Colleagues-- I am working on a survey of engineering professionals and would like your input (from an international perspective) on my demographic question about level of education. One of the primary goals of the survey is to collect international data, so I do not want to preference U.S. degrees, but I cannot list all possible degrees. I would appreciate your opinion on the following with that in mind. What is your highest degree completed? Associate's degree Bachelor's degree Master's degree Multiple master's degrees Ph.D. Multiple Ph.D.s Other ________ In which country did you earn this/these degree(s)? Thank you for your feedback. The conference explores academically the emerging and frontier-breaking applications of new media in everyday contexts of leisure, business and organizational life. October 3rd is the main Academic MindTrek day. Due increasing popularity of the conference, we are extending the scope of Academic MindTrek 2012! The academic conference features six major themes: * Social Media * Ambient & Ubiquitous Media * Business & Media * Human-Computer Interaction (new track!) * Open Source * Digital Games SOCIAL MEDIA ?Get social!? Social media and Web 2.0 technologies are applied in ever diverse practices both in private and public communities. Totally new business models are emerging, traditional communication and expression modalities are challenged, and new practices are constructed in the collaborative, interactive media space. AMBIENT AND UBIQUITOUS MEDIA ?The medium is the message!? ? This conference track focuses on the definition of ambient and ubiquitous media with a cross-disciplinary viewpoint: ambient media between technology, art, and content. The focus of this track is on applications, location based services, ubiquitous computation, augmented reality, theory, art-works, mixed reality concepts, the Web 3.0, and user experiences that make ubiquitous and ambient media tick. MEDIA BUSINESS, MEDIA PRODUCTION AND MEDIA MANAGEMENT Media business and media management face the challenges of the emergence of new forms of digital media. This theme focuses on business studies, policies, practices, and organizational structure of media firms. It discusses competition, patterns of media usage, advertising models, and how traditional media can cope with the challenges coming from digital media focusing on media business and media management issues. HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION (HCI) The wide field of HCI is to discuss issues around human computer interaction modalities, consumer experience, design of computer systems, human aspects, universal media access, ergonomics, communication, novel interaction modalities, privacy, trusted systems, interaction theories, and sociological and psychological factors. This theme of devotes to several of these aspects, and is targeted to the scientific community dealing with several applied and theoretical aspects of HCI and user experience. OPEN SOURCE The last decade has seen a significant increase in open source initiatives such as open source software, open standards, open content, open media, or even open source hardware. On the one hand, the open movement has created new kinds of opportunities such as new business models and development approaches. On the other hand, it has introduced new kinds of technical and non-technical challenges. DIGITAL GAMES The culture and business of digital games is becoming increasingly varied. The current trends range from novel interface innovations and digital distribution channels to social game dynamics and player-generated content. The games track is open for theoretical works, empirical case studies and constructive projects. DEMONSTRATIONS The aim is to gather demonstrations from researchers and professionals from the communities related to the topics of MindTrek. The objective for the demonstrations is to provide a forum for exchanging experiences, practical projects, or media demonstrators. The target audience includes members of the academic community, industry, or laboratories who can demonstrate the results of their research projects with a practical implementation. ACADEMIC MINDTREK AS A CONFERENCE In addition, special academic sessions (e.g. tutorials, demonstrations, workshops, and multidisciplinary sessions) will be held parallel to the MindTrek business conference. Academic speakers and authors are warmly welcome to register for the business conference tracks as part of the academic conference with our special registration rate. The Academic MindTrek registration includes full service such as coffees, lunches, and social gatherings. The MindTrek Association hosts MindTrek as a yearly conference, where the Academic MindTrek conference has been a part of this unique set of events comprising competitions, world famous keynote speakers, plenary sessions, media festivals, and workshops since 1997. It is a meeting place where experts and thinkers present results from their latest work regarding the development of Internet, interactive media, and the information society. MindTrek brings together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines that are involved in the development of media in various fields, ranging from sociology and the economy, to technology. The organizing committee invites you to submit original high quality full papers, long or short, addressing the special theme and the topics, for presentation at the conference and inclusion in the proceedings. CONFERENCE PUBLICATIONS The scientific part of the conference is organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMM, and ACM SIGCHI. CFP: HICSS-46 Technologically Mediated Relationship/Online Dating Minitrack
by Christopher Mascaro 03 Apr '12

03 Apr '12

*TRACK: INTERNET AND THE DIGITAL ECONOMY* * Minitrack: Technologically Mediated Relationship Creation and Maintenance * Online dating sites are a unique laboratory for understanding human relationship initiation, development and self-identified success. Presently, online dating research is scattered across numerous disciplines. An integrated, interdisciplinary discourse of how technology mediates the initiation and maintenance of relationships is necessary to advance the research and development of information and communication technologies to support online relationship formation. For example, the work of the organizers suggests that there are different views of what a successful online dating relationship looks like, depending on the socio-technical context. What will the next generation of online dating do to accommodate these differences? To what extent will online dating emerge as a significant component of social media more generally? How do the needs of online daters change through life? We invite papers that address Technology-Mediated Relationship Creation and Maintenance, which can include online dating or a number of other topics such as the following: 1. User motivation for undertaking online dating 2. Profile Development and Maintenance 3. Information seeking behavior within the websites 4. Communication activity within and external to the website 5. Access mechanisms for online dating sites 6. Social media utilization for similar purposes or to verify information about potential dates 7. Motivation for terminating the usage of a site (both successful and unsuccessful) 8. Outside of sites explicitly designed for dating, where and how do people create relationships online? 9. Non-romantic measures of online relationship creation success We invite you to check out http://www.onlinedatinginformatics.com for a full CFP and email cmascaro(a)gmail.com with any questions

