I just wanted to thank everyone who wrote in response to my questions about ensuring privacy in online research. I've decided to limit interviews to Skype messenger, using a Skype account only used for interviews on a password protected computer to which only I have access. I will delete my conversation history following every interview. Thanks again! ********************************** Special Track Science 2.0 (#STS20) ********************************** 5 September 2012 Graz, Austria http://i-know.tugraz.at/i-science/science-2-0 Science 2.0 deals with the involvement of the web in science. It spans from the utilization of Web 2.0 tools and technologies in research to a more open and sharing approach to science. Some definitions of Science 2.0 even include notions of a methodological change due to the abundance of data, and the nature of the socio-technical systems on the web. For this special track, we would like to address four issues in Science 2.0 that have proven both promising and challenging at the same time: 1. The management of scientific data, both primary and secondary data (such as publication metadata, and other scientific content on the web) as a precondition for Science 2.0. 2. The recommendation of people and resources as a consequential next step in an exponentially growing scientific environment. 3. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of science based on data from scholarly communication on the web. 4. The change in scientific practices due to the involvement of Science 2.0 tools and technologies in the research process and the effects this has on science itself. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Definition of data schemes and interoperability formats * Semantic Web standards for Science 2.0 * Social mining and metadata extraction in academic resources * Metadata quality and quality assessment * Design and architecture of data sharing facilities * Systems design accounting for standardized data sets * Applications for recommendation in science * Specific challenges for recommendation in science * Information retrieval in academic papers * Recommendation algorithms and quality indicators * Changes in scientific practices due to Web 2.0 * Methodological issues and interdisciplinarity in Science 2.0 * Opportunities and threats for researchers and research organizations * Applications in and for Science 2.0 * Awareness-support for Science 2.0 activities * Crowd-sourcing in science * Robust methods for dealing with noisy crowd sourced data Important Dates --------------- 30 April 2012: Submission of full papers (8 pages) and demos (4 pages) 31 May 2012: Notification of acceptance 30 June 2012: Camera ready version (8 pages) 5 Sept.-7 Sept. 2012: i-KNOW 2012 Conference Submission Procedure -------------------- We are inviting research papers of up to 8 pages including references and an optional appendix. Hello all, I'm forwarding an email from a colleague on another list. He has a student that needs some help finding a tool that can do Twitter searches (please see below for specific needs). I know I've seen several recommendations come across this list in the past, so I'm hoping someone here can offer some suggestions. Thanks! He's looking for a program that will allow him to search Twitter on specific dates to see if specific topics were discussed. Ensuring privacy in online interviewing
by Jenni Whitmer 07 Mar '12

07 Mar '12

I'm in the midst of revising an IRB protocol for my dissertation. I will be interviewing fashion bloggers about their experiences with blogging and their thoughts on the relation between blogging and fashion media. The bloggers I will be interviewing are all public figures, to one degree or another, and I don't see the questions I'm asking as being very sensitive in nature. I planned to interview respondents using their choice of Skype or instant messaging service. The IRB reviewer asked me to clarify how I plan to ensure privacy and confidentiality over Skype and IM specifically because they are online. I'm a little unsure of what to say. I suppose I can't guarantee privacy 100% over a public network, but is the threat really much more notable than being overheard during a face to face or phone interview? I was wondering if anyone had any advice or could refer me to any articles that address this issue. Are there any IM programs I could use that might minimize threats to privacy? -- Jennifer Whitmer, MA Dept. of Sociology University of Nevada, Las Vegas Las Vegas, NV 89154-5033 phone: 440-429-5957

New Book Announcement: Stories and Social Media
by Page, Ruth E. (Dr.) 07 Mar '12

07 Mar '12

New Book Notification: [apologies for cross posting] I'm delighted to announce the recent publication of 'Stories and Social Media: Identities and Interaction' (Routledge, 2012), http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415889810/. Please see below for a brief description and Table of Contents. Best wishes Ruth Description: This book examines everyday stories of personal experience that are published online in contemporary forms of social media. Taking examples from discussion boards, blogs, social network sites, microblogging sites, wikis, collaborative and participatory storytelling projects, Ruth Page explores how new and existing narrative genres are being (re)shaped in different online contexts. The book shows how the characteristics of social media, which emphasize recency, interpersonal connection and mobile distribution, amplify or reverse different aspects of canonical storytelling. The new storytelling patterns which emerge provide a fresh perspective on some of the key concepts in narrative research: structure, evaluation and the location of speaker and audience in time and space. The online stories are profoundly social in nature, and perform important identity work for their tellers as they interact with their audiences - identities which range from celebrities in Twitter, cancer survivors in the blogosphere to creative writers convening storytelling projects or local histories. Stories and Social Media brings together the stories told in well-known sites like Facebook and lesser-known community archives, providing a landmark survey and critique of personal storytelling as it is being reworked online at the start of the 21st century. Contents: Preface 1: Introduction: Stories and Social Media in Context 2: Second Stories Told in Discussion Forums 3: Narratives of Illness and Personal Blogs 4: Storytelling Styles in Facebook Updates 5: Celebrity Practice: Stories told in Twitter 6: Narrative and Commentary in Collaborative Storytelling 7: Space and Identity in Stories on the Move 8: Fakes, Fictions and Facebook "Rape": Narrative Authenticity 9: Familiar, Reconfigured and Emergent Dimensions of Narrative Dr Ruth Page Room 1509, Attenborough Tower School of English University of Leicester Leicester LE1 7RH UK +44 (0)116 223 1286

