Reminder: CFP Articulating Alternatives: agents, spaces and communication in/of a time of crisis
by Eleftheria L. 12 Mar '12

12 Mar '12

*CFP: Articulating alternatives: agents, spaces and communication in/of a time of crisis* *A workshop for new scholars hosted by the Centre for the Study of Global Media and Democracy, Goldsmiths, University of London, May 3rd, 2012.* This is a workshop which addresses a series of issues around the mediation of political life in a time of crisis. The last couple of decades have witnessed the intensification of the neoliberal logic, culminating in a profound crisis of capitalism. This has been accompanied by the widespread de-legitimisation of political institutions as citizens lose trust in the political process and confidence in the capacity of political elites to protect their interests. Concomitantly, recent years have seen the emergence of a myriad of actors (from indigenous people’s movements to alter-globalisation movements to current mobilisations like the Arab Spring and the Occupy movement), which challenge the neoliberal hegemony and seek to construct alternatives. Such actors are engaged in various forms of knowledge production oriented towards the development of critiques of the current system as well as the elaboration of alternative forms of economic, social, and political organisation. In the workshop, we wish to explore some of the complexities of the relationship between mediated communication and politics in a time of crisis. The intensive mobilisation of citizens around the world raises a number of questions in relation to how agents of transformation are constructing political vernaculars and actions at different scales and across different sites, both physical and virtual. The notion of a politics of crisis is set as a framework for the exploration of the agencies, spaces and communication practices of counter-capitalist voices. Pertinent here is the addressing of the structures of both the nation-state and global economic actors where the use of digital communication channels ranges from information-spreading to organisation and mobilisation. Many recent protests have been distinctly invested in particular localities (squares, streets), but appear to also express a sense of globality (evident for example in the argued global reach of the Occupy movement). New communication technologies appear to be offering unprecedented opportunities for the dissemination and elaboration of ideas, potentially playing a significant role in social processes of knowledge production and the articulation of alternatives. At the same time, conventional media are arguably in a state of crisis, arising from tendencies of commercialisation and concentration of ownership. As the media lose the confidence of their publics and thus their privileged epistemic status, questions are raised about their capacity to foster democratic public spheres. We are interested in addressing questions in relation to the discursive construction of alternatives, the agents involved in these processes, the spaces that are being opened up for articulation and action, as well as the modes of politics which characterise the current time of crisis. The themes we wish to explore include: - *Agents*. Are there new actors emerging in the context of political, economic and social crises? What form do such actors take, and what kinds of politics do they engage in? What role do conventional media as well as new information and communication technologies play in the emergence and organisation of such actors? How might media contribute to the elaboration of alternatives and the construction of transnational solidarity across geopolitical boundaries? - *Spaces*. How do the geography and spatiality of politics impact on the perspectives and claims arising in resistance to capitalism? What spatialities and scales are enacted through current modes of political praxis and forms of communication? What is the ‘place of place’ in contemporary political practices and discourses, and how does this relate to the ‘national’, ‘transnational’ or ‘global’? What role do media play in the politics of place and scale? Where does the matter of politics exhibit itself both online and offline? - *Communication*. How can we conceptualise the relationship between media and citizenship in the current climate of crisis? What role do the media play in the communication of a politics of crisis? How might media be implicated in the continued subalternisation, exclusion or incorporation of alternative/emergent knowledges and practices? Can the mainstream media be reformed to resume their (idealised?) democratic function as the guarantors of an open democratic public sphere? Or should we instead entrust our hopes to the burgeoning field of social and citizens’ media? In order to facilitate in-depth discussion and collective knowledge production, the workshop will be restricted to a limited number of participants. We welcome submissions of original work from early-career researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds including (but not limited to): media and communications, sociology, politics, anthropology, cultural studies, geography, and information studies. Interested participants should submit a 250 word abstract and brief biography *by March 15th*, 2012 to Eleftheria Lekakis (e.lekakis(a)gold.ac.uk) and Hilde C. Stephansen (h.stephansen(a)gold.ac.uk) The authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by March 22nd, 2012 and are invited to submit working papers of between 1500-3000 words in advance of the workshop. -- **Research Fellow Centre for the Study of Global Media and Democracy Department of Media and Communications Goldsmiths College, University of London New Cross, London, SE14 6NW United Kingdom

