Dear AoIRists - sent on behalf of our colleagues Fortunati and Bakardjieva - Call for papers: Special Issue of the European Journal of Cultural Studies ICTs and the Structural Transformation of the Private Sphere Edited by Maria Bakardjieva and Leopoldina Fortunati Dear Colleagues, The European Journal of Cultural Studies has expressed interest in publishing a special issue on the above topic. We invite scholars who conduct research in the area of new media in the private sphere and are interested in the questions we pose in our proposal to contribute original papers. Our goal is to have international diversity of contributions and hence experiences, sensitivities and conceptual perspectives. All submitted papers will undergo double-blind peer review. The deadline for submission of the completed papers is July 1, 2012. Please let us know if you have any questions. Feel free to send us your papers whenever you have them completed. Maria Bakardjieva (bakardji(a)ucalgary.ca)and Leopoldina Fortunati (fortunati.deluca(a)tin.it) ICTs and the Structural Transformation of the Private Sphere The objective of this special issue is to pick up the examination of ICTs in private spaces where domestication theory and research left off (Silverstone et al., 1992, Silverstone, 1994, Berker et al, 2006). The domestication perspective has enabled researchers to account for the active role of users in making sense of and appropriating new communication devices. The next step, in our view, is to ask what happens to the domesticators once the domesticated technologies have become deeply and intimately incorporated and inscribed into the spaces and rhythms of their daily lives. Do activities, relationships and roles in the household remain fundamentally the same, or may be some cultural and even civilizational changes take hold? Does the private sphere retain its basic structure, or does it undergo a significant re-configuration? Our main interest in this issue, then, would be to explore the transformations occurring in the private sphere as a result of the widespread use of ICTs. Sociological theory has considered the private sphere as typically exemplified by home life and family relationships as well as the very notions of the private that members of a culture share such as the proverbial bubble of personal space and the fuzzy, but nontheless persistent set of experiences individuals consider exclusively their own. Communication research, for its part, has shown how different media have systematically punctured and eroded the already porous boundary delineating the private sphere: from the startling ring of the telephone and the ensuing moral panic at the realization that any stranger could potentially disrupt the peace and quiet of the home to the intricate reconfiguration of the family?s routines and its members? relationships with the outside world that television brought about. The current generation of ITCs has carried that erosion further to the extent that the very idea of the private sphere has become problematic and almost untenable. The honoured abode of private life, the home, has been penetrated by gadgets and practices that decimate its introvert and intimate activities. At the same time fragments and instances of private life have broken out of the fragile boundaries of the home and have profusely populated the public world with the assistance of mobile devices. But if this is so, then how are some of the essential and defining functions of the private sphere being reconfigured and outsourced in the new media age? How, where and by whom is intimacy established as a central humanizing condition? How, where and by whom is the emotional nurturing of the human being and its moral education performed? How are human bodies and identities created and reproduced, if the primordial role of the family and the order of home space are being disrupted? Thus, the structural transformation of the private sphere poses also the question of the division of domestic labor and the personal and social position of women. Feminist research has already demonstrated that the appropriation and practices of use of ICTs have become a terrain of feminine initiative, creativity and social change. What has the influx of ICTs meant for women?s traditional responsibilities and the material and immaterial work they do in the household? Have women been able to appropriate new media technologies in ways consistent with their current role as mothers and ?handlers? of extended family networks? Or have they been swept away by the flood of new voices, enticements and imperatives channeled by ICTs? Have women been able to use ICTs for re-negotiating of their traditional roles and changing them? Have ICTs created ?more work for mother? (Cowan, 1983) and, if so, what kind of work is it? The private sphere, it can be argued, has been challenged by the market and, more broadly, by the economic system, on the one hand, and the public and semi-public world, on the other. It has been effectively taken over by interactions of commercial, ideological and sociable nature to the extent that its defining rituals ? the family dinner, the morning ?goodbye? kiss, the Sunday outing or game ? have been washed away by diversions that have drawn family members apart into their own individual enclaves of interest and sociability. Furthermore, the primary and most characteristic mode of communication among family members ? the immediate face-to-face and body-to-body encounter ? has been eclipsed by mediated exchanges such as the e-mail message or Skype call from one bedroom to another, or the texted announcement of coming back late tonight. The key function of the private sphere in reproducing and nurturing human bodies has been even more undervalued in a culture where disembodied activities and interactions have become the venerable norm. The economic system, for its part, has not stopped at radio