that consider cultural formations ranging from local performance spaces and working environments to global demarcations of masculinised territories, such as the nation-state or the “Western” hemisphere. We are interested in the ways in which different social boundaries and cultural economies are made and remade through articulations of masculinity and the extent to which such re-mappings can (or can not) be read as constitutive of thought. An imperative driving this project is an interest in how cultural geography and masculinity studies might offer conceptual resources for scholars working in continental philosophy. Specifically, we are interested in how the examination of political and aesthetic terrains involved in the formation of masculinities, hegemonic or otherwise, might be mapped onto the field of continental philosophy. As such, the editors encourage a focus on the political implications and/or methodological consequences of poststructuralist approaches to masculinities, especially perspectives on the possible limitations of continental philosophical thinkers within more applied disciplines or fields of inquiry. To this end, articles utilizing models of thought generated within masculinity studies to reconsider or critique Deleuze and Guattari’s thought, and/or the work of other continental philosophers, are welcomed. We also invite contributions that draw on continental philosophy to interrogate literature from the field of masculinity studies. Contributors are invited to explore specific geographies of masculinities as thought-machines. As suggested above, there are three areas in which we would like to locate contributions: · Cultures of performance, music, dance and visual arts, including (ethico)aesthetic approaches to masculinities within artworks or performances, but also extending to the gendered dynamics of artistic production, consumption and/or reception. · Cultures of scholarship, including the institutional politics of masculinity studies, the impact of masculinities on research practices and publishing, and the take-up of psychoanalysis and post-structuralism within gender studies. We welcome contributions that explore the gender dynamics of knowledge production within specific university environments and/or in the context of global knowledge production. This work might also develop Alice Jardine's response to Deleuze and Guattari in the context of gendered research environments. · Masculinity and geographies of race, including the formation of masculine identities, stereotypes and spaces along racial and ethnic lines, or within racially "marked" diasporic communities. This could also include considerations of masculinities within anthropology, migration studies and critical race studies. Contributors are invited to consider the constitutive relationship to femininity performed through the masculinities under consideration. About the editors: Dr. Anna Hickey-Moody is a lecturer in Gender and Cultural Studies at Sydney University. Anna has a background in performance studies, youth studies and education. She is co-author of Masculinity beyond the Metropolis (Palgrave, 2006), co-editor of Deleuzian Encounters (Palgrave, 2007) and author of Unimaginable Bodies (Sense, 2009). Timothy Laurie is a PhD Candidate in Gender and Cultural Studies at Sydney University. He has published on Gilles Deleuze and music criticism, and has a forthcoming book-chapter on Deleuze and Afrofuturism. As Bruner (1991) pointed out some two decades ago, this is not all too surprising, given the ubiquity of quips such as ‘a trip to remember’ or ‘a trip of a lifetime’ within the marketing material that accompanies the tourism industry. What is surprising, however, is that this association has, on the whole, remained relatively underexplored and unchallenged, with little in the way of a balanced corpus of academic literature surrounding these themes. Instead, much of the literature remains focused upon describing and categorising tourism and travel experiences from a supply-side perspective and taxonomising travellers on the basis of their level of involvement and interest. Occasional forays into theory have generated some important milestone contributions but there have been few new attempts at a rigorous re-theorisation of the issues. Thus, while threads of research have emerged that take ‘transformation’ seriously, these have tended to focus upon particular niches – study abroad, backpacking, volunteer tourism, nature-based recreation and so forth. The opportunity to explore the general socio-cultural phenomenon of transformation through travel has thus far been missed (Lean 2009). This Call for Papers aims to attend to this lacuna in the literature, reflecting upon what it means to transform through travel in a modern, mobile world. We seek contributions from a multidisciplinary cohort (including, but certainly not limited to: geographers, sociologists, cultural researchers, philosophers, anthropologists, visual researchers, historians and literary scholars), who are researching and considering notions of experience, mobility and affect, all of which seem central to the idea of ‘transformation’. As a catalyst for ideas, but in no way a restrictive list, possible themes might include: · Travel as an agent of personal, social and/or cultural transformation, in both modern and historical contexts; · Representations of transformation through travel in movies, literature, art, performances, photographs, family histories…; · Travel and transformation from non-western perspectives; · Transformation through non-physical travel – imaginary, virtual, communicative, …; · The role of the senses in transformation – sight, sound, taste, smell and touch; · Transformation through travel in relation to gender, race, class, …; · Non-transformative travel and critiques of the promotion of travel as an agent of transformation; The volume seeks contributions from a variety of physical and non-physical travel perspectives (such as migration, refugees, military service, virtual travel, imaginative travel, pilgrimage and so forth). Apologies for cross posting Call for papers Open panel: Childhood, Values and Digitisation Organised for the 4S/EASST Meeting, to be held at the Copenhagen Business School, Frederiksberg, Denmark, October 17-20, 2012. Description Within the context of a digitising society, numerous domains of children's lives are inundated with digital technologies, connecting children to systems in various ways. These include, amongst others, identity management systems developed by governments and used by (health) care professionals to predict children at 'risk', social media environments developed by corporations to facilitate 'profitable' relationships with children, and electronic learning environments developed for educational settings to enhance learning and communication processes. There are particular values in play within the context of digital technologies and childhood that can be distinguished. On one hand, there are concerns for and about the vulnerability and innocence of children, with particular attention paid to protecting and caring for children. On the other hand, childhood is also connected to increasing the participatory potential or agency of children, in which they are considered as autonomous social actors, as consumers, with digital skills, whose competencies are in formation. Increasingly, the tensions between these two sets of values focused on childhood, roughly protection/care on the one side and autonomy on the other, are not merely demarcated and illustrated by the use of different digital technologies omnipresent in children's lives. Instead, as social and constructivist studies of science and technology suggest, these values are being configured and reconfigured within and by these socio-technical systems. Values can be 'displaced' as the result of different conflicts, as can the initial intentions and interests of and for these values based on their translation into different systems. For this panel, we invite papers that explore issues connected to childhood, values, and digitisation based on empirical work in these areas. 2012 Summer Research Institute for the Science of Socio-Technical Systems July 29 – August 2, 2011 – The Bishop’s Lodge Resort, Santa Fe, NM, USA Application: Screening begins March 9th, 2012 Eligibility: Advanced doctoral students, post-doctoral scholars and pre-tenure faculty at US-based institutions Notification: Early April 2012 Cost: reasonable expenses will be covered for all accepted participants Background A science of socio-technical systems is emerging from research in the fields of CSCW, social computing, social informatics, the sociology of computing, HCI, information systems and other related intellectual communities. The Consortium for the Science of Socio-Technical Systems (CSST, see www.sociotech.net) is an organization devoted to advancing research on socio-technical systems. Building on the success of the three previous Summer Research Institutes, the CSST will, with generous support by the National Science Foundation, again be hosting a summer research institute for advanced doctoral students, post-doctoral scholars, and pre-tenure faculty. A primary goal of the institute is to build a new cohort of faculty and graduate students who are interested in research on the design and interplay of the social and technical that spans levels of individuals, groups, organizations, and larger communities. Examples of this kind of work include research on: * new forms of organizing (e.g., virtual organizations, massive online activities) * social computing (e.g., online communities, online social networks); * distributed work (e.g., collaboratories, virtual teams); * technology and work in context (e.g. healthcare informatics, IT and journalism, eScience) * emerging technologies (e.g., recommender systems, prediction markets); * novel forms of production (e.g., open source software, Wikipedia); * new forms of expression and entertainment (e.g., blogs, wikis, massively multiplayer online role-playing games); * information and communication technologies for developing regions (e.g., cell phone-based applications to assist economic development, infrastructure development for local economic action). Institute mentors The institute has assembled a faculty of distinguished scholars in the domain of socio-technical systems to serve as mentors. Provide encouragement and support for the selection of socio-technical systems research topics. * Illustrate the interrelationship and diversity of the field of socio-technical systems research. How the institute will be conducted The institute will be conducted as a residential program at the Bishop’s Lodge Resort outside Santa Fe, New Mexico (http://www.bishopslodge.com/) with a combination of small group sessions devoted to providing feedback onparticipant's research and larger group sessions consisting of panels and presentations led by the Institute's mentors. These sessions will cover research topics such as core principles and viable research methods and also career development, how to obtain funding, and publication strategies. Timeeach afternoon will be reserved for informal recreational activities. All reasonable, pre-paid costs of participation, including travel, lodging, and meals are covered by support from NSF. 2012 AoIR Dissertation Award (submissions due March 1)

