For the second year, AoIR will award for the best book published in internet research. This award seeks to recognize the best work in our field, and highlight the breadth of work that is done relating to the social and cultural dimensions of networked media. We will accept nominations (self and other) for Best Internet Research-Related Book published during the calendar year of 2011. Edited collections are not eligible; the book must explore a single topic and be authored or co-authored as a single text. The books will be reviewed by three eminent scholars in the field. Three copies of the book being submitted for review should be sent to Steve Jones to arrive before March 1, 2012 at the following address: Prof. Steve Jones Department of Communication (m/c 132) University of Illinois at Chicago 1007 W. On the wave of the vibrant multidisciplinary debate which has been revitalized around McLuhan’s thought in the conferences, seminars and various events organized worldwide for the McLuhan centennial (1911‐2011), this journal aims to stimulate new reflections on the immense contribution of this author and promote innovative critical work crossing national and disciplinary boundaries. The purpose of The International Journal of McLuhan Studies is to cover a wide variety of disciplines including Media studies, Performing and Visual Arts, Linguistics, Literature, Intellectual and Cultural history, Social Sciences, Educational Studies and Anthropology. Under the scientific direction of Derrick de Kerckhove and Eric McLuhan, and combining a more traditional paper issue with a digital variant, The International Journal of McLuhan Studies aims at a hypertextual, interconnected and “open‐ended” critical discourse. Going a step beyond the mechanics-- I am interested in your research purpose, design, and the ways you addressed research ethics. Track Information Interest in virtual worlds has increased in the last years (For example: Wasko, Teigland, Leidner, and Jarvenpaa, 2011). These artificial environments, which emerged from the gaming and role-play world, have developed to serious applications suitable for various domain such as general business, traveling, teaching (Baker, Wentz, and Woods, 2009), and more. Inexpensive commodity-based products, such as computers and high-speed internet, help making sophisticated simulation technologies affordable and more accessible. Virtual Worlds are 3D, immersive graphical environments representing realistic or imaginary worlds. A "Real Virtual World" is defined as a combination of 3D – 3C: a three- dimensional world in which Communities of real people interact, creating Content, stuff and services, and producing real economic value through e-Commerce (Sivan, Bloomfield, and Gelissen, 2009). Simulations in a virtual world have a number of advantages, for example: the possibility to simulate expensive real-world resources, performing collaborative tasks without meeting physically, and training people in risky activities that would be dangerous in the real world. Moreover, the activities are committed in a "gaming" like interaction, which motivates people to perform even routine and annoying activities. The aim of this track is to examine the opportunities and challenges that such developments pose to organizations, and their potential impacts on competitive, organizational, and legal issues. This track will be of interest to researchers, students, educators, virtual world users, and anyone interested in the potential implications of virtual worlds to organizations, businesses, and individuals. Track Submission Instructions Researchers are cordially invited to submit their full research papers (7-12 pages), research-in-progress papers or extended abstracts (3-7 pages). We collaborate closely with Design Factory living labs at Aalto University in Helsinki and at Tongji University in Shanghai. -- Research at Swinburne Design Our research takes place through the National Institute for Design Research with research in neuroaffective design, cultures-based innovation, strategic design, and design education. We have 25 tenured academics: 10 senior researchers and 15 early career researchers as well as 20 doctoral research fellows. Our research focuses on theory and practice of industrial design, communication design and strategic design, along with design history and management. We also engage in multi-disciplinary research involving collaboration with colleagues in such diverse fields as business, information communication technology, and psychology. In 2008, Swinburne made the strategic decision to focus on traditional, empirical research methods and outcomes with publication as the standard measure of research quality. Design research at Swinburne provides business, industry and government with empirical research for innovation and development, creating strategic opportunities for manufacturing through research in the cognitive components of artefacts, neurological measures of aesthetic response, and understanding of visual recognition and affective processing. Our researchers develop new and profitable business models by successfully capitalising on such new fields as augmented reality and social media. Swinburne works with Delft University of Technology, Cambridge University and Vienna University in Project UMA, a global research program in neuroaffective design funded by the Dutch National Science Fund with a 1,500,000 Euro grant, the largest grant ever awarded for a pure research project in design. Swinburne has also hosted highly influential conferences on strategic design, design thinking, participatory innovation and cultures-based innovation, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Victorian Endowment for Science, Knowledge, and Innovation, Design Victoria (VESKI), and the Victorian state government. -- Design and Research with Impact Professors at Swinburne Design influence business, industry, and government through publications, invitations to speak at state, national, and global forums, and advisory roles for state and federal government. Hi Everyone, I know this is a topic that comes up a lot, but I'm ashamed to say I haven't been as good as I should be in terms of carefully following discussions about this topic. I'm now teaching a course that is all about becoming a teacher of statistics, and my co-instructor and I would like to discuss alternatives to the traditional textbook. We were hoping to share some readings or web material with students that might give them some good ideas about the issues to consider when adopting electronic textbooks. Do you know of particularly good articles we might share with our students, or any websites or even blogs that might debate the pros and cons of e-books? I am also doing my own searching, but if you have particular references you are fond of, I'd love to hear about them. Thank you for your time and for any suggestions you might have!