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS
by Hakikur Rahman 07 Mar '12

07 Mar '12

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS Proposal Submission Deadline: April 01, 2012 Full Chapter Submission Deadline: July 01, 2012 Ethical Data Mining Applications for Socio-Economic Development A book edited by Dr. Hakikur Rahman and Dr. Isabel Ramos, University of Minho, Portugal To be published by IGI Global: <http://www.igi-global.com>http://www.igi-global.com (Call for the chapter: http://www.igi-global.com/authorseditors/authoreditorresources/callforbookc…) Introduction Data mining is the process of discovering significant, valuable and interesting structures and relationships in large and complex volumes of data, especially in data-enriched areas like finance, insurance, marketing, technology, science, engineering, research, environmental and biomedical sciences, and in many other socio-economic domains. In the socio-economic aspect of a society, data mining applications essentially act as effective instruments for providing support to health care facilities, electronics-based commerce, supermarket purchases, stock trades, insurance claims conducted on-line, or measuring socio-economic pattern of a society. This way, a wealth of information can be amassed about not only on clients´ habits and their preferences, but also about the behavior pattern, purchase pattern, sales pattern, stock pattern and even profit forecast. However, practitioners often seek personal information not directly from the participants themselves, but from other collected sources, and this may lead to unreliability about the source with privacy protection, and raises ethical concern. Social and ethical matters are nowadays concerns to the society, of which people are the only elements. Furthermore, in the days of technology innovations, computers are being manipulated with programs to act more like people, and eventually several social and ethical matters come into focus related to computer programming, or artificial intelligence. Hence, learning about ethical issues on data mining applications is an important area of research interest. Overall Objective of the Book The ethical conduct of research is becoming an important element of modern scientific research. In these days, computer science and its technological remnants touch nearly every aspect of human life, and computer scientists must conduct and report their research in an ethical manner. The book will provide an overview on ethical issues in research for development of ICTs, and socio-economic development aspects. This book will also collate scientific developments with ethical issues, develop theories in relation to researches with ethical impediments, examine potential ethical dilemmas in this discipline, synthesize experimental cases to develop models as success cases and discuss how ethical concerns may be addressed to tackle these situations. Finally, the book looks to make an in-depth study on other areas of ethical concern and future development of a common acceptable code for ethical computer science research. Target Audience As an emerging subject, the target audiences are expected to be from the scientists, researchers, and practitioners working in the field of data mining, data warehousing, database management and information systems technologies. Furthermore, the audience will include among various stakeholders, like academics, research institutes, and individuals those are interested in this field, and most of all among the huge audience in the public sector comprising government agencies, ministries, education institutions, health service providers, financial service providers, social service providers and other types of government, commercial and not-for-profit agencies. Recommended topics for chapters include, but are not limited to, the following: * primary data, methods and procedures to create compilations of accurate reporting with ethical issues; * primary data that are based on human observation to be treated for prompt recording and accurate presentation; * preservation of record for future use and intelligent decision making; * recording sufficient detail of data to preserve the record of factors that might turn out to be significant; * develop methods that minimizes doubt about the time of the occurrence or the time at which it was recorded; * data record that should be kept reasonably free from risk of damage or ethical concerns; * necessary research materials that should be made available to others who attempt to replicate similar research works; * creation, maintenance and preservation of large amount of data, content and record; * preserving the confidentiality of sensitive information about human subjects, if any, in the data record; and * preservation of research data for a reasonable number of years after the appearance of final reports or publications resulting from the research. Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before April 01, 2012, a 2-3 page proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by April 15, 2012 about the status of their proposals and sent case guidelines. Full cases are expected to be submitted by July 01, 2012. All submitted cases will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Publisher This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference), Medical Information Science Reference, and IGI Publishing imprints. For additional information regarding the publisher, please visit <http://www.igi-global.com>www.igi-global.com. This publication is anticipated to be released in 2013.