4S/EASST Open Panel CFP: Due March 18
by Ingrid Erickson 12 Mar '12

12 Mar '12

**Apologies for any duplication** CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Reminder of our CFP for panelists at the upcoming 4S/EASST conference in Copenhagen, October 17-20, 2012 http://4sonline.org/meeting SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 18 March 2012 Track D: ICT, SOCIAL COMPUTING, HACKING, USERS STUDIES Temporal practices and socio-digital organizing Organized by Ingrid Erickson, Cornell University Steve Sawyer, Syracuse University New forms and uses of information and communication technologies (ICT), changes in the ways people organize work, the ever-broadening array of living and family arrangements, and increasing mobility are all displacing traditional temporal markers within our personal and professional lives. These blurring lines occasion new possibilities in how we design tools, systems and policies to uphold or diminish these boundaries. Punditry on the implications of these changes is rampant: it ranges from certain dystopias to breathless utopias. Much of this recent discourse weighs issues of professional identity and temporal accessibility against values of personal agency and familial fidelity. Evidence about the patterns and implications of these temporal changes is limited, hard to synthesize, and difficult to generalize. We aim to begin redressing the disparity between imagined (espoused) and enacted (empirical) realities regarding the emergence of new forms of digitally-enabled work and living by assembling papers and authors whose work focuses on questions such as: How do people legitimate daily temporal practices? How do people appropriate ICT for use in managing their temporal practices? And, how do people manage their work and non-work activities? These questions focus on insights into how people ‘use’ time, how they negotiate the interplay of internalized social identities and their performance measures and the roles of ICT. In parallel, we seek to advance current theoretical positions regarding how are communities, government, employers, and other large-scale social institutions responding to temporal practices and enacted practices of sanctioning and legitimization of what people choose to “do?” In doing this we seek insight into the ways in which ICT are being domesticated and consumed as part of daily temporal practices. To do this we will solicit panelists who seek a conversation that interrogates the situation of blurred boundaries and temporal appropriation from a critical, multi-cultural, and socio-technical perspective. Hi all, thought someone would be ingerested in this. This small but ambitious program focuses on the extractive industries sector in Niger. It seeks to improve the capacity of selected civil society and media organizations to promote citizen participation in the drafting, approval and oversight of the implementation of laws and regulations governing natural resources management. Internews is seeking a multi-talented professional – someone with both traditional and social media journalism skills. The perfect candidate will be a trainer, an innovator, a subject specialist, and a passionate believer in the power of information to improve lives. The trainer is someone who can engage with journalists to provide specialist trainings focusing on issues of transparency, in the wider context of investigative and economic journalism. The trainer will also work with journalists to use mobile phones, cameras, and video, and to gather information from social media, blogs, community meetings and focus groups to monitor the natural resources industry. The selected trainer will work with local media (radio, print, social media) to mentor them to produce reports on natural resources management, laws and regulations; information spots will educate the public on specific issues (such as policy implementations, management of revenues, unions, child labor, community relations with mining companies and human rights); and investigative reports will provide detailed insight on issues such as mining code reform, the natural resource economy, and international supply chain transparency initiatives in the private sector. The innovator and social media skill set will be used to invite citizens to participate in monitoring the effects and the outcomes of the mining activities in their communities by using their mobile phones for citizen crowdsourcing. The incoming SMS (and possibly IVR for voice messages) will be then mapped to provide a spatial and temporal dimension to the information collected that will allow an understanding of which are the most affected communities and the variation of the phenomenon over time. The system will directly link the crowd to the local media that will be managing the incoming information received by the local population to follow up on stories on the ground and provide an overall picture of the actual outcomes of those activities on the local communities. An outreach strategy will advertise the system to local communities, while local media will manage it. See full job posting and how to apply here: https://sj.tbe.taleo.net/SJ11/ats/careers/requisition.jsp?org=INTERNEWS&cws… Please, fill free to get in contact with me if you have any question. AAA 2012 CfP: Beyond Work
by Sareeta Amrute 10 Mar '12

10 Mar '12

I am currently organizing a panel on life beyond/after/adjacent to work for the AAA Meeting that will be in San Francisco this year. Please see the call for papers below. Interested parties should submit an abstract to me no later than April 1, 2012 Thanks, Sareeta Amrute Assistant Professor of Anthropology University of Washington sareeta.amrute(a)gmail.com Beyond Work The concern with work and its expansiveness has in recent years come to occupy critical thought as work seems increasingly to have colonized free time, to look like entertainment, and blur the boundary between productive activity and rest. This panel asks, is it now time to re-imagine work, un-work, and areas of life beyond work? What kinds of new problematizations emerge at the intersection of working lives and lives beyond work? What are the dimensions through which work is understood, critiqued, and reappropriated? How does the value of work change when viewed from the perspective of the family, the marginalized, or the openly resistant? This panel will explore the emergence of alternatives to the expansion of work at the same time that it considers the consequences of valuing work as a measure of life. We will explore the after-life of work in its multiple dimensions, such as work and the biological rhythms of sleep, the relationship between working life and lively flour! ishing, the spaces, dreams, and times that exist outside of work economies, and the relationship between entertainment technologies and the social imaginaries of un-working. We will investigate how the spaces around, after, and before work are being reconceptualized in light of the failures of economic models of hard work. We will explore unorthodox forms of life after work, and ask how the organization of work is linked and de-coupled from the organization of life.
