More on Ethics...
by Elizabeth A Buchanan 26 Jan '09

26 Jan '09

Dear Colleagues, The Ethics Working Group is beginning a revision of the 2002 Ethical Decision Making document. While the committee will be overseeing this work, the project is of course a very open process to all in our aoir community. To this end, please send me (directly) any comments you have on the existing document, if it has been useful to you, in what ways, what sorts of issues you would like to see reflected in the revision, any case studies you would like to share about your experiences with ethics boards and online research, and so on. For your reference, the 2002 doc is at http://aoir.org/?page_id=8 I look forward to hearing from you. Best, e. Elizabeth A. OK--I guess I can now ethically promote my own book (actually two), since the question was asked on the list ;-).... Check out: Digital Dilemmas: Ethical Issues for Online Media Professionals (Blackwell, 2003)--focuses on journalistic ethical issues when working online... Also: The Art of Strategic Listening: Finding Business Intelligence Via Blogs and Social Media--(Paramount, 2008) has a full chapter on ethical issues when doing qualitative research on the Web. Hope these are helpful, and would be happy to respond to any questions on this matter directly. New News-Online@ e-mail list, carrying on the tradition of "online-news"
by Steven Clift 26 Jan '09

26 Jan '09

For those researching the online news industry ... Steve After sensing a major hole in exchange among online news professionals during these dramatic times, I sent an e-mail to everyone who posted in its last year on the trusty "online-news" e-mail list (the one started by Steve Outing years ago). I asked if they would like to see a similar e-list come back. They did. So the description is simple: News Online is an e-mail list for professionals in online news around the world. It carries on in the spirit of former "online-news" e-mail list now with additional web/digest options. Sign-up here: http://dowire.org/news-online-join For more information: http://dowire.org/news-online Like the old "online-news" list, the web view will be behind a password for members-only when we open. We need at least 150 members before we will open for a round of introductions. Steven Clift http://stevenclift.com http://www.pbs.org/idealab/steven_clift/ P.S. What happened to the old list? I do know that Poynter launched a new web-based Groups system (http://groups.poynter.org) and the Wired Journalists Ning site (http://wiredjournalists.com) seems to have some good momentum, but none of these are simple e-mail lists that let you easily post in your idle time from your Blackberry or wireless e-mail. So, if you miss the good old "online-news" list, join us.

Horizon Report 2009 Profiles Six Key Emerging Technologies for Higher Education
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 25 Jan '09

25 Jan '09

Colleagues/ Each year, the Horizon Report describes six areas of emerging technology that will have significant impact on higher education within three adoption horizons over the next one to five years. "Campus leaders and practitioners alike use the report as a springboard for discussion around emerging technology," noted Larry Johnson, chief executive officer of the NMC. "Over the six years that the report has been published, the impact on technology planning and discussions on campuses has been substantial. Now with six years of data to consider, we continue to look back at the overarching trends over time. What we see is that there are several long-term, conceptual themes that have affected, and continue to affect, the practice of teaching and learning in profound ways." More than 75,000 copies of the 2008 Horizon Report were distributed in print and electronically last year. According to EDUCAUSE President Diana Oblinger, "Learning, discovery, and creative expression are fundamental to higher education. Technology can help in each of those areas. But our community wants to know which emerging technologies are best for what uses. And, what examples demonstrate their potential? The Horizon Report addresses those critical questions." In defining the six selected areas for 2009 - mobile devices, cloud computing, geo-everything, the personal web, semantic-aware applications, and smart objects - the project tapped into an ongoing discussion among knowledgeable individuals in business, industry, and education, as well as published resources, current research and practice, and the expertise of the NMC and ELI communities. The Horizon Project's Advisory Board probes current trends and challenges in higher education, explores possible topics for the report, and ultimately selects the technologies to be profiled. Table of Contents Executive Summary ■ Technologies to Watch ■ Key Trends ■ Critical Challenges ■ The Horizon Project Time-to-Adoption: One Year or Less Mobiles Cloud Computing Time-to-Adoption: Two to Three Years Geo-Everything The Personal Web Time-to-Adoption: Four to Five Years Semantic-Aware Applications Smart Objects Each technology profile includes: ■ Overview ■ Relevance for Teaching, Learning, Research, or Creative Expression ■ Examples ■ For Further Reading Links to the Full Text As Well As An Associated Videocast And Previous Editions Are Available At [ http://tinyurl.com/cc949a ] Enjoy! /Gerry Gerry McKiernan Associate Professor Science and Technology Librarian Iowa State University Library Ames IA 50011 gerrymck(a)iastate.edu There is Nothing More Powerful Than An Idea Whose Time Has Come / Victor Hugo [ http://www.blogger.com/profile/09093368136660604490 ] Iowa: Where the Tall Corn Flows and the (North)West Wind Blows [ http://alternativeenergyblogs.blogspot.com/ ]