jingles and television ads, but has brought the shopping mall into the heart of the living room and has injected commercial appeal into the most personal pursuits and intimate friendly interactions. It has reached for the place of the ultimate moral and cultural authority that shapes identity. Even more profoundly, it has devised techniques for extracting economic value from the affective labour of ICT users carried out within private spaces and times in an unprecedented volume and intensity (Terranova, 2004). This special issue will cast light on these developments through theoretically informed empirical studies that will cover a broad spectrum of issues and experiences related to the transformation of the private sphere across a variety of national contexts. We are hoping to be able to put together a diverse and yet conceptually consistent collection of contributions that trace the structural transformation of the private sphere in rich empirical detail and imaginatively consider its social and cultural implications. Thanks for the notes and resources shared. 1) There is something interesting in Hansen etc book on page 34 which speaks of vertices: "Often they represent people or social structures... At other times they represent content such as web pages, keyword tags or videos." The research I am actually doing involves more the keyword tag categories rather than people (whose identity as declared especially in YouTube is a bit fluid). Have you had experience in an analysis of social media network with content key word tag as vertices? 2) While it is possible to speak of difference between SNA and analysis of social network, is there a possiblity of convergence for them too. What would be the common elements in this convergence if at all it is possible? Thanks again. I have been using Martin Hawksey's Google spreadsheets to archive tweets. It only collects 1,500 at a time, but you could run several to collect all your tweets. PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS On 18 October 2012, there will be a limited number of pre-conference workshops and symposia that will provide participants with in-depth, hands-on and/or creative opportunities. We invite proposals for these pre-conference workshops. Local presenters are encouraged to propose workshops that will invite visiting researchers into their labs or studios or locales. Proposals should be no more than 1,000 words, and should clearly outline the purpose, methodology, structure, costs, equipment and minimal attendance required, as well as explaining its relevance to the conference as a whole. Proposals will be accepted if they demonstrate that the workshop will add significantly to the overall program in terms of thematic depth, hands on experience, or local opportunities for scholarly or artistic connections. On the author side, it takes splendid advantage of the freedom to reuse and repurpose open-access research articles. On the other side, it passes on that freedom to readers. By initially creating twenty one ‘living books about life’ in just seven months, the series represents an exciting new model for publishing, in a sustainable, low-cost, low-tech manner, many more such books in the future. These books can be freely shared with other academic and non-academic institutions and individuals. Nicholas Mirzoeff, Professor of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, commented: ‘This remarkable series transforms the humble Reader into a living form, while breaking down the conceptual barrier between the humanities and the sciences in a time when scholars and activists of all kinds have taken the understanding of life to be central. Brilliant in its simplicity and concept, this series is a leap towards an exciting new future’. One of the most important aspects of the Living Books About Life series is the impact it has had on the attitudes of the researchers taking part, changing their views on open access and raising awareness of issues around publishers’ licensing and copyright agreements. Many have become open access advocates themselves, keen to disseminate this model among their own scholarly and student communities. As Professor Erica Fudge of the University of Strathclyde and co-editor of the living book on Veterinary Science, put it, ‘I am now evangelical about making work publicly available, and am really encouraging colleagues to put things out there’. These ‘books about life’ are themselves ‘living’, in the sense they are open to ongoing collaborative processes of writing, editing, updating, remixing and commenting by readers. As well as repackaging open access science research -- together with interactive maps and audio-visual material -- into a series of books, Living Books About Life is thus involved in rethinking ‘the book’ itself as a living, collaborative endeavour in the age of open science, open education, open data, and e-book readers such as Kindle and the iPad. Dear list members, I am looking for references on online conversational dynamics, who initiate the talk, who support the talk, who respond the talk, who end the talk, etc. I am trying to see how various factors such as gender, age, language proficiency, subject knowledge and culture, all contribute to relative power structures in the conversations, especially in 3D virtual world. I tried to find some references concerning conversational or discourse analysis , but have not got much. ** Apologies for cross-posting** Call for Papers 'Policy and Internet' Special Issue on "Online Collective Action and Policy Change" Guest Editors Andrea Calderaro (PhD, European University Institute) Anastasia Kavada (PhD, University of Westminster) Policy and Internet, the first major peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary journal investigating the impact of the internet on public policy, is inviting submissions for a special issue on 'Online Collective Action and