CFP reminder - Media, Technology & Society Conference 2012 - Infosocial. Deadline April. 15.
by Ryan Whalen 02 Apr '12

02 Apr '12

My apologies for cross posting. I'm writing to remind list members (and their colleagues and students) of the upcoming Media, Technology and Society program's graduate student conference titled "Infosocial: Where information and the social sciences collide." The extended abstract submission deadline is April 15th. Call details are at the conference website (http://bit.ly/InfoSocialCFP) and follow in the text below. Please feel free to distribute widely and pass the word along to graduate students and programs. *Call for Papers* *InfoSocial: Where information and the social sciences collide.* A graduate student conference hosted by the Media, Technology, and Society (MTS) program at Northwestern University As the information infrastructure of contemporary social life becomes increasingly complex and visible, disparate modes of inquiry converge. We are surrounded by a proliferation of data that provides a unique window into a wide array of individual and collective behavior. The changes in the visibility and availability of such data have challenged the technical and conceptual boundaries of the social sciences. This, in turn, has triggered a growth in interdisciplinary collaboration, and in methodological and theoretical innovation. Our conference aims to contribute to these collaborative and innovative developments by bringing together graduate student scholarship from across the academic spectrum. We seek papers authored by graduate students that address relevant topics within and across disciplines, including contributions from communication and media studies, sociology, psychology, computer science, science and technology studies, information science, political science, and anthropology, among others. Possible submission topics include (but are not limited to): • Linked data/semantic web and society • Privacy and information management • Measuring online behavior • Collective action and crowd sourcing • Internet skill and literacy • Open source and innovation • Complexity and technological change • History and information • Information at work • Educational technology • Networks and the information society • Methodological developments *Important Information:* Extended abstract submission deadline: April 15, 2012 Acceptance notification date: May 15, 2012 Conference Dates: October 12-13, 2012 Location: Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois Conference URL: http://bit.ly/InfoSocialCFP Email: mtsconference(a)u.northwestern.edu To submit, please visit http://bit.ly/NUMTSconference and upload an extended abstract of no more than 500 words. Note: There will be no fee to attend and/or participate in the conference. Meals will be provided and interested attendees may request to be housed with Northwestern students. While we can make no guarantees, we will do our best to accommodate requests. what do social media users think of social media monitoring?
by Helen Kennedy 30 Mar '12

30 Mar '12

Hello list I sent a message to the list last year (entitled 'research with social media users about social media monitoring?') asking is anyone knew of any research with social media users about how they feel about what is done with their social media data through social media monitoring. I received a couple of expressions of interest and just one reference (thanks for these responses!): Crosstab. (2010). Online Reputation in a Connected World. http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9709510 Since then, with doctoral candidate Cristina Miguel and a media monitoring company, I have put together a small project exploring this question. I include a brief description of it below. So this message is to ask for people to send me any references that they think we should be aware of, not just about what social media users think of social media monitoring, but anything that addresses the issues that we're interested in. Please reply off-list to h.kennedy(a)leeds.ac.uk and as before, we'll attempt to compile a bibliography. Thanks! Helen and Cristina Dr Helen Kennedy Senior Lecturer in New Media & BA Hons New Media Programme Leader Institute of Communications Studies, University of Leeds URL: http://ics.leeds.ac.uk/staff/h.kennedy OUT NOW: Net Work: Ethics and Values in Web Design --- PROJECT SUMMARY: WHAT DO SOCIAL MEDIA USERS THINK ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA MONITORING? This project aims to explore what social media users think about social media monitoring, with particular reference to the monitoring of their own social media activity. Social media monitoring involves the application of a range of technologies to determine sentiments and opinions expressed within social media platforms about particular topics, in order to arrive at a measure of general sentiments and opinions. In recent years, the number of companies carrying out such activities has risen exponentially around the globe. In response, some cultural critics have raised concerns about the consequences of such activities, which might be seen as: a form of surveillance and affective control (Andrejevic 2011); the monetisation of friendship, feeling and intimacy (Hearn 2010); or a violation of the privacy of social media users (boyd 2010; Nissenbaum 2009). But little research has been done with social media users to explore how they feel about the possibility that the feelings and opinions they express in social media might be monitored, analysed and exploited for commercial gain. The research will take the form of three or four focus groups of approximately 8 participants, each of which constitutes a category of social media users. At each focus group, demographic information will be gathered about participants, alongside information about participants' social media use. Participants will be presented with a range of social media monitoring activities undertaken by media monitoring companies, and asked to express their views about these activities. The discussion with participants will seek to explore how they perceive their social media use, their attitudes towards privacy and intimacy in social media, and how they think about their privacy and intimacy in social media spaces.