Defining terms: "Democracy 2.0"
by Julia Pellicciaro 23 Jan '09

23 Jan '09

Happy Friday AIR-Lers! I have a two-pronged question to pose to you all. But first, a bit of context: I am on a advisory committee for Philly NetSquared, which organizes monthly meetings (Net Tuesdays) on using technology to advance social change (another topic for another day). The idea being thrown around for the February Net Tuesday is "Democracy 2.0," which when assimilated with "Web 2.0," is a very timely topic. However, upon a quick Google search of the term, I emailed the rest of the committee with the following information, which *I will now use to frame my questions to all of you: * *1.* The first two Google search results (http://moourl.com/r3jcz) are from Mobilize.org, which conducted a survey of Millennials way back in 2002, and their thrust at the time focused strictly on Millennials identifying specific needs for change (http://moourl.com/l5vqp) The third result is Digg citing a broken link from wiki-law.org (http://moourl.com/z9kow) Democracy 2.0 is an experiment that hypothesizes that a wide range of > individuals can contribute to the creation of our nation's laws through a > wiki on the web. Democracy 2.0 hopes to answer the following question: if > the country started from scratch today, without any laws, what laws would > you make for society? This is not what has been intended by the term in the NetSquared discussion. And perhaps there is a reason why this entry has been removed from Wiki-Law... *2.* There is no entry in Wikipedia for "Democracy 2.0" ( http://moourl.com/0y09k) While Wikipedia is, of course, by no means* *the final authority on either historical or cutting edge concepts (or anything in between), it is generally a good gauge of which concepts the Internet public (namely Wikipedia contributors) has formed even a somewhat stabilized and homogenized perspective on. While I completely understand the intended conceptual thread drawn from Web 2.0 to "Democracy 2.0," I'm a beat leary of NetSquared coining a term that doesn't quite seem to have a single-minded use as of yet. Not to mention that "Web 2.0" has lost some impetus as it's increasingly become cliché. I've also searched "Democracry 2.0" on BoingBoing, ReadWriteWeb, and Technorati. While the term is actively used as a tag on Technorati (as well as a related tags,"Government 2.0" and "Open Source Democracy"), the other two sites yielded null search results. There are also no entries yet on UrbanDictionary.com. *So my two-prong question for you is as follows:* 1. What are your thoughts (as tech savvy researchers) on the term "Democracy 2.0" and similar terms "Government 2.0" and "Open Source Democracy" (and are there any other synonyms in use)? 2. How do we as internet researchers determine the validity of such terms in our temperamental social-networked information age? In what cases should we define terms and in what cases do we allow the Internet public to define terms? I'm really eager to hear your input. All the best, Julia Julia Pellicciaro // Passion:Purpose:Integrity // tweet :: twitter.com/juropel blog :: telluricaesthetic.net ... CFP: Learning Infrastructures in the Social Sciences and Humanities
by jeremy hunsinger 23 Jan '09