Policy Change', to be published in January 2013 (paper deadline: 31 March 2012). The journal is edited by the Oxford Internet Institute (University of Oxford) for the Policy Studies Organization (PSO). Please find more information at: http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/news/?id=595 The Internet has created a new interface between collective action and policy making: it opens new channels for social coordination and mobilisation, and it offers multiple platforms from where to influence public opinion and policy makers. The recent wave of protests that has swept authoritarian regimes like Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, but also western liberal democracies like Greece, Spain, and the UK, offers new empirical evidence of the impact that online interactions and information exchange can have on policy making. In addition to these recent instances of contentious politics, advocacy and grassroots groups are increasingly using online technologies to empower local communities and direct change in the policies that most affect them. And issues at the heart of online governance, like Internet regulation, are motivating many collective efforts directed to shaping file-sharing policies, free software, or digital communication rights. This special issue calls for academic papers reporting novel empirical research on how online collective action drives policy change, in any of its ramifications. This includes topics such as: - The coordination of protests and mobilisations using online technologies, and their impact on public opinion and policy making. - The mechanisms through which online collective action grows and diffuses, and how or when they trigger a policy reaction. - The impact of online activity on issue salience, and the responsiveness of policy makers. - The interplay between online collective action and the offline policy cycle, or how policy makers deal with new sources of instability and disruption. This list of topics is not exhaustive, and other questions related to online collective action and its impact on policy making will be considered. I apologize that the message i sent below was not more transparent. I expected most people here to have some knowledge of the early history of arpanet and other associated developments. But email/message systems were started very early in the late 60's and by 1978 they were all over the place with companies and universities using them. To put out a newspaper article that someone in 1978 had sort of invented the field was a bit much for many old timers. Since that message lots of comments have appeared on the Washington post article and the paper has made corrections and realized that a copyright of a single program is not a trademark for the term. It was as pad as claims by some politicians that they are responsible for the INTERNET. In 1971 i approached Larry Roberts and asked him to release some data and specifications on the use of messaging on the arrpanet so i could compare it to what i was doing at OEP with EMISARI. This had a complete message subsystem. i was told by an anonymous party that they did not want to admit that messaging was teh most popular and used application on the ARPANET for fear congress would cut off some of their funding for using such an expensive research system for replacing 10 cent letters rather than the types of applications they had sold the arpanet on!! ** Call for papers ** ** Internet, Politics, Policy 2012: Big Data, Big Challenges? ** ** 20-21 September 2012, University of Oxford ** ** http://microsites.oii.ox.ac.uk/ipp2012 ** ** Rationale ** Recent years have seen an increasing buzz around how 'Big Data' can uncover patterns of human behaviour and help predict social trends. Most social activities today leave digital imprints that can be collected and stored in the form of large datasets of transactional data. These data are already being used to prevent epidemics or combat fraud and crime, but the research potential of these data is still underexploited. The impact of Big Data goes beyond academic research: the behavioural insights gained from transactional information can also be used to drive evidence-based policy making and 'nudge' political behaviour. However, the technical skills necessary to analyse large datasets often prevent social scientists from exploiting its potential. Much detail is also lost in the analysis of Big Data, which emphasises aggregated patterns over mechanisms operating at the individual level and lacks the demographic information of survey data, for example. This conference calls for papers that explore the new research frontiers opened up by Big Data as well as its limitations. We are looking for research that uses large datasets to inform old debates in political science, and papers that develop innovative methodological tools (from experiments, to crowd-sourcing, to online ethnography) to overcome the omissions of big datasets. The Internet, Politics, Policy 2012 conference aims to serve as a forum to encourage discussion across disciplinary boundaries on how to exploit Big Data to inform policy debates and advance social science research. ** Programme ** The conference aims to attract papers from a range of disciplines analysing Big Data or developing approaches that dig into the mechanisms that large datasets do not consider. Panels will be organised in twin tracks: - Papers in the Politics track will explore the insights that large datasets and complementary methodological tools offer in the analysis of political behaviour, including - but not limited to - mobilisations, collective action, or public opinion formation; - Papers in the Policy track will look at how behavioural insights gained from Big Data analysis, and from experiments in online settings, can inform policy debates and shape policy making, including e-health, on-line education, cybercrime, security and privacy.