The Association of Internet Researchers is pleased to announce a new award for best PhD dissertation in the area of internet-related research. To be eligible for the 2012 AoIR Dissertation Award, the dissertation must have been filed in the 2011 calendar year. In addition to winning a cash prize, the individual will also be invited to present their research in a session at Internet Research 13.0 at the University of Salford, October 18-21, 2012. Submissions should be sent in electronic form to Lori Kendall, loriken(a)illinois.edu by March 1, 2012. The winner of the award will be announced in late spring.

Tablet Computer Ethnographies

All, Can anyone recommend to me to high quality ethnographies of people using tablet computers? I've searched the list archives and we recently veered close to this subject in a thread discussing "Writing and iPads" but not close enough. In that thread, Shane Tilton shared a link to a poster about an ethnographic study of tablet usage on campus buses (https://www.ideals.illinois.edu/bitstream/handle/2142/25041/hahn_rapid.pdf?…) I've also found references to an Australian study (http://works.bepress.com/jeff_brand/18/) but nearly all of the material I've found so far focuses on the use of tablets as tools to conduct ethnographies. So are there any studies out there I'm missing? Does anyone have anything in the pipeline? (For the curious and those who need more context, this relates to a study for which I've previously asked for help related to mobile devices and web surveys. I'm presenting a paper in a few months showing that in this one study respondents to a web-based survey who used mobile phones provided lower-quality responses compared to iPad and computer users. My methods don't allow me to say *why* this happened but I'd like to conjecture intelligently and offer some likely possibilities hence my desire to know how people use tablets. My hunch is that this relates to screen size and environmental factors.) Kevin