23 Jan '09

apologies for x-posting, distribute as appropriate -jh CFP: Learning Infrastructures in the Social Sciences and Humanities Special issue of the journal Learning Inquiry (http://www.springerlink.com/content/120592/ ) Edited by Jeremy Hunsinger Papers Due: May 15th 2009 Please contact the editor to discuss topics at jhuns.((a))vt.edu (remove brackets) In the last 20 years, the learning infrastructures of the social sciences and humanities have transformed dramatically toward a more plural set of practices, methods, systems, and tools. In this issue, we are looking for contributions from social informatics, humanistic informatics, cultural informatics, digital humanities, internet studies, design research, media studies, and related fields dealing with the learning infrastructures. I am seeking papers that deal empirically, analytically and/or critically with the learning infrastructures in the social sciences and humanities. Cyberinfrastructures, physical infrastructures and organizational infrastructures have been transformed through the politics, economics, and technologies surrounding our learning infrastructures. Learning infrastructures are part of professors and students scholarly experiences everyday. These infrastructures are part of how students begin their engagement with the social sciences and humanities and perhaps become part of how they maintain that engagement throughout their lives. Beyond our professors, departments, centers and institutes, our learning infrastructures are mediating our disciplinarity and interdisciplinarities to our students. In short, learning infrastructures are a part of how students learn to be scholars in various disciplines and citizens in the world-at-large. Part of the debate surrounding learning infrastructures in the social sciences and humanities is the over/under-definition and over/ underdetermination of terms such as learning and infrastructure in disciplinary and interdisciplinary discourses. In this CFP, I want to encourage papers that help to define and critically engages those terms. Possible topics: • Transformation of institutions in relation to learning infrastructures • New methods, new understandings in the social sciences and humanities related to learning infrastructures • New disciplines, interdisciplines and transdisciplines and learning infrastructures • Political economics of learning infrastructures • Ethics, norms, and politics surrounding learning infrastructures • Openness and/or closedness in learning infrastructures • Social/Cultural/Informatics informatics and learning infrastructures • New directions for learning infrastructures based on social sciences and humanities • Cultural environmentalism and learning infrastructures • Knowledge/Design ecologies and learning infrastructures Review process will be double blind peer review following editorial selection. We expect to place fewer than 8 papers in this special issue. We would prefer papers between 4000-16000 words. Papers should be submitted tohttp://www.editorialmanager.com/linq/ Please contact the editor to discuss your paper and/or when you submit your paper.

Int'l Comm Assoc Award
by Barry Wellman 23 Jan '09

23 Jan '09

The ICA has an interesting award. Not to brag too much, I won it last year, and one of you might this year. But move quickly with your nominations: Jan 31, 09 deadline. Note that the nominators must be ICA members, but the winner doesn't have to be. As the notice says below, the award is for researchers outside of the field of communication. Sociologists, historians, etc. in sociology, history, etc. departments are eligible. And sociologists, historians etc. who happen to be in a communication dept can be nominated, as long as they function as sociologists, historians, etc. I'm a committee member this year. I can answer general Qs to some extent, (the kind of answers I could post to this list) but not specific ones and Do note that it is about Communication RESEARCH -- I can think of some wonderful non-researchers, but they wouldn't make it thru. And please don't ask me to define Research now: that may make for lively committee discussion. There are no more criteria now than what is in this posting. There may be much talmudic committee discussion. The committee obviously chose last year's winner (me) on the basis of good looks. Here's the official announcement from the ICA website: COMMUNICATION RESEARCH AS AN OPEN FIELD The CROF prize of $500 is awarded to researchers who have made important contributions to the field of communications from outside the discipline of communications. It rewards and supports dialogue with other fields and institutional locations in which vital new understandings of the communications environment and the public sphere are being produced. Nomination Procedures Nominations should contain: 1. Letter(s) of nomination, not to exceed two pages apiece, speaking directly to each of the award criteria from the description 2. Publication(s) relevant to the award, If the publication is a book, arrangements should be made with the publisher to ship 5 copies to Michael Haley at ICA, 1500 21st Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036, USA), 3. CV(s) of the nominee(s) 4. All nomination materials should be submitted electronically by January 31 of each year, 11:00 pm EST at www.icahdq.org/cfp.